The  Traitor Baru Cormorant Liveblog: Chapter 1

I’m going into this mostly unspoiled and will be trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible. Here is what I know so far:

Our dear protagonist is gay, good at maths and spends her time tanking countries’ economies with the power of maths

Being gay is Not Accepted in this society

She also gets drunk a lot and is generally a disaster

There is a lady called Tain Hu who is Hot and Butch

She and Baru are gay for each other

Tain Hu dies at some point?? I think?? And then she ends up part of Baru’s brain somehow. Love how this is a thing in multiple SFF books now

These books are about colonialism

The ending of the first book will upset me for as yet unknown reasons

So with that established, on with the liveblog proper!

The colonialism is...very apparent, very real right from the beginning. A treaty, invasion ships arriving on a pretext, Baru’s mother’s language book? Yeah that’s how it happens, Dickinson knows his stuff

Love Baru’s little family, love the non-heterosexual family structure which I’m guessing will be contrasted with what we see established as a norm later on

Since twitter is now apparently days from crumbling into obsolescence, I guess it’s time to start crossposting my goofy text posts to tumblr, so hello all! I have been in the process of doing a C2 rewatch for the past month or two and I’m currently on episode 35, where these goofballs are about to seize the Mist(take) and flee with poor Marius.

And this episode is even more chaotic when watching it the second time around? We have Tracy. We have random slaughter. We have Thunderstep alerting everyone that there’s a fight going on. We have Marius, who has no idea how much his life is about to change. We have Caleb doing 30 points of damage by catapulting food at pirates. We have Caduceus disappearing and fleeing far from the ship. Just absolute madness.

this scene is so important (to me).

i do headcanon pete as demisexual and the way he says this with so much conviction. i know he probably doesn't even realise what his sexuality is or might be, but he knows that whatever it may be, it has to be with a special person. and eventually, vegas becomes that special person. in some ways, even if pete was interested in vegas before the safe house arc, he never thought he wanted it all with vegas. more like it never even crossed his mind. but because the safe house arc happened, pete did explore his own self and decided that this man was his special person. i don't think he would have kissed vegas otherwise. pete has been shown to resist torture, the only bit of psychological manipulation vegas even bothered to do with him was calling his grandma. pete was well within his own head and perfectly fine when they had sex, and sure vegas was goading him, but pete definitely did not give in to him as a way to get out of the safe house.

he does dissociate and drop right after, and in that scene we see he is already bound in cuffs again, and i wonder if with that faraway look he is contemplating if he made a mistake. if he actually gave something precious to him to a person who wouldn't value it.

and right after, vegas tells him, that just because they had sex does not mean that he can talk back to him. the fact that pete was more open with him after sleeping together, must mean that pete holds it to a higher value than vegas does. and we know vegas holds it to the same value as well, otherwise none of the succeeding things would have happened. but in that moment when vegas flips out (and rightfully so, i would flip out as well), we see both vegas the man who was made and the man who he wants to be, but yes, he sets things in motion and shit fucks up.

but in the following events and the gap in canon, i do believe pete gave it much thought. his own sexuality, his desires, his need for vegas to be in his life. hence, the post credits extra and how pete looks comfortable in his own skin, when he says he is just following his heart.

(ugh god this ship and all its underlying potential means so much to me *cries*)

In my first post, I would like to tell a little about myself, as is already known from the description, my name is Luffy , I'm 17 , I'm a novice artist.

I'm fond of drawing games such as Minecraft, Sky children of light, sometimes I play pg3D (Pixel Gun 3D(I've been playing this game for 6-10 years and the interest is so and did not disappear)), as well as genshin impact, but extremely rarely.
