Boichik Bagels, 3170 College Ave, Berkeley (North Berkeley), CA 94705
Tumblr media
Boichik Bagels are NY water style bagels. The owner missed New York bagels, so she decided to make her own. Boichik bagels start with a cold fermentation process overnight to develop a skin, they’re boiled, and then baked. They’ve received high praise in the New York Times and it’s not unusual to find a long line. The menu is very much classic NY bagel shop inspired.
The Berkeley location is the original and it’s a small one where they make the bagels. You place your order outside (and aren’t allowed inside). They’ll call your name when the order is ready.
Choose from 16 kinds of classic bagels (e.g., salt, pumpernickel, sesame, everything, poppy, bialy, plain, etc.), classic cream cheeses and spreads, fish and salads, veggies that you can add to your bagel, bagel sandwiches, hot coffee, juice, and other beverages. Bagels are $3 each. Every 12th bagel is free.
Sesame bagel with horseradish cheddar scallion cream cheese, cucumbers, red onion: They were generous with the amount of cream cheese but not the amount of cucumber or red onion. The veggies were fresh. The bagel was big and thick. It was soft with a chewy crust  – pretty good! Cream cheese was good though the horseradish flavor was mild and I could not taste scallion.
It’s set up for takeout only. Parking is available in the back.
You can get Boichik Bagels at Berkeley Bowl.
4.5 out of 5 stars

ok that skokie enthusiasts twitter account is my favorite account on twitter from now on forever. i can even accept that ny bagel and bialy lost their food bracket since it did at least make it to the semis and was beaten by pita inn which was probably inevitably going to win regardless
god. look at this though

I visited the Stand Alone Cheese shop in Queens. They have every cheese that I've ever dreamt of and so many that I will now dream of. The people there are kind and very knowledgeable about cheese. They proved to me that I've got a friend in cheeses😉 I should've brought an extra suitcase that I could've filled with cheese to bring home. Next time, I will. Right now, the extra space I have to bring things home is already almost full of pizza, bialys, egg rolls, and Italian cookies. But I still bought some Parmesan reggiano, pecorino romano, and some asiago to take home. I'll find a way to squeeze it in. I couldn't resist. I can't wait to cook with these cheeses!!! Mama mia, this will be delicious 😋 😍 TSA always looks at me kinda funny when they see my bags are packed with food, but I don't mind because it's sooooooo worth it 😁 I love NY ❤️

They're not 'just onion bagels', okay? I am trapped in the food culture desert that is NY's Capital Region, and as someone who grew up with NYC deli food, I miss these so much.

Listen I will tell you the best places for your bagels and fish needs in the places I’ve lived:
NY Bagel & Bialy on Touhy is the best in Chicago. Open and baking 24/7, so you always get fresh. Once Upon is good but only in HP, don’t even bother in Winnetka (winnetka for bagels, I’m dead). They also have one of those drink dispenser cooler things with Crystal Lite in it, which is LITERALLY the most jewish thing I’ve ever seen.
Bagelicious in East Cobb is your best bet in Atlanta. Goldbergs for the nostalgia, bc it used to be up the street from me and my uncle worked there when I was a baby and it’s VERY old school jewish atlanta, but ONLY west paces or roswell road in buckhead, you will see everyone you ever went to hebrew school with, but it’s not so good anymore. I mean, they have a location at the airport. It’s worth the drive to bagelicious in east cobb, and that’s where my mom likes the nova anyway. good whitefish. never had the soup.

When your coworker visits NY and brings you back some treats ❣️🥯
Fun fact: the word Bialy is a shortened version of Bialystoker Kuchen, which in Yiddish means “little bread from Bialystok “
