in praise of complexity
Tumblr media
it's way easier to write two types of parents of queer kids: the 100% accepting parents, and the in-your-face homophobic variety.
I've had my fingers crossed that My School President would opt for the third, more complicated kind. this show has been too nuanced and well-done for me to hop on any "Tinn's mom is probably the devil" bandwagon, anyway. in the end, they not only went the more complex route- they delivered in a big way.
when we first met Photjanee, she seemed like the stereotypical strict drama parent with sky-high expectations, thanks at least in part to her job.
we were slowly given insights into her and Tinn's relationship, and we got to see the affection and deep care they have for each other. it was heartwarming to watch, and establishing how loving their relationship was was essential to the conflict that came next.
in a little stroke of writing genius, most of Photjanee's struggle with Tinn and Gun's relationship- and with what that relationship meant for her son- were almost exclusively intended for our eyes only.
they gave us an unusually large amount of Photjanee-focused scenes (more than a few only had Tao in them), showcasing her growing suspicions and internal struggle. when she briefly interacted with someone else in these scenes- Tinn's dad, Gun's mom, Kajorn- the focus always remained on her and ended with her.
Tumblr media
the writers easily could've given Photjanee expository dialogue during these moments- i.e. "I'm just struggling so much with xyz"- but for the most part, they didn't. they mostly opted for "show, don't tell"- another unusual but stellar move, especially for GMMTV fare.
Tao Sarocha took us on Photjanee's journey with mainly facial expressions, tone of voice, pauses and where her gaze lingered. we didn't need to be told this was a mother who loved her child dearly, while simultaneously struggling with revelations about who he is. we could see it for ourselves.
Photjanee wants Tinn to be happy and free, but she's afraid for him. she doesn't want him to feel rejected, but she doesn't know how (at first) to reconcile herself to a future she never imagined for him.
Tumblr media
she didn't start as an open-arms ally, nor was she a bigot. she's an adoring, terrified mom adapting to change as best as she can. not a moment of her journey was rushed- these things can take time (sometimes a lot of it), and the writers gave that to her...to us.
Photjanee wasn't perfect- she was real (she sure as hell felt like it, anyway). and it made the beautiful, beautiful ending all the more meaningful.

my school president is just so refreshing.
i love that gun sacrificed his leadership position because he thought it was what was best for the band.
i love that none of his friends wanted him to and consistently begged for him to come back.
i love that tinn created opportunities for gun to play music and feel like an important part of something when he quit the band.
i love that tinn encouraged gun to go back to the band and help his friends instead of selfishly keeping gun to himself.
i love that sound willingly stepped down when gun came back to reclaim his leadership position.
i love that gun harbored no ill will toward sound and made sure he felt included by insisting he partake in their bbq pork ritual.
i love that gun brought some of that celebratory bbq pork back to tinn to say thank you, because the core of their relationship is mutual support and reciprocal acts of kindness.
i just feel like this whole saga would have taken several episodes to play out in most shows and would involve a whole lot more angst and problematic character behavior. thank you my school president for streamlining convoluted plots, prioritizing consistent character development, and planting green flags as far as the eye can see.

Riddle me this: When have queer stories managed to become popular with little kids in Asia before MSP did?
Tumblr media
This year I watched MSP cast promote the drama in schools and so many students ranging from small kids to high schoolers doing MSP dance challenges even months after MSP ended. It makes me ecstatic when I see them watching this drama, even becoming a fan! TinnGun made it seem so effortless to touch the hearts of Asian kids and teens in a way no queer drama has been able to do before.
MSP really changed my perception of what it will take for queer media to overthrow the hetero agenda in Asia someday. It made me realize we need more feel-good, family-friendly and goofy stories that appeal to everyone and make them laugh instead of convoluted or grandiose stories that lose the plot or those that specifically amplify queer struggles and minimise the joy of love.
That in the end, when real change starts in society, no matter how big or small and culminates with homophobia finally packing its bags & Asian families being won over - it won't be because of dramatic and "realistic" queer stories rife with suffering, grief or heartbreak that got voted best by the critics. It will be because of a simple and sweet love story like MSP, where one boy had a crush on another boy and did everything it takes to help him reach his dreams and found his own happiness in the process, a story that is vibrating with so much of queer positivity, joy and heart that it's impossible for anyone who watches it to not became its fan.
It makes my heart burst with joy that queer kids today are growing up with much better examples of queer love in front of them than our previous generations ever did. Imagine the impact this will have, the difference it will make in young queer Asian lives.
Gun told Tinn that the love songs we listen to in high school are the best love songs ever because they're the original soundtracks of our first love - To think there is a generation of kids right now who are listening to MSP soundtrack and falling in love to the same songs Tinn and Gun sang to each other and will remember MSP as their life's greatest love songs someday in the future - it boggles my mind and perhaps we won't grasp the full extent of what MSP did for its queer audience until many years have passed.
Nonetheless, I'll never stop singing MSP's praises because all they had was a newbie director, rookie actors & a banger soundtrack to do the impossible and make queer characters go mainstream in Asian schools and resonate with kids. We'll soon find out if we'll see TinnGun in college next year being sickeningly in love and serenading each other with an even gayer cuter cheesier soundtrack! (I hope so) Even if we don't, I'm excited for the impact MSP and GemFourth will have on queer romance genre down the line.

my school president meta: gun and sound parallels + learning through love
Tumblr media
in short: this post will discuss gun and sound's character development parallels through their relationships with their respective romantic partners, and how these similarities inform the closeness of their friendship!
under the cut because i have much to say <3
in the episode that sound is first introduced (ep 4), he and gun are set up as opposing forces. they’re competing for the leadership role of the band, and they have contrasting character flaws. what the other lacks, the other has an abundance of:
gun has no self-confidence but is earnest, kind, understanding, and friendly. even if the general public (aka classmates, teachers) look down on him for being a poor student, he has close friends who genuinely love him and believe in him.
sound is a successful actor and musician at a young age and therefore has an inflated ego. though he is talented and confident in himself and his skills, he lacks the social skills to build any meaningful relationships in his life, despite the love and attention he receives from fans and the public.
however, gun and sound's personal journeys to overcoming these flaws parallel each other closely, developing in large part through their respective relationships with tinn and win.
Tumblr media
tinn and win are the perfect partners to help gun and sound confront their flaws.
tinn is kind, attentive, and likes gun unconditionally. he recognizes all of the good qualities that gun misses about himself, his compliments are always natural and unpracticed—he just genuinely believes in gun’s talent and goodness. he is communicative but knows what he wants, which is good for gun whose uncertainty leads to him hurting himself more often than not.
Tumblr media
meanwhile win is combative and honest. sound’s celebrity status doesn’t affect win’s initial dislike of him or his loyalty to gun as their band leader. sound can’t be pretentious or falsely charming with him because win sees right through it. when sound tries to act superior, win pulls him back down to earth. win challenges sound to confront the unpolished qualities of himself that he hides from the public.
Tumblr media
through these relationships, both gun and sound learn to be open and vulnerable.
in ep 5, gun hides his disappointment in himself from his mom in fear of burdening her. he wants to keep up a strong appearance around her because she’s already stressed about her physical health. so, tinn intervenes and takes of care of gun in his emotionally vulnerable state, ultimately allowing gun to be honest with his mom. throughout the show, gun continuously opens up to tinn about his insecurities as a musician and the struggles he has been through with his family. as he shares more of those feelings with tinn, we also see gun seek and accept physical comfort from him as well.
Tumblr media
similarly in ep 8, sound hides his injury from his friends by secretly attending physical therapy and taking off his wrist brace whenever he’s around them. he knows the competition is stressing them out and he doesn’t want to add any additional burden, just like gun did for his mom. therefore, win offers to be his hand, supporting sound in his physically vulnerable state. in doing this, win also lessens the mental frustration and worry that sound tries to harbor all by himself. in the next episode, win continues to care for sound’s emotional state when he recognizes that sound is upset and checks in on him.
Tumblr media
these are obviously not the only times that tinn and win have offered physical and emotional support for their boys. it’s no coincidence that for both tinn and win, the love language they use to express their love is acts of service, which is perfect for two boys who aren’t used to asking for help or showing their weaknesses to others. tinn and win know they can’t wait for gun and sound to ask for help, because they never will. instead, they offer their help in any way they can while still respecting gun and sound’s boundaries, allowing them the space to open up little by little.
gun and sound also learn to value their personal relationships on the same level as their focus on music. in ep 7, we see how love changes both of their perspectives.
for gun, rather than seeing it as a distraction, he realizes that love can be something that inspires his music and motivates him to do better in the competition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for sound, he votes in favor of love, probably out of solidarity with yo due to his own budding feelings for win but also because he has come to genuinely care about his friends and sees how supporting each other contributes to their morale as a band.
Tumblr media
in both instances, gun and sound stop seeing love/friendship and music as isolated parts of their lives, and realize it’s okay to prioritize their own desires.
i believe these similarities in their character arcs are the reason gun and sound are shown to be close friends. they innately recognize their similarities with each other and gravitate together because they know there will always be a level of understanding between them. we can see this when sound tries to protect gun from the “plots” of the student council, when gun allows sound to miss practice for physical therapy and keeps his secret from the band, when sound gravitates towards gun when he’s avoiding win, and when gun reveals his own relationship to sound to offer support and advice to him.
Tumblr media
in conclusion, gun and sound began the show in a position that could have made them rivals with an antagonistic relationship that would only deepen each of their flaws. instead, their stories are unfolding in beautiful parallels, allowing them to grow closer as friends and bandmates.
*end of post, as of ep 9/12*

I keep thinking about the scene in My School President where Tinn and Gun share their best memories and how it was different in Our Skyy 2 and the implications of it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the original, this is the scene where Tinn and Gun start to open up to each other, telling each other their best memories, giving hints that Tinn has had a crush on Gun for a long time. But the next question on the list, what is their worst memory, is what really brings them together. Gun opens up about his dad's death: "When our loved ones are gone, they don't just go empty-handed."
In Our Skyy 2, they only show half the scene, only the question about their happiest memories. It's also interesting that Tinn is wearing a shirt that says "happier times are coming." In this scene they're both focusing on the happy memories, but also looking towards the future happiness they can have together. To be clear, I think this was a good choice, I don't think the fluffy Our Skyy AU needed that sort of grief to be explored in depth. But it does leave a lot of unanswered questions about what Gun's life is like in this universe.
Presumably Gun's dad is still dead in this universe, and Gun still had to and has to deal with that grief. What was it like for him to be raised by a single mom in this setting? We see that au!Gim cares a lot about Gun, but she is much more strict and uncompromising than in the original show. Gun would have grown up a lot more isolated, much like Tinn, but without his dad at home to balance his mom's sharpness like Tinn has. How would that have affected Gun's anxiety?
Gun also doesn't have the band behind him, though he does have Por. It might have been harder for him to make friends specifically because his mom was a teacher, and now is the principal. I think that could be part of why Gun seems a lot more subdued in this universe, without his full support network, without his musical outlet.
Anyway, thinking about this silly AU just made me sad but I think it shows how the little things that change when the characters are put in different circumstances, and how central the friends and family are to the feeling of love we get in My School President.

Imagine that you've always heard love was a certain thing, a certain way of feeling, a speed of heart... but your love is the way he looks at you and the way he let's himself be less then perfect and its a little smile and it's goosebumps on your skin and it's getting him his favorite seat in the van so he can see the scenery.
Your heart didn't beat faster, though.
Instead your words twisted and your stomach flipped and you smiled and you reached out and you want that to continue, you don't want to lose that.
And so you ask him... teach me how to make my heart beat faster not knowing that the butterflies in your stomach and the goosebumps on your skin said the same words in a different language.

Gun lowkey went THROUGH IT in MSP
I don't know if someone has clocked or listed the amount of sad things that happened to Gun but I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Despite Gun being consistently confident (editing to add: at least around his band mates), assertive, and chipper he actually went through a lot of downers that at least for me would've stopped me in my tracks.
1. Gun's (music loving) dad dying while Gun was doing a singing class test. He got the top score and while he's celebrating his mom calls him to say his dad got hit by a car and passed. He didn't even get the chance to call his dad to tell him the good news.
2. Sound comes in and Gun kicks himself out the group thinking he's a bad leader whose stopping the bands growth. This may seem small but since music is the only thing he kinda has, it has a big impact on him and his identity.
3. Getting rejected by that music scouter in episode 5. Dude was already going through it because he and some of his bandmates did not know what the future held for them especially since that counseling session ruined their spirits.
4. The doctors finding a tumor in his mom and her having to have surgery. He was legit in the hospital begging his mom to promise that she wont leave him behind *SOBS*
5. Guns mom undergoing surgery while he's performing at hot wave. The anxiety he had while performing was noticeable.
6. His band lost hot wave
7. His friend group kinda falls apart and he gets blamed for them losing hot wave (not gonna lie, some of what they said to each other was WILD)
8. His relationship with Tinn was outed
9. The dusty ass teacher/counselor being homophobic after finding out Gun's relationship with Tinn
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He had such a bright/determined spirit and he didn’t let things drain his joy completely.

Our Skyy 2 x My School President Ep 2 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Yesterday, we entered the Multiverse of Cuteness and returned to the world of My School President. Things are different this time around. Tinn and Tiwson are members of the Lion Band, Gun and Por are members of the student council, Gun's mom is the principal, Yo and Pat have switched places, and Sound and Win have switched places. The characters at their core feel the same, but their circumstances have adjusted the way the story has played out. Everything feels off, but in a way that seems to really appreciate who these people are. Their struggles will play out differently, but they're still inevitably drawn to each other.
I'm so glad we returned to the "I only see cuteness scene."
Welcome back, Kajorn. Glad you're still causing complications.
OMG. Everyone else is trying to keep Tinn upright and Tiwson is waving at Por.
Welcome to the team, Kajorn.
Tiwson and Por are thriving.
Oishii has been keeping the lights on in BL for so long.
Hey, we still got Tinn to give Gun a piggyback ride.
The music video is an ode to Aof's shows! I'm going to scream!
I love the questions bit and how Tinn leans into the potential romance of it immediately.
Oh no I really don't think they should be practicing rugby on concrete.
I want to see Satang and Winny fight people in a future show.
Love Por and Kajorn spooning. Unexpected, but welcome.
Was that a fucking air horn??
Tin is down bad in every universe. I like that it's Gun's hesitation that holds them back every time.
THE PINKIE TOUCH STILL BELONGS TO THE GAYS!!!
Let Me Tell You instrumental, my beloved.
Winny and Satang look good in this outing. They're not ready yet, but they have potential.
Oh, Gun. He broke the questions bit by being scared again.
I get the fear of rejection. Gun was such a loser in the original show that he'd already put a tough facade over it because he was a performer.
Love that Tiwson and Por get to have the strongest dynamic this time. Mark is so good, and Ford is playing with everything Mark gives him.
Oh no. Potjanee is sick in this one!
Oh, does she just have narcolepsy??
Potjanee remains nosy in every universe.
Sound gets to be Pat and Win gets to be Pran. I get it.
I'm going to bite through my non-existent retainer.
Oh, Gun. Gay boys and hoping they're braver in another universe. Thank you, Por, for reminding us to make the most of the time we have.
Look at Potjanee being gossipy! Love this for us! And now Hook is playing!
Love when the gays go running for each other and it's warranted.
The friend zone line is back!
Gemini and Fourth are very good at hugging each other.
Oh, Lays, let's make sure you get your ad in too. Gemini, a Known Crumb Crusher, was the correct choice.
Losing it over Tinn and Gun as Thun and Mes, and Tiwson and Por as Phupha and Tian.
I am so glad we got another music video.
A time skip!!
Final Verdict: 9, Recommended. This outing was an excellent examination of the nature of an AU and how it can highlight core aspects of characters in other settings. I really enjoyed that every character still felt correct even if we put them in a different position in the story. I liked the idea that they would all still choose each other. I love that you can't walk away from this without seeing how important Tinn's bravery and determination were critical to the way MSP unfolded, and how tenuous they are because of Gun's insecurities. This was really excellent.

I don’t think we talk enough about the way it took the Music Club literally one (1) episode to domesticate the feral cat that is Sound.
Like he comes into their group, a complete stranger, stirs up shit, tries to boot out and replace their leader, and no one holds any of it against him. There isn’t even a single line of dialogue where anyone mentions kicking Sound out of the club once Gun comes back. He just joins and they immediately take him in as one of theirs, just any other club/band member they’re ride or die for.
And what’s sweeter? The boys not once hesitating to hold onto Sound, despite his early behaviour, or the way Sound’s response to this unwavering acceptance and friendship is to soften up and fully integrate himself into the group? The way Sound listens to Gun, wears the chinchilla costumes, goes along with their ridiculous hijinks?
The Music Club loves and accepts Sound and Sound loves and accepts them and I just love them all so much—

You know, while watching My School President, it was one of the most pleasant surprises in a long long while. But one thing I truly did NOT expect was to develop such an attachment to Tinn.
I've loved watching these two boys fall in love, pine and help each other through the ups and downs of school, but I don't think I ever expected just HOW MUCH I would relate to Tinn. And this was legit 2 episodes in. (This post was written after ep8 and before ep9, for reference)
So following is a bit of a long-ish post on why Tinn is my favourite character in MSP and a bit on why his behaviour in the latest episode isn't that surprising to me and was, a while in the making, i feel.
At the risk of being overly personal and sappy on main, I would do SO much to just hug those two boys.
Also it's gonna be a bit of a long one, so strap in.
Spoilers till Ep 8 of My School President
Tinn, i was surprised to see had a very similar upbringing to mine. Like him, I am also an only child. Like him, I also have a strict mom, who is ALSO a teacher and a surgeon dad, who, despite not wanting to, was not able to be with me as much when I was younger because of his work, just like Tinn's dad, who is a writer.
Looking at the initial few episodes of MSP, it's pretty clear that both of Tinn's parents, while loving him so much, had to sometimes give up on time with tinn for their work. (It's something that i think is very common when both parents are working, or writing, as with Tinn's dad) And that Tinn loves his parents a lot.
Not to speculate on Tinn's upbringing, but based on my own experiences, and that scene around Tinn's birthday (spectacled nobi tinn is so CUTE, I just wanna punch his cheeks, my baby) it's a bit obvious that it's not the first time he's had to wait alone due to his mom and dad being busy. You have his mom being apologetic due to unexpectedly being called into a work dinner, her asking to celebrate with his dad, who himself is away at a book signing so, not exactly available himself (on his son's birthday too!).
You might call it a reach, but I don't know, it's something I feel isn't wrong.
If he was immature and spoiled, he might have been petulant and whining and complaining about how no one is wanting to celebrate HIS birthday with him. But he doesn't. He just accepts it. He smiles when his mom offers to let him come to work dinner, refusing with a smile so that his mom doesn't worry about him. He says (with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes) that he'll celebrate with his friend. Maybe this scene was to show that Tinn is mature, doesn't worry his parents and independent, maybe it was just a reason for Tinn to be sad before meeting Gun, i don't know man, I'm not the scriptwriter.
And inferring from the phone call with Tiwson, we can see that he IS sad that his parents can't celebrate with him. He KNOWS in his heart that it's ok, they love him, and sometimes life can just get in the way of things you want and you can't celebrate all your birthdays the way you want. But still, he's still a boy, and can't help but feel sad.
Maybe it's that resigned acceptance you see on his face and the call to Tiwson, where he fakes being ok since he doesn't want to inconvenience Tiw to come celebrate his birthday because he's already at home. Even though he's actually feeling a bit sad and lonely. And he knows that if he asked Tiwson, he would've come just because his friend asked him to. Just because he's feeling alone doesn't mean he should inconvenience people, that's what i think Tinn feels.
(I have a feeling the reason I've felt so attached to this scene at Gun's mom's shop is because I've BEEN in this situation way more times than I can count. And way to go when you write a whole ass ramble based on like just 1 minute of a drama)
When you see as you're growing up that your parents are super busy, and / or your parent(s) is very strict, especially with regards to academics (Tinn's mom is a very typical asian mum, in that regard), you grow up with the desire to keep your parents happy by becoming one less source of stress to them.
And being an only child can get lonely at times. Combine that with a strict mother, who is a bit too controlling over their child, and consistently expects the best from their child, you get yourself a kid who tries to show themselves as mature for their age and is a bit more independent than the parents would think. Also a pretty good liar and good at hiding their true emotions as well. Added if you're an introvert, you become a bit socially awkward and have a hard time making real friends.
(Personal experience talking here)
Plus from what I've seen so far about Tinn's parents, it's obvious that out of the two, it's Tinn's dad who is the more emotionally supportive one in the family. During that dinner scene in Ep 2, we can see that it's Tinn's dad who seems more open with his emotions, and Tinn is very cautious when talking about the music club (which his mother doesn't seem to like) to his mother. He mostly goes along with what his mother says, trying to not rock the boat as one does.
When you have that kind of strict parent(s) growing up, especially if you're a single child and have all of the focus of your parents, is that you become a bit reliant on your parent(s) making your decisions for you and you don't push boundaries and just go about life doing what's expected of you.
You become someone who constantly tries to please the strict parent, because you're afraid of them being disappointed in you. Because sometimes you're more scared of disappointing your parents than actually making them angry.
You more often than not, are seen as the 'golden child' who has ideal behaviour at school, and in studies and extra-curriculars. It's what expected of you and it's not like it's difficult to do so, why rock the boat unnecessarily?
And then when you start discovering that your own wishes and desires and priorities are different from your parent's (which more than often happens, because you are not your parents) and it's something that they might not like or even disapprove of.
That realisation makes you scared because you know you can't show what your true feelings and opinions on stuff because it's NOT what is expected of you. Then you double down on showing the perfect you that everyone likes (especially authority figures and teachers) and hide your imperfections.
That's where the people pleasing part of you comes into play. But inside you might be getting more frustrated and angry.
And then you get into your emo phase
Ahem.
Anyways.
Back to where you're wondering that what has this long winded tangent to do with Tinn.
Now, nobi-tinn, aka Tinn in first year, a bit of a resigned to being the perfect kid who never complains, meets Gun when he's all sad about his birthday.
Gun, who's all cute and handsome faced kid with a bright smile who just sets down a treat in front of you without you knowing who he is and why did he just do that.
Then he introduces himself and it's someone from your own class. And he's entranced by his cute little smile. And a bit gobsmacked as well because 'oh my he's cute' is running through that boy's head on loop.
Then his mother comes in and Gun is like oh, I'm just being friendly so that i can mooch off him and his work. That makes Tinn a little bit disappointed, because he thought maybe Gun wanted to be friends with him for real, but he just wants to be friends to 'borrow' stuff from you. Still he's pleased at atleast SOMEONE cares. Plus it helps that the boy IS cute so he's like, eh, whatever.
But then Gun goes up and is like if you're feeling lonely people, here's a song we can share. And you can see that Tinn is surprised, oh he's a singer?
Then this cute boy he just met busts out a song that RESONATES so much with him and he's like OH. OH HELL. I LIKE HIM. OH NOOOOOOO
Cut to Tinn's trying to get closer to him. But FAILING. MISERABLY. CONSTANTLY.
Poor guy even decide to clean up, change his look and try to confess at the Hot wave contest but only to be thwarted by a damn fight breaking out, which leads to Gun not hearing what was said.
Then both of them are in their final year of high school and Tinn, to his shock discovers that his mom DISAPPROVES of the music club (understandable, since they caused that huge fight, plus all those near fire and probable noise complaints), the place which Gun is an integral part of and where he thrives. And to his horror, wants to shut it down, which is like the last thing Tinn wants because then there's NO way Gun will even like you as a friend, much less have a crush on him. Poor guy, can't catch a break in his romantic life.
He's now stuck on how to help his crush without letting anyone know that he's helping him (because it's NOT what is expected of you)
Then Tiwson gives the idea that become the school president and prevent the club from shutting down. That way Gun might even be impressed by all that Tinn did to help him. Tinn does that. Becomes the School Council President. You're like ok, now the club is safe.
But then Tinn discovers that not only does your crush NOT remember him, but he actually HATES him.
We all know how it all then follows as we can see in the show. You have Tinn defying the school rules, manipulating folk music competitions, offering help anonymously online, ensuring the band actually has instruments to play on, giving him your own DAD'S PRIZED GUITAR (I have a feeling this might play a role in a future episode), lying to your own parents about what you're doing MULTIPLE TIMES and basically giving Gun as leniency as much as possible to help him save his club and actually win the hot wave so that you can actually confess.
All the while going all Elsa in front of him with conceal, don't feel mode because from what Tinn knows Gun hates him and won't accept his help if he knew. PLUS he's realising his mom's probable disapproval and disappointment in his actions. But Tinn has decided that it's time to stand up for what he wants to do and not what his parents want, for what seems like the first time in his life.
Awww Tinn is entering his rebellious phase, all so as to let Gun's dreams come true and let him be happy. Because don't forget, Tinn actually never ever pressurised Gun into liking him back or ever actually let him know just HOW much Tinn has done for him behind the scenes.
Then Tinn and Gun start becoming closer and closer and then they realise he actually reciprocates Tinn's feelings!!! YAY HALLELUJAH 🎉🎉🎉 But you two still can't date because of a stupid arbitrary rule that was put there because your previous club leader was a jealous man so they decide to shamelessly flirt with each other for now and stay somewhere in between mutual pining to secretly dating.
Meanwhile, adulthood and deciding on career is approaching and Tinn's mom decides that Tinn should be a doctor because it's a stable field. (which, personally, i think is bs. It's just the plain old insistence of wanting your kids to be a doctor, a lawyer ir an engineer that is drilled onto an asian parent's heads)
Tinn himself is very unclear about what to take in the future, understandably because this is something your parents can't decide for you. Plus while being with Gun and helping him, Tinn is gradually coming out of under his mother's thumb and letting himself feel what he wants to feel and have his own opinions. He is becoming a bit more rebellious and liking making decisions for himself.
So while Tinn doesn't necessarily want to become a doctor, he's not exactly protesting against it and is still unsure if he really wants to become one, and WHY. (I personally would love if Tinn did NOT become a doctor, or even if he does, atleast makes that choice with his own free will. Becoming a doctor requires a LOT of personal motivation, and being forced into being one is just damaging to one's mental health. This is speaking as someone who has just become a doctor herself a while back)
Then he realises that he wants to become a doctor to take care of his loved ones (admirable and a lofty goal tinn) after taking care of Gun's mom.
At the beginning of ep 8, we have Tinn talking to his mom to get permission for the club to stay over at nights for a week. Then his mom asks if he's started studying for an exam that is coming up in a month and he says he hasn't (I'm the same Tinn 😮‍💨🤜🏻🤛🏻)
But then we get Tinn standing up to his mom to get permission to stay overnight, with some crafty manipulation on his part to get her to agree. If you look carefully, his mom is confused about why Tinn is being this insistent about helping the music club. His mom has had that look before too, at the beginning of the show when he's asking to go in her place during the folk music festival.
And looking at it from Tinn's mom's perspective, Gun and his club are more of a nuisance than anything. And she probably is wary that they might drag Tinn to the wrong path. We as viewers know that is profoundly incorrect, but his mom doesn't.
And then we have Tinn and Gun hiding from his mom in the pool and then using the lousiest excuse I've EVER heard (Tinn you weren't even trying my boy). Can someone please tell me that does it actually abruptly rain out of nowhere in Thailand and then it stops just as abruptly??
Like the only reason Tinn's mom seemed to buy that excuse is that she hasn't caught him lying to her before. Also why do I have a feeling that she really some bias against the band kids? Because why only offer the towel to Tinn when both Tinn AND GUN are soaked????
Then we find out that Tinn's mom has arranged for him to meet with a doctor from the college Tinn might be applying for later who's having a seminar in his school. This is in order to have Tinn give a favorable impression to the doctor.
Contrary to what many were thinking, it's JUST an introduction, not an actual interview or anything. It's kind of like a mom showing off her kid to another so as to improve Tinn's chances of getting in.
One thing I noticed about Tinn while he was being told this was just how uncomfortable he looked. I'm still not clear myself whether it was because he was gonna miss being able to watch Gun perform openly (something he's been wanting to for YEARS at this point) or that he was benefiting from being the principal's son and getting this advantage over his peers who were as interested as him in that field. I personally like to believe it's a mixture of the two, with the former being a larger reason than the latter.
Moving on to the late night school ground heart to heart, you can see just how affected Tinn was by Gun's confession of gaining strength from performing in front of the people he loves. Especially since he knew that he couldn't actually go and watch him. We as audience and Gun could tell that just how sad he was at not being able to attend.
Then we had the wonderful piece of Gun deciding that it was FINE and both of them deserved to go after their dreams and encouraged Tinn to work hard towards his dreams, like Tinn encouraged Gun to do.
Now what follows is a bit of speculation, but not unnecessarily untrue, i think.
But what Gun doesn't know that the only reason Tinn even WANTS to become a doctor on the first place is in some way to take care of Gun and his own parents and Gun's mom.
It isn't Tinn's dream to be a doctor, it is his mom's. It's just something that he's going along with because he doesn't exactly hate the thought of being a doctor. Tinn's dream, atleast for the moment is to be at Gun's side, help HIM achieve his dream of winning the hot wave and be his boyfriend, in that order.
On that note, if Tinn you ever want to become a doctor, I think being a pediatrician would suit you a lot (as suggested by my lovely friend @sarahandtheninjas and i agree with them)
While, he might have gotten a good reason why to want to pursue medicine, his priority is still Gun and passing his school.
And his priority at that moment is watching Gun perform because he wants to provide Gun that support during such an important time of his life. Tinn has enough confidence in himself that he knows he can get in medical school by himself without any prior introductions from his mother. (I don't know how exactly do you even get in medical school in Thailand so if anyone could provide some information, that would be highly appreciated!!)
Plus i believe that Tinn is beginning to chafe from his mother's constant hovering. It comes from a place of love, but i think it would feel very annoying when you're a teen. Like when they both were rehearsing answers to give to the doctor, (which by the way were super generic and expected answers, exactly the ones they would look for, but still boring) you could see that Tinn could NOT CARE LESS about that *stupid* doctor and just wants to see Gun perform.
So in a fit of extreme bravery (seriously, it takes guts to talk back to your mom, especially if she's as strict with Tinn as I think she might be) he says sorry to mom and runs away to the Hot Wave.
Then that absolutely LOVELY conversation between TinnGun follows where Tinn reveals that that introduction wasn't actually that necessary and what's the use of becoming a doctor of he can't take care of the ones he loves.
Also Tinn, becoming a doctor means accepting that you might not being able to spend a lot of time with your family and loved ones, especially if you go into something like emergency medicine or surgery or ob-gyn or even medicine, especially during your specialisation years. I SHOULD KNOW, I'm not only a child of a surgeon, but a doctor in my own right.
(Also, dropping the love word so early Tinn???? That's pretty gosh darn brave of you my boy, but seriously Tinn, do not decide to become a doctor on a whim)
All of those actually reading till this point I love you all so much 😘😘
And after all of that, what I am personally looking forward to in the future episodes is how exactly does Tinn's late stage rebellion play out, because I have a feeling that his mom might be shaping up to be the final boss.
And thanks a LOT for reading
(I might edit this post later after all the episodes are over to add more thoughts and add some screenshots, maybe)

rewatching my school president with the knowledge that homophobia does in fact exist within the universe of the series is such a crazy experience because it adds an extra layer of meaning and interpretation to so many lines and moments that we often either overlooked or explained away during the first watch-through.
first off: the music club's rule about not having lovers as a kind-of-sort-of metaphor for society not being accepting of LGBTQ+ couples (i.e., main obstacle in tinn and gun's relationship)
the fact that tiwson knows about tinn's massive crush on gun before the beginning of the series (meaning tinn trusted tiw enough to tell him)
gun's stunned silence when tinn admits he's hitting on him during the pool scene and the kind of scared look on gun's face when he gets flustered after looking into tinn's eyes in episode 3
tinn pointedly asking gun "are you okay with that?" after he indirectly confesses his feelings by the pool in episode 5/6
gun saying "you can't control something like this, can you?" after tinn's previously mentioned confession of feelings at the beginning of episode 6
gun's anxiety about what it means to accept that tinn likes him and he likes tinn back (e.g., "has it ever occurred to you that there are things you want to ask, but you're too afraid to?")
the look of trepidation on sound's face after filming the medal kiss scene with win in episode 6 and realizing he has Feelings
everyone in chinzhilla being on board with filming a bl version of the 'just being friendly' music video (because they're all gay or allies lmao)
tinn interpreting gun's mention of the dating rule after his implied love confession as rejection + gun clarifying that "it doesn't mean he feels bad about it" in episode 6 (music club dating ban as a metaphor for homophobia again)
tinn and gun having to hide the fact that they are seeing each other while at the aquarium with yo and nook, who can openly date (ostensibly because of the music club dating ban, which oddly enough doesn't prevent yo from pursuing nook - there's that music club dating ban metaphor again)
gun repeatedly voicing his concern that it would be easier for tinn if he decided to hit on someone else (e.g., a girl)
tinn's out-of-control gay fantasies as a possible coping mechanism for the fact that he can't be open about his feelings with his family or anyone at school (besides tiw and gun)
yak telling sound he has to accept "what he's really into" in order to write a good love song (and sound clearly glancing at win afterwards)
gun telling tinn "be patient. when i win hot wave, everything will get better. at least with our friends" when they hide from tinn's mom outside of tinn's house at the beginning of episode 10 (music club dating ban metaphor again + hints at concern that tinn's mom may not accept their relationship)
tinn feeling comfortable enough with gun's mom to tell her about his crush on gun while keeping it a secret from his own mom
tinn's mom not knowing tinn could sing as an allusion for how she doesn't know about other aspects of tinn's true self (i.e., his sexuality) either
gun telling tinn that after hot wave, "whatever shitty rules there are" can't stop them (foreshadowing the hostile reaction they get to their relationship in episode 12)
there's probably more but these are the ones i can think of off the top of my head. many of these comments/moments could make sense in the context of a universe without homophobia (i.e., due to general shyness/anxiety about relationships, the music club's dating ban, etc.), but it's neat to interpret them through the lens of heteronormativity/homophobia too.
it's interesting to me that we as a fandom didn't really pick up on the fact that there was homophobia in the universe of the series as it was airing despite all these "signs." it's almost like the show was leading us to ignore or explain them away, just like many of the characters do before they're forced to confront homophobia in episode 12.

My thoughts on ep 11 and ep 12 preview:
Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely here for the ride P'Au and MSP team are taking us on. I appreciate the developments of ep 11 and I adore chinzhilla's friendship. I'm also relieved the ep 11 curse did not unimaginatively separate tinngun and their relationship is stronger than ever. But I'm trying to understand how these events fit into the overarching romantic vision of the show, and perhaps I will feel differently after we've watched ep 12
I was somewhat caught off guard when chinzhilla lost hot wave. I was so sure they would win because the show has already told us about the outcome multiple times: That love is not a dream's greatest enemy but the very essence that fuels it, and dreams are also meaningless without sharing it with the person you love. Love makes Gun sing love songs better and hence love will be what eventually helps him win hot wave with the song he wrote about the people he loves. Because Tinn has been by his side since day one as his most ardent believer and supporter. Shouldn't Gun watch his dream come true with Tinn by his side then? Did that outcome not make the most sense narratively speaking? If this was a more serious show, I would've entertained the possibility they may not win cuz that's quite an idealistic and clichéd storyline. But MSP has been the most perfect romcom to date and there's no other show this would've worked on, so I'm sorry if I was wrong to hope
Through 10 episodes, MSP has built a light-hearted but realistic universe which had no traces of homophobia so the ep 12 preview (which maybe lying) is also confusing me. Since the first episode we've been watching Tinn bend over backwards to facilitate Gun's dream and I always thought, "I'm so glad this is a romantic comedy cuz Tinn would be getting into sooo much trouble for using his position as the school president to help his boyfriend" - because I didn't think for one second this was the kind of a show that would really land Tinn in trouble 😩😩
I do still believe everything that's to come in ep 12 will bring better answers and give them the happy ending they deserve. But I'm a little sad and trying to understand why it seems like the story has gone back on some key points it established before, and if the story is heading in a more serious direction than it set itself up as. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this and if y'all can share your views on this, I would really appreciate it

Conflict and Empathy in My School President and Kieta Hatsukoi
I have been thinking about how My School President and Kieta Hatsukoi (My Love Mix-Up!) utilize structure and pacing to create a very honest depiction of a high school experience. I've said before that I think My School President is the quintessential high school show for me in the way that it captures how it feels to be a teen, to be in a relationship for the first time, the heightened emotions in both romance and friendship, but also shows this in such a caring and loving way. Kieta Hatsukoi does a lot of very similar things, focusing on friendships and empathy and trying to communicate (despite all the misunderstandings), and it rings true in the same way for me. I think this comes down to how both shows are structurally formulated and how they depict conflict.
@khaothanawat (i) and @ranchthoughts (ii) (iii) (iv) have written excellent posts on the topic of My School President's use of narrative pacing and specifically the subversion of audience expectations. For example, it has big reveals early on, such as Tinn's secret crush. Plot points that might be episode-long arcs, or be the whole premise of the series, are resolved quickly, often within the episode.
Kieta Hatsukoi speeds through narrative conflicts as well (spoilers for the first 3 episodes). Aoki has a crush on Hashimoto. He learns Hashimoto has a crush on Ida. But wait! Now Ida thinks Aoki has a crush on him! Oh, but now Aoki really is falling for Ida, and worried about hurting Hashimoto because of it. But Hashimoto doesn't actually like Ida, she likes Aida, it was a whole misunderstanding. Ida is starting to maybe like Aoki back. But now Ida thinks Aoki does not have a crush on him, when Aoki most definitely does. Aoki goes through approximately 3 existential crises per episode. In Kieta Hatsukoi, the love truly keeps getting mixed-up!
This plot structure is part of why these two shows are some of my favorite high school shows. It feels very true (though exaggerated) to the teen experience to have so many things happening that you're trying to decipher, building on top of each other, coalescing in terrifying and beautiful ways. These are obviously not the only shows to utilize this structure but I think it works especially well in a show about high school where so often little things can feel unimaginably huge and then get completely pushed out of the way as new things emerge or they turn out to be less catastrophic than they first appeared. In the wise words of Riverdale, it's about the epic highs and lows of high school football.
What I love most about these two shows and how they use this rapid-fire pacing is the way they don't trivialize the characters' emotions or experiences. Yes, there is humor that comes specifically from the twists in the narrative and the range of teen emotions and miscommunication. But we're not laughing at the characters; instead we are swept up in the tidal wave with them, in part because it's so easy to empathize with both ensembles, and because we are accustomed to the traditional narrative pacing styles that these shows subvert and play with. Just because the characters' emotions shift—because they come to new revelations, because they communicate and forgive one another—doesn't invalidate their prior feelings.
Tumblr media
The scene that really stands out to me in My School President is in episode 11 when the Chinzhillas have their big fight on the way to redeem their wishes. This is the real conflict of the episode 11 of doom that we are primed to expect from other shows. Instead of a breakup, we are faced with the potential dissolution of the friend group. This scene hurts, showing the culmination of the tension throughout the episode and the band's disappointment over losing Hot Wave. It seems that the Chinzhillas might be unable to reconcile after what was said. But this is where My School President subverts expectations and doesn't prolong the conflict longer than necessary. They all talk it through, communicating what they're feeling, and apologize.
Both shows introduce and resolve conflicts in different ways. In My School President, many conflicts that arise are initially external: for example, the club is going to be cancelled because of the new school rules, Sound joins the band and takes over as leader, Gun's mom is sick but Gun doesn't know, the band loses the Hot Wave competition, and another student outs Tinn and Gun. The story is then about how the characters respond to the internal conflicts that arise due to these external events, rather than fixing the external source of conflict. The characters deal with Gun not feeling capable of leading the band after Sound's introduction; Gun and Tinn need to figure out how they feel about Tinn keeping Gun's mom's health a secret; and the band needs to decide how they can forgive themselves and each other after such a huge disappointment.
The characters don't have the power to do much about the root cause of these problems. They can't cure Gun's mom, they can't go back in time and stop the student from outing them, and they can't win Hot Wave. This is what the argument in episode 11 is about, realizing that the loss is not on any one of their individual shoulders, and so the only thing they can do is figure out how to move forward together. What the characters learn, which allows the show to avoid drawn-out conflict, is the ability to communicate healthily with each other, to be kind to one another, to show empathy and respect. The rest is outside of their control.
In Kieta Hatsukoi, conflict is often not directly resolved but instead subsumed by new conflicts and new (mis)understandings. Aoki's initial problem (that Ida thinks Aoki has a crush on him) is overtaken by the new one (that he actually does like Ida but Ida now thinks he doesn't). The characters keep learning new things about themselves and each other that change everything.
The characters in Kieta Hatsukoi struggle to understand each other and they struggle to tell each other the truth about their feelings. But they're trying so hard to be kind to one another. The friends are always striving above almost all else to be careful with one another's feelings. Aoki keeps Hashimoto's crush a secret to protect her; Hashimoto is distraught to learn of Aoki's past crush on her because she has inadvertently hurt him; Ida is so deliberate in thinking through his own feelings in order to not hurt Aoki's. They're trying, even when they don't get it right.
At the core of both these shows is empathy. The characters strive to be kind, to communicate, to understand one another. This is not often easy, especially with the amount of stuff they are all bombarded with—new situations and experiences to grapple with, transforming feelings that they don't always understand. But this is all part of growing up. My School President and Kieta Hatsukoi are both able to utilize their narrative pacing in order to put forward a story so full of warmth and love.

Hello,
Hope you're well.
I had a question regarding My School President.
From what I know, Gun and Tinn said can't date until Gun wins Hot Wave. They can't have lovers. So at what point, did their relationship changed? Because in earlier episodes they said can't have lovers but can have a "talking stage". However in ep 9 Gun invited Tinn to the trip saying he wants to listens to the sound of waves with his "boyfriend". And he confessed to Sound that he is "seeing" Tinn. When did they become a couple? I feel like I skipped some chapters
I think that's because it was a natural progression that didn't have a big moment.
Tinn is letting Gun guide how they refer to each other. Gun knows that Tinn loves him and wants to date him and wants to be with him. There's no question. It's entirely up to Gun how he's comfortable referring to them.
So he gets to use the word boyfriend and to say they're going out because, frankly, they are. They have been. They might not have been calling it that, but that was out of respect for Gun's wishes... not Tinn's.
So I think they successfully did show that there was a talking stage, that they were just flirting, that Gun wasn't ready... but the instant he was, Tinn was on the same page as him without hesitation and without questions, without any need to formalize.
Because they are exactly as formal as Gun wants them to be and Tinn won't push him because he loves him and he just wants him to be happy and to love him as he is ready. He knows how much pressure Tinn puts on himself and he refuses to add to that pressure.
There wasn't chapter for it because they're been dating this whole time, it's just a matter of semantics.

My School President Ep 12 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Most of the week I was actually ready to finish this show and begin anticipating its impacts. Now I just know I'm going to miss these losers.
Last week, Chinzhilla lost Hot Wave, and we spent the episode watching them grapple with yet another defeat: this time on the biggest stage yet. They decided to go back to the beach to honor their wishes, and we watched the group tear apart at the seams. Still, Yak came through with some perspective, Tiwson with some food, and Tinn with the final performance for the band at prom. Tinn's mom is aware of his relationship with Gun, but is trying to be a good mom and keep her anxieties to herself and her husband.
Oh right, we're picking up with Tinn's mom asking Tinn directly about Gun.
Not them cutting between both moms! Don't make me compare them!
Fine, let's compare. Tinn and Potjanee have this huge wall between them in their relationship that seems founded entirely on her expectations of Tinn. It's hard for well-behaved children to be open with their parents when they've thrived so long on praise for meeting those expectations. On the other hand, Gun and Gim have struggled and lost a lot together, and so much of their relationship is about Gim not letting Gun give up on his dreams. So, of course Gun can tell his mom about Tinn and it mostly be a formality and yet another excuse for them to hug and reassure each other.
I do feel for Potjanee. Seeing your son scared because you might ask about the person he cares about can't feel good, and there's no obvious way of fixing it at this point. However you've raised him has convinced him that he can't trust you with this. That's actually just so sad.
I get these two agreeing to continue as they are. The reality that some of your families won't accept you is unfortunately a norm for many viewers.
This Canon ad is cute, but anyone on the school network can access this printer???
The boyfriend era is fun.
Tiwson said you will absolutely give him his flowers.
The homophobia creeping at the edges is an unfortunate reminder of my own adolescence. I do like that the show is highlighting that it impacts queer girls too.
Irritated, jealous Gun is so demanding.
A tandem bike! My goodness.
Oh, I like them sliding in cute boyfriend kisses first. That's such a good choice, because they've actually been together for a while.
Phat, we're asking about juniors now??? I've been asking about this for like six episodes!
I really think we as a global society should stop taking pictures and videos of people on the streets and using them as content. What sucks so much about this is that Gun is finally willing to be openly affectionate with Tinn. He decides to kiss his boyfriend on their date, and now someone is going to take that joy from them. It's not like they were hooking up in the park, and yet here we are.
I love Chinzhilla with my whole heart.
Kajorn saying he quits if they're not on the same page, and Gun coming behind to say he already used the same lie Tiwson suggested...but Tinn doesn't want to lie anymore....set to a sad piano version of Let Me Tell You...oof.
Not Gun using Tinn's nose suggestion to keep from crying in the rain.
Best Boy Tinn is not gonna let this pull them apart. Interesting that we just saw Fourth and Gemini hug tightly in Moonlight Chicken. Gemini places arm in a similar way here, too.
I'm installing an EMP on every queer so that we can demolish people's phones when they record us.
Very much enjoying Sound and Win in the finale. I will miss all of Chinzhilla. I hope they appear in the Our Skyy 2 episode.
See, and this is why I never turned on Potjanee. I know some of y'all feel some kinda way about her, but here we are. These boys have not even been out for 24 hours and the shit is already piling. She asks, "Why aren't other people as kind as the characters in the series we watched?" Good question, ma'am. Our lives are not fictional, and we face the horrors daily. It's the dad saying, "We can't force other people, honey. It's down to us whether we're as kind to our son as those in the series." I see they learned Uncle Tong's lesson. Now go stand beside your son.
Not Tinn whispering the name order thing to Gun and Gun immediately asserting that his name is first!!
Having adults you trust being casually homophobic is so damaging.
Gemini has a fantastic eye roll. We saw it on episode 5 of Moonlight Chicken, too.
KAJORN!!!! COME THROUGH, BABY BOY! HIT AGAIN! HIT HIM FOR ME, TOO!!
What did I say?? Don't you ever lay hands on someone else's child! I SEE YOU, POTJANEE! YOU ARE INVITED TO BRUNCH!!
And this is how you make it right with your son. You show him he can trust you by standing in front of those who would make him feel lesser.
Okay, I like the outfits Chinzhilla picked!
They're playing You Got Ma Back. 😭 I love them so much.
Now they're doing Come Closer! I do love Ford's voice.
Oh I love Rock & Star as a song from Gun to Tinn.
I love getting Tinn back on stage again.
POTJANEE!!!!
I'm gonna need Gun to stop looking at Tinn's lips!
I'm so glad Gun got into a program he wanted. I can't take any more losses for this boy.
And here I was living in a world without Texas Chicken ads.
Oh, Sound and Win. I'm going to miss your dynamic. Look at Winny and Satang giving two solid kisses.
Poor Phat. Yo dropped him so fast.
Tinn and Gun are so cheesy. I love them.
Not me crying over Chinzhilla again!
I like the notes for their juniors and not showing any actors. It would lead to the wrong kind of speculation, and this lets GMMTV pick up this setting again any way they want.
Not @respectthepetty getting into my head about Gun's blue socks and Tinn's red shirt when he formally meets Tinn's parents.
I love Tinn's dad. He's embarrassing in only the way a loving father could be. He's also constantly rooting for Tinn.
We get 'eating' jokes and a sweet kiss in bed to close out the series. I'm good.
And they verse? We love to see it.
Wow. Just amazing. I loved this show.
Final Verdict: 10, Highly Recommended. I've been in queer media since I was a teen almost 20 years ago. I have experienced a lot of wins and losses as a viewer of BL. In so many ways this show healed any gripes I had with early productions like Lovesick, Make It Right, etc. This show is damn-near perfect. It's so heartwarming. I loved all of this. It's a show about a bunch of losers trying to help each other, and there's nothing more beautiful than that. We now have my new default recommendation for people curious about BL after coming off something sweet in the West.
