DON'T MANIFEST AKUTAGAWA'S FEELINGS BEING UNREQUITED WAGEHGAHTJSHHAJ
But does it count as manifesting if I'm just stating facts 🤔😔😔
#sskk#people asks me stuff#Jk. Or maybe not.#Idk I used to have a HUGE sskk-is-unrequited-love phase around June–#and in a way I still think as far as the manga events go Atsushi didn't feel anything but loathing for Akutagawa up to at least chapter 87#(While Akutagawa stopped hating Atsushi on the Moby Dick fight. C'mon guys. I've seen some.........#Questionable takes over who fell first in sskk recently. Do you really believe that Atsushi said to Akutagawa's face the words#“I think Dazai-san has recognized of you a long time ago” and Akutagawa didn't fall for him right there right now.)#But like... Okay I don't want to make this too big because there's so much to unwrap here and it wouldn't fit in the tags but#For how I see it. it's totally believable to read the manga thinking Akutagawa is in love with Atsushi. like seriously it's just there.#“As long as I can't deny your very being I'll never be able to move forward” “You know the reason yourself don't you”#“Is his life that precious to you” “From the beginning the hole was only for his ally to flee through”#I'm not making this stuff up I'm literally just reading the text#While Atsushi is just there being objectively the WORSE he's ever been with everyone @Akutagawa which is undeniably hilarious on one hand–#and tragically sad on the other. He really DOES NOT care about Akutagawa? He barely ever showed compassion towards him#Which tbh!! It's a lot and it... Doesn't particularly bother me‚ because even if negatively it does show Akutagawa is someone who's–#special for Atsushi#he's like no one else for him#and that's so juicy!!!#It's delicious to explore this hidden aspect of Atsushi's character through the effect Akutagawa has on him#And even though I believe Atsushi didn't love Akutagawa for the most time... There's still plenty of room for things to change.#We still have to see how he'll react to meeting him again. It's possible that Akutagawa's last deed might have changed the judgement–#Atsushi has on him‚ and I can't wait to find out! If anything‚ Akutagawa appeared in Atsushi's mind which is... Something

Lingthusiasm Episode 87: If I were an irrealis episode
Language lets us talk about things that aren't, strictly speaking, entirely real. Sometimes that's an imaginative object (is a toy sword a real sword? how about Excalibur?). Other times, it's a hypothetical situation (such as "if it rains, we'll cancel the picnic" - but neither the picnic nor the rain have happened yet. And they might never happen. But also they might!). Languages have lots of different ways of talking about different kinds of speculative events, and together they're called the irrealis.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about some of our favourite examples under the irrealis umbrella. We talk about various things that we can mean by "reality", such as how existing fictional concepts, like goblins playing Macbeth, differ from newly-constructed fictions, like our new creature the Frenumblinger. We also talk about hypothetical statements using "if" (including the delightfully-named "biscuit conditionals), and using the "if I were a rich man" (Fiddler on the Roof) to "if I was a rich girl" (Gwen Stefani) continuum to track the evolution of the English subjunctive. Finally, a few of our favourite additional types of irrealis categories: the hortative, used to urge or exhort (let's go!), the optative, to express wishes and hopes (if only...), the dubitative, for when you doubt something, and the desiderative (I wish...).

Announcements:
Thank you to everyone who shared Lingthusiasm with a friend or on social media for our seventh anniversary! It was great to see what you love about Lingthusiasm and which episodes you chose to share. We hope you enjoyed the warm fuzzies!
In this month’s bonus episode, Gretchen gets enthusiastic about swearing (including rude gestures) in fiction with science fiction and fantasy authors Jo Walton and Ada Palmer, authors of the Thessaly books and Terra Ignota series, both super interesting series we've ling-nerded out about before on the show. We talk about invented swear words like "frak" and "frell", sweary lexical gaps (why don't we swear with "toe jam!"), and interpreting the nuances of regional swear words like "bloody" in fiction.
Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 80+ other bonus episodes! You’ll also get access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds.

Absolutely random 5 am thoughts once again.
Something always bothered me about Donnie's insecurity in his place on the team is that it wasn't necessarily just him thinking his family only valued him for his tech.
It's that, like many other Donnies, he thought of himself as weak without it.
Now the difference between Rise and a lotta other versions is he actually does rely on his tech in battle. Not as a 'save the day device' or as a distraction for the enemy, but to actually keep his spine intact while snapping others on the field.
Thing is though, from what I can tell he's always been their most well rounded fighter.
I mention in this post that I think objectively that Donnie is second strongest in terms of mystic and physical ability. I think this is really only true for Rise as '12 Dee is regularly protected in battle and is cannon weakest and '03 Donnie can hold his own, but regularly let's his own ego and brains get in the way (classic Donnie overthink). Never watched 87 but one day!
But getting back to it, let's look at literally episode one where all his brothers are freaking out trying to control their new weapons and he's the only one who manages to intentionally put Draxum on the defensive. Even if the hit we've seen him aim at the SKULL didn't land because of Mikey and magic shenaniganery.
(desperately trying to not dive into how Leon Don and Raph prolly had higher prey drive they had to work to keep under control when excited/angry (similar to dogs n whatnot) cause kill shots are preprogrammed into their turtle genetics naturally since turtles don't raise their young)
While in his earlier fight he lost his weapon and ended up getting taken down, it was mostly due to ego! It was his first real fight and he was excited to show off his cool tech that he'd probably barely ever tested. Was the right time to do that in a battle with massive worg riding yokai hitmen? Prolly not but hey the theater kid's gotta get a chance to shine~
Regardless, the only weakness he has without his tech is a prominent exposed spine which his speed and siblings could easily cover for with practice. I guess it bothers me to see someone that's INCREDIBLY capable doubt their abilities. It gives me like,,, assurance aggression XD

i would never want to imply that 87 doesn't have issues writing women, cuz it really does (there's diet jokes, there's misogynistic dialogue, and one uncomfortable ...harem...thing...) but what surprises me most is how actually nicely the women can be written into stories when they show up? like case in point: mona lisa.
first of all, when i looked her up before watching this episode for the first time i had seen one picture and was so nervous to get to this episode like "god a girl turtle so she has hair and a pink scarf, and raphael has to comfort her? great its gonna be cringe" but it turned out i was super wrong. its a one off episode for her, but she captures your attention because raphael has fallen into her story (the same way the turtles as a whole in this series fell into april's story)
she uses raphael as a way to get into a party via hanging off his arm and pretending they're a couple, and then leaves him. the camera doesn't ogle on her, they don't make him infatuated with her, they just have him clearly confused by why a girl took his arm kissed his cheek and then left. and then he sees her acting suspicious so he follows her, sees her hijacking the ship and assumes she's up to no good, cuz this is a turtles episode damn it, shes probably the bad guy!
she doesn't take his shit and tries to tell him to leave cuz he doesn't know what hes getting into and thinks he'll get hurt (she doesn't realize he is a real ninja turtle) before the villain shows up. we get her back story, where we learn she's a physics student who was kidnapped by the villain and forced to work for him, to which she plays along with because she's clever, and she found a way to stop him from the inside. this gets her mutated in the process. raphael realizes hes messed up and assumed this was his story to figure out but it wasn't, he's interrupted her story. raph realizes hes made a mistake and has to help her fix it.
at no point do they actually write this as a romance (despite it being possible to read some dialogue as flirtation, it isn't overt) they're writing mona lisa as someone who isn't taking raphael's sass and is dishing it right back at him and us the audience. the fact its called "raphael meets his match" is so fitting because she's just as much of a character as he is, and the reason it became a ship is on the merit of the way she is written to be a character with her own story and her own personality first, and then as a companion to raphael second
and its kind of sad when i think about 12 mona lisa because, yeah shes this huge alien warrior who fights well, shes not a pretty character, but we don't get to know much about her before her new role in this story is to be the object of raphael's affection. in the end i think its a matter of the (male) writers thinking "well the original mona lisa is too cute and wears pink and she gets helped by the turtles so if we make her a COOL ALIEN WHO FIGHTS GOOD that will make her a stronger character" which is not how that works!
unlike 87, she gets multiple episodes where she shows up, but each time her role is the same. she's raph's girlfriend first and foremost. there's moments of inner turmoil in her, but it always comes down to her fighting for her people vs staying true to raphael. and since this show is about the turtles it puts her place in the story as being about him.
so to me, given the choice between a mona who's story raphael falls into, vs one where she's forced into his, give me the cute pink one any day. that's the stronger character between the two.

Daniel Watches She-Ra
& The Princesses Of Power
-S1E3- 'Razz'
Todays' She-Ra Watchthrough Art: Look I have been having a real shit week or so let me just bullshit this one thanks
Tumblr media
Dumb question but why is Glimmers mom British? Also this is probably just me but it looks like her wings are attached to her hair & I can't stop thinking about it.
Tumblr media
Oh also yo the theme song?
Yeah that's pretty swell.
A big step up from the original cartoon which was just.....sad? It's just like a sad attempt of being a cool retro cartoon theme song. It fails to live up to any of the greats of decades past.
TMNT 87? Iconic. Badass. Groovy. Radical.
Transformers? Iconic as well. Absolutely fucks.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show? Fucking ART that makes Hans Zimmer look like an absolute fucking dork.
Sonic Underground? LITERALLY THE GREATEST FUCKING PIECE OF MUSIC EVER COMPOSED BY MANKIND.
80s She-Ra? It's like watching a cat spray diarrhea across my carpet for a solid minute. It's just sad.
Okay so I literally don't know any of their names but uh-
These two. These two evil goons right here.
Are-
Tumblr media
Okay so are they like gay? I don't know why but my brain saw this & went "Is this dude dating that lizard? are they going to smooch?"
I have no evidence or any proof to back up my claim here.
But I'm gonna just assume these two are gay & smooching & holding hands & stuff.
Anyways these goon squad characters are lame, also fuck that one girl who was bullying Cat-Ra, like, damn. The fuck is her problem?
Like leave that cat alone she's a fucking cat. Who bullies a cat??
Fuck you!!
Yeah so the only two goons I find myself enjoying are these two because I just get a strong feeling that they might be gay.
Again, I have no proof or evidence. But I'm gonna just say that they are anyway because I decided that I want to & you can't stop me.
Tumblr media
Also one of them is a lizard dude. Like I said, that objectively makes him cool as fuck because reptiles are rad as hell.
ALSO GLIMMER & ADORA ARE SO GAY??
Tumblr media
LIKE- OKAY FIRST OFF THIS POSE ABOVE THIS SENTENCE? THAT AIN'T A POSE OF A STRAIGHT PERSON. SHE'S AT THE VERY LEAST BI OR LESBIAN OR SOMETHING. BUT NAH THAT POSE IS GIVING ME VERY HEAVY FAG VIBES /POS
GOD THEY'RE GAY THEY'RE GAY THEY ARE GIRLFRIENDS IDC
Tumblr media
I fucking squealed at this they're SO IN LOVE AAAAAA
GOD THEY ARE SO GAY
SHE'S BEING SO GAY JUST TALKING ABOUT ADORA/SHE-RA
GAY?? GAY
REAL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IF THEY DONT KISS & HOLD HANDS BY THE END IM GOING TO PISS ON MY NEIGHBOURS MAILBOX
POV: Glimmer introduces you to her wife (she's magic & can become very tall & glows bc she's just cool like that)
Tumblr media
Also I like, find She-Ra so fucking funny from the design itself?
She's just.....tall. She's a tall lass. Big. Large. Massive. A Tree.
Like, the fact that she's just....big. Like this is a needed change for her transformation. Being taller is an essential part of it.
One of her magical powers is just being really tall I guess. Like that's part of the transformation, she gets BIG. So that's just considered a power, because it makes her taller.
Being a tall fuck is considered a magical ability in this universe.
Also why did this episode just turn into Pixars' Brave (2012) for the middle part? I'm not upset I'm just confused bc I didn't expect to be hit with this sudden flashback to 2012 shit. But I like this old lady.
But (good job daniel you used but twice in a row, you're so good at writing you stupid fucking idiot-) I just kept being reminded of Brave while watching. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I haven't watched Brave in like a decade. Like, damn though, this part just reminded me of it a lot & I feel it's worth mentioning.
Tumblr media
I should rewatch Brave sometime.
AHEM-
SHE'S SO FUCKING CUTE I WANT TO CRY SHE'S LITERALLY THE SCRUNKLY SCRIMBLO BLORBO AND ALSO A FAGGOT. I LOVE HER. PROTECT THIS SPARKLY FAGGOT & HER MAGICAL WIFE.
GRAHHHHHHH
Tumblr media
Whore-Dak Update:
Okay Hordak, you get points just because you told Shadow Weaver to go fuck herself. That's incredibly based & awesome of you. To not only tell the wizard bitch to shove her stupid fucking shadow magic fart clouds up her ass. But you also were like "Hey angry lesbian cat, you get a promotion because you're epic" & that's so real.
I respect a villain who doesn't bully cats for no reason.
(other than because you're a huge bitch cough shadow cunt cough)
Tumblr media
You're still nowhere near being Skeletor. But you are definitely a far better villain than the original 80s Hordak was. Keep it up buddy.

The Alternate Universes of Steel Ball Run (literally)
Tumblr media
Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)
Ok firstly I just have to say I love love love the short glimpses of AUs that we see in SBR. I'm obsessed with the ever-so-slight changes, and then the bigger ones, because it really does just feed my curiosity into how the events of canon played out and how things could have turned out differently, if only something had been shifted ever so slightly to the left (and also my obsession with how SBR connects with the OG verse).
We know that in the 'base' universe, the objective of the race is the corpse of Jesus Christ, which has the power to grant stands. But during the battle with Diego, HP, alt!Diego and alt!HP, we learn that in another universe, the objective of the race is instead the collection of diamonds. Yet, HP still has Cream Starter, so stands obviously still exist. Okay, you might say, fine. But wasn't Cream Starter a stand HP was born with (ala Polnareff)? Yes, but as the panel above shows, and as we see during the confrontation in Philidelphia, in other universes Diego still has Scary Monsters and Johnny still has Tusk. What I'm saying is, it's entirely possible Stand Arrows exist in alternate universes of Steel Ball Run! (Or some other method of granting stands, at least).
Furthermore, if D4C transfers from Valentine to Valentine, and D4C was initially the ability of 'base' Valentine (as well as the Stand ability granted to him by the corpse), that implies alternate Valentines have a different stand entirely! (Unless Valentine somehow took off Johnny's leg without a stand, which I find somewhat doubtful.) I believe there is a line where alt!Diego mentions alt!Valentine’s range as if it were an important component of alt!Valentine’s stand, but we know that range is not necessarily the thing to watch out for with base!Valentine’s D4C. I’ll have to dig up the panel later but this is just a little note to come back to. Real quick, I just want to point this out:
Tumblr media
Chapter 87: Ball Breaker (Part 5)
I think Johnny and Valentine parallel is so many interesting ways that I would love to explore later, but for now I just want to point out that both Tusk - Act 3 and Love Train enable their users to hide in a 'dimensional gap', only Act 3 protects Johnny through the ultimate defense while Love Train protects Valentine by hurting everyone else.
Back on track. The Spin, on the other hand, is a universal constant. Even if the corpse parts didn't exist, Johnny would have still followed Gyro after his initial reaction to the Steel Balls and learned Lesson 4 to advance Tusk to Act 2. Notably, in the universe seen above, Slow Dancer is perfectly fine. She was crucial in the 'base' universe to unlocking Tusk Act 4, hence why Valentine targeted her first. Though without Love Train (unlocked through the corpse), Act 4 isn't critical to Johnny's success. Take that as you will. At the very least, we can rest assured knowing the Johnny in the universe above wasn't on the cusp of walking again only to have Valentine chop his leg off.
What's more is that the corpse doesn't exist in any universe but the 'base' world (Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)). That only makes me curious as to what could have possibly brought Johnny to this point, given his legs and spine would have never had the chance to actually heal through the power of the corpse. Maybe he just wanted to save Lucy...
On the other hand, imagine being the Johnny and Lucy in every other world only to have your archenemy gain a new stand, try to dip, spontaneously begin to spin, then die instantly. They're the real winners here.
Tumblr media
Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)
Also, since the infinite spin follows D4C and the Valentine it's attached too, is jumpsuit Valentine just fine now? Did he simply move to a new universe with no way back? Things we will never know the answer to.
Anyway, here's a compilation of different Johnnys and Lucys:
Tumblr media
Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)
Tumblr media
Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)
Tumblr media
Chapter 87: Ball Breaker (Part 5)
Tumblr media
Chapter 87: Ball Breaker (Part 5)
Okay, to get this post back on track, let me list some common denominators:
a) A confrontation of some sort between Johnny, Lucy and Valentine
b) Johnny is always somewhat kneeling, implying that in every universe he is disabled
c) It's sunset
Differences:
a) In the latter two universes, it appears Johnny does not have Slow Dancer
b) Lucy has shoes in the last universe
c) Johnny does not have Tusk out in the last three universes (do stands exist in those ones?)
d) Johnny is only injured in the first alternative universe
My theory is that the further Valentine travels between universes, the more the differences pile up. Though, as Valentine states, certain things are constant. His father's death, for example, though that could be due to some constant stroke of fate to set Valentine on the path to being a powerful figure in every universe (though he might have been lying about truly wanting to find his father. Never meet your heroes, right?)
Tumblr media
Chapter 88: Break My Heart, Break Your Heart (Part 1)
Perhaps Johnny's disability also falls in this category. Without these events, they probably would not have found themselves in these circumstances, and would have been different people entirely.
We know from the existence of The World!Diego that there are some universes where someone dies and another survives. Valentine knows that, as he tried to entice Johnny with the promise of an alternate Gyro who survived past his encounter with Valentine, or perhaps avoided the corpse hunt entirely. Personally, I would have loved to see a universe where Johnny died instead and we saw Gyro with Lucy. Just to spice things up a little.
Also, my crack theory is that The World!Diego, extrapolating from his crueler behavior as compared to Scary Monsters!Diego and the stand itself, was from a universe closely adjacent to the OG Jojoverse. Because I'm delusional, and I think the SBR characters somehow existing on the same plane as the OGverse is cool as fuck (and sets up lots of fic premises lol).
What's the bottom line of this post? Basically, for better or worse, every SBR au is valid and I would love to see some of these concepts explored. That's it, really.
Thanks for reading!
