FURTHER SKETCHES - EL 

For her first idea,she remembered the images we had already taken at the gym and thought that splitting one face over two posters would be one of the best way to show a sense of unity across the three posters. she also thought illustrating the sweat would be a good idea if we went for the cleanliness data idea. Overall, she likes the idea but believe elements could be used for the final piece from it.

For her second idea, she used the same continuing shape/image across the three posters of fire behind the people working out. This being an illustrated element like Daisy’s first plan. Though we could include people going other poses for their work out. The only issue is that the design is quite generic which would work with whatever data we chose though it wouldn’t fit as perfectly as the first idea. 

For her third idea, she played with the designs she found from Nike by Wieden and Kennedy with the simple dark a and the bright white simple type on top of the image, although she wasn’t entirely sure if it fit the brief we had been given as the data would have just been displayed in words.

Nikes posters are bright, bold and eye catching with large type and detailed photos of sportsmen. This draws in the sporty audience by capturing their attention. From this research we agreed that we should use a geometric sans-serif in our own posters, liking the boldness of the style which works with our design.

ADIDAS RESEARCH (Daisy & El)

Adidas is another well known brand world wide and closely related to sports and exercise. Like Nike, their typefaces are bold and easy to read. Their posters usuually follow a theme of geometric shapes (like Nike) however instead of showing full body images of sportsmen, they focus more on specific products they sell, such as shoes (shown below). This is their method of selling shoes to their target audience.

Their posters are always full of vibrant colours which was a theme we wanted to keep within our own posters.

Evan Hecox is a multidisciplinary artist and designer. His work for the past two decades has included drawing, painting and printmaking as well as graphic design and illustration. Media of the work extends from small drawings to gallery installations and large wall murals. Much of his work takes inspiration from travel with imagery that ranges from major cities to remote desert scenes all of which is united by a keen eye for the mood and feeling of a particular place and moment in time. The work often reveals an underlying beauty locked within subject matter that would normally be overlooked or regarded as ugly.

Mundane objects like bicycles, power lines or grocery carts take on new life as intricate line drawings. Urban scenes are filtered with an eye for abstraction, reducing down the scenes into simple shapes and colors, at times distilled to pure abstract works or typographic interpretations of the world he sees. Exploring human existence both from how we affect our environment and also how it affects us. His view of the world explores the constant, organic change that occurs both in cities and in the natural world. He has shown his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States as well as the Europe, Australia and Japan and Hong Kong. 

His work in the realm of design has references from Japanese prints, European poster design, 1960’s era illustration, Bauhaus typography and folk art. For more than twenty years he has created graphics for the brand Chocolate Skateboards, with hundreds of his designs in use on streets and skateparks as well as many of his boards hung as artwork in private homes. Projects also include various design/illustration projects for clients such as Herschel, Vans, Yardbird, Burton Snowboards, Monster Children, Nike, Volkswagen and the State of Colorado.

Graphic Design the New Basics: these two pages in this class book, in my opinion, are excellent examples of rhythm in publication design. As in the Bauhaus Book video, we can see how the designer struck a good balance between typefaces, hierarchy to establish importance on the page, and the image.

Graphic Design the New Basics: this is another illustrative example from the book. I believe this is a good example of typography hierarchy to establish the order of importance on the page because we can see how the designer differentiated them by using different colors, typefaces, and sizes.

Dermaglós: there are two ascenders in this word. One focuses on the letter "d," while the other focuses on the letter "l."

Body: on this body lotion, I found a descendant in the word "Body." The descender is located on the letter "y."

AQUAFINA: on this bottle of water, I discovered a letter with a counter. It is the letter "Q."

CHER: the crossbar here is on letter “H”.

By numbers: I believe the typography used for the words "by numbers" has a large x-height. this is due to the letter "b" having a short ascender.

Dork: this example from the book is a good example of a font with a small x-height. The ascenders' length in relation to the x-height can be seen.

IPad Air: because it is clean, transparent, and clear, I believe this is a good example of "Modernist" design.

“Shoe Dog”: this Nike history cover book, in my opinion, is a good example of a design that tries to convey more than just the text. I believe this occurs here because the typeface and golden color are attempting to convey transparency and superiority, which I believe the Nike brand wishes to convey to its customers.

Nike Air Max 270 React “Bauhaus Art” (Jun 2019 release) Copped these the day they released on SNKRS. I like the colors. I really dig the Air Max 270 design and am looking forward to trying these which pair the Air Max 270 design with a Nike React foam midsole. Should be a super-soft lifestyle shoe. Thanks Nike.
