#spoilers #major spoilers #it’s not talked about enough how well done niddhog’s arc as an antagonist is #the tragedy of his existence. the way his anger and inability to let go has torn his family apart to the bone. #the way even his father gives up on him. the way he dies alone and not at peace and only the uneasy peace follows in his wake. #the way his boss fight makes it obvious he is desperately legitimately trying to kill you. #the way hw expertly balanced his tragedy with the fact that his grief does not absolve him of the sins he is responsible for #and the way his children bear the scars of his rage just as ishgard bears their own. #he is a deeply deeply angry and vengeful character but this doesn’t make him unlikeable. his boss fight is a funeral dirge. #the way the theme of moving on can only come to fruition with his death. #and the way his legacy is co-opted by zen//os so even in death he cannot rest. #(and ill//berd) #ishgardposting #saint.txt

Can’t sleep so I’m gonna post about random ff14 thoughts I’ve had now that I’ve basically finished heavensward

My main two thoughts where “wow that was way shorter than AAR” like I started playing this game at the beginning of October (when they added stormblood to the demo) but like of that time much much more of that time was spent playing through aar like I blew through heavensward and second was “holy shit that was way way way better then AAR” like near the end of AAR patch quests weren’t bad but like I want interested the whole time of heavensward and didn’t feel like I was doing a bunch of busy work (there are occasional moments but generally it was pretty good about stuff you where doing having purpose) also I liked the characters way more there wasn’t really anyone I hated or dreaded seeing

Koka stormed out of the Fell & Co. bookshop, feeling his feet burn the concrete ground with thousands of starlights. With an enraged wave of his right hand, he caught into the weaving of the current reality and opened it, stepping into another world.

Before he finished stepping out of the portal, he heard the shrieking cries of the angel he knew as Muriel, and his heart froze in his chest. The voice carried their pain, carried their anguish and the loss they had lived before that. Lingering in the rotten air, the memories of the eyes ripped apart from all the surrounding angels assaulted him. He ran to the place he heard the screaming from and almost gagged when he heard, before he saw, the cracking of their skull and neck. He hid back behind a wall, keeping his mouth shut with his hand, panic settling in his stomach.

Hmph… useless little soul. 

The smell of celestial dust was brought to his nostrils by the air, and he slid down to the floor, petrified. His heart was beating so loudly that it took over his head, bumping and thumping against his temples, and closing his eyes made it all worse-

He heard footsteps stop right in front of him, and he opened them, only to be faced with the Supreme Archangel, looking at him like he was but a poster to be ripped away and smashed to pieces. He heard himself wheeze in panic, just as Aziraphale’s hand slid down the wall until he was crouching in front of him, giving him a smile colder than the void of Space. “Tell me, little, shivering angel…” Anything, anything, please, anything. “Why does your hair wear the colours of the demon Crowley?”

Koka stayed silent, his body entirely frozen, counting each fraction of a second passing before he would inevitably be destroyed by the being looking at him with the eyes not of a Guardian, but of an Executioner. When his left hand cradled his right cheek, he whimpered and closed his eyes, trying to muster the power he needed to get away.

The portal expanded under him, and he drowned into the floor’s opening weaves with a yelp, leaving the broken Supreme Archangel behind him and carrying with him the scalding feeling of his hand, leaving a scar by his right ear.

He fell for days without end, his breath losing the battle against the strain of the wind. It was interminable and unstoppable; his collapse was both too fast and too slow for his portal to reopen for him, if even it had been allowed to. The curse he was living through felt like a rift from Time itself. Only when he was about to land did he feel his powers in his grasp again, and he crashed painfully against a dented rock.

“Oh… oh Lord, what happen-” His mouth couldn’t finish his sentence, the shock put him in comatose.

When Brok starts talking he proceeds to slide into his workshop in middle of his sentence and the timing made it look like Freyr's reacting to the absolute tomfoolery happening before him 💀

the whole point that the horde cannot resist their call to arms (just like ishgardians) and are being born just to fight and die in a war (just like ishgardians) only gets more horrifying once you remember that a dravanian’s physical, permanent form in adulthood is dictated by their desires and the kind of life they lead as children. Ehll Tou’s quests show this explicitly; she develops dextrous hands and an upright posture to facilitate tool use.

entire scores of niddhog’s brood are born just to be weapons. have spent their entire lives hearing nothing but niddhog’s hatred and calls for violence. how many siege dragons, vishap, wyverns, and more look like that because they were born to fight a war.

the ishgardians cannot even remember the original sin they committed. the younger generations of niddhog’s children are being forced to fight for a family member they never knew. cycles upon cycles upon cycles of violence.

Thoughts on Midgardsormr!

For a moment I'd forgotten he was even in the story so it's possible it'll change slightly as I think about how the WoL verse goes more, but! Inge has been in Eorzea for a while now. She's heard about the Battle of Silvertear Skies. She's seen the state it left Mor Dhona in. So while she's a seasoned adventurer who doesn't get terrified easily, if she'd been the kind to wet her pants, she most likely would have when he did, in fact, awake in front of her. She honestly thought he was just dead and the Ishgardians were being dramatic.

And then all of a sudden, here she was, deprived of Hydaelyn's Blessing for no other reason that because she was chosen and he wanted to... test her? See her merit?

And he made a covenant with her?

She left the Keeper disoriented, and for a while, every time he reminded her of his existence, she'd jump out of her skin because it still felt so surreal that she somewhat kept forgetting it was real x)

But nowadays she's pretty unfazed. If anything, there's something humbling about having a bond with a being as ancient as him.

(I'm not entirely sure how the whole thing went about Ishgard, save for the fact that it was Aïcha that saved them. But with Midgarsorm being awaken by Niddhog's roar, there's a chance Inge made an appearance in Azys Lla against Thordan, and most likely kept helping from then on until Yda and Papalymo contacted them.)

Aye, let me regale you all of my FFXIV OC who technically doesn't exist because I don't play FFXIV and have only had the lore explained to me by mutuals

So imagine a guy, right? John 'Warrior of Light' Fantasy from FFXIV is whoever you need them to be, and she's also full of a bunch of different versions of themself like Fray and the John Fantasies of Fantasies past and also haunted by Zenos' own shadow self (maybe).

WOL is just Built Different as per the events of the game, surviving things they shouldn't, getting body snatched, soul split apart, the whole nine yards of anime things that happen to people to hurt them. However, they don't ever actually die, because they are the aforementioned super badass hero who ends the cycle of shit once and for all, as Hydaelyn says herself "Now all of you will Walk to your Ends after the Warrior of Light Brings the Shadows."

Having been explained that, I took all the bits of the lore and went "What if my WOL was a zombie?" and thus, we have Z.M., otherwise known as Zombie Mailman (Note: I suck at naming my OC's so I always just have tagline code names for them, but Zombie Mailman is actually called Z.M. because it's funny that he has an actual tagline name of his initials without knowing how on the nose it is)

The basic idea for this guy is that FFXIV is full of guys who don't die: Emmet-Selch, Zenos, the Primals, Niddhog, etc, all these dudes who persist out of spite and willpower for all their various reasons. However, despite all the noble/terrible goals they each try to sell you on, they all share a pretty important distinction: They're super unhappy. All of them are immortals but they also fucking HATE being alive for one reason or another, so I took this concept and went:

"What if the Warrior of Light was sent from Hell to deliver these immortals their last rites? After an eternity of suffering, they've clearly forgotten how to die, so the emissary of hell isn't here to drag them back but to help them pass along." And thus, my WOL OC is a literal zombie mailman who runs around working as a mail delivery man and moonlighting as a world saving hero because Someone needs to help these poor saps fucking die already.

Furthermore, all WOL's in canon just kind of appear one day, so the way my John Fantasy gets Fantasy'd is that he literally just crawls out of the ground naked in true zombie fashion, gets found by the Delivery Moogles and the Lalafel Post Office and is offered a job, and now everyone stares awkwardly as the cute little woodland creature guys have this 8ft intimidating dragon-pangolin guy whose clearly dead helping them in the office and backhanding any and all rude customers through a wall.

He has blue skin and wears the standard mailman fit (colored white because I like it but also the white medical towel doctors put on corpses), uses her pronouns interchangeably (corpse who has no identity except what they make), and they're actually very sweet but always kind of nippy and frustrated because all these guys who keep postulating about the nature of humanity are just trying to dodge the fact that, no they really have just forgotten how to die, like IDIOTS. Also a fun little wrinkle to his design (in my head) is that even though he's this ancient corpse, ZM is actually very youthful in appearance because it's a nice juxtaposition to all these older characters who are literally melting but still alive vs a young person who is very much dead.
