I was devastated to hear earlier today that Notre Dame Cathedral was in flames. Paris was always my dream and this time last year, it came true. I spent hours inside, in complete awe. And then I stood out in the rain and marveled at the glorious architecture from outside. I’m saddened for the Parisians and for us all who have a lost much of Our Lady of Paris, but she will be rebuilt again. From the Washington Post: “In an address to the nation just before midnight, President Emmanuel Macron said the worst had been avoided, that the exterior structure had been preserved and that the cathedral would rise again. “I tell you solemnly tonight: We will rebuild this cathedral,” he vowed. “Notre Dame of Paris is our history,” Macron continued, emphasizing the structure’s unique place in the national imagination. “The epicenter of our lives. So sad but yet in such awe. I do not subscribe to any religion, but the significance of Notre Dame has never been foreign to me. It is a symbol of many things, all coming together as a monument to not just French and Catholicism self actualization, but human aspiration. It hurts to see this, but still I am so glad to know that people are safe (and I hope for a swift recovery of the one firefighter reported injured), and that Notre Dame still stands. I will say, through the sadness and horror, I couldn't help but feel that, even ablaze, Norte Dame was still unbelievably stunning. She did not burn ugly.
