I tragically missed out on the poll, but my shy, scared of everything (a non-exhaustive list: the wind, a leaf, his own tail, my other cat's tail, a piece of paper, me, me sitting down (the action), me standing up (the action), me laying down (the action), me sitting, me standing, me laying down (the state of being), me turning the page in a book, me going to the food bag, me pouring food into his and my other cat's bowls, me refilling the water, a light being turned on, a light being turned off, a sock, a blanket), loves to snuggle but hates changes of state (see: above non-exhaustive list), 16lb maine coon, you-can-see-a-heart-shape-on-his-side-when-he-has-a-lion-cut boy is named Castiel.
He was originally named Slappy by the rescue because he always slapped at people who came near him and they thought he was too feral to not be released after he recovered from neutering (Detroit trap and release program), but it turned out that he was just absolutely terrified if he didn't have another cat around him to make him feel safe, and the rescue had originally kept him separate from the cat he had been rescued with. Then he bonded with Callie after that original cat was adopted without him, and when I was looking to adopt Cas, the rescue foster mom was like, "I've brought her because he needs another cat and she has accepted his clingyness, so we highly highly prefer that he go to someone who will take them both" (they really are bonded strongly). And I went, sounds good!
And then I couldn't decide whether to keep his name as "Slappy", and my roommate at the time and I were both Castiel fans from SPN, and she suggested either Castiel or Misha, and Castiel stuck, though I mainly call him "Cas".
all of my pets r named after fictional characters and i wanted to know how popular it was

I think I mentioned this elsewhere at onepoint on this hellsite, but during my MLIS degree, I did a UX analysis of the curated folksonomies of AO3 and Goodreads vs library catalogs. And today, after a PhD and now working with a data archive, I just this morning gave a talk to final year undergrads at the uni my archive is based out of, about how to search our data catalog without needing to be familiar with the controlled vocabularies, as our catalog can be searched with much less formal language.
I just spent 2 hours debating and testing and arguing in circles and bitching about library catalogs with two colleagues and I just want to say
AO3’s website is really, really, really impressive, functional and ergonomic and cohesive. the tag system is INCREDIBLE and AMAZINGLY maintained. this is my professional librarian appraisal.
I’ve found 1 library catalog that meets my standards. even the national library of France’s catalog is shitty in comparison to ao3.
praise.

Yeah, the "clean your house while adhd-ing" is part of why I decided to give this a shot... I have found through other attempts at managing my (then undiagnosed) adhd that setting myself challenges and things to check off or fill in helps with my motivation. Two days are down, though?
Good luck with moving! This time last year was when I was in the middle of moving myself, my cats, and a flat's-worth of a life of stuff from the US to the UK and it was... terrible... But on the other side, with my own office space and desk and comfy couch, can't complain too much?
Fuck it, we'll try NaClYoHo this year. Mostly bc I'm moving in a couple days anyway. I suspect after the initial burst of Things That Must Be Done Now my ADHD ass is gonna need some help finding motivation to exist. Luckily, the first few days I will have the motivation of "you are moving Saturday and therefore things need to be done."
Yesterday's accomplishments included signing forms at the doctor's to get my medical records transferred, ordering a desk, and seeing my grandmother before I leave (not an inherently stressful thing, but moreso it was stressful by being Something That Needs Doing).
Today's goals include buying Another desk (I'm going to have my workspace in one bedroom and a Fun Stuff space in the other room. I hesitate to call it a gamer space but if the shoe fits.) And also I need to Pack More. Hoping today I'll get the vast majority of the rest of my stuff packed, so tomorrow and Saturday I can just worry about the things I use daily.
Good luck to everyone else trying this for the first time!

Decided to do "National Clean Your Home" Month this year, because I found it randomly on my "explore" page like 2 weeks ago and, well, I need motivation to organize my house. I've only lived here for 11 months already.
So, here's to me trying this out, and using my tumblr to keep track. Let's see how long this goes. Pinned for my easy finding this month.
Nov 1 - took down all random plastic containers in my upstairs rooms that needed to be cleaned for recycling, cleaned them, and put them with the plastics for recycling.
Nov 2 - put away two stacks of CDs that have been sitting on my stairs since... March? I think that was when I unpacked them. Also vacuumed living room floor.
Nov 3 - Took full recycling bags out to shed.
Nov 4 - Not even noon yet here in UK and I've already finally ordered the three shelf storage thing I needed for my kitchen, cleaned off half of my table downstairs, and filled another recycling bag of paper. Who knows what I can complete by tonight? update - just a bit more organizing downstairs.
Nov 5 - put stuff in crawl space that I've been meaning to for months. Will hopefully get the shelf thing today, and put that together so I finally have a place to put the slow cooker, rice cooker, toaster, and coffee grinder which doesn't involve just rotating things between counters and the table. Also have taken out two more bags out to shed for Tuesday recycling day. Update: I did get the shelf, and put it together, and now most of the "big" things sitting around my kitchen/table are stored away!
Tumblr media
Nov 6 - Folded most of my dry clothes, and prepared for recycling day tomorrow. It was a long day.
Nov 7 - Folded rest of the clothes, put out recycling and compost bins. Folded couch blanket, which was graciously re-nested by one or both of the feline overlords. I have been duly chastised.
Nov 8 - cleaned off my desk, finally. Had the excuse motivation that I finally got my work-provided laptop for my WFH days on Friday and today was my first WFH day since then, so needed to get it set up, but first I needed space for it, so... clean desk. Also put away the clothes I folded the last two days.
Nov 9 - I did not forget to do it, I just forgot to log it here. But my task yesterday was to finally hang up a three part picture I bought in Thailand like... `14 years ago, that has been one of those things just floating around between my table, some chairs, the stairs, and the table again. So, they are now hung up! I also went out and raked up leaves and did another round of weeding in the garden.
Nov 10 - Honestly, today was a long working day (it is only 445pm as I type this, but my working hours are 8am-345pm, and today was just overly long) because it was my last day before 1.5 weeks of annual leave. So I think the taking the full recycle basket downstairs to be sorted into the bags will be all I do today. I may do something more later, but who knows. Reader - that is all I did today.
Nov 11 - Swapped over to my "winter" duvet cover (fuzzy! Warm! silver and white like snow! Matching pillow cases!) and washed my other linens so that I could make use of **checks weather forecast** the ONLY sunny day of my entire 1.5 week break. May also finally finish clearing off that table. I won't hold my breath on that one though.
Nov 12 - Cleaned the litter boxes.
Nov 13 - Cleaned one step off.
Nov 14 - Busy day because landlord has an inspector coming tomorrow for the annual energy inspection? I was notified yesterday evening about this. Have so far (it is just before 10 am) sorted through the piles of stuff on my office floor, set aside papers for recycling and for shredding, vacuumed the office floor and upper hallway, raked the leaves into my remaining litter bags, and taken recycling bags to shed. Still on the list to be done today: Organize my bedroom closet, finish clearing off the table... vacuum the bedroom, vacuum the stairs.

Probably... a series of real betrayals across the world between the time of Julius Caesar and the present day to justify why a gold necklace chain could be an artifact that causes the wearer to unwillingly betray someone they love, and why Helena would betray the Warehouse and Myka, for my 2010 nanowrimo Warehouse 13 fic "In the Hands of Time".
I remember sitting at my computer in my stateroom on the ship back in 2010 looking this up, and getting odd looks from my roommate when she found me reading wiki pages about Christina Gyllenstierna and the Stockholm Bloodbath.

Seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I loved (even as I cried a bit) the OFMD finale. Could more have been told in the story of a character? Sure, absolutely. Could I see this ending coming 6 episodes ago? Yes, absolutely. Was it a bad ending? No.
This ep wasn't bury your gays, wasn't queerbaiting. It was a story that hits us hard, because it was meant to. But if there was going to be an ending for this character, I would rather this, than an off screen fridging of a character, or whatever bullshit supernatural tried to pull. We've been on an emotional character arc over two seasons, and while arcs can absolutely continue on in further rounds, they can also end, and sometimes should, so that we and they don't continue on an endless cycle of problem and re-growth, problem and re-growth (I'm looking at you, OUAT).
I think the hardest thing about this ending has more to do with HBO shortchanging the series by 2 eps this season. The season itself suffered in the second half by having to fit so much plot into a condensed period, that we didn't get quite the same series "downtown" that we had last season. Had we had that extra time, maybe some of the things people hating on this ep/this ending hoped for could have happened, in some fashion, that would have tempered some of the anger.
That isn't the fault of the actors or djenks. If you want to be pissed at someone, be pissed at HBO.
But as a story, this was a satisfying ending, to me. If there had to be one, I liked this one, even though it makes me sad. I will be avoiding the fuck out of the fandom though, because from what i've seen so far, so many are just so fucking toxic when the story in their head isn't what appeared on screen.
Seriously people. Fanfic. That is what it is there for.
And side note - don't get me fucking wrong. I am going to miss the fuck out of this character, if we get a 3rd season. I love the actor, I loved-to-hate/loved the character throughout the entire series thus far. But maybe it is because I've been around fandoms where there have been less satisfying character arcs with similar endings, I am, and will remain, perfectly happy with this ending we've been given.

Yeah, I've been rather baffled by some of the things I've see on this hellsite, but mostly just ignore it.
I have LOVED this season so far. Do I wish it was a full ten eps so it doesn't feel quite so rushed? Yeah, but that is about the only thing I might complain about, in the end.
I love the character development for everyone, I love that there wasn't instant resolution to any of the problems, I love Izzy so much more than I ever thought I would for most of s1 (as an antagonist character I enjoyed his part in s1, but it took several rewatches of s1 and the start of s2 for me to really enjoy him as himself, even as I have loved Con for ages and ages), I love that the leads get to make choices and sometimes those choices aren't the best thing in the moment and then we get to see them deal with it (yes, I am talking about the sex), and I love, love, LOVE the conversations about being "whim-prone".
Between the two seasons, as much as I love s1, I think this one is my favorite so far
ETA - I feel like a lot of backlash is that people have built up their own headcanons so much that when things don't happen or characters don't react the way they've been envisioning in their minds for the last year, that becomes "a thing to complain about". I dunno... Back when I was younger watching episodic tv with the normal summer hiatus schedule, I do remember spending a lot of time guessing what might happen in the next seasons of Babylong 5, Xena, X-Files, the Star Treks, etc., but I don't remember being so violently (relatively speaking) whiny when my headcanons/predictions didn't pan out.
I like the stories we are told... fan fic is the realm for all the "what if's"...
ehh. i know i'm in the minority here (and we haven't seen the finale yet) but i'm REALLY happy with S2. i love everything about it. i think the pacing is pretty near perfect and corresponds well with the comedic and dramatic beats. i'm fine with izzy's arc; at least he's getting along with stede and the crew now and not being so much of a dick, and it's kinda nice to see him changing. i think the turmoil between ed and stede (and within themselves) is appropriate for the storyline and well executed (if painful to watch!) and if i didn't know the budget had been reduced for S2 i would've thought it was HIGHER based on how impressive the sets and costumes and cinematography are. also, the writing this season? is PHENOMENAL. so much funnier, more dramatic, sharper, and tighter than in S1. i love all the chaos and the drama and the darkness and the slapstick and the new characters and the cameos. I LOVE THAT MY SHIP FINALLY GOT TO DOCK. this season has been the most heartbreaking, heart-pounding, heartfelt, and entertaining thing i could've asked for and it's kind of a bummer to come on here and see people endlessly complaining about a show they love. i guess i just subscribe more to the djenks "like stuff" school of thought. just really loving this season and wish there were more folks around with positive thoughts to add.

11, if you count 5 different jobs in the Navy (engineer (enlisted), weapons officer, engineering officer, engineering certification officer, "useless superfluous surface warfare officer in a meteorology command" officer), 18, if you also count all the different projects I was an assistant on or individual classes I taught during my PhD... 9 if everything is collapsed down (with navy years split into enlisted and officer -> 2 and PhD years defined as either research assistant or teaching assistant -> 2)

I've been continually impressed about how the writers have actually written in the known history of these two into this funny little show...
Bonnet paying his crew a salary
his crew preferring Blackbeard as captain for the time they sailed together
Bonnet rebuilding a crew for the Revenge from those that Blackbeard had left marooned on a sandbar
Bonnet making someone walk the plank as one of the very few known pirates who did that sort of thing
the whole Act of Grace thing (though, granted, under different circumstances, but still, both Bonnet and Blackbeard together)
Bonnet being injured by the Spanish (just) before meeting Blackbeard for the first time
It's so funny the other night I was researching for fanfic purposes and I found out that Stede Bonnet was one of the few pirates that actually did the whole 'walk the plank' thing.
Imagine my fucking surprise come episode 6!
