The Packs of Strelles: The Five Howls

The Five Howls are the Great Wolves who Howled the World into existence long ago.

The first and most honored wolf is Iren, the Howler of the Moon. Seeing the land and the creature roaming it, she howled into existence the moon. The light of the moon drew the attention of all living creatures. When the first dogs chose to howl under the moonlight and call themselves a “pack,” she showed her approval by letting the moon shine even brighter. It’s said that Iren leads dogs in their dreams during times of great trouble. When she’s painted, it’s as a completely black wolf with white eye sockets. Her official title is “Irusudallun” which means, “one who howls the moon.”

The second most honored wolf is Atella, Howler of the Sun. She looked upon the moon and created it’s counterpart, the sun. She encouraged prey to group together in herds making it easier for the dogs to maintain their food stores and keep their pups well fed. Her official title is Etllasudallun (one who howls the sun) and she’s portrayed as a golden wolf with white eyes sockets. It’s said that while Iren sleeps during the day, Atella watches over the dogs of the world.

The Howler of the Waters and the Howler of the Lands worked in tandem. Realizing the prey had little to eat, the wolf of the lands Canta (Nantasudallun) Howled into existence the flowers, trees and caves. Mywel (Yunesudallun) the wolf of the waters Howled into existence the rivers, lakes and sea to provide the creatures of the world something to drink.

Canta is often depicted as brown wolf with either yellow eye sockets or one yellow eye socket and the other with flowers and vines growing from it. Mywel is shows as a blue wolf with blue eye socket and have a pool of water surrounding her.The final of the Five Howls is Iseca, the god of the dead and howler of death.

Respectfully referred to as Sulasudallun. As dogs died, they loitered upon the earth some becoming twisted and horrid creatures that began to attack their former packmates. Iseca took matters into their own paws, howling a hole into the world. Iseca then guided the lost souls into the realm of the dead, having their fellow Howls create a place for deceased spirits to rest. And so by guarding over those who died, Iseca protects the world from the continuing expansion of dog-spirit based Abominations.

The Mongrel Republics - Name Conventions

Contrary to names within the Greenwood Empire or even the Sky Regencies, canine dominant societies in general offer more agency and self-determination when it comes to their names.

In particular, the Canine Republics have a system of placeholder names that are given to them before they become adults and choose their proper names for themselves as they join pack society.

Placeholder Pup Names

Pup names aren't meant to be kept long-term, more of a stand-in while a pup grows and comes into themselves. Most members of the republics find it deeply presumptuous and overbearing to place a name upon their pups - as if it's determining their fate. This paired with the original republics being in hard to thrive in places meant that adult members were more inclined to offer temporary names.

Pup names are primarily given out based on shallow, surface level traits shown by pups not long after they're born. Often these traits refer to their physical appearance - fur color, birth size - or behavior - such as vocality or liveliness. Given that these names aren't permanent, it's not uncommon for multiple pups within the republic to share the same pup-names.

Squeal, Yip, Yap, Whine, Whimper, Bark - talkative or noisy, lively with good vocals

Squirm, Wiggle, Tumble, Bounce - lively or very active, one that walks early

Growl, Whine, Huff - a pup with serious attitude or personality

Heavy, Lofty - a very large pup

Small, Little, Scrawny - a runt, the smallest in a litter, sometimes sickly

Blue, Silver, Brindle, Brown - all referring to the fur color of a pup

Adult-Dedication Names

As Rookies settle into their ranks, adjusting to becoming proper members of society permitted to vote and contribute, they will be welcomed officially as adults into the pack by their chosen names. These names are referred to in the republics as "dedication names" as the goal for every member of the republic should be to better themselves and hone a specific trait in honor of the Howls.

Members are recommended to be thinking about their names long before their choosing and to be very careful about the category they choose to brand upon themselves. When someone from the republics hears your name, you're also inadvertently telling them what traits you shall be striving to embody for the rest of your life. Setting too lofty a goal by choose too 'grand' a name can result in serious struggles for members to live up to their traits - and those who cannot meet standards essentially set for themselves are often viewed as untrustworthy and pathetic.

It is possible for a member to officially change their names within the republic albeit it's rare considering that such an act is synonymous with changing the entire direction of your life. Though it's not a mandate, it's generally expected that when you choose a new name, you are choosing from a different pool of names. This is because through whatever you've done to deem a name-change necessary, you've dishonored the Howl you were previously representing.

The only exception to this during situations of great uproar that fundamentally change who a creature is and thus, can make it impossible to fulfill the promise of their original name. In this form, taking a new name is said to be the most respectful thing you can do - stepping back and finding a 'true' self. Some may even hold symbolic death ceremonies for their old selves to truly solidify the change to being a new person.

Leadership Names

While general members of the republic often take on nouns that are related to their specific Howl, the alpha pair of each republic takes on a more direct name scheme. Leaders take on adjectives directly from the domains of their specific Howl, announcing to all what they will strive to be as a leader.

Leaders are thus held to supremely high standards regarding their ability to live up to their names. Major backlash can break out over the alpha pair even slightly deviating from the name they've chosen for themselves. It's not uncommon for some alphas to carefully monitor the way the pack is being led and approves of being led and choosing a trait falls most comfortably into these two worlds.

Adovusala: Complete Language Guide

The Canine Republics speak the Common Tongue like almost everyone else in the world since what’s generally referred to as The Great Connection. That said, the Sky Kingdoms didn’t just dedicate themselves to the rebuilding and relearning of their old tongue but also the tongues of the other groups around them. When this was discovered, the alphas and lunas of the packs found themselves deeply interested and worked alongside them to rebuild their tongue. 

Working from the few bits that remained in the form of honorifics, they were mostly successful in recreating the language from scratch.

This left Adovusala only spoken by the alphas and lunas of the packs for a decent while before the information was shared with the Howlers of the packs. It’s a great privilege for anyone to speak the tongue and to have the tongue spoken to.

In their language, the primary difference is when there’s only one of a thing or many things. -av is the modifier used for the commands given and is considered extremely rude and deeply overstepping to use on just anyone. Squad Captains and the ranks above them are the only ones allowed to use this mood on others - and even then, it’s mostly used explicitly when orders and commands are being laid out. 

As for the lower ranks;

Salacc inatuc - speak captain

They must use this request based marker - it shows that they respect their superior even as they give a command.

The most notable part of Adovusala is that instead of a simple system of pronouns like many other languages of strelles, Adovusala has a series of rank and age based honorifics that speakers adhere to when communicating with others. 

Though everyone has a place in the pack and all creatures have a place in the world, it’s generally understood that some positions are inherently more prestigious than others. Even when the language had first fallen pre-Connection, the system of honorifics stuck around due to the sheer stubborn and ingrained sense of respect that comes with the titles. 

To the relief of those already worried about trying to memorize all of these pronouns, the possessives are much simpler. Instead, they’re combined into whether the cat you’re referring to is of a higher or lower rank than you are;

As you can see rank in relation to themselves is the most important part of speaking Adovusala.

Adovusala has both definite and indefinite articles that are fairly straight forward. Thankfully for most who learn, the noun classes don’t alter the articles used.

Ge is the definite article and works like this;

The interesting bit about ‘ge’ however is that when the word it’s modifying begins with a vowel, the -e drops off and it gloms itself onto the beginning like so;
