Capt. Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement on Friday in Benin, said that media reports suggesting that the hoodlums made away with Ghana-Must-Go bags containing money were inaccurate. Sokoya, who is the Public Relations Officer of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Benin, said efforts ate ongoing with other security agencies to arrest the suspects and bring them to book. “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a series of inaccurate narratives in the media space in respect of an attack on a military hilux vehicle at Akpakpava road by some armed gunmen on Wednesday, 23 August, 2023. “Contrary to several reports, a clerk from 4 Brigade Finance office and a driver went to town to fix the office printer and also stopped at WEMA bank to process and collect a bank statement. “The armed gang in a red Toyota Camry car, who must have trailed and noticed that the soldiers were not armed, opened fire on the vehicle, at a traffic light junction probably thinking the soldiers were carrying money. “But when they discovered that the vehicle was empty, they zoomed off. Unfortunately, some of the bullets hit the driver on the chest and he died. “A lot of reports have insinuated that the armed robbers made away with huge cash in a Ghana-Must-Go bag. This is Lance Corporal, a soldier, an instructor with his Army Battalion in Geidam, Yobe state who reportedly disappeared for about 2 days. He was however sighted among the terrorists who attacked Geidam town last Sunday. On the strength of this, his commanding officer tracked his phone and he was pinpointed at a point in Gashua, hundreds of kilometers from his supposed duty post. A Signal was sent to the Army base in Gashua and dragnets were spread out for him. Tuesday morning, L/Cpl Jibrin disguised himself and boarded a bus to Gombe but was identified and nabbed at the checkpoint in Gashua. He was arrested and handcuffed. The warning was conveyed during a lecture on the responsibility of troops deployed to various check points in the Division area of responsibility. According to a statement on Friday by the acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations of the Division, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, the sensitisation lecture was held at Abakpa Military Cantonment, Enugu. “The military has been involved in manning checkpoint across the country due to insecurity which has threatened the sovereignty of the country. “Despite the numerous advantage of military checkpoint, there has been series of complaints from the civil populace on the unprofessional conducts of troops at military checkpoints which negates the aim of setting up the checkpoint. “Roadblocks and checkpoint are mainly security measures implemented by the authorities to monitor and control the movement of vehicle and people in a particular area. “They serve various purposes including law enforcement, security and traffic management,” he said. The division’s spokesman said that various topics were discussed during the lectures, including “Implication of Extortion and Punishment to be Awarded to Erring Personnel”. “The general public is therefore advised to desist from giving gratification to soldiers at checkpoints and report cases of misconduct by troops to the appropriate authorities. “The Division will continue to carry out it assigned and constitutional role in line with global best practices,” he assured.
