Nie Huaisang at ten isn't that jarring, even considering the adult version he left behind, because he's pretty much exactly as Jiang Cheng remembers him.

Seeing Nie Mingjue at thirteen as a sullen child instead of the looming specter of his memories takes some adjusting.

Nie Haoyu wouldn't take no for an answer and it hadn't helped that A-Ying had been thrilled at the invitation and immediately started peppering the Nies with question that they'd answered in good humor the whole way back. Nie Haoyu seems delighted with A-Ying, finding him amusing and impressive and complimenting Jiang Cheng several times on raising such an impressive son.

He just glares back but Nie Haoyu's good humor is unaffected. His memory of the clan leader is spotty at best and he's coming to the slow and horrifying realization that it was Nie Huaisang and not Nie Mingjue that got his personality from their father.

Joining a clan is probably good for them, long term, and the Nies are the only other tolerable major clan, not that he'd ever expected to get practically kidnapped by them.

The only problem is that Nie Haoyu is going to be dead in two years time and if he wants A-Ying and the Nie siblings to have some semblance of a normal childhood, he's going to have to. Do something about that.

I think my favorite wwx misconception/unreliable narrator moment is when he's watching nieyao fall apart during the empathy sequence and the entire time he's like wow... jin guangyao is SO smooth. He's completely manipulated nie mingjue he's sososoooo good at dealing with him. And then you look at the actual situation and literally NOTHING is going like how jgy wants it to go.

Like. Even after the stairs. Wei Wuxian is like "wow jin guangyao knows exactly how to get nmj to do what he wants" and the jin guangyao in question. Is standing there. Literal days after getting kicked down a flight of stairs. By Nie Mingjue. Outwardly blank but inwardly ripping his own hair out like god FUCKING dammit i'm done. I can't do this anymore. Literally nothing else has worked the only solution left is murder. And wwx is like "he's totally in control of this situtation" it's so fucking funny he sees the most basic display of deescalation skills and his mind is fucking blown 🤯 he didn't know people could do that!

They really do have a lot in common! #Maybe it is because they are similar that they can't make it work past the war. #Maybe it is the similarities that make JC feel even worse about WWX drifting away from him and towards LWJ. #This is all to say I think the dynamic between LJW and JC is very interesting and not something I see talked about. #In the *end* it becomes something along the lines of 'LWJ ignores JC' but god. Missing the same person so painfully. #The grieving takes very different form but they both still grieve the same person - essentially in isolation from everyone else. #Other notes I *need* to add: The end of ep 13 took me out with the falling scream.
