SUMMARY:: against your better judgement, you go to megumi's apartment alone, and he opens up to you.

The moment replays again in your head.

“Let me show you what a real good high feels like sometime.”

“…. What?” you muttered, dumbfounded. “What is that supposed to mean?” You cock your head at him curiously.

Megumi stared at you blankly, raising an eyebrow. “Are you trying to be cute right now?” he grumbles. You shake your head frantically.

“N-No, I just don’t understand—“

He interrupted you with an exasperated sigh, “My place, tomorrow. Be ready by 6:30. Got it?”

“S-Sure?”

The memory makes you stuff your face back into your pillow. What kind of an answer even was that? You sit back up, checking the time to see it’s early in the morning, and Maki still hasn’t returned yet. Out of excitement, your first instinct is to text Maki and Nobara, and tell them about it, but on second thought, it’s probably not too great of an idea, and you remember the last thing Megumi said to you before you got out of the car.

“Just don’t tell the others ‘bout it, kay?

You toss the covers off yourself, stomping as you get up to go to the bathroom. You can’t help but worry about a possible ulterior motive. I mean, everything about him tells you to run away. He smokes, has a beat up car, dirty apartment, and Nobara clearly doesn’t approve of you going after him. Hell, his best friend Yuji is even in a fraternity, but you owe him, and he offered a way to repay him. You ponder it over as you aggressively splash your face with cold water.

Suddenly, your front door opens, and Maki peeks into your shared bathroom. “There you are. You feeling alright?” she asks, her brows knitting with concern.

“Yeah, I think I just had too much last night.” you mutter, drying off your face with a towel.

“It happens. Happened to ‘Gumi once too, back when we were sophomores.” She says with a chuckle, grabbing her toothbrush from the mirror compartment. You flinch from the sound of something toppling over from outside the bathroom.

“Who’s here?”

“Just Yuji and Nobara. Megumi kicked us out cause he has a shift at the campus library. Last time we were left alone at his apartment, Yuji ransacked his fridge.”

You chuckle lightly, “Makes sense.”

Every little detail you find out about Megumi only makes your curiosity pique. You consider heading to the library just to catch a glimpse of him, but then you realize you’re also starting to sound like a stalker. Your phone buzzes in the back of your pocket and you whip it out haphazardly.

“Got a favorite kind of food?”

A giddy smile spreads across your cheeks as you read it.

“sour gummy worms!!! :)” you type back.

You receive another notification, “Okay”

You roll your eyes. Maybe he’s just not fond of texting..

“We’re probably going to head to the library to get some studying out of the way, you wanna come?” Maki asks, toothbrush still hanging from her mouth as she pours herself some mouthwash.

“No thanks. I have a class in twenty minutes.” You say while you slip on a pair of sneakers. As much as you’d like to go give him a visit, it would probably spoil your excitement for later.

Maki nudges you in the rib, “Seems like Megumi has taken a liking to you. That doesn’t happen often.”

Your cheeks fill with heat, “You really think so?” you say hesitantly, chewing on your bottom lip.

Your dorm mate shrugs, “I mean, yeah. It’s weird though. I never thought that you’d be his type.”

You raise your brow confusedly, “.. What is that supposed to mean?” you ask.

Maki sets a reassuring hand on your shoulder. “Don’t take this the wrong way..” she says, “But.. you’re sort of a goody-two-shoes.”

Your smile melts into a frown, “Is that.. a bad thing?” you ask awkwardly.

She sighs deeply, “Forget about it. Just be careful with him. He’s not exactly the.. committal type.” She pats you lightly on the back before leaving you in the bathroom with your thoughts.

Your mouth sets in a hard line, and for a second, you’re starting to regret your decision.

Of course, you spent extra time getting ready today to look as good as possible. Two hours, in fact. Today you chose to wear a cute backless top, and shorts, regardless of the freezing weather. You snatch your purse and check the time. “Only 6:25..” you mutter. “Might as well.” You head outside to wait, but you spot a familiar, beat up car in the corner of the parking lot, and an even more familiar face leaning against it.

“How long have you been waiting here?” you ask sweetly, Megumi’s gaze rising from his phone.

He shrugs, “Just got here, actually.” he says, holding the car door open for you before you slip inside. He sits down beside you in the drivers seat, grabbing a bag of sour gummy worms out from the console. Your eyes light up as he drops it in your lap.

“Oh! Thank you.” You say with a wide smile as you tear open the bag, stuffing a few into your mouth.

He nods, “Save some for later. You’re probably gonna be hungry.” You nod back, smiling all giddy like a happy child as you stuff your face with sour gummy worms.

“Want one?” you ask, muffled from your cheeks stuffed with gummy worms. He waves you off, and you put on an exaggerated frown.

His gaze flickers from you back to the road, “Fine. I’ll take one.” Megumi mutters, rolling his eyes. You gladly hand him one and he pops it into his mouth. His face contorts, “Way too sweet.” he comments, shaking his head.

“I think somethings wrong with your tastebuds.” you say with a small grin, crossing your legs.

“I think somethings wrong with you.” he says nonchalantly.

You pout at him, “Hey! That's not very nice..” you reply, tossing a gummy worm at him.

His typically neutral expression shifts into a slight smile. “I’m just kidding. I’m glad you like them. Didn’t know which ones I should get..”

After a couple minutes of silence, besides the sound of the radio, you interrupt, “So.. why do you feel the need to do this?” you ask, fumbling with the bag of gummy worms in your lap.

Megumi’s gaze flickers back to you for a split second, “Don’t have a reason. Just wanted to.” He clears his throat, sitting up a bit straighter. His fingers tap on the edge of the steering wheel to the beat of the radio as you turn the next corner.

You sit comfortably on Megumi’s cold leather couch, shivering. Oddly enough, you swear his apartment looks a lot cleaner than before..

“Do you not have a heater or something?” you mutter, your teeth chattering. You didn’t expect it to be so cold.

Megumi shakes his head. He pulls off his hoodie over his head, and you catch a glimpse of his V line as the shirt underneath lifts up. He tosses it in your direction. “Take that. There’s a blanket under the coffee table, too.” he replies gruffly as he opens the fridge.

These few minutes of silence with him feels.. comfortable. You don’t feel like you have to force yourself to speak, or scan your mind for any possible topics to bring up. You just sit there idly, a faint smile on your face, tracing shapes on the leather couch while you wait for him to return. He comes back to the couch shortly with a plate of brownies.

“Brownies?” you utter with confusion, pulling his sweatshirt over your head. It smells of lavender, cologne, and sweat. An oddly comforting scent. You relax on the couch as you wrap the blankets around your freezing legs.

“Yeah. They’re edible brownies. Made them myself.” he says with confidence, setting the plate down on the coffee table.

Your mouth hangs open for a few seconds with admiration, “Really? Thats.. cool.” You smile earnestly as he plops down beside you.

He raises his eyebrows, “Yeah, I guess.” he says quietly, cutting off a small piece for you.

“Hey! Why do I get such a small piece?” you ask, flicking him on the arm playfully.

“Cause you’re still new to this, idiot. And I wanted to make them strong enough for me, too.” He holds the piece out for you, and you hesitantly pop it in your mouth.

You raise your eyebrows as you ponder the taste, “Mm, tastes funky..” you say as you chew it up. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but it doesn’t taste bad necessarily.

Megumi snorts, “Yeah, there’s weed in it, idiot.” he says with a grin, before taking a bite out of the whole brownie, and you swear that’s the first time you’ve seen him smile in front of you genuinely.

You shake your head, “What happened to the nice guy who saved me at the party?” you tease with faux disappointment, wrapping yourself in the blanket.

Megumi scoffs, “He’s sitting right front of you.” Megumi kicks his legs up on coffee table, stretching out comfortably. He holds the plate of brownies in his lap, popping another in his mouth. His fingers tap idly on the edge of the plate, “These will probably take a while to kick in, so..” He grabs a tv remote from his coffee table compartment, along with two gaming controllers. He tosses one into your lap, “You any good at Mario Kart?”

“I think I can feel it now..” You whisper, slowly turning your gaze to him as an unfamiliar heat pulses throughout your body.

Megumi narrows his eyes, “Why are you whispering?” he asks, sneaking a quick glance at you before turning back to his phone.

You pause for a minute, before sputtering out; “I-I don’t know..”

He laughs, “Yeah, you’re definitely high right now.” he says with a shy smile, setting his phone down beside him. “Feels better than yesterday?”

You nod and your mouth uncontrollably curves into a cheesy smile. “Yeah. Feels good.” you giggle out, hiding the lower half of your face in the blanket. You curl up, holding your knees to your chest.

He nods back, “Good,” he mutters softly. “I felt bad about last night. As much as I like those guys.. they tend to be even a bit much for me, sometimes.” he says, fidgeting with the hem of his t-shirt. For the first time, you really take in his appearance. His blue eyes, long eyelashes, and messy hair. He’s gorgeous, really. You wonder how you’re even breathing the same air right now, or even in the same room. A slight blush creeps up his neck, “You okay?” he asks nervously. You realize you’ve probably been staring at him for at least 30 seconds.

You feel a flutter in your stomach, similar to when you had first met. “Sorry. Spaced out.” you say with an awkward smile, clasping your hands together in your lap. Finally, your intoxication gives you the courage to ask what you’ve been wondering. “So.. question.” you ask hesitantly.

He quirks his brow, “Ask.”

You lean your hand into your palm, “What happened between you and Nobara?” you ask. He responds with a deep sigh, that leads you to guess it didn't go over well. Maybe it was too personal a question. "S-Sorry, you don't have to answer. I don't know why I asked that, really-" you stammer, before he interrupts you. "Its fine. I assumed she'd probably tell you eventually." he says lowly, massaging the back of his neck. "Its.. difficult to explain." "I'll listen." you say with a small smile, nodding understandingly. Megumi leans his head back, staring at the ceiling as if he's trying to recall the relationship. "It was nothing to do with Nobara. I just don't like relationships." he says bluntly, combing a hand through his raven hair. "The commitment it requires. The energy, the time." You bite your lip as you listen to his every word, each one driving you further to disappointment. "Its hard to see myself with someone for the rest of my life." You avert your gaze, "Yeah, I understand what you mean." you say with a forced smile. Realistically, you don't understand it at all. You had dreamed for so long to have a partner. Someone to treat you right, make you feel loved and cared for, and right when you think you've found a possible contender, you get your heart crushed. He curls a lock of his hair around his finger, fidgeting with it. "Maybe that'll change, though. I don't really know yet." He shifts his gaze back to you, lips pressed into a line. "Anyways, enough about me." He sits on his side, facing you. "Tell me more about you." Of course, high out of your mind, you spill every little detail about yourself that comes to mind, including nearly your whole life story, but the whole time he just.. sits there and listens. Never interrupting, unless to ask a clarifying question. He nods attentively, watching you explain your life up until this very moment, sometimes even a faint smile tugging at his lips. Eventually you realize the sun has set outside, you can barely see him with the dim light of the Mario Kart game paused mid-game on the TV screen, and you've completely forgotten about your gummy worms. Your eyes start to drift closed every few seconds involuntarily, before snapping awake again. Eventually, he drifts off to sleep too, his legs intertwining with yours beneath the blanket as you both rest, and you dream of your black-haired savior over and over again.

Gradually, you began to rouse from your slumber, your ears catching the familiar strains of Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas' echoing throughout the house. A sigh escaped your lips as you reached for your phone on the bedside table, its bold white numbers revealing the unwelcome truth.

"9:00 AM, December 1st," you muttered, rubbing the bridge of your nose.

Your boyfriend, Schlatt, didn't just love Christmas; he absolutely adored it. Without fail, on the first day of December, his Christmas spirit exploded. The entire house transformed into a festive wonderland, with red and green lights, oversized stockings, a beautiful Christmas tree, and festive garland appearing as if by magic on this day.

Suddenly, a terrible shrieking sound emanated from the kitchen. Was the kettle boiling? Was your pet in trouble? After a moment of analysis, you realized it was Schlatt, singing his heart out to the blaring Christmas tunes.

Grabbing one of his oversized hoodies from the floor, you made your way to the kitchen, the music growing louder with each step.

"All I want for Christmas isssss YOUUUUUUU!" He screamed off-key, using a wooden spoon as a microphone.

"J, what are you doing? It's 9 AM on a Saturday," you grumbled, pressing the mute button on the speaker he had set up.

"Did you forget? C'mon, y/n, you can't forget!"

"I know, I know," you chuckled, hugging his shirtless torso from behind.

"Uh... Are those gingerbread men?" you questioned, pointing down to his festive-colored boxers.

"Of course, what else would I be wearing?" he playfully scoffed, holding out the fabric to show you.

"Well, they're great," you said, hugging him once more.

After having breakfast and taking a refreshing shower, it was time to deck the halls.

"Okay, first on the agenda is the tree, of course," he happily declared, pulling out the massive box holding the tree.

With Christmas music filling the air, you set up the tree. You and Schlatt had decided on a faux Christmas tree to avoid the mess and work. Together, you opened the box and carefully placed the tree in its designated spot.

"Perfect! Now, time for decorating!" he exclaimed, pulling out a big box of decorations.

One by one, you pulled out the beautiful ornaments, placing them delicately on the branches. With snow falling gently outside the window, Schlatt humming along to ambient Christmas music, and the fireplace crackling, you felt completely at peace.

"There, the last ornament," he announced, placing the glass object on a tree branch.

Grinning, you sleepily draped your arms around historso, resting your head against his shoulder. Softly he pressed a kiss against your forehead, wrapping his arms snugly around your waist.

"It looks beautiful."

"Just like someone I know," he remarked, kissing your forehead again.

Taking in the beautiful scene, you became aware of the increasing challenge of keeping your eyes open. He smiled adoringly at you before suddenly sweeping you off your feet.

"What're you doing?"

"Taking my baby to bed. You've been up since 9 AM."

"You realize that's a normal wake-up time, right?"

"Shhhh, you're not making sense because you're so tired," he teased, gently setting you on your side of the bed.

He drew back the duvet, creating space for you to crawl beneath the covers. Once you were settled in, he pulled the covers up to your neck, tucking you in snugly.

"Goodnight, sleep well," he cooed, placing a soft kiss on your lips before turning toward the door.

"Wait, where are you going?" you pouted, emerging from your blanket cocoon.

"Oh, I was just going to finish setting up..."

"Can you come to sleep?" you begged, giving him your best puppy eyes.

"How can I say no to that face?" he chuckled, making his way to the opposite side of the bed and crawling under the sheets.

Immediately, you scooted closer, cuddling against his side. Contentedly sighing, he pulled you on top of him, his arms enveloping you in a warm embrace.

The warmth of his embrace and the softness of the bed enveloped you in a cozy cocoon of comfort. His scent, a mixture of his favorite cologne and the faint aroma of fresh pine from the newly decorated Christmas tree, provided an inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect respite from the whirlwind of holiday preparations that had taken over the house.

okayyy SO. you said you were bored and to send asks. well, here's mine. who's your favorite matt damon character, and why?

ohhh anon you dk what you’ve lined yourself up for but buckle up bc you’re getting a guide with pictures

atm? Probably Groves from Oppenheimer! ik there’s a lot to unpack with that but hear me out.

so it was the first performance I properly paid attention to and noticed Matt Damon in, and rlly he checks off a lot of the traits of characters I’ve loved before but they’re all mingled into one!

his moustache reminded me of Aldo Raine and his attitude reminded me of Don from fury but I love how he’s built rlly solidly and I love the voice Damon does for him and I love how he’s characterised as a hardass with a bad temper and a slight sense of humour.

He looks so good in the hearing scene in his suit!

The one thing I rlly can’t fault abt Oppenheimer is the cast themselves bc they did a really great job but I felt rlly guilty at first for finding Groves attractive esp bc there were lots of Cillian Murphy girls getting a lot of flack for writing Oppenheimer x reader fanfiction but Oppenheimer takes a lot of creative liberties and when I thirst over Matt Damon as Groves in the movie it’s a completely different entity to the real world counterpart. Additionally, partly bc Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project are becoming kinda hyperfixations for me, I’m reading up a lot on both to (idk how to phrase this) kind of hold the plotting and spin of events the film portrays accountable and make sure I know enough to separate the film as a fictional, dramatised take on real life events. I think you can’t really look at biopics and films based on true stories the same when you know the facts. (obvs with very attractive film stars cast as irl ppl so some attraction was inevitable I think and idk I don’t think they should’ve done the casting in the way they did lol.) everytime I see a pic of irl groves i wail in agony bc why did Chris Nolan yassify him?

second is Mark Watney bc he’s just pookie. he’s poo fimbly. he’s baby. he is so wonderful. I love his optimistic ass. Blondebeard my beloved. Love his dancing and everything.

but anyway I think other joint seconds are probably Gardner Lodge from Suburbicon who I discuss with my beloved @littlegreenfag or Jean de Carrouges (haven’t watched Last Duel properly but medieval Matt is super hot ok).

Gahh!!  I had half of this typed out on my phone and then it refreshed and I lost everything!!  So if this isn’t good, it’s because I forgot what I had before and I apologise! And this took WAY TOO LONG to get done.... and the ending is kind of lame, but I hope you still like it!!  I also apologise for the randomly placed gifs... This is the longest thing I’ve ever written and it just looked blank..

It was still really hard to wrap your head around how things were now.  With the fall of Negan, everything was different.  Most of the saviors surrendered to Rick and his group, which seemed to be for the best.  There would always be people who were still devoted to following Negan, but for the most part everything was peaceful. What was even more difficult to wrap your head around was the fact that Daryl was the one in charge of them now.  It left you with a lot of feelings you had to ignore.  You two had a past.  A very good past, but when everything went to shit you two were separated and that was the end of it.  You had spent years trying to convince yourself that he wasn’t dead.  He was very capable of taking care of himself, but unexpected things happen all the time and you just were never sure.   You had only been with the saviors for a couple years, after they found you in your shack.  They offered you everything you could ever imagine, but there was always a catch to things that seemed too good to be true.  It wasn’t until Negan and Rick started their war with each other that you found out Daryl was still alive. When you first saw him, you wanted to run up and wrap your arms around him, never let him go.  But you couldn’t.  Surely he would understand when and if he discovered you were still alive.   It was a weird feeling seeing him take charge.  He was always the type of person who kept to himself and didn’t interfere with anyone unless he was provoked.  But here he was, giving out orders and getting shit done.  You always saw it in him, and you were happy he finally saw it in himself to do it.   He finally had a moment alone and you saw it as your chance to approach him.  You lingered for a moment, unsure of what you would say or how you would approach him.  It had been several years since you had seen each other, since you had talked to each other, it was almost easier to just let him think you were dead.  But something in you pushed you to go forward.   Slowly you moved forward, internally freaking out.  You were about to turn and run away when he noticed someone standing close by and turned to look at you.  You were the last person he ever thought he’d see.  “Y/N?”  His voice caused you to stop in your tracks.  Turning slowly, you looked at him.  Your eyes burning as you tried to hold in the emotions that wanted to burst from you.  Without saying anything else, he lunged towards you and wrapped his arms around you, looking at you every few seconds to make sure he wasn’t losing him mind. “I can’t believe it’s you, I thought you were dead.”   You cracked, your arms instinctively wrapped around him, holding on tightly to the rim his his vest.  Tears streaming down your face as you tried to grasp the reality of you actually being able to hold him again.  It almost felt like a dream.  You didn’t let yourself get too caught up in the moment, though.  After a few minutes, you pushed him back and wiped your face, looking around to make sure no one saw you, especially Justin.  

“I know, I’m sorry.  They picked me up about two years ago.  I’ve known you were ok for a while, but I didn’t know how to tell you.”  He nodded, showing he understood.  The saviors were under tight surveillance, any type of suspicious movement and you were questioned.  “But you’re ok?”  He asked, reaching his hand out to touch your face.  You pulled back, which caused him to furrow his brow in confusion.  “I’m fine.  I’ve been fine.  Despite what most people think, Negan treated his woman fairly well.” “Sure, as one of his sex slaves.  If you didn’t do what he said, you were back out on your ass to defend for yourself.  I know what happened around here.  You were better off on your own.”  He started, trying to stop himself from getting too upset.  “But it’s different now.  You can leave and not worry about anything happenin’ to ya. Come back with me to Hilltop.  We can start over.”   As perfect as that sounded, you knew you were stuck.  And the way he was looking at you made it so much harder for you to turn him down.  “… I can’t.” You spoke softly, your face contorted with pain.  You looked down, not being able to look at him any longer.  “Why not?”  His tone was soft but firm. “Because.. I…have a life here.  I have someone here..” You looked up at his face again, wanting to read his expression.  He looked hurt and confused.  “I can’t just drop everything and leave.”  “Why not?” His voice was louder.  “Did you already forget what we had before all this went to shit?  What we were?  You just move on like none of that mattered?”   “No!  I looked for you, I didn’t just give up.  Every group I came across, your face was the first thing I looked for.  But after years of not seeing you or having any sign that you were ok, I had to do what I needed to to live. Unfortunately this was the group that allowed me to do that.  And things just happened.  It’s not like I looked for someone to replace you.”   He was quiet, for what felt like a really long time.  “Who is it?”  His question knocked you off guard.  “What?”  “Who is it? This person yer with.”  “It doesn’t matter..”  You shifted, becoming uncomfortable.  “It does to me.  If I can’t get you to come back with me, it must be a damn good reason.  Who is it?”  You let out a defeated sigh.  “Justin.”  His shoulders fell in defeat and he needed to walk off that knowledge for a moment before turning back to face you.  He stood there, not knowing what to say to you.  “You’re choosing to stay here for that prick?”  He shook his head and turned to leave once more before stopping one last time.  “You know, for a second I thought maybe we could have had what we lost.  Stupid of me to think you’d want the same thing.”  Before you could say anything else, he continued on his way, leaving you standing there.  

Daryl went off to a secluded area to try and clear his mind.  He tried really hard to understand why this turned out the way it did.  He paced around, kicking scraps of wood out of his way.  “Daryl? Is everything ok?”  Carol’s voice broke his thinking process.  He didn’t say anything, just gradually made his way over to where she had seated herself.  Carol knew not to try and force him to talk, that he would in his own time.  After some time of silence, he finally opened his mouth to speak.  “Before the virus broke, I had a life.  It was far from perfect, but I had someone who made it more bearable.  We were engaged.  When everything fell apart, we got separated and I hadn’t seen her since.  I thought maybe she died or just.. disappeared. But she’s been here this whole time.”  Carol nudged his shoulder with hers.  “Well, that’s great.  Isn’t it?”   “She doesn’t want to leave.”  “That doesn’t make sense.  Why not?”  He stood up once again and started to pace some more, finding it difficult to sit still.  “She said she has a life here.  And she’s with that prick, Justin. “  Carol paused to think. She could see his dilemma, but she could also see Y/N’s.  “Maybe there’s more to what she’s saying.  I don’t think you can really expect things to go right back to where you left off.  It’s been a long time since you two have seen each other, maybe you have to work up to that point again.”  Daryl just shook his head. He knew it didn’t need to be this complicated.  They found each other again, that’s all that should matter.  “Don’t get too wrapped up in your thoughts there, okay, Daryl?  I have no doubt that she still loves you, it’s just hard right now.  Maybe she doesn’t know how to process things either.  But I wouldn’t give up too easily.  Fight for her.  You’re good at that sort of thing.”  She smirked at him.  “I’m not gonna give up.. I’ll get her back.” Daryl finally chimed in, determination on his voice.  “Good!  That’s the Pookie I know.”

Describe your comic’s protagonist.  Why should we as an audience care about them and their goals?

Nutty (Court of Roses)

Technically I have five protagonists in Court of Roses http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/, but I can focus on the main one; Merlow is simply a wandering minstrel who, despite fighting some inner demons, just wants to bring laughter and song everywhere he goes. He is passionate and loves his line of work, and finds the beauty in all expressions in music, and, in turn, in life and in people. His friendly and sincere approach to everyone is what helps bring him and the other four main bards together. Without spoiling too much, once they begin to travel together, he'll be the unofficial leader and the glue between them all.

HoK is about heartbreaks that develop quietly, between people who do genuinely care about each other. The main example of such heartbreaks is feeling abandoned when you need their support more than ever. A lot of us have been through that, myself included. There are countless variations of that experience; the specific variations that I know firsthand, I've mixed them around and given to Ethan and Danbi. That's why their story speaks to my soul, the bruised part of it. And maybe it will speak to yours, too, for the same reasons.

Millennium's http://millennium.thecomicseries.com/ protagonist, Sage, is a kindhearted, southern farmer who has been thrown into a lot of bad situations he could never understand or prepare for, but always approaches with as much love as he can. I guess we root for him because we, too, want to see the best in things and have that kind of positivity work out.

Conan of Galebound http://www.galebound.com/ is a pretty typical farmboy, except he just learned that he's a Hidden Backup Prince, that he has the power to command Magicians, that he's an assassination target, his kidnapper/protector is probably also an assassin, and the literal ocean called him "far worse"--whatever that means. He's had a rough couple of days. I like to think he's relatable and ultimately a good person. At first, his goal was just to get back home, but then he made a terrible mistake with his newly-discovered power. Immediately he takes responsibility for his actions, seeking to learn more about this power so he doesn't hurt anyone else and maybe even help against those using the same power for cruel reasons. Once he feels responsible for something, he tends to through his entire self into taking care of or fixing a problem--sometimes to the point of being a bit self-sacrificial about it. His overall arc, though, is really about following your heart, and recognizing what you really want to do versus what you're doing out of a sense of obligation--or sometimes discovering that your "obligations" and what you want are one and the same.

My comic's protagonist (http://ask-a-warlock.tumblr.com/) is actually not the warlock...it's a small bird named Margo who is an animate drawing. She hops out of an illuminated manuscript one day and discovers the real world is very brutal and harsh. Through a series of buddy adventures with a knight, and demonic crime-solving with a cleric, Margo does eventually choose to be part of the real world, because she belongs with her friends...although she secretly desires to be human, as well(edited)

The Angel with Black Wings http://blackwings.mharz.com/ or Big Sis as what me and my readers call her at this point is a sweet and very caring towards people. She's like a motherly figure of some sort. (The one who will tuck you in bed and bake you loads of cookies) However she's heavily plagued by mental illness (feeling extreme guilt and blaming herself on anything bad that happens around her, thinking she doesn't deserve anything good in life, and inner voices that seems to be getting stronger as time passes.) Even tho she thinks she doesn't deserve it, deep down there is a tiny glimmer of hope that one day, she'd be forgiven. Altho her mental issues are amplified, I think most of us can relate to have felt guilt about something we did/didn't do and dwelled and ruminated on it for so long, having uncontrollable thoughts and inner voices that tells us that we are worthless, we are horrible people, everyone hates us and we don't deserve anything. I personally on that boat and slowly working on getting better. So I wrote my comics in the hope whoever reads my comics can make them feel better in some way and find that glimmer of hope. wheeze (edited)

Emily (http://welcometoblackball.com/) is pretty much a passive doormat. She starts out just doing whatever her parents say and taking the path of least resistence until she feels she can't, that she has to take action to solve her sister's murder. But she has no patience for the shenanigans and games of others, always taking the most direct path she can. Some would say this makes her a concise person, but in her mind she's just doing what's easiest. She ends becoming more assertive and independent over time until she can finally make her own life choices with confidence. A good bit of her insecurities come from being very ill with measles a few years ago, and having to have her hair shaved off. It never grew back quite the same as it was, and her parents are a little more on her case because they want her to marry well in society.

I think on paper, Toivo (https://ingress-comic.com/) sounds awful. He’s a wizard professor, single father, serial romantic, and unlucky in his adventures. He’s anxious and a little mean and obnoxious. He’s snarky and kind of an asshole and makes mistakes and doesn’t consider other people’s emotions, so he makes things hard for other people. He orchestrates most of the problems he has to solve. But i think that’s why he’s fun? He’s a good person at heart but he isn’t perfect and that’s the type of character I like to read about.

@Desnik I like to think he is! One of my favorite comic series is Ranma 1/2, and I think that series fundamentally taught me that you can have characters who are objectively not great people and still likable.

I've enjoyed reading his misadventures so far. I think that since he usually learns some sort of lesson from his misadventures it makes him really endearing to balance out his flaws

Lamar Anderson, the current focus of We Are The Wyrecats (http://wyrecats.com/) is a superhero of unyielding principle, to the point of self-destructive fanaticism. He’s a mute genius with cerebral palsy, who has difficulty walking without his hero armor. The Wyrecats were the first and only time he felt like he had friends, and K.A. was his first crush (reciprocated, though neither of them acted on it). When she was put in a coma and the team disbanded, he basically started a one man war against the US government that secretly initiated the plot (long story). Five years later, with K.A. waking up, he’s been questioning his approach, which involved stockpiling weapons and hiring mercenaries to wage guerilla war upon his country’s intelligence agencies. Since K.A.’s hardly in the best mental health at the moment, Lamar’s trying to do his best by her to make a world she’d want to live in.

Mizuki Sato is the protagonist of Super Galaxy Knights Deluxe R (http://sgkdr.thecomicseries.com/). She's a small woman from a small farm town, going on adventures through a strange world. Mizuki's main draw is that she's entertaining to watch. She constantly back-sasses & annoys the people she encounters on her journey (to be fair, some of those people are Taci Ramino) - and when action happens, Mizuki is ahead of the game, out-strategizing her enemies and pushing past her own limits. She may be a bit reckless with her own health, but to her it's worth it if she's helping other people in any way. Mizuki's main goal in life is to find love - someone she could get married to someday, specifically. But... that often doesn't work out for her. Every time Mizuki falls for someone, she loses them to someone else - or worse, she ends up in a short-lived relationship filled with endless put-downs. The people Mizuki encounters in her daily life enjoy the fact that she's around. They like the way she entertains them, the way she helps them out, the way she... makes them happy. But, at least from Mizuki's perspective, nobody she meets actually loves her in any meaningful way. anyway funney muscle lady shoot rainbow lasers woo

My comic AntiBunny http://antibunny.net/ has multiple protagonists depending on what angle we're seeing the world through, but the original protagonist Pooky Bunny can be best described as a gender ambiguous depressed mess who's trying to become a better person. Why should you care? When you first meet Pooky their depression is clearly in control. As the story unfolds in the past you start to see where that depression comes from, and as it unfolds in the present you'll see Pooky learning to let others in, slowly moving to become a better person. Pooky is not OK, and realizes that, but also sees a way forward. So if you want to see someone who is initially consumed by their flaws and who eventually realizes them and works to overcome them, then maybe you'll care about Pooky. What are their goals? Pooky has both what I'd call external goals, that is things they want to accomplish in the real world, and internal ones, that is how they'd like to change as a person. Externally Pooky is all about unraveling mysteries. Being a reporter Pooky often is chasing a story. Internally Pooky's goals change. Early on it's little more than subsistence. Struggling to get by from one day to the next. Though as the story progresses as Pooky says "I'm trying to be a better person." Pooky goes from being someone who's dead inside to coming alive again. You'll see that trauma in Nailbat that started this, and in The Gritty City Stories you'll see the recovery. It's all about the fall, bottoming out, and climbing back up. Essentially that's Pooky.

Attila Polyák

Anne is the protagonist and mostly the perspective character of Tales of Midgard: The Age of Magic https://talesofmidgard.com/comic/book-1-cover-page/. She's a knight and a mage and more or less she's a well established person with a generally (currently) good life. She's definitely not someone special. Magic is very common and accessible to basically everyone and being a knight in a world full of magic is also not really extraordinary. So why should you care about someone who's not special? That's exactly the point! Most fantasy stories are set in fantastic worlds yet the main cast, and the protagonists especially, are still special. Even compared to the world. Not here. This story is the story of the everyman. The true everyman, not a chosen one, not someone who is surrounded by prophecies left and right, just your regular normal person. Of course we're still in a fantasy world so what's regular to the characters is still fantastic for the readers, and these "everydays" are still adventures compared to the normal lives most of us live in real life. Plus... Just because she not special she and everyone else in the story can still, just like in real life, be swooped up into events that are larger than life and seeing normal people cope with the extraordinary is always more interesting than extraordinary people playing their own game.

Unlikely Chapter 1

I will be the first person to tell you - there was nothing about this relationship that made sense. On paper, we were painfully dissimilar: him, a sexy, successful Irish popstar wanted by half the world, and me, an American werewolf living in London. Well, not quite a werewolf, but it took monthly waxings to keep my Greek heritage off my upper lip. I barely topped out at 5’2” on a good shoe day, and leaned more towards the plump end of the body shape spectrum. My grandmother often spoke of my child bearing hips and tried to convince me that men liked a big ass and full boobs. She had yet to be proven right. Meanwhile, his chicken legs looked like they could barely support him. He binged watched ESPN and Golf Channel, and I had zero hand/eye coordination (the fact that I played soccer in high school was a fluke - there were no cuts). Before I met him I barely even knew what a melody was and had forgotten everything I had learned in elementary school music classes. He played the guitar like he was born with it, and pulled notes out of the air to make music that made my heart ache. As I said, nothing about us made sense.

I’d moved to the UK to attend grad school four years ago, and ended up staying. After spending my first year year here alone, and going on what can only be described as a series of tragic dates with men I’d met online, I was lonely and seemingly incapable of making friends. In an act of desperation, I texted my godmother’s niece, Hannah. The one and only time I'd met her we were six. She had told me that my hair cut made me look like a boy and I tripped her going up the stairs. It definitely was not love at first sight. I’d come to London with the number programmed into my phone, but determined not to contact the now-grown mean girl. However, desperate times...

It turned out that Hannah had actually grown up quite kick ass. She did something in the financial sector I could not begin to explain, but she was funny, charming, and when drunk could belch the alphabet. Given that my previous 52 Saturday nights had been filled with Netflix and listening to my neighbors fight or fuck, I latched on quickly. Over the course of the next few years I became friends with her crowd of friends, and a few people I befriended came into the mix. It was a small but lovely urban family, and for the most part we all accepted one another for who we were. I barely missed getting laid so good that my head pounded into a headboard while screaming out for God. Barely.

Hannah was obsessed. Seriously. I was ready to brain her. The girl had finally swiped right and found a guy she was really into. For weeks we heard about him ad nauseum - Willie was Irish, worked at a firm four doors down from her in The City, and seemed like an all around decent chap. Being bitter, I naturally hated him before I met him. The nail in his coffin came the night Hannah casually brought up his roommate, and how she thought I’d like him. Nope. Not the dreaded friend fix up.

“Stop it right now. You know that’s a hard no.” I flung a piece of baby corn at her out of my stir fry to accentuate my point.

“C’mon. He’s proper cute, and is laddy without being a lad.”

“Yeah, because everything about me screams that I’m the lad type.”

“It’s not like a new type would kill you. There are only so many men in London who live in their mother’s basements with cats.”

“Never going to let me live that down, are ya?”

“Nope. Come on. He’s a musician and he’s hilarious. I met him at their house the other night. I think you two would get on. So does Willie.”

“Willie hasn’t met me. How does he have any idea who I’d get along with?”

“Obviously he’s heard all about you and the rest of the gang and seen pics on my Insta.”

I went back to my dinner frowning. It’s not that I didn’t want to meet guys, it’s that I was scared to meet them. Undoubtedly I would say something weird or awkward, or give out far more information than they ever wanted to know. A few dudes had piqued my interest over the years, but no one that I liked ever really liked me, and vice versa. A lot of mediocre to decent sex had been had (I’m not angel - momma knows what she likes), but that whole happily ever after thing didn’t seem like reality. At 27, I resigned myself to possibly getting a hamster (allergic to cats and who wants to walk a dog in London?) and embracing my spinsterhood.

This conversation and my lack of game stayed in the back of my mind for the next few days. Hannah was right about needing a change in my scenery. Especially since the failed date with the cat dude. My eyes itched in the memory. However, it was Thursday, and Thursday was quiz night at the pub. 1) im picking two scenes cause i can and nobody can stop me. the first scene i really liked was the warehouse confrontation with the bomb. i liked pooky both got some answers but also basically went "nope im out yo." the combination worked for me and made it both humorous and narratively satisfying. the other scene i liked was the scene where hannibal is waiting in the hospital and just casually talking to mulligan without realizing who he is. then mulligan reveals himself in the most crass way possible. again, i just like the combination. its funny, but narratively satisfying since i kept wondering when wed get to see penelope's dad ever since he was mentioned. 2) penelope. Idk. theres just something i really like about penelope. She's go this good sense of optimism and faith, but shes not overbearing or crazy. And even if she's not some rebellious sleuth or fighter or anything, the comic shows that her words have the power to change things just as much the fighting and other elements. 3) Well given a scene that was part of nailbat's story, Pooky is pretty obviously involved with enchanted forest. I imagine some boss type figure. And Pooky might be some prized experiment somehow? like the next step in bunny evolution or something like that. but maybe pooky had like the longest incubation period known to all sapient kind. As for what dark pooky intends, more evil science. I mean you don't get to be called dark pooky if you do the good science.

4) I'm not sure I have good theories about the glow. Like, maybe again, another part of dark pooky science somehow. Like a desire mutation that is a signal for the next stage of evolution. As for the robot, yes, i think penny will. and I'm really looking forward to it considering who that robot is. I think it's really going to be an emotional rollercoaster for everyone. 5) well given superheroing is a thing in this world, probably that or something. maybe not superheros but like a step down. like neighborhood watch on steroids. or maybe a group of detectives. i think pandora discovered something she shouldnt have though, which put her at odds with agent wesson. as for mulligan's revenge, nah i highly doubt it. more just because i think someone is going to get to agent wesson long before he does. and narratively speaking, i think mulligan's arc will be more about putting his kids first and revenge second.

However, I think Pooky's pursuit will change the world regardless and force humans and rabbits alike to confront ugly truths about themselves and the world theyve created. Cause that seems to be a heavy theme and Pooky has shown to know how to work the media to drive that message home. 7) Enchanted Forest. And Agent Wesson is probably alive and probably plotting some hardcore revenge against Pooky. Agent Wesson will also bide time and wait until we've basically forgotten the character and then blamo, everything is ruined, sad times are had, etc. etc. etc. It will not be a good time

8) I think Penelope will manage. Shes the determined sort who will probably persevere. Although I also feel that her testimony wont matter and that inevitably the bad guy will win. As for Auntie Fae, I'm not sure besides being racist. Although I actually think she has a bigger agenda then the characters realize quite yet. In the sense that theyll think she just wants to get rid of rabbits when shes up to bigger things. like helping out evil scientists or something. 9) I think they'll change relationships for the better but not by much. Change is a slow, slow process and the more you try to force it, the less it usually works. But that's okay and I think whatll maatter is just changing the hearts of even a few ppl. Like what happened with Nailbat because I found Nailbat's story was really strong because of that aspect. Even though Nailbat was just one person, he changed some people lives and also had his life changed. If I had to pick someone who would actually instigate change, then Penelope. Cause Penelope is a badass with words insofar and really seems to leave an impact on all the people she interacts with.

i haven't been able to get through the archive yet, but right now my favorite scene is when we first see penelope street preaching. i don't know why, but I like the idea of this stalking amy-rose-type turning out to be something completely different

my favorite character so far is juju. gets introduced as a witch, and immediately gets herself trapped in a doll. love her.

10) a lot of stuff. like im really looking forward to the robot being fixed, to pooky exploring the dark pooky stuff more, seeing penelope more, and so forth. theres a lot of really great threads that are building up and id love to see them start paying off and how cause im sure itll be epic! in general, while it took me a bit to get into it, i really enjoyed the comic once i did and the story started to show its hidden depths.

I just want to pop in and say that I did make it partially through the archive this week, but probably won't have time to finish, and thought Penelope was a very cute character. I paged through a bit of the later pages too and loved seeing how the art/craftmanship progressed.

((I don't know what the policy is on critique in these segments, so I will definitely strike this from the record if it's not appropriate @RebelVampire , but when the story started alternating between the Pooky storyline and the Nailbat storyline every other page is when I started to lose focus and eventually dropped off reading because it was too confusing to keep track of the story. I think these storylines would benefit from not being mixed in the archives. I definitely know the challenge of spending time fixing old stuff versus using that time to move forward, but if you decided to migrate the story to a PHP-based solution in the future instead of static HTML, archive curation would be a factor I'd strongly recommend considering.))

Smokin’ and Unfiltered: Toni Braxton Talks New Album

When you have seven Grammys and an iconic voice that can drop to ocean depths, it’s your God-given right to also have a no-wings-in-my-dressing-room policy. This is Toni Braxton in 2018, still decrying the existence of pungent food in her midst before a concert. But sex? Cigars? Alkaline water? Unbreak Ms. Braxton’s heart with any of the above.

While talking up her first solo album in eight years, Sex & Cigarettes, the 50-year-old R&B diva was in tell-all mode, whether the topic of discussion was the current generation’s outspoken female artists, the Mariah and Janet duets that might’ve been (thanks a lot, bankruptcy and babies!), or the secret — hint: nose job — behind hitting those famous notes.

That album cover, Toni. You’re on fire.

Thank you. I feel good about it. You know, I was hungry while I was doing that. That was a little hard. But I love the album cover. I thought [photographer and director] Randee St Nicholas’s choice of lighting was really superb.

How would you describe your mood there?

It’s self-explanatory with that title: I’m feeling like sex and cigarettes. I feel sexy, like I need a puff afterwards.

You puff?

I smoke cigars once or twice a year. Every year for my birthday I do, and sometimes around the holidays. Smoking is not my friend, with lupus and all, but you have to have a vice or two. A nice stogie, something I can chew. Something really hardy.

You’re known for the deep end of your range, so a few puffs can’t hurt.

My voice is naturally smoky. But when I do the cigars, it’s for my birthday, and I try not to work on my birthday. If I do [work], after my show I do a little puff-puff. Not a puff-puff-pass!

Some commenters on social media aren’t keen on what you’re wearing on the album cover. One wrote, “We as older women have to set an example for younger women.”

Oh, that’s cute. It doesn’t really bother me. I think if you look good, you can wear it. Any age. For me, personally, I don’t wear midriffs. I think I’m too old to wear midriffs. To each his own. It’s just me, my body shape, I’m sure. But I work hard on my body — not just because I’m older, because I like to be in great health. And it’s OK for people to have their opinion. I have my opinion, too, on things that I probably shouldn’t. But I would never post it.

Can you talk about the pressure on you and other women to dress and look a certain way? Have those industry expectations changed with age?

Gosh, you know, I feel forever 25. It’s kind of weird. Parts of me are 25. Probably. [Laughs.] I feel good about myself. In this industry, I would be disappointed if women [tried to tell other women how to dress]. I mean, guys don’t know, but women — we should embrace each other. I look at Madonna; she’s still doing it, and Madonna’s almost 60. Who cares? Or look at me, Janet [Jackson] or Halle Berry. We’re all in the same group. So, I think it’s all about how you feel about yourself. I like that now people look younger than their age. I think that people today really see people; they’re thinking [about] age less and aren’t thinking numbers. Numbers, to me, just determine how long you’ve been on the Earth. But I’m OK with it. The women’s movement, to me, is great. I’m excited about that part.

Yeah?

I’m really excited about that because my generation in the ’90s, when I peaked, when my career was at its height, we were taught to be a little aloof. You had to be mysterious. The younger generation, which I love, they’re my favorite because they speak as loud as they want. They’re like, “We will not be missed.” Rihanna, she’s my favorite. I just love that about the new generation. It’s just nice to live your life out loud.

How are the #MeToo stories resonating with you?

I think it’s good, I think it’s about time. It doesn’t only affect women, though. I mean, I’ve heard guys who’ve been in situations where they can say “me too,” but guys feel like they can’t say it. I like that people are [now] able to speak out about things that have happened to them, like, “We’re not having it anymore.” But as a woman, I’m proud of my species.

Do you have a #MeToo story?

I don’t have a #MeToo story, thank goodness. I have close friends who have stories. Most of them have chosen not to talk about it because they have kids, and they’re like, “It’s behind me, but it happened to me too.” But I’m very lucky that I don’t have any stories like that.

Going back to the elusiveness of ’90s artists: Did that stop you from being yourself?

Early on I was allowed to be myself and express myself through fashion. I always kind of pushed the envelope on my sexuality. I think it’s definitely different rules for women, compared to rules for guys. And we had to ride the wave a little bit, the women of our generation; if we said anything, we were being a bitch. Of course now it’s just a term of endearment: “That bitch is hot.” And even now the word “diva” is coming back in style, and it’s OK to be a diva. It’s a great moment to be a girl.

Are you a diva?

Oh, all of us are sometimes, absolutely.

What are you most diva-ish about?

I am very, very particular about my [set up] when I go on stage. I don’t like having to adjust my mic when I start performing. I think it’s tacky. Instead of starting off singing, you gotta adjust your mic because they think you’re 5′6″. I’m 5′1″ and three-fourths. You would think my people would know that, but sometimes they forget.

That doesn’t seem like too much to ask. It’s not like you’re requesting a specific brand of water.

Well, I’m particular about that, too, sometimes. As long as it’s high alkaline, [I’m OK], but I think the world is about that water now. But they know that, so they get it. I don’t really have this big rider [I attach to my contract for a performance]. I don’t have anything like that. But I don’t like food in my [dressing] room. Do not have food in my room! I do not want to go on stage smelling like food.

About Sex & Cigarettes: I hear a lot of people have different takes on the title of your song “Deadwood,” and are asking you, “Toni, why is the wood dead?” Why do I have a hunch these people might be your gay friends?

[Laughs.] Yes, they are.

Tell me more.

They were asking me that! But it’s just an appropriate title! I know what deadwood is; I lived in Maryland. And being in the suburbs, as kids, you would see the wood and kick it. “Don’t bring that deadwood in the house.” So, for me, it makes sense and it’s something you just disregard and throw away. You didn’t care about it. But a lot of people were asking me, “Why the wood dead?” And I guess they’ve got a point.

You told me once that your gay boys make you a better girl.

It’s so true. Sometimes I forget to be a girl; I forget to keep it feminine. But my boys remind me to be a girl, to be fabulous about it: “Why are you standing like that? Why are you standing with your shoulders down?” The little things. They just remind me to be a girl. I love it.

The cover of your debut album, with your short hair, denim and that leather jacket, wasn’t exactly your most femme moment.

That is true. That’s kind of the ’90s — when it was still coming off the ’80s. It was a bit more pookie then.

Do you have a gay posse you have to consult before you release new music?

It’s more about my look. My boys usually get my look together for me. I have height envy: I like a particular type of shoe so I can be taller. And they’ll go, “We have to find something [else] that will give you height because those platforms are out. Stop wearing those.” But I wanna be 5′6″. I try to keep it taller and keep current. But they say: “You gotta be ahead of the season, Toni. You can’t do that. We should do this look. OK, we’ll let you [wear] that little thing because that’s kind of indicative of who you are as an artist, so we’ll give you that one dated thing.” They keep me up with the times.

What was the last really dated thing you couldn’t live without?

I wear sweatsuits with high-heeled shoes all the time. You’ll never catch me in a sweatsuit without a high-heeled shoe. I’ll never wear sneakers unless I’m going to the gym.

2018 marks your 25th year in the music business; your first album was released in 1993. I was a little gay boy when I bought it on cassette tape.

You did not say cassette tape. That’s taking me back.

What don’t people know about the making of your debut?

Well, it was just before I got my nose job. Might be too much information, but yeah: We hadn’t finished the album, so I was singing with a fresh nose job, which [was] virtually impossible because it hurt so bad. I don’t know how they do nose jobs now; I think they do it from the inside. Well, [mine] was from the inside too, but you had to wear this little thing on it, and after they took it off, it was so sore. You can’t hardly move the skin between your nose and lips, and I remember it was really difficult to sing.

Did it become easier to hit the high notes or the low notes after the nose job?

The high notes got easier. I had rhinoplasty, but I also had sinus surgery. I know, everybody says that! But it’s really true. Mine was a nose job, but I lucked out, and my doctor fixed my sinuses as well. I didn’t go in there for my sinuses — no. I went in to get my nose fixed, and they also fixed my sinuses. So, I’m telling the truth. Truth: I went in for a nose job. OK, pumpkin?

What else?

The jeans [on the cover] were really too big for me, and they were pretty much cabled in the back. That was a true story. So many little tidbits I could tell.

Why did we get a Whitney and Mariah duet and never a Mariah and Toni duet?

You know, Mariah reached out to me about doing a duet, but unfortunately, it was just before the bankruptcy was gonna happen [Braxton filed for bankruptcy in 1998, and again in 2010], but no one in the world knew. So when she asked me about doing a song together, immediately I wanted to say yes, but I couldn’t because of what was about to unfold.

Why aren’t you calling her right now?

I’m gonna have to do that. There was talk of me and Janet doing a song together, but she was pregnant. But, hey, maybe me and Mariah. We were neighbors for a second, so I probably should’ve reached out to her then, but it’s never too late. You’re actually gonna spark me to maybe talk to her about doing a remix or something. That’s actually a really good idea.

What advice would “Sex & Cigarettes” Toni have for the Toni of 25 years ago?

“Sex and Cigarettes” Toni would tell the Toni of 25 years ago to have more sex and smoke more cigars and have fun. And don’t be afraid to be a bitch.
