listen this might be something that seems obvious to me because I actually like the art of film and storytelling and art in general, but maybe… don’t make movies based off of old movies you very obviously hate. Why should I watch your remake if all you do is shittalk the source material you based it off of? How is that supposed to convince me your “new and improved” version is going to be better if you keep telling me the bar is literally rock bottom?

About three quarters of the nct nation movie was actually so much fun i recognized all the songs except the dream songs lmao there were a lot of ppl but not many with light sticks and half of them were in my row and there was even another leekbong !!! I was woo-ing so much during the wayv parts really showing up for my weishens and turned my lightstick off during nct dream parts that was my compromise for not actively booing but they got a big cheer unfortunately. there was a gaggle of dreamzens behind me it was really annoying but i made up for it by talking to my friend at full volume the entire time they were on screen explaining the intricacies of nct politics. The biggest sing along bits were kick it and 2 baddies and lets play ball ?? ppl do love kick it i have to give it to them. But there was no love talk OR kick back i believe in the power love talk couldve had. another one of sm's scheming little tricks. But to be fair i dont think they included dream's popular songs either. Phantom was also the best looking stage by farrrrr if i didnt know better i would accuse them of wayv favouritism lmao. i was also surprised at how big of a reaction yangyang got??? he had some of the biggest cheers like on par with ty and jaemin but he had less screentime we really do love pink yang. To me him and xiaojun were the most striking on the big screen. And jaehyun is soooo handsome sorry he got me again. And what else. They shouldve gotten rid of that animation in between clips thats like listen to nct and develop parasocial bonds buy more posters and dont be sad. they couldve fit in like four more songs. OH and it pissed me OFF that they included ty's solo song id never heard the full thing before and it was actually just as bad as i imagined its crazy how he managed to not sing AT ALL the whole song and also barely dance. and my friend said it was worse than sticker so congrats to the geniuses at sm for giving this dipshit the first solo mini 👍

watching a movie about a sport you know nothing about can be the definition of vibing without comprehension and i experienced that today

2022 Top Hits: We're back! Sort of

Hello, 2023. Hello, same old us. We're hopping back in here to share some life updates and tell you about some movies, series, and books that made our hearts expand in 2022. How have you been, Barely Sane friends? We wish you a year of ease this 2023.

Colleen

2022 was kind of a whirlwind for me. I did this thing at the start of the year where I wrote myself a hopeful letter. It kind of steered me into this path of exploration, of saying yes to new experiences. So naturally, a lot of new things happened and I didn't get to read/watch a lot of things. I also went back to taking my master's, so I died half of the year. I managed to watch 85 films and 38 shows and finish 22 books. Some of my favorites I have already shared in past posts, so the six things I'll share here are those that I haven't yet talked about.

Nobody Knows (2004) - Dir. Hirokazu Koreeda

I always talk about Koreeda because his work always manages to exceed expectations (wellll except for Broker, which was still good! but I don't like it as much as the other Koreeda films). Nobody Knows is one of his most-known films, so I had high expectations, but the film still exceeded that. This was a tender, quiet ache, and—as what Koreeda usually does—delves deep into issues of home and family, and the mundane flawedness of humans. Koreeda captured what it's like to be a child thrust into a harsh, indifferent world, but his characters aren't resentful or full of hatred. Until the end, they choose survival—but they also choose hope. Link to more info here.

2. The Worst Person in the World (2021) - Dir. Joachim Trier

I didn't think much about this film after I saw it, but I guess the fact that I still remember the plot months after having seen it says something. I wouldn't be friends with this girl, and I couldn't relate to some of her struggles, but I felt invested and I wanted her life to turn out fine. I also appreciated how Trier showed his unique style throughout the film, and there's even one sequence that I sometimes still think about to this day due to my curiosity about how it was shot. Not my ultimate favorite, but would recommend. Here is the synopsis.

3. Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

There's nothing that hasn't already been said about this book, but I'm adding it to my list because it's one of the few memorable books I read last year. I found this very interesting because I didn't know a lot about the Korean diaspora in Japan. But this also tackles a lot of other things, aside from having a whole cast of characters whose depth made the story feel so real. I get that the TV adaptation changed a couple of things to make it more hopeful, because this one was tragic. It reminded me of Do Not Say We Have Nothing, which I also highly recommend.

4. Not Here to be Liked by Michelle Quach

I usually don't read young adult romance anymore, but the premise of this one reminded me of the type of YA that I liked. The main couple had clear chemistry and I think younger readers would appreciate how it tackles feminism. Looking forward to reading more Michelle Quach!

5. Yellowjackets (Season 1)

This one has a very interesting premise: a high school girl soccer team survives a plane crash in the 90s through (spoiler) a ~smattering~ of cannibalism and shady cult activity (spoiler). (Actually I'm not sure if this is still a spoiler since this is what it's known for). The show follows the girls before and immediately after the crash, and as adults with a dark past. This was thrilling, scary, and unpredictable, and I loved that this was executive produced by Karyn Kusama who directed Jennifer's Body. Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis, and the girl from The Book Thief are part of the main cast. And Frodo is part of season 2, so yay!

6. Street Woman Fighter (Season 1)

I already talked about Our Beloved Summer and My Liberation Notes in another post, so I'm going to talk about a dance competition show instead to lure you into checking out Korea's reality/variety shows. Street Woman Fighter put a spotlight on the street dancers of Korea, and on top of that, the competing groups were really fun to watch. It made me want to try dancing, even though I have zero skills.

When I did speak up about my difficulties, the system wasn’t going to change. Nobody told me “make your own choice”, “it’s up to you”, “what do you think”, “How are you these days” I sound like I’m bad-mouthing K-pop. You know Nikita? It’s just like that movie. We were basically puppets. Who cares if I’m exhausted?”

Choi Jin Ri, you were absolutely right. Idols need to unionize. Things have only gotten worse.

•has an addictive personality, which is partially why he has a drug and alcohol abuse problem and struggles with self harm

•rarely goes out in public because hes known to have violent outbursts. he once committed mass murder at a burger king because people were looking at him weird and EJ had to drag him out of there before the cops showed up

•HATES the light he literally duct taped over his windows so the light couldn’t get in (he forgot blackout curtains exist)

•his room smells like pennies, skunk weed, and foot stank

•is actually an incredible artist but acts like hes not. literally everyone loves his work except for him

•secretly loves cartoons. he loves taking bong rips and watching scooby-doo to escape reality :)

•has never had a healthy relationship with anyone in his life, usually just sticks to hookups

•its a miracle this man is still alive considering he survives off gas station snacks and week old sodas that have been sitting on his nightstand

•speaking of he once drank an old dr pepper after he forgot he put out a cigarette in it

•got a tramp stamp when he was blackout wasted

•writes random thoughts and draws little doodles all over his bedroom walls; it kind of looks like a mental asylum in there

•also his bed is literally just a blood stained mattress on the floor with no sheet and a singular pillow and blanket

I'm multilingual and can speak up to four languages; English, Malay, Mandarin, and Cantonese. I've also been actively learning Korean for years, if Duolingo lessons count🤣

“If we’re still single in ten years, let’s get married.”

You and Chenle were sprawled across the rug on your living room floor, munching on the bags of snacks he had brought from his trip to the Asian grocers. Chenle’s focus which was once set on the movie playing on screen quickly averted to your figure, nonchalantly adjusting your position on the couch, shrimp chips in hand.

“That’s a stupid idea,” He replied, rolling his eyes at you.

“Why?” You sat back up whining, “We basically live with each other, know everything about each other and I wouldn’t mind if you were the one to kill me in my sleep so what’s the problem?”

Chenle snorted, shuffling back to reach into your bag of chips before placing a couple in his mouth, softly chewing on the savoury goodness.

“Why do I have to wait ten years to marry you when we could just do it now?”

The hand that held your precious snacks halted mid-air, your head turning to face your best friend’s innocent eyes.

You weren’t exactly sure how you were meant to interpret his response, was he finally done with the dating field? Was this his way of telling you that no one was ever going to love you? Or was it-

“Don’t tell me that you didn’t realise that I had a crush on you until now,” Chenle interrupted your thoughts, sending you a pointed look from below.

You sat in silence, blinking every so often at Chenle who now sat crouching on the floor, cackling at your obliviousness to his feelings. Though only laughter overwhelmed his current state, there remained a state of what seemed like disappointment. Maybe disappointment with your lack of response or maybe disappointment of what felt like a silent rejection of his confession, which — was not true at all.

You and Chenle met in the second grade when your homeroom teacher had seated the two of you together for an art project. You were a relatively shy child, opting to quietly pick up your paintbrush and sketch out a design on your own whilst Chenle sat with his arms crossed, clearly unimpressed with this arrangement.

“You don’t have cooties do you?” He grumbled, peering over at your poor attempts at drawing a field of flowers.

You merely shook your head as you pushed a small brush to his side of the desk, gesturing for him to join you. You remember him giving you that skeptical look, the same one he holds at you now for a few seconds before sighing and picking up the brush, scooting his chair closer to yours.

“Fine, only because you look like a flower.”

Badump went your heart.

Your feelings only grew as the years went by, with you pathetically waiting for a sign of reciprocation. It wasn’t like Chenle was actively talking to you about other girls, in fact — he just didn’t seem interested in anyone, period.

Throughout the course of your schooling journey, you and Chenle did everything together. From being each other’s prom dates to going to each other’s respective sporting games, with no signs of romantic affection from him — it was only fair to assume that nobody had caught his eye yet, until now.

With Chenle’s infectious laughter bubbling in the background, you quietly spoke, “What about the ring?”

Chenle paused, whipping his head back around to face your cautious gaze.

“Well, if we’re gonna get married, then I want a ring,” You mustered out, holding your hand out to him.

Chenle glanced down at your outstretched hand in awe, eyes widening at your unexpected response before letting out a short giggle.

“Just you wait Y/N. I’ll get you the prettiest ring in the world, just for you.”
