Put it in perspective girl !
I feel apprehensive writing about my own grief when there are tens of thousands of Ukrainians are pouring towards neighbouring countries to flee the Russian invasion. It feels self indulgent and wrong but I feel compelled. Its nearly 10 whole months now since I kissed goodbye to Daryl. Right now I have feelings of abandonment. I miss Daryl and being intimate and I desire his warm body next to me and his affection and comfort.. I’m naturally a people pleaser and want to portray mostly a picture of strength. I am trying to love myself like Daryl loved me, take care of myself, and do what makes me happy. I try to live like this now and mostly my lifestyle of casual work and chosen social activity means I bumble along okay. This is important after living under the shadow of scans for nearly 5 yerras. However sometimes life throws you a curve ball and things go wrong like a lodger moves out which derail me. Only first world problems that i suddenly find being solely responsible for is absolutely exhausting. I am annoyed with myself for feeling like this. The women talking on the news now only has a plan to escape Ukraine with her daughter and dog , and has no idea what the future holds for their country or themselves. I feel bad thinking I was hard placed right now and for panicking about my future. Perspective TC as Daz would say! I remind myself I have had some good times recently including my trip to Tenerife, nights with friends and family and a great gig.
I portray on social media pictures of strength but I do have hard days when I cry real horrible ugly tears. I have found there are times when completely inebriated I fully let myself go and allow my ugly cry to let the pain escape. Sometimes there’s anger and it’s scary . This week I did this in front of my friends shouting how unfair this life is and how I felt abandoned. I am now listening to a women talking about taking her children to relatives in Hungry and going back to Velke Slamence and the interview is punctured by a sharp, piercing cry. A woman's face crumpled in anguish before she was led swiftly away after getting some news is the image watched. I understand this raw emotion although in my safe house with my children nearby I feel selfish. I need to reframe and I read the tale about how Kisa Gautami was struck with grief, she could not bare the death of her only child and how Buddha reminded her of the inevitability of death and how she must try and live what life she has. I know I need to do this as life is a privalage but it’s okay to acknowledge my pain as life changed so rapidly only a year ago. It is still raw so feeling stuck is okay. I’m told I am not meant to make big decisions, but I have a very changed life since Daryl died . I might not be making life-altering decisions but I am trying to picture a life that makes me happy but the pictures in my mind are only ones that include Daryl. I try to hear the perspectives of those who love me but I’m not guided as I guess no one wants to tell me what to do. I listen instead to their plans and feel sad that my life has no set direction. I know I want to surround myself with good people and maybe work again and travel a bit. I hope these aspirations will formulate plans as time progresses. I getting to a stage when I’m not ashamed to ask for company so that is progress. There are times when I want to kick myself for being so self pitiful and when I make mistakes but maybe these are opportunities to learn about my journey and make wiser choices in the future. I used my group counselling to talk about my ugly crying this week as I needed to see if I really was losing my mind, and I credit a big part of my current sanity to those other grievers who shared their experiences and feelings with me, I’m pretty sure I’d be completely nuts without them. Widowhood is messy. It doesn’t fit into a neat little box and I guess openly screaming is a step forward and is an accomplishment. Even on my darkest days I see light and I am actually blessed I know in comparison to the nightmares being played on the news. Put it in perspective girl. Tracey x

Looking for lithium? Look to the stars
By Simon Campbell, Monash University and Yerra Bharat Kumar, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Lithium is used in everything from medication to mobile phone batteries, but where does it come from? We know it is mined here on Earth, but where it is created in the universe is less well understood.
We studied hundreds of thousands of stars like our own Sun and found they produce huge amounts of lithium late in their lives. This discovery, published in Nature Astronomy, was not predicted by our best models of stars, indicating that some physical process must be missing from stellar theory.
A fragile element
Tumblr media
Lithium is the third element in the periodic table, containing three protons in its atomic nucleus. Credit: Wikipedia
Lithium is a special element – it was the only metal produced in the Big Bang that created the universe 13.7 billion years ago. While other elements have been produced in copious amounts by stars since then, the amount of lithium has increased relatively little.
The source of even this small amount of lithium is still a matter of scientific debate. About half is thought to come from high-energy cosmic rays hitting heavier elements like carbon and oxygen in interstellar space and breaking them up into lighter atoms.
Astronomers regard lithium as fragile, easily destroyed in the hot interiors of stars. By analysing starlight astronomers can determine how much of the various elements, including lithium, they contain. Observations of lithium on the surface of stars has confirmed that it is gradually destroyed as stars get older.
The enigmatic lithium-rich giant stars
However, there is one group of stars that is a notable exception to this rule of lithium destruction: the so-called “lithium-rich giants”. These stars, first discovered about 40 years ago, contain up to 1,000 times as much lithium as other giant stars.
Although not very common – only 1% of giant stars are very lithium-rich – just how they create their lithium remains a mystery.
One of the main problems astronomers have faced in identifying a way these stars could produce so much lithium was our lack of knowledge about exactly what type of red giant stars they were.
All Sun-like stars eventually become red giant stars when they have burned through all the hydrogen in their cores, becoming brighter and more red in colour. They expand their size by hundreds of times, often engulfing the planets orbiting them. (Don’t worry – the Sun won’t do this for another 5 billion years.)
When stars become giants they progress through three different giant phases (which all look quite similar in colour and brightness), so it is crucial to understand what phase lithium-rich stars are in when they produce lithium.
Of the many theories, one has now come to the fore. About ten years ago our group recognised that the lithium-rich giants were likely in the second giant phase (also known as the red clump stage). These giants burn helium in their cores for about 100 million years.
This theory was later confirmed by studying the oscillations of these stars to determine their exact point in their life cycles.
We now know for sure that the vast majority of very lithium-rich giants are red clump stars.
Tumblr media
This Hubble Space Telescope image shows stars at various stages of their lives, from young blue-hot stars to older red giants. Our study focused on the lithium content of red giant stars. Credit: NASA, ESA, and T. Brown (STScI)
Investigating the red clump giants
In our new study, we used an Australian survey of one million stars called Galah and a European space telescope survey called Gaia to investigate the lithium-rich giants.
Our 200,000-strong sample of Sun-like stars (with mass and metallicity similar to the Sun) confirmed that lithium-rich stars are in the red clump phase.
We also detected the expected destruction of lithium in the “red giant branch” phase, which comes just before the red clump.
Sun-like stars become lithium factories later in life
But something strange stood out – other stars in the red clump, although not extremely lithium-rich, contained much more lithium than stars in the late stage of the red giant branch. As the red clump phase comes directly after the red giant branch phase, we concluded the stars must be producing lithium when moving from one phase to the next.
Importantly, it appeared that all of the red clump stars contained more lithium than those in the red giant branch phase. This implies the Sun itself will manufacture lithium in the future, as our study focused on Sun-like stars.
In effect, by studying only the extremely lithium-rich stars, representing just 1% of giants, astronomers had been focusing on just the tip of the “lithium iceberg”. It now appears all red clump stars have been enriched with lithium, and the extremely lithium-rich stars are only the tail end of the distribution.
In our paper we show that, on average, the stars increase their lithium content by a factor of 40. The amount of lithium produced in just one of these stars would be enough to make electric car batteries for 20,000 trillion cars.
Not predicted by theory
How this lithium enrichment comes about is unknown. It is not predicted by our best models of stars. Clearly there is some physical process missing in stellar theory.
What we can say with our data is how often it occurs – it appears to happen to all Sun-like stars. We can also say when it occurs – some time between the end of the red giant branch phase and the beginning of the red clump phase.
Tumblr media
Lithium is the third element in the periodic table.
For our next study we will attempt to constrain the timing of the lithium-production phase more precisely. This information will help stellar theorists, including those in our group, to determine what physical process is behind the lithium production.
Finally, since at least some of the newly created lithium will end up being blown off the star in stellar winds, it will also help us understand how much these stars enrich our galaxy with lithium, and, ultimately, planets like Earth.

Nell’s eyes narrowed flatly, amber-green fixing on her with obvious irritation. “Christ, yerra-” He took a breath in, and let it out long and slow.
He and Shar had had their fair share of arguments. Their fights. Things got thrown, broken, walls contracted a mysterious case of holes punched through them. Stuff went missing days afterward. Largely, though, the hurricane happened around them - a lot of collateral while they left each other whole to make up when they pleased.
Sometimes, it took hardly an hour. Others, weeks passed.
Still, their barbs were mostly of the passive aggressive variety, and little was commonly lobbed directly at their opponent.
Except today.
Today, he turned the racket in hand, popped the yellow-green ball into the air, and aimed straight for her when he swung. “Arrogant sumbitch,” He muttered under his breath as the tennis ball went thok! on the other side of the court.

St. Patrick’s Day by John O’Brien
'Tis the greatest splash of sunshine right through all my retrospection On the days when fairies brought me golden dreams without alloy, When I gazed across the gum-trees round about the old selection To the big things far beyond them, with the yearning of a boy. Drab the little world we lived in; like the sheep, in slow procession Down the track along the mountain, went the hours upon their way, Bringing hopes and idle longings that could only find expression In the riot of our bounding hearts upon St. Patrick's Day. There were sports in Casey's paddock, and the neighbours would assemble On the flat below the homestead, where the timber fringed the creek; With Australian skies above them, and Australian trees a-tremble And the colours of the autumn set in hat and hair and cheek. Mighty things were done at Casey's; mighty bouts anticipated Made the Sunday church-door topic for a month ahead at least; On the cheerless Sundays after, with misguided hope deflated, We explained away our failures as we waited for the priest. So when morning Mass was over, it was trot and break and canter Helter-skelter down to Casey's, banging, pounding all the way, And the greetings flung in Irish, and the flood of Celtic banter, And the hectic flush of racial pride upon St. Patrick's Day. Everywhere was emerald flashing from the buggies, traps, and jinkers, There was green in every garment, and a splash in every hat, In the bows upon the cart-whips, in the ribbons on the winkers, In the wealth of woven carpet neath the gums on Casey's Flat. There the new dress faced the critics, and the little beaded bonnet And the feather flowing freely like a sapling in a gale; And "himself" inside his long black coat that bore a bulge upon it Where for twelve forgotten months its weight had hung upon the nail; And the "splather" of a necktie only once a year paraded, And the scarf that came from Ireland, "ere a one of you were born," And the treasured bunch of shamrock-old and withered now, and faded, Blessed by every tear that stained it since the cruel parting morn. Mighty things were done at Casey's. Men of solid reputation, Ringing bells and giving orders, kept the programme moving by; And they made you sickly conscious of your humble situation When they glared upon your meanness with a cold official eye. Every "maneen" with a broken voice and backers there beside him. And his socks outside his breeches, was a hero in his way; Every nag around the country with a raw bush lad astride him Was a racehorse with an Irish name upon St. Patrick's Day. Oh, the cheering that betokened those I knew so well competing, With their long legs throwing slip-knots, and the look of men in pain- Put me back into the reach-me-downs, and let me hear the greeting, Set me loose in Casey's paddock, where I'd be a boy again! Yes, 't-was good to be a pilgrim in a world that held such wonders, Though eternal bad behaviour put me neath parental ban, Though the staring, and the wandering, and a score of general blunders Got me gaoled behind the taffrail of the Old Mass Shandrydan. "Yerra Johnnie, stop that gawkin." Is it-with the pulses pumping, And the little heart high-stepping to the music of the drum- Is it "stop it," with a something in the young blood madly thumping With a foreword of the purpose of the pregnant years to come? Mighty things were done at Casey's. Mighty impulse was behind them, 'Twas the sacred spark enkindled that was burning to the bone; Never yet were men more loyal to the holy ties that bind them, And the love they gave their country made me conscious of my own. Never yet were men more loyal. Be they met in thousands teeming. Be they gathered down at Casey's with their kindred and their kind; They are marching on for Ireland, with the beauteous vision gleaming Of the altar-fires of Freedom in the land they left behind. Not a torch was ever lighted at a tomb where Freedom slumbered, But it smouldered-grimly smouldered-till the stone was rolled away; When it flashed across the half-light, rallying rocket glares unnumbered, Like the spangled blades of morning that bespeak the march of day. Not a voice was ever lifted, but an echo never dying Flung the slogan once repeated when the hand was on the gun; Though the prophet tongue was ashes, came the conquering banners flying With a dazzling watchword flashing, blazing signals in the sun. Yes, the world has ever seen it in its journey down the ages, Seen it writ in living scarlet in the blood that has been shed; And a hand re-writes the head-line deep across the lurid pages, When the stricken, fearless living meet the deathless, martyred dead. Thrills a leaping thought within me, when I see a land around me That has never seen the foeman's steel, nor heard the foeman's shot, At whose shrine I lit the tapers, when her witching sweetness bound me With an iron vow of service of a pulsing pride begot; To that big free land I've given all the love that I courses through me; That her hands have rocked my cradle stirs my heart in every beat. An Australian, ay, Australian-oh, the word is music to me, And the craven who'd deny her would I spurn beneath my feet. Thrills the thought that, did the traitor stretch a tainted hand to foil her, Did I see her flag of silver stars a tattered thing and torn, Did I see her trampled, breathless, neath the shod heel of the spoiler, And her bleeding wounds a byword, and her name a thing of scorn, There would flash the living bayonets in the strong hands of my brothers, And the blood that coursed for nationhood, through all the years of pain, In the veins of patriot fathers and of Little Irish Mothers Would be hot as hissing lava streams to thrill the world again.
