Rewatching SU there are some episodes I'm a little more critical of. But boy lemme tell you the exact opposite happened with Last One Out of Beach City. I already liked this episode, but now? I think it's easily one of the best the show has to offer. Everyone reading this will know this but I'm gonna waffle anyway.

Okay so for one thing, this episode really has it all. Funny? Some of the best gags of the series. Emotional? Who of us doesn't well up even a little seeing Pearl get the girl. Visually beautiful? Is there any other way for this show to be! AND it gave us an episode specific outfit, which puts any episode in my good books.

Now at the time there was a lot of clamoring for Mystery Girl to return in a future (not Future) episode, which she never did. The thing is when you look at this episode, it's almost not about just Mystery Girl. Pearl doesn't want her just because she's a tall, curvy punk girl (which would be enough reason for me personally). Mystery Girl is metaphorical for the life that Pearl wants. She wants to be cool, to be a rebel again, to go outside her comfort zone.

In order to get those things she does have to push herself, and put herself in situations she wouldn't usually be comfortable with. But by doing, through her own efforts, she gets exactly those things. This is why it wouldn't make sense for Mystery Girl to return. Narratively she has a very specific purpose, which she fulfills by the end of this episode.

But hey, it's not just about our girl Pearl, Amethyst is there too! This is maybe my favorite Amethyst/Pearl episode of the show. It really perfectly displays their sister like relationship. I just love how Amethyst, despite her teasing, is genuinely routing for Pearl to succeed. It's so sweet seeing how excited she is when Pearl gets the number!

Alright, just a tiny bit more waffling. I think this episode is really beautifully contained. Overarching stories are great of course, but the majority of the pieces needed for this story to function are set up really well in just this episode. Nice job, writers!
