#CryptidInJuly2023 Day 16: Nahuelito
Took a step back today and used some simple supplies rather than going for a full digital painting. It’s a challenge of managing expectations and enjoying the prompts. ☺️

Day 16: Nahuelito
(I guess is is a sort of sequel to the Iemisch story? Since its the nature doc style back in Patagonia? Call it a spiritual successor. Does this also count as spec bio?) Once again we return to the waters of Patagonia for another monster of the deep. Although this one may be a little more familiar to those of us. The Nahuelito. Some would call it the Nessie of Argentina. This is in part due to the transformation of the Nahuelito from regular sea serpent to the all too common plesiosaur shape. However this monster has one thing that sets it apart from others of its kin. Much like its namesake the Nahuelito is dotted with rosettes on its scales much like those of the jaguar. Although nothing has been confirmed so far, experts believe that these rosettes still work as camouflage despite the aquatic environment. Their dark green coloration compared to the Nahuelito's light green scales may in fact serve to disguise the creature as a school of fish. Of course this is only speculation so far. We can confirm however that the Nahuelito is as much of a hunter as its namesake. After days of observation the Nahuelito has been observed exhibiting hunting behaviors similar to that of leopard seals. Some people have started collecting teeth that floated onto the shores of Nahuel Huapi which has led to some cursory studies on the Nahuelito's diet. The teeth are about as sharp as a seal’s which would fit the idea of a mainly fish diet. In fact some have hypothesized that the main composition of its diet is fish. This would align with the consensus of the diet of plesiosaurs. The Nahuelito is much more aggressive when hunting, seemingly devouring schools of fish at a time. Some have wondered if this also comes from plesiosaur biology but there have also been arguments that this predatory behavior comes from the jaguar influences on the beast. However we can only speculate for now as the beast still remains elusive despite our efforts for studying. Maybe it shall remain that way, hidden just as it was for so many before times like now.

Really fun map commission: the argentinian province of Buenos Aires, in fantasy style
There's a lot of fun details the commissioner wanted to include:
A lobisón (werewolf-ish folk creature) near Tandil
The luz mala (will-o-the-wisp type of folk thing) on the road to Luján
A choguí (bird related folk tale) south of Trenque Lauquen
The Nahuelito (lake monster from the Patagonia) out of his element on the sea
Ceibo flowers (the national flower) on the winds rose
I also added the olive and bay leaves from the province's crest in the winds rose, and the Phrygian cap and the sun on the text at the top left
Working with white on black was excitinggggg and basing the work of real geography was fun (even if I fucked it up quite a bit)

Hi Oxi! Since we're on spooky season, what do you think scares Martín? (either supernatural or not 😉)
I actually hc Martín is quite a brave one! I’ll get to the supernatural later, but in general terms I think little fazes him. A big ego and an irrational amount of confidence make him stupidly brave :D I totally see him as the sort who laughs at horror movies and goes “That is so unrealistic lmfao, DUDE come on, that possessed bitch was right behind you, you deserved that eye stab” while shoving popcorn into his face as people get gruesomely massacred on screen.
I wouldn’t exactly call it fear, but I do hc the dark, the quiet and big storms make him anxious and restless. The first two are the main reason I hc he’s got insomnia, he has a bit of trouble laying still in the dark and quiet. The later I hc comes from his neglected childhood. Storms are quite a scary thing for children, and he had no one to rely on during those nights in which the rain and the thunder seemed to want to bring down his house. He grew out of the fear of storms when he came of age, but a little trauma remained in the form of mild anxiety.
There’s also this common hc around the fandom that he’s scared of heights, but that’s a joke that comes from having uh bad experiences with a certain neighbor.
As for the paranormal, he is a bit of a hypocrite. He claims that he doesn’t believe in any of that shit, that he is above superstition (he’s not). When it comes to his neighbours' folktale, he is rather disdainful and even disrespectful of them. However, when it comes to his own folktale, oh boy does he believe. La luz mala, el lobisón, duendes, el pombero, el nahuelito, mandinga, even aliens. He takes it all very seriously, and has a lot of respect for all these tales. This is the sort of shit you don't mess with.
