Pre-Release Sonic Frontiers Things
The dead silence regarding the next mainline game between the release of Forces in 2017 and the teaser for Frontiers in 2021
The game being leaked as far back as July 2020 and again in January 2021 without anyone realizing it
The “Unstoppable” trailer for Sonic’s 30th anniversary showing a 2 second clip of Sonic running that’s never been seen before and the wild guessing about what it was
Some people thought it was for a new game, others thought it was for the Sonic Colors remake that was leaked earlier, and some thought it was for an Adventure remake
The first teaser giving us zero context for anything about the game, only showing Sonic running through a forest with some cool particle effects and some random symbols
Everyone clamoring to figure out what the symbols meant, some saying it looked like the word “up,” some saying it looked like the word “zap,” and still others joking that it was shaped like a gun
“Shadow the Hedgehog 2” trending on twitter for some reason
People datamining the video and finding text that read “PS/Rangers” and “Time_Warp_sfx”
“Well you see if you rotate the symbols like this, they look like they could be a part of a Sonic Rangers logo”
All of this happening on the same day
Another round of mostly-dead silence and rumors before the absolute eruption in June of 2022
Day One: we get 7 minutes of Sonic running around the first island aimlessly and most people on YouTube tear it apart. Day Two: we get another six minutes of Sonic fighting random enemies for a while, and YouTube is slowly starting to warm up to it. Day Three(?): we get an early review for the game from IGN, and to many people’s surprise, it’s quite positive.
Day ???: A Nintendo Direct gives us the first actually well-marketed trailer for the game so far and public reception is going way up as more people are realizing just how much previous marketing was affecting the game’s perception
The return of “it’s GOTTA be good or else Sonic will die” only with even more fear after Forces
Like genuinely I cannot emphasize enough the amount of people wanting to be hyped but being held back by intense dread because of Forces (and other 2010s games usually)
The uproar over them reusing the Forces model for Sonic
“Sonic of the Colossus” jokes
The hype reaching a breaking point as we finally get a story-based trailer; people were losing their minds over big things like the new villain and Sonic’s arm glitching out, along with small things like Sonic actually using his eyebrows to emote in-game for the first time since approximately 2008
Theorists bursting at the seams with all the new content, Sonamy fans also bursting at the seams because those two haven’t meaningfully interacted in a While, people being terrified for Tails because at this point we’ve only seen Amy and Knuckles
The “Assimilated Sonic” trend, where people drew all sorts of interpretations for what would happen if the corruption on Sonic’s arm spread to the rest of him
The evolution of the Assimilated Sonic trend, where upon finding out you can go Super Sonic early in the game, people made designs for a potential new, stronger form (with varying degrees of glitchy aesthetics)
People tearing apart the cyberspace stages by pointing out reused level design (not just locations, though they also didn’t like that)
Everyone loving the ending theme “Vandalize” but the mixed reactions involved when people found out there was an explicit version (not used in the game itself of course)
“Can we have a Chao Garden this time?” “No. Have a Koco.” “...can we have a Koco Garden then–” “NO”
Tailstube being relevant on at least one occasion, possibly two
The prologue comic being posted in two parts despite very obviously being a single chapter
The prologue animation being posted a week before release and everyone collectively screaming “KNUCKLES!!!” and “NEW LORE???”
A few people getting their hands on it pretty much the next day and creating a whole new swarm of leaks for people to avoid (I heard one guy was even streaming it on twitch but I can’t confirm this)
And finally, it being released a day before God of War: Ragnarok and thus creating new friendly competition, in a similar vein to last time with Mario Odyssey
Edit: People were also very excited about the Big fishing minigame, but more importantly, we were CONVINCED that Sonic and/or his friends were going to have amnesia as a major part of the plot so a lot of pre-release content was about that specifically
The reason for this was that someone found, I believe it was a set of pitches for Sonic games, and the one that seemed the most like Frontiers mentioned Sonic having amnesia - not to mention the fact you collect things called "Memory Tokens" in the game to save Sonic's friends

A Look Back At A Certain Splatoon Promo Image...
Tumblr media
The more I think about it, the more I think that we got Splatoon 3 (and another event) a lot later than Nintendo originally envisioned. The image above was released by Nintendo at Midnight (JST) January 1, 2020. I even remember where I was when I first saw it: partying on New Year's Eve in a karaoke bar with friends. Right away people were wondering about the image, and what it could mean. This also wasn't too long after the fake-out "Where's Marina?" promo where the answer was "oh, she took the photo!" Of course, the most obvious hidden meaning was the text on the bottom disguised to look like a reflection in the waves: SOS. And written in the waves, combined with the "reflection", said "Save Our Salmons". This had people wondering if this was a hint as to a later plot. Maybe a new DLC for Splatoon 2, or even a Splatoon 3. Looking back, it's obvious now that this was meant to be our first tease for Splatoon 3, given the plot of its Story Mode revolving around the consequences of Salmon Run and why Mr. Grizz was having us all steal eggs. The only thing is...we all know what happened in 2020, and what it did to numerous industries, especially tech-based industries like video game development. We know now that Splatoon 3 development started about as soon as the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest ended, just like development for Splatoon 2 kicked into high gear after Marie won Splatoon 1's final fest. Given how fast Nintendo put out Splatoon 2 after only a year and change of development, it seems like it's possible Nintendo intended Splatoon 3 to be released sometime in 2021 instead of this year. But of course, a certain virus had other plans. Eventually with vaccines, air filtration technology, and the virus evolving to be overall less deadly, we we able to slowly get back to an almost normal lifestyle, and a lot of the bottlenecks in the supply chain started to ease up, but in 2020 itself, everyone's plans were thrown into... well... chaos. If I were to make a guess, absent the pandemic, we would have likely gotten the first Direct Splatoon 3 teaser in September 2020, with a release date of Fall 2021. Instead, Nintendo, trying to keep Splatoon hype going, gave us some extra rerun Splatfests, including a rerun of Splatoween over Halloween weekend (after all, not like anyone had any real plans for the holiday itself), while they played catch-up on game development in a pandemic-strewn world. And that leads me to another topic: The Super Mario Splatfest. 2020 was also Super Mario's 35th Anniversary as a franchise (discounting 1983's Mario Bros and 1981's Donkey Kong), and if you may have noticed, much of the celebration spilled over into 2021, including a Splatoon 2 Splatfest fitting the theme. Again, absent the pandemic, I think we would have gotten the Super Mario 35th Anniversary celebration confined within the calendar year of 2020, with the related Splatfest in July 2020, one year after "Final Fest". Again, this is just my musing, and I could be amazingly off-base with this, but given the original timing of the "Save Our Salmons" promo, it seems to make sense. Stay Fresh, Don't Get Cooked, and Catch Ya Later! 😊

Rocket league season 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gameplay in Rocket League, where players aim to hit the ball into the opposing team's goal using their rocket-powered cars Rocket League has also been adopted as an esport, with professional players participating through ESL and Major League Gaming along with Psyonix's own Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS). The game earned a number of industry awards, and saw over 10 million sales and 40 million players by the beginning of 2018. Rocket League was praised for its gameplay improvements over Battle-Cars, as well as its graphics and overall presentation, although some criticism was directed towards the game's physics engine. Psyonix also recognized their lack of marketing from Battle-Cars and engaged in both social media and promotions to market the game, including offering the game for free for PlayStation Plus members on release. Psyonix began formal development of Rocket League around 2013, refining the gameplay from Battle-Cars to address criticism and fan input. Psyonix continued to support themselves through contract development work for other studios while looking to develop a sequel. Battle-Cars received mixed reviews and was not a success, but gained a loyal fan base. Rocket League is a sequel to Psyonix's Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, a 2008 video game for the PlayStation 3. Later updates for the game enabled the ability to modify core rules and added new game modes, including ones based on ice hockey and basketball. The game includes single-player and multiplayer modes that can be played both locally and online, including cross-platform play between all versions. The game went free-to-play in September 2020.ĭescribed as "soccer, but with rocket-powered cars", Rocket League has up to eight players assigned to each of the two teams, using rocket-powered vehicles to hit a ball into their opponent's goal and score points over the course of a match. Versions for macOS and Linux were also released in 2016, but support for their online services was dropped in 2020. Interactive Entertainment taking over those duties by the end of 2017. In June 2016, 505 Games began distributing a physical retail version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Warner Bros. The game was first released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 in July 2015, with ports for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch being released later on. Rocket League is a vehicular soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix.

Playscore of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on PC, based on critic and gamer review scores. On the other hand, the visuals are a…choice, I guess? Everyone looks closer to MCU versions of themselves than they do to comic iterations, but they’re just different enough to be somewhat unnerving. There’s also an incredible voice cast, featuring Nolan North, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and more, so VOA nerds like me can geek out even more. On one hand, I am all about third-person action games and superheroes, so the chance to play as favorites like Thor and Iron Man in a huge game is a tantalizing one. Check out the new Marvel Avengers: A-Day trailer here We’ve known for quite some time that Square Enix was working on a cooperative, third-person action game featuring the Avengers, but this week was our first look at gameplay footage. Perhaps the biggest news of the show is the unveiling of Avengers: A-Day, developed by Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal, Nixxes Software, and Crystal Northwest and published by Square Enix. It’s 2019 and we have three blockbuster Marvel games coming out in the next 12 months, but are any of them going to be any good? Check out these E3 updates to see what your favorite superheroes will be up to in the near future.

Random thoughts about things that were showcased during not-E3 month: Nintendo edition
With the cancellation of E3 it seems that Nintendo decided to return to a format similar to the one they used in 2020 (AKA the original year with no E3).
So instead of the typical E3 General Direct they usually host in June, they had specific individual announcements (like the Pokémon trailer at the beginning of the month), a Direct specifically dedicated to a game nearing release (Xenoblade Chronicles 3) and a Mini Direct dedicated to third party announcements.
Honestly, it’s a bit weird they decided to return to this format considering it wasn’t that well received back in 2020. It was easier to justify back then due to the pandemic and the lockdowns affecting their overall release schedule, but nowadays that they have recovered a certain cadence with their releases, not so much. Then again, Nintendo taking weird decisions isn’t something entirely surprising. According to rumors, apparently their primary motivation for this was to avoid being conflated with Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest (which sounds …kind of petty on their side, but again, not entirely surprising).
I presume as well (and this is just my personal speculation on the matter) that the change in the way Nintendo markets their games nowadays might have played a factor as well. Since Furukawa took over the company’s presidency, it seems that their general philosophy is to keep their marketing efforts primarily focused on upcoming short-term releases. Apparently, the idea is to magnify the exposure of games that are close to release while avoiding “distracting” customers with things that are still far off, all with the intention of maximizing sales. This means in practice that they will keep the lid on heavily anticipated games like Zelda and Bayonetta until they are very close to release, but are perfectly fine with announcing a new game just a few months (or sometimes even just a few weeks!) before it launches.
So, with E3 cancelled and most of their release schedule for the upcoming months already set, it seems they didn’t see much point in having a General Direct for more first party announcements. Now, strictly speaking, it’s not as if they actually needed to announce more first party games during the Summer. With Xenoblade set for July, Splatoon in September, Mario + Rabbids for October and Pokémon in November they are effectively set up for the rest of the year. If they still have any other first party releases for this year (most likely for either October or December), they still can hold a General Direct in the Fall to promote them.
While for all that we know, this marketing approach to increase sales might indeed work, it’s also very jarring for our overall gaming culture, where the “hype” cycles for new releases can last for years. And given how accustomed we are to their E3 Directs with big first party announcements during the Summer season, not having one of those this year just feels disappointing. Still, even with all of the above said, what was shown wasn’t actually bad per se.
I was already sold on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but still appreciated the Direct. It was a fun time, the story looks intriguing and it seems like the game is taking the best aspects of all it’s predecessors when it comes to the gameplay.
The Partners Mini Direct was also good, although it can’t be denied it would have been far better as part of a larger General Direct. Still, it was nice to have confirmation that Nier: Automata and the mainline Persona games are finally coming to the Switch after so long. The Pac-Man World remake and the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy collection were also really nice surprises. Finally, Blanc, The Legend of Wright, Harvestella and Lorelei and the Lase Eyes all look like interesting games.
Then there was the new trailer and gameplay showcase for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. I still can’t believe how this unholy combination of franchises could led to such a great game as the first one, yet here we are. From the look of it, the sequel seems to be improving on the original in almost every respect, so I’m definitely looking forward to it. It also comes out on my birthday, so that’s really nice.
So, not exactly what we wanted or expected from Nintendo for not-E3 season, but not really that bad either. I just hope they will actually have a General Direct for the Fall season. I presume if they do have one, it will most likely come in September after Splatoon 3’s release. I really hope that’s the case and that we will finally see Bayonetta 3 getting a release date, as well as more of the Breath of the Wild sequel.

I haven't shown you guys this for a while back, but it's a info update from Nintendo you've got it checked back in June 30th, 2020. All I can say was I'm glad that the company and the president listen, especially with the Joy-Con Drift still messing things around. However, my Joy-Cons from my Switch are acting fine. Although I got little bit drifts like last few months (I think), but mine are still fine....For now if I'll be able to send to fix it soon.

Tea Time with Souldin. Souldin reacts to the latest Nintendo Direct Mini; a Partner Showcase so short he doesn't even get time to taste test a tea.
By the way, I highly suggest you check out the Japanese Version of this direct. It shows off a lot more games and is a lot better... even if I can't understand anything their saying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t57NnJAao0A

AA7 Speculation Post: One Year Later
here we go again.
A year and a day ago, I made a speculation post about if/when we’d ever be seeing AA7. Obviously, my claim that AA7 would be announced in September 2020 did not turn out to be true, but later that year we did get a leaked calendar containing information on the new ports for Chronicles, and also plans for a new aa7, which I summarized in this post.
Now that we have Chronicles we can verify that the leaks contained legitimate information (as if a statement from Capcom saying they were hacked wasn’t legitimate enough). So that leaves us with one key question: is AA7 still happening? If so, when can we expect it? As well, what other information from the leaked calendar can we consider, especially with early sales data on Chronicles? In addition, what are the implications of this new survey on Chronicles from Capcom?
All of that will be discussed under the cut so that this doesn’t take up too much space.
Revisiting The Calendar
Once again, here is a rough translation of the calendar that was present in the leaks:
Tumblr media
As a note, in this post, I’ll be referring to our new games as “Chronicles” to prevent this from being blocked by people avoiding spoilers.
So: this original calendar, generated before the pandemic, had Chronicles releasing in Q1 of FY2021 - and it’s also important to note that in Japan, each fiscal year starts in April 1st, so FY2021 is actually April-June 2021. This shows that Chronicles was pushed back about a quarter from their expected release date. However, Chronicles was a port of already existing games, therefore somewhat less work was needed on them - upscaling models and textures, adding in some new features like autoplay and story mode, and of course, the English translation and voicework were needed, which is still a lot of course, but less compared to development on an entirely new game. In addition to that, the pandemic hit AA7 in its early development stage, assuming this schedule was still being followed by the time the pandemic hit. That could cause more delays than expected.
So the original plan was for AA7 to be released in Q3 of 2021, which corresponds to October-December, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the series in October. While it’s a desirable goal, it’s quite likely the pandemic pushed it back at least a quarter, if not more, if not cancelled it entirely. ... haha.
We’ll only know the fate of AA7 for certain when it’s announced. Which it is possible it may never be. However, I have two theories for, if AA7 is getting an announcement, when it will be:
1) Sometime during September 2021, either in the leadup to or during Tokyo Game Show this year. These are for the same reasons as I outlined in my initial speculation post. It’s a popular time for Ace Attorney game announcements, after all. TGS, according to what I can find, will be held online this year from September 30th to October 3rd. If Capcom announces AA7 earlier in September through Famitsu, like they did with AA6 for example, then we can expect to get some information during TGS...
2) Sometime during a 20th Anniversary Event, possibly in October 2021. I’m assuming AA is planning something for the 20th anniversary - Chronicles wasn’t really marketed as a 20th anniversary release, for instance. If they can’t release a new game for the 20th anniversary (which at this rate, seems unlikely, as we’re about two months out from that with no word about it) then an announcement would be just as good at generating hype for it.
Naturally, if we reach this time next year with absolutely no news on AA7, it’s probably safe to say it’s been cancelled or at least delayed so severely that anything we currently know about it isn’t worth much.
There’s one more point of interest on the calendar: reconsidering the porting of 456. I feel that this depends heavily on how well the Chronicles ports are doing; if it’s not financially viable to keep porting games, then why bother? So, let’s take a look at that.
The Success of Chronicles
As I write this, it’s about two and a half weeks since the release of Chronicles worldwide. So... how did the games do? It’s a bit hard to tell, especially as I am not a game marketer and don’t know the expectations for Chronicles. What is obvious is that, if Chronicles does much better than expected, porting 456 and possibly even the investigations games seems likely. (If Chronicles, indeed, does especially well in the West, than a porting of the investigations games and localization of investigations 2 after ten years could very well be possible.) If Chronicles does absolutely terribly, it damages the chances of porting, and possibly of continuing the series. If it does terribly especially in the West, where the games are essentially new, it could damage the chances of any new games being localized at all.
So, a lot is riding on this, and I don’t know enough to tell how well it did. Here’s what I have found, however:
Nintendo Enthusiast reports on Famitsu sales of Switch games, and overall thinks it’s not doing so great. Chronicles ranks third on the list of Switch sales in its first week, with 14,460 units sold, over 4000 less than NEO: The World Ends With You, which was released on July 27th. Keep in mind that Chronicles was released in Japan on July 29th, which is two days later, and that these are only Japanese sales (where they’ve had Chronicles for years on both mobile and 3DS) and only Switch sales, where NEO:TWEWY is currently only available on Switch and PS4 (Chronicles has the additional platform of Steam, where there could be many more sales). In the next week, Chronicles ranked 22 overall, with NEO:TWEWY at 23, though of course they’re still a little less than 4000 units behind NEO:TWEWY overall. Slightly closing the gap, I guess.
How about overseas data, then? ... It’s hard to tell. I can find this report from gamespot which discusses the top 20 games sold in the US in July, and Chronicles is not on the list, while NEO:TWEWY is at 16. However, they don’t give any number for the units sold, and it seems that they aren’t considering digital sales for a lot of them, so it’s hard to tell how much of a hit that is.
However, let’s go back to Japanese sales for a bit, and look at the 2019 Trilogy re-release for a comparison against Chronicles. Allegedly, combined Switch and PS4 sales in the first week of the trilogy’s release only amounted to about 8000 units, a little more than half that of Chronicles’ Switch sales. It’s also important to note that the 2019 trilogy ended up being the only ace attorney game to sell over a million copies. Ace Attorney is not a big series; I’m sure Capcom takes this into account when considering sales data, especially for ports. If Chronicles does end up doing better than the trilogy overall, it’s definitely looking good for ports and especially so for Chronicles.
However, there’s more to this than just sales data.
The Survey
Capcom now has a user survey for Chronicles, which you can answer even if you’re partway through the first game. I believe it’s only open until September 30 2021, so if you think you can finish the game before then, I’d recommend filling it out once you’re done so that you can give the best feedback.
It asks you a bunch of questions like what platform you bought it on, why you bought it, your expectations, and all sorts of detailed questions on the various mechanics, difficulty and enjoyment of the trials and investigations, satisfaction of visuals, plot, characters, music, and even free response sections for what you liked and disliked about the game. It’s a very detailed survey that’s pretty long but I think is worth filling out. At the end they ask you to fill out some demographic questions (such as age, gender (male, female, other), country, what kind of things you like to spend money on, and what kind of games you like, what platforms you have to play games on). But what’s possibly the most interesting question is this:
“If a new [Chronicles] game is released in the future, do you think you would buy it?”
This means that, depending on the answers to the survey, they could very well decide to work on a third game to Chronicles.
This has huge implications for the future of the series. I’ll probably make a separate post on plot-related stuff later, but for now... let’s talk about logistics.
In my initial AA7 speculation post I said I highly doubted that they would ever make another Chronicles game. I also said that they probably never would be localized, so, guess who’s a clown now.
Right now the AA series is in a bit of a dry period, with no new games having been released in the last four years. As well, with Yamazaki (the director of the investigations games and AA5/6) having left Capcom, the next director of the mainline games is completely unknown. As described in this video, the main reason Chronicles ever came about was because Capcom went ahead with mainline AA5 before Takumi could come back from the Layton crossover. Now, since 2017, we don’t really know what Takumi is working on. It’s possible he’s gone back to mainline to work on AA7 (though of course, there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that he has, so definitely don’t take that as any sort of confirmation).
However, if we do get a Chronicles 3, it’s quite likely Takumi would return to work on that, as he directed the previous two games. In addition, if Chronicles ends up being such a success to completely eclipse mainline (from what I’ve heard, though I have no serious proof, Resolve is considered as highly rated as T&T by many Japanese fans) then the series could permanently go down the road of writing more Chronicles games, leaving mainline stagnant (which, let’s be real, it’s already stagnating). The success of that is uncertain considering how neatly our current Chronicles duology wraps up, but... we’ll have to see how things unfold in the future.
For now, I highly recommend filling out the survey to give your input to the series’ future directions. Maybe mention that you want localized investigations 2 somewhere in the free response section because uhh I forgot to do it in mine. do that for me.
TL;DR
Main takeaways from this post are:
- I personally expect an AA7 announcement either during TGS or a 20th anniversary event
- If Chronicles does extremely well, then 456 ports are likely to happen, and I personally speculate investigations ports (along with localized investigations 2) will as well.
- Fill out this Chronicles survey before September 30th to give your input on the games and possibly the future direction of the series. I recommend completing the games before you do, but if you think you won’t before September 30th, you can fill it out at any time.
- We Very Well May Get Another Chronicles Game. Who saw that coming. Not me.
Thanks if you read through all of this, let’s hope September/October doesn’t leave me looking like a fool again.

Note
sorry if you already knew this and i misread ur last post but if you didnt know yamazaki left capcom around july 2020 so we dont know whos directing ace attorney or if anyone is directing the series at all anymore
Oh for real?????? Gotta wonder if that's part of why there seems to be no news on AA7. Or if they're even gonna bother continuing the franchise at all at this point. Supposedly those Nintendo leaks (the ones that revealed the DGS localization accurately) revealed it's in the works but it seems shrouded in total mystery.
