Oh man you guys, it'll be a minute before I can post properly but cleaning this morning was so gross, I have to think about how to even talk about it. It was a real "you live like this?" moment but it was me asking me.
When your to do list tells you to deep clean the counters and sink every month, YOU SHOULD DO IT.

Wish I had taken a before picture, but I have finally adressed the plant pot shame corner. It was a bunch of plant pots, some with some earth still in, stacked together in a long flat cardboard box that we'd used for re-potting and a long, half full planter sort of lingering in front of the heater next to it.
Now it is this:
Tumblr media
I emptied the pots of earth, stacked then together, threw away the long planter bc it had a leak and vacuumed out, then disassembled the cardboard box.
I have also vacuumed the filthy corner! I have defeated it! It holds no power over me anymore!

Today in the penultimate Salty Pirate Adventure of the year, I went four rounds against the oven.
I think it's a tie.
UFyH style, let's do Before and After photos!
Before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This oven is less than a year old. Its interior ought to be blue. Also, whichever among us three sometimes cooks directly on the grate, we all need to stop that.
(This is going to make my occasional Eggo Lunch more tedious. Worth it to have no more battles like today.)
I followed the directions to do a Steam Clean cycle. It loosened up some of the crud, but nowhere near enough. And I was doing myself an injury as I attempted to use a wet washcloth to wipe away the grease. No matter what I did, some grease continue to be on the wall and the cloth that I was using showed signs of needing to be cleaned.
I therefore made baking soda paste with which I coated all areas that were not heating elements. I left that to think about what it was doing for a quarter of an hour or more while I cleaned one of the oven grates.
I spent an hour and a half trying to wipe away all of the residue. Mostly the baking soda succeeded in breaking up the grease and pulling it away from the oven walls. But now I had a problem of a white film on everything it took repeated runs of completely cleaning out my washcloth and then wiping the entire up and down -- starting at the top rear.
This hurts like the dickens. I don't really bend the ways that I need to bend in order to do this job.
I now understand why it would have occurred to people long ago that an older woman living alone might decide to take a small child and put them inside of the oven. However it would have been a cold oven with cleaning supplies; and the child would have been instructed to reach all the places Auntie or Baba is too old or too disabled to properly scrub.
After:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am not delighted.
I put in more water and ran the Steam Clean cycle an extra time. Even though I got a clean damp towel to wipe everything down as soon as the half hour cycle had finished, I still have some stains. And I still have this white film on the glass.
Unfortunately at this point I am too physically uncomfortable to try anything further.
At least it's safe to use?
I'll give it another go in two days.

Decided to do "National Clean Your Home" Month this year, because I found it randomly on my "explore" page like 2 weeks ago and, well, I need motivation to organize my house. I've only lived here for 11 months already.
So, here's to me trying this out, and using my tumblr to keep track. Let's see how long this goes. Pinned for my easy finding this month.
Nov 1 - took down all random plastic containers in my upstairs rooms that needed to be cleaned for recycling, cleaned them, and put them with the plastics for recycling.
Nov 2 - put away two stacks of CDs that have been sitting on my stairs since... March? I think that was when I unpacked them. Also vacuumed living room floor.
Nov 3 - Took full recycling bags out to shed.
Nov 4 - Not even noon yet here in UK and I've already finally ordered the three shelf storage thing I needed for my kitchen, cleaned off half of my table downstairs, and filled another recycling bag of paper. Who knows what I can complete by tonight? update - just a bit more organizing downstairs.
Nov 5 - put stuff in crawl space that I've been meaning to for months. Will hopefully get the shelf thing today, and put that together so I finally have a place to put the slow cooker, rice cooker, toaster, and coffee grinder which doesn't involve just rotating things between counters and the table. Also have taken out two more bags out to shed for Tuesday recycling day. Update: I did get the shelf, and put it together, and now most of the "big" things sitting around my kitchen/table are stored away!
Tumblr media
Nov 6 - Folded most of my dry clothes, and prepared for recycling day tomorrow. It was a long day.
Nov 7 - Folded rest of the clothes, put out recycling and compost bins. Folded couch blanket, which was graciously re-nested by one or both of the feline overlords. I have been duly chastised.
Nov 8 - cleaned off my desk, finally. Had the excuse motivation that I finally got my work-provided laptop for my WFH days on Friday and today was my first WFH day since then, so needed to get it set up, but first I needed space for it, so... clean desk. Also put away the clothes I folded the last two days.
Nov 9 - I did not forget to do it, I just forgot to log it here. But my task yesterday was to finally hang up a three part picture I bought in Thailand like... `14 years ago, that has been one of those things just floating around between my table, some chairs, the stairs, and the table again. So, they are now hung up! I also went out and raked up leaves and did another round of weeding in the garden.
Nov 10 - Honestly, today was a long working day (it is only 445pm as I type this, but my working hours are 8am-345pm, and today was just overly long) because it was my last day before 1.5 weeks of annual leave. So I think the taking the full recycle basket downstairs to be sorted into the bags will be all I do today. I may do something more later, but who knows. Reader - that is all I did today.
Nov 11 - Swapped over to my "winter" duvet cover (fuzzy! Warm! silver and white like snow! Matching pillow cases!) and washed my other linens so that I could make use of **checks weather forecast** the ONLY sunny day of my entire 1.5 week break. May also finally finish clearing off that table. I won't hold my breath on that one though.
Nov 12 - Cleaned the litter boxes.
Nov 13 - Cleaned one step off.
Nov 14 - Busy day because landlord has an inspector coming tomorrow for the annual energy inspection? I was notified yesterday evening about this. Have so far (it is just before 10 am) sorted through the piles of stuff on my office floor, set aside papers for recycling and for shredding, vacuumed the office floor and upper hallway, raked the leaves into my remaining litter bags, and taken recycling bags to shed. Still on the list to be done today: Organize my bedroom closet, finish clearing off the table... vacuum the bedroom, vacuum the stairs.

I have spent my entire weekend off being a homebody and I almost feel like a human being again
That's not entirely true ig, Friday after work I went to the coworker I actually likes' house, they gave me a haircut and we hung out for a bit. Counting the haircut as my "cleaning/selfcare" thing for the day.
Yesterday I was gonna do the dishes... but then I spent almost 300 bucks at fleet farm instead. (My nice sorel winter boots have both developed cracks in the rubber that makes them waterproof... no good for work :( so I bought new, equally expensive, winter boots. Hopefully the carhartt boots are as trustworthy as their jackets.) I also did a ton of random organizing shit in my living room, put together a feather frame to cut down on that collection, etc.
Today I did the dishes! (And basically fuck all else! But dishes suck so I don't care.) I've been working on one of my twine rugs this evening to maybe start chipping away at that backlog, we'll see how far it gets.
Tomorrow I might prime some of my warhammer stuff after I get home from work, it should be nice enough the paint will behave and then I can not worry about it for the winter lol. I'd also like to hang a poster, I stopped at a cute art museum the last time I went home and got a poster of a pelican that's super pretty. Not sure where I'll put it though.... my living room is Animal Art but most of it is of animals I specifically worked with. Then again I do work with pelicans. Idk.
I'm pretty sure TB tests are this week at work too but that's pretty painless.

naclyoho update: deep cleaned the bathroom! probably not going to get everything on my list done by the end of the month, but i've knocked out a bunch of things that were really bugging me, so that's awesome. i still want to repaint the stairs, but we'll see how it goes. have to do that over 2 evenings, skip every other step so we can still go up and down, and also keep the cat off the steps while it's drying.

NaClYoHo Day 21
usual dailies (dishwasher, washed a load of laundry)
replied to emails
made ANOTHER doctor's appointment for this week to do paperwork stuff
called SIL to catch up and ask what we could get her girls for the holidays
ordered more Christmas presents and ran the numbers: almost half the shopping is done and we're on track to have everything, including gifts for each other, for under $350 CAD - I'm very proud of myself for my budget work and number crunching
called my dad to check in on him (ongoing divorce/separation has been very hard on him)
called my sister to check in on her (my dad's difficulty with the divorce/separation has been very hard on her)
finished my gorgeous rainbow tassel garland!!
10 minute tidy and journal. I'm trying out a new format/bedtime routine and it's been going really well.
And of course, forgot to clean and list the extra birdcage on marketplace. Like I have every day for the last three weeks. Oops
Tassel photo:
Tumblr media
48 handmade tassels, 12 feet of string, $5 at the thrift store, and a couple of hours of work!
On the to do list today is:
- clean and list the birdcage (for real this time)
- go through texts and reply
- doctor's appointment by phone
- get vaccinated, yayyyyy :D
- arrange pickup for old chairs I'm giving away
My mom's own childhood issues made Christmas a really difficult holiday for her, meaning that I arranged a good part of our family Christmases each year starting at age 17. This year is going to be extra tricky with my health issues and the divorce/separation, but I'm doing my very best 💪

i did not accomplish much for naclyoho yesterday or the day before, just folded some laundry before going to bed each night (though i did finally catch up on a lot of work work on wednesday which was such a relief for my brain and my work life balance, so totally worth not getting a lot of cleaning done)
however being fully caught up on my laundry meant finally having to accept the fact that i do not have enough room for my clothes and i will not be able to weed out enough clothing to make it fit. so new task added to my list to buy a wardrobe or something because i straight up can't put all my laundry away

Today was, I think, perhaps a good reminder to me about proportion, in terms of challenges and cleaning and life.
I love my family, but going home to see them involves a lot of compromise. Our priorities aren't often the same, but it usually matters a lot more to my family than to me what we do or watch or eat, so I often am just kind of along for the ride. It made it tough to do anything today that wasn't family-dictated, and I did start to fret about not being able to do much work on my "digital cleaning". Which is perhaps legit but does miss the point I myself make all the time, that this project is about making things better, not worse. Feeling thwarted because I can't put in arbitrarily self-assigned work when I could be enjoying the company of my family is valid, as all feelings are, but it also isn't improving anything. As my old acting teacher used to say when he didn't like our choices, "Valid...but incorrect."
So, if I didn't get much done today or if I don't get anything done tomorrow, I still made the day pleasant for my parents, I cooked a meal for the family and helped my stepdad do some chores, and we watched two decent Hallmark movies and a bunch of YouTube cooking videos. And my family had a good day, so that's sufficient.
Although it will be a bonus of some kind if tomorrow I can convince my mother to stop suggesting insanely elaborate dishes I should cook for myself on Christmas. I do not think the feast of the seven fishes is something I want to make, not least because I don't like cooked fish.
Well, all life is a work in progress.

National Clean Your House Month Day 6, 7, and 8
Day 6 - Threw out a bunch of boxes for recycling, loaded and unloaded the dishwasher
Day 7 - vacuumed living room rug
Day 8 - this one's a doozy bc I had a spark of inspiration to clean: deep cleaned the dishwasher, put away Halloween decor, organized baskets in the guest bedroom, refilled bird feeders, scooped out litter boxes, also took a bath so I cleaned myself too and that counts 😂

I swear this house is out to get me.
I was tidying up the living room, while kiddo is away with a relative, and I was getting a bit of a headache. The bare overhead light bulb was getting to me, so I thought, now might be a good time to put up a lamp shade and see if it helps.
So I get the cute little lamp shade that we found at the thrift store, pulled out the big step stool, and got started.
As I unscrewed the light bulb... The whole fixture came off in my hand.
It was only connected via two wires with little plastic caps, and the wires from the ceiling look extremely tattered, so now I'll have to find the correct fuse in the cellar and take it out so I can trim and strip wires.
And I may need to borrow a taller ladder, because on the top step of my step ladder I can only barely reach the remaining wires. Probably not enough to do the careful trimming I'll need to do to make sure there's enough left to connect the fixture.
So now I have a bigger headache, the room is dark, and I'm extremely annoyed with all of it. Cats have run off with the plastic caps.

NaClYoHo days 3-7
I stuck with laundry for days 3-6 because my cold was sucking. But I’m better now and ready to dive in!
Tonight, I managed to work through sanitizing more of the stuff that came from my parents’ nasty house (ick), cleaning the bathroom sink, and arranging some dried flowers in vases! PLUS two loads of laundry washed, dried, and put away, and a third that I may finish before bed.
Tomorrow’s plan is to scrub the stuff from my parents that needs SCRUBBING in the bathtub (truly do not underestimate how fuckin nasty this stuff is but also they’re gorgeous antiques or family heirlooms or I just think they’re neat *Marge with potato meme* and I don’t want to toss them) and then shower because all the nasty will be on me.
Thanks everyone for posting your updates! I enjoy reading about your progress, because it helps me to want to keep going too!

Photo descriptions in Alt text.
I decided to enrich my ttrpg enclosure by upgrading some organizational stuff.
I have owned these wooden boxes for years. They are great for tidying away minis or handout props, but within two weeks I stop seeing the boxes. That means I forget about their contents.
Maybe I can make the boxes stand out from the bookshelf a bit? Adorn with metaphors for the plot devices they should contain?
My first step on the little crate is to sand it down, at least around the edges. It's going back inside for tonight, because I cannot deal with the noise and smell of sawdust. Anyway, I want to install hinges on the lid so I can get rid of the nails.
Everything else needs at least a couple coats of this sparkly metallic blue stain. Except the coffee and lid -- those are for keeping me going.
I'm painting exclusively inside the cardboard box. Also they will stay in the box while they dry. I know that I will have spray, drips, and spills; I want to clean up easily, without damaging my home or the front garden.
.
Later:
Tumblr media
I thought a single coat to most surfaces would take me about fifteen minutes. I stopped here for the evening because I had been standing for over an hour.
The little cube takes the stain well! I continue to roll low on my minimal Mechanical Skills stat. Cube looks surprisingly even. I can see my haphazard brush stroke technique on the rectangular box. That one may require three coats to get a pleasing result.
I used the old smartphone box to wipe excess paint off of the paintbrush because I have no idea if it could look nice. What the hey, I don't have that phone anyhow.

I tried doing nanowrimo once and failed to keep up with it
So instead I'm doing national clean your home month
Yesterday I got groceries, including a 12 pack of Arizona green teas <3
Today has been an assload of laundry AND I cleaned my multitool and my scissors so they're not sticking anymore. Thank God for the miracle solution that is white vinegar.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to organize my desk area some, there's crap all over the place and it isn't doing me any good. If I'm feeling super productive I might try and get the neck pillow repaired, I tore a hole in it when I was digging it out to stash it in my car. Should be an easy enough fix, I just haven't put together the time yet.
