Today’s Exhibit of the Day? The Museum’s giant amethyst geode. Standing 9 ft (2.7 m) tall and weighing around 11,000 lbs (5,000 kg), it’s one of the largest specimens in our halls. How did this dazzling geode come to be? About 135 million years ago, the continental plates carrying South America and Africa began to separate. Magma poured out from fractures in Earth’s crust and large gas bubbles escaped from within the magma—becoming trapped in the rock as it solidified, forming cavities. Groundwater flowing into these spaces brought dissolved silica, which crystallized into quartz. Over millennia, most of these quartz crystals turned into rich purple amethyst. Spot this and other amazing specimens in the Museum’s Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals!

Perspective
My museum for February is the Frick Madison, which only counts as a new museum on a technicality. I’ve seen the collection before – it’s typically housed in the Frick House on 5th, and I’ve seen it there, since it wasn’t terribly far from where I used to work. I hated it. It felt like nothing was labeled and so I had no idea what I was looking at. The house was too big – it’s not that I got…

The Cloisters - Experiencing The Middle Ages in NYC
The Solo Scale: Make sure that you’ve got decent phone coverage and good directions if you’re headed out this way as it is a bit of a hike outside the city where you could get turned around, but wandering through Fort Tryon park to get to the Cloisters is a great solo activity. Did you know that the Met has a second property in New York? That wouldn’t be shocking, but what might be surprising…

“My work is timeless because it’s based on the beauty of the human body and the fascinating world we live in,” said Thierry Mugler.
Never one to shy away from daring endeavors, Mugler staged photoshoots in some of the world’s most breathtaking settings including: icebergs in Greenland, the White Sand of New Mexico, and the Tlalpan Chapel in Mexico City to name a few.
Here, Claude Heidemeyer poses on the edge of the Chrysler Building for an aptly-named photograph, “Vertigo,” in 1988. Mugler’s keen eye as a director resulted in photographs and campaigns that helped to convey his exhilarating point of view.

Did you catch the solar eclipse? This week, eclipse chasers gathered on the Museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace to view the celestial phenomenon. The next time the contiguous United States will see a total solar eclipse is in 2044. Thanks to all who joined us at the Museum! Photos: © AMNH/ A. Keding

Met Gala 2023.
Fashions change, but there is one look that never goes out of style.
Tumblr media
And you bet your a*s it's an itty-bitty-kitty wearing a French Net. But this is not just any kitty-cat: this is Choupette, of the late, great fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld for #met gala 2023.
This year, the great, good, and outrageously sexy gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the one and only, nEwWĕ yörKę citæyyyyy for the event known as "The Super Bowl of Fashion." Here, a sheer mass of the glitziest, most glam celebz sported pearls, starched collars, and black and white to honor the legendary German designer, who passed away in 2019. For this year's theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty", invite-only attendees were asked to wear clothes "in honor of Karl". And honor, they did, with an array of designs, dresses, and costumes to astonish, illuminate, and bedazzle. And dashboard beloveds Pedro Pascal, Lizzo, K.Stew, and Harvey Guillén turned heads and served, quite frankly.
