Some actual thoughts about OG Team Tardis + River: Jack flirts with River as he does with everyone, River flirts back and it's the first time the Doctor or Rose has seen him get intimidated. Nine doesn't trust River in the slightest to begin with. He can sense her timeline is a mess and that his own is entangled with it and that makes him nervous. She doesn't hide that she knows things about his future and that makes him even more nervous. Because he's weary of River, he tries to keep Rose as far away from her as possible. This fails miserably because trying to keep either of these women from doing something they want to do makes them more likely to do it. Rose has just recently been introduced to the concept of bisexuality from having Jack on board, River rapidly becomes her first crush on a woman that she's actively aware of. River once lets it slip in front of Rose that River's the Doctor's wife and Rose just accidentally blurts out "You can do better for yourself." Rose trusts River more than either of the boys do right off the bat. When Nine questions Rose about it she gives an answer similar to the one from The Doctor Dances when she was asked that about Jack. ("He's like you, except with dating and dancing.") She can see how River is similar to both Jack and Nine in how they all have rough pasts and view themselves as not great people yet through their actions keep showing that they're loyal and caring actually. Jack makes her soooo fucking nervous sometimes in how he puts his life at risk, because she knows he will be immortal... if he survives to that point, but he sure af isn't yet. River knows about Bad Wolf already but obviously can't say anything. River is quite protective of Rose. River is used to seeing people out of order in time but this is the youngest she's ever seen Rose and seeing her so naive and open and trusting makes River want to throw down with anyone that threatens Rose. Nine and River get into full on yelling matches a lot early on. It turns out to be good for him to have an outlet for that with someone who keeps pushing and pushing. Combo of the last two points: Their yelling matches are not infrequently about Rose. Rose puts her foot down about that, she doesn't really like them yelling at each other to begin with but she won't put up with it when they're both yelling about her. She reminds them both she's capable of standing up for herself actually and doesn't need either of them defending her from the other. It's when Nine actually internalizes the fact that River is sincerely protective of Rose and Jack (and himself too) that he relaxes around her more. She joins Nine and Jack in the super secret 'protect Rose without making her feel like we think she can't protect herself' club

The way that Jack, Rose, and Nine feel far more like a poly trio in late Season 1 rather than any sort of love triangle is INSANE. The vibes are FERAL and IMMACULATE. The kisses in Parting of the Ways. The sharing-story banter in Boom Town. The flirting. "Buy me a drink." "Continue on with whatever you were doing." The dancing. Jack dancing with Rose. Rose dancing with Nine. Nine offering Jack a dance. Everything Ninerose related. "Before you, I was a coward." The fact that Jack only makes sure that Rose is safe before dying for them, Rose brings him back to life, Nine's every interaction with either of them in the finale...honestly the way that Ten interacts with Jack in Utopia (ESPECIALLY the scene in the radiation room/Jack's reaction to hearing Rose is alive) makes even more sense if you realize that he and Jack are exes and that they once loved each other and Rose equally and then the Tenth Doctor WRECKED that by leaving Jack behind

Alright, I'll say it: Jack Harkness and the Doctor's relationship is possibly the most fleshed out/complicated dynamic in Doctor Who and that is INCLUDING the master/doctor relationship. Seriously, think about it:

the fact that when they meet jack is presented as sleazy con man and the doctor makes him brave- makes him good

but that they are both willing to die for rose as long as she is safe

and then she comes back and dooms them both to live (even though jack has already died for her and the doctor WILL die for her)

(ninerosejack is canon and you cannot convince me otherwise)

but then the doctor sees jack as immortal as someone he COULD spend the rest of his life with

and instead of embracing it like you'd think he would because he is so wrecked by people leaving him/being left by him the doctor RUNS bc the Doctor is so scared of jack of what he means of what he is

jack ends up abandoned in dalek dust goes back in time to find the doctor suffers a hundred years alone/being tortured but STILL WAITS

(screw amy being the girl who waited or rory being the boy who waited- Jack Harkness is the boy who waited and he did it FIRST)

Jack finds out that he was abandoned. that the man that he loves HATES the sight of him. that the doctor would rather have a genocidal murderer than have him

and so Jack gets the hell out of dodge to go to a man who DOES love him

and don't get me wrong Jack loves Ianto and Jack DOES remember Ianto until he dies as the Face of Boe don't forget that (protecting Novice Hame from the virus as he couldn't Ianto

BUT AFTER EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR HAS DONE TO JACK JACK STILL LOVES THEM

Jack still considers five billion years cursed to never die to be BETTER than the alternative: dying a young time-agent-turned-con-man

Jack has more reason than any other companion save maybe Amy to hate the Doctor & yet spends 20 years in jail to rescue Thirteen still LOVES HER

AND AFTER FIVE BILLION YEARS HE ORGANIZES THAT FIRST MEETING ON SATELLITE FIVE HE ORGANIZES 9/ROSE'S FIRST DATE

jack harkness is a living ghost a reminder of the doctor's failures a physical fixed point and yet he still loves the girl who cursed him and the time lord that turned him into the kind of person that would give his dying breaths to protect the last of humanity in a dying city and tell the doctor that he is not alone

because fuck it, YANA was a warning but also a reminder a final gift

jack had been there all along, a ghost an echo a PROMISE

there is no more human character than jack harkness

love the character of adam. rose asks to take him with just because hes cute and nine agrees because he can't ever say no to her. nine helps her lie so she can impress him. hes her boytoy for ten minutes and he fucks shit up immediately. this man didnt get more than a single episode in before being kicked out and we never hear about him again. hes only ever a narrative device that tells us it cant ever be more than just rose and the doctor, that no one can come between them, and then a single episode later they meet jack and the narrative says "ok yeah i guess one guy could actually"

Wym Jack's whole introduction is meant to be about jealousy? Rose is clearing bringing him to the Doctor to ask if he can be part of the polycule. The Doctor inviting Jack into the Tardis and dancing with Rose in front of him is him accepting Jack as a new addition, duh.
