My hormones are all over the place today so inspired from this and this posts by draw-a-circle-thats-the-foxhole —

I had to search up some portraits for Matthew and hopefully, portraits for both Matthew & Alfred.

That's the face of a toddler who toddled his way from Québec to Nova Scotia. Alasdair commissions a painting right away and here's Matthew sulking and confused as to why he has to sit still for hours but at least he gets a father figure as a reward.

This is arguably a better portrait for Matthew. Composed and obedient. I'm not sure what those flowers are but Matthew holding flowers prophetically speaks of his identity—lilies, roses, tulips, and poppies.

The painting as a whole is more personal—something you hang in an office or library (which guardian is the question), than something you hang in the sala of your Château to show off your fur factory, settler colony, newly-acquired baby...

Obnoxious ruffles and tons of toys to compensate for the lack of quality time? Sounds like Francis Bonnefoy to me. Matthew is not staring properly as an act of mini rebellion for having to wear a stuffy, rigid gown (or perhaps something else caught his attention). It's not his fault he's not breeched yet. Also, he just wants a proper coat for winter, like this:

Now this is what Arthur commissions after France cedes Canada. Matthew is breeched and is thriving as a lover of the arts himself. He gets to do what he wants and be painted the way he wants. This portrait now hangs in the Kirkland museum in Arthur's manor.

It's early 1860s. Alasdair commisions this painting to celebrate Matthew's Dominion status. His Petit Bourdeur is now Adulte Boudeur (idk I don't speak French). Although he's not entirely independent yet, Matthew's dishevelled and exhausted now that he's learning to navigate politics on his own. But what causes him distress the most is Alfred's Civil War.

This is perfect. I want this commisioned on late 1760s or early 1770s before the American Revolution. Matthew on the viewer's left is talking about the pretty flowers or the moose he found while strolling. Alfred on the right just wants to read the latest publication of a philosopher-political-scientist but indulges his brother anyway.

By the 1890s, Alfred & Matthew will have more photos than paintings. That's all for now!

So, as far as we know in canon, baby America and Canada were left in North America whenever France and England had to return to Europe.

And some solve this by ignoring canon (as we do) and having Canada and America go with them, at least to some extent.

Canon itself is weird as It seems sometimes Nations can travel instantly and others it takes as much time as humans. So, ya know, canon be crazy and the aforementioned is as good a headcanon as any.

But I had a thought along the Nations as cryptids line...

What if America and Canada were left behind because they had to be? Because Nations are part of their land and people and when they're young enough, they need to stay near that land and people. The further a young Nation gets away, they start to sicken. And since nation and Nation are tied together, this goes both ways. Once the nation (or colony) is more firmly established, and the personification is therefore 'old enough ', they can travel freely. Less than that, it's dangerous.

Leaves great whump potential. For instance, if we go with a Vinland? Maybe Norway or whomever found a baby Vinland and thought to bring him back with him. Halfway across the ocean, Vinland starts to sicken. Not more than a few weeks after landing in Norway, he dies. The settlement withers soon after and Norway is heartbroken.

In any case, the New World is SO far from Europe, and completely unconnected. This isn't like a kid South Italy, with an established people and culture, including his own language, living next door in Spain's house. These are very young , fresh colonies, still puzzling out their identities, and there's a whole ocean between them and Europe. They're like vampires at this point - they need the soil of their birth to sustain them. ( A weak or wounded Nation might have this too, where they heal/revive faster on their own land. ) So, England and France and the others are very cautious about taking their Colonies with them too soon.

Obviously, no one need adopt this. I just thought it would be an interesting alternative headcanon.

Assorted FrUK/FACE Fam Headcanons

These are silly little thoughts I've had while drafting Migraines in Margaritaville, so these apply to the world of that AU (modern, human; FrUK parents raising NA bros in Massachusetts, US). Most of these involve food because I seem to think about them when I'm hungry???

• Francis and Arthur practice "one-parent-one-language" with the boys. Matthew took to French much easier than Alfred did, but both brothers managed to pick it up without much of a fuss. In elementary school the twins would use French to cheat on tests (they weren't allowed to sit next to each other after their schemes were discovered).

• Arthur set the grill on fire three times in one summer. Francis clearly doesn't learn from his mistakes and Arthur is too stubborn to let Francis do all of the work when it comes to preparing dinner.

• Follow up on the point above -- Arthur can prep vegetables and throw together food that doesn't require too much measuring or too many steps on the stovetop. He doesn't have the patience for most dishes and doesn't have a sense of what spices go well together/what is enough vs too much. Francis lets him help by chopping up vegetables and Arthur was usually the one to pack the boys' lunches. Sometimes they'd get leftover portions of whatever they had for dinner last night, but Arthur often defaulted to some sort of wrap with deli meat and assorted veggies/crackers for snack.

• Francis gives me similar vibes to those youtube moms who try to make homemade versions of popular American snacks. He may spend the weekdays at work in a kitchen, but on the weekends he's at home, still in the kitchen, trying to make homemade fruit leather and homemade cheese crackers for his sons.

• Arthur's the one more willing to let the boys get snacks from the store or take out. Francis is very much "we have McDonald's at home."

• Both Francis and Arthur would've been so excited to decorate the twins' nursery. They're both artistically inclined, be it in different ways. Arthur made blankets for both of them; Matthew is red and Alfred is blue. Francis paints floral designs on the furniture, in particular purple irises and both red and white roses.

• Because the twins were identical and because babies are kinda just blobs, they definitely accidentally mixed the twins up. The color coding might've come after the swap. They had a crisis about it. Francis "sacre bleu, we just gave two people permanent identity crises" Bonnefoy and Arthur "if we compare them to every picture we have of them we can figure it out" Kirkland. I'm imagining this happening before the twins have enough hair for their cowlicks to really form.

• It's tradition in the Kirkland-Bonnefoy household to have a box of Whitman's chocolates at every family party and Alfred is the reason why. One Christmas each twin got to pick out something special for the party and Alfred picked out the 22 piece Whitman sampler in the yellow box. They're not the best chocolates, but it became a tradition. Thankfully there's two layers in the box so Mattie and Al can have their own messenger boy pieces (the shaped chocolate that's the centerpiece of each layer).

• Neither Arthur or Francis have favor for one twin over the other. They both have their own activities they can do with Alfred and Matthew separately. Francis will cook and bake with Alfred and draw with Matthew. Arthur teaches Matthew to garden and watches old (by his son's standards) movies with Alfred.

• Francis is the parent the boys can come to no questions asked. Arthur isn't apathetic, but Francis is more inclined to give more thoughtful advice for relationships and general fuck-ups. He won't press on why or how something happened, but will help his sons figure out the best way to solve a problem.

• When Alfred and Mattie turned 10, Arthur wanted to teach them the importance of personal finance. He would give the boys $5 each week to spend on snacks at the grocery store (Arthur does the couponing and the shopping for the house). They were allowed to hold onto the money to use for later and could help with the couponing.

• Arthur drags the family out to Salem every Autumn. Sure, they live in Massachusetts and are well aware of how bad tourist season is, but he's fascinated with the city. Alfred initially went because he really liked this one New York style pizza shop in the Witch City Mall (how they got Francis to step foot in there, I don't know), but eventually grew interested in the witchy stuff Salem has to offer. Francis only puts up with it because the city has an art museum and weekly art fairs in the Fall. Matthew dreads their yearly trip. He loathes it. He'd rather tag along with Francis to the museum.

• Until the boys were old enough to start protesting, they had family Halloween costumes. Francis thought it was tacky, but saw the appeal when Arthur got the twins (still babies) all dressed up in lobster costumes.

In my experience the best way to console a brother is have em come over and or visit them and just exist in the same space until they are willing to communicate. If Alfred is in a mood, Matt will talk a lot. To himself if he has to since Alfred hates being in silence. Matt would just narrate everything he does and Alfred would just listen. It's not their usual dynamic but thats what works.

Matt: i was thinking we just watch an Adam sander movie until the foods gets here. Do you want something specific to eat? I was thinking kfc. We haven't had kfc in a while.

Alfred:

Matt: no you're right, let's just get pasta. I'll just go get my phone. Be back in 30 seconds, don't die.

Alfred: ok

Matt: no actually i will just use your phone. Do you still have the same lock? Oh nvm i got it! So you're getting the carbonara?

Alfred:

Matt: hmm no thats fine we can get the mac n cheese. Oh look they have a discount!

And If Matt is in a certain mood, Alfred is sitting beside his bro in total silence handing him water or soda or beer or wine every 10 or so minutes. Alfred is not usually silent but even he recognises that Matt needs companionship not noise at that point. It is very uncomfortable for him not talking but for Matt I believe he can manage.

Miscellaneous

Matthew isn’t this shy innocent caricature that he’s often made out to be. Sure, he’s a quiet guy but he’s not a complete pushover. He’s still a bit of a pushover though.

Matthew used to be a sad little boy who let anyone get away with absolutely anything, but something happened that changed him completely. Making him much more apathetic to everything that happens around him.

Matthew holds a deep buried resentment towards France whether he’s aware of it or not. He’s still bitter about France straight up abandoning him as a child.

Matthew comes off as less timid and more socially awkward. He’s apathetic to most situations to cope with his own deep rooted problems.

He could go for days, weeks, or even years without uttering a single word. Just passing by like some sort of ghost cursed to roam around this dreadful domain.

Matthew is completely isolated and that’s the way he likes it. At least that’s what he continues to tell himself. He lives out deep in the forest in a cabin away from civilization. His problems.

He’s honestly very kind deep down but he comes off very cold. Matthew knows that fact but if you get to know him you’ll know how kind and true he really is. He’d never turn down someone in need of help. Matthew’s lost track of the number of lost children and hikers he’s guided back to towns and civilization.

Matthew really enjoys listening to music. He finds it very relaxing and helps to think better.

He enjoys listening to The Beatles, Billy Joel, Sublime, The Rolling Stones, and The Mamas & the Papas.

His other major habit is smoking weed. Matthew likes to have everything all fade away even if it’s just for a few hours. It’s his only coping mechanism.

Besides that he loves to go hunting, fishing, and exploring around the wilderness. Much like his 2p nature is a huge part of his life and he’d go to great lengths to protect it.

These are probably gonna have some FACE family bias because I'm just a sucker for the whole family dynamic, especially in healthy settings :0

1.) I think both twins have good relationships with their fathers. I'm on the fence about favoritism (both for Mattie or Arthur for Alfred and Francis for Matthew). I think in certain stories it can work depending on the plot. I'm just a sucker for Arthur and Francis doing the best they can to support BOTH of their boys.

2.) Alfred is a better cook than Matthew, but Matthew has a more refined taste and values quality. Alfred is willing to try complicated recipes and will eat the final product regardless if it came out as intended. Matthew really only cares to cook simple meals but will ensure he has the highest quality ingredients.

3.) Both Al and Matt love the outdoors. They have a healthy rivalry when it comes to sports, especially fishing??? Let these boys loose on the Great Lakes and see what happens.

4.) Alfred starts arguments, but Matthew finishes them. I feel like of the two Alfred is more prone to lashing out and picking fights. Matthew gets the final word in -- he takes time to think before he speaks and is actually pretty good at constructing debates.

5.) In human AUs, Matthew and Alfred are both prone to troublemaking. The "terrible twos" was very true when it comes to the NA bros, especially since there's two of them. Growing up, they could rely on each other when problems arose and could count on each other to stall/get each other out of trouble with their dads. Matthew had the reputation of the "good child" among family friends or family members outside of their immediate family, but this was largely due to his quieter nature as a child. He's just as capable of scheming as his brother is.

A summary of why I prefer Matthew being the older NA brother:

1. I liked the chapter where Hima explained why Matthew is older, personally. I think its a good chapter with some really sweet interactions between Matthew and Arthur and some fun goofs, so that’s a part of canon I’ve accepted in my interpretation of the characters

2. On that note, I can’t imagine Alfred ever insisting on being older after that. I know people like the “protective older sibling vibes” but to me that’s just not a distinction Alfred would care about? I think he’s a protective brother, and doesn’t really give a shit about if he should be younger or older to do that. It wouldn’t change anything to him, and with my opinion that Matthew would insist on being the older one because he does care, Alfred would just say “alright, whatever you want bro ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “ and continue doing what he was doing.

3 & 4 (sorry it was hard to explain them separately). I think the family drama is juicier that way honestly, also Matthew just gives me big sibling energy. Just something about Matthew not living up to the expectations that usually come with being the oldest sibling, trying your hardest to be the best you can be in the eyes of someone else while watching your little brother completely reject that and somehow ending up with basically everything in even less time. I honestly don’t imagine Alfred was a well behaved kid, not to Arthur’s standards for behavior at least, so I think Matthew, who pretty much embodies the idea of a “well behaved child” would’ve become a stark contrast. The way I see it is a lot of Alfred’s behavior that he might’ve gotten away with before would’ve suddenly become a “why can’t you be more like your brother?” thing with Arthur. This would’ve bothered Alfred a lot while simultaneously giving Matthew the feeling of being a kind of role model, being the mature one, and being mature is a sign that he’s older of course, and because he’s older he’s the one in line for the throne of course. He will be, if not more successful in the long run, than at least he’ll be successful first. He’s doing the right things the right way, and Alfred is obviously not because he hasn’t grown up yet. Then Alfred has his revolution, and then he wins, and then he takes over the family inheritance that should’ve gone to Matthew by convention, if convention was something Alfred had ever cared about, and that part of Alfred’s character just doesn’t have the same impact to me if he’s the oldest the entire time

Alfred and Matthieu being identical but being like "we look nothing alike!!!'. Meanwhile France and England are rlly the only ones who can tell them apart all the time.

Spend 32% of their time messing with Oz and Zea cause 'we're your older brothers and it's our job :)'

They're biracial, in modern day it's not noticeable, but back in little European settlements they stuck out like sore thumbs. (more on that eventually)

They're equally dumb :\\ Matthieu is just better at controlling himself in public.

in modern day Alfred is closer to François, and Matthieu is closer to Edmund.

Unlike most European countries who know General Winter, Al and Matt neither like him nor are scared of him. They will however, stand outside and dare him to come down and fight them.

They both speak Scottish Gaelic.

They both play trumpet, sometimes they stand outside Englands house and play as loud as possible just to annoy him :)

They get in fights a lot actually, and not like petty ones like legitimately screaming at each other loud enough they've actually had the cops called on them during one.

Anyone else insults the other, in any way, that person will be ruined no questions asked.

François is their father biologically. They found out a few years ago when messing around, they haven't told François, or anyone for that matter.

They trade clothes all the time cause they're the same size. ('is that my new hoodie?' 'you mean our new hoodie')

Matthieu is ever so slightly taller, he likes to exaggerate those 2 centimeters as much as possible though.

Absolute horrid food taste, both of them. Literally will eat anything, five second rule is king.

They both joke Ireland is their mom, the joke extends to things like sending her mothers day flowers, and even calling her mom to annoy England sometimes.
