Illustrated for The Muzzle Up Project.
Let’s get rid of the stigma. A muzzled-dog is NOT A BAD DOG.
Dogs can be trained to happily wear muzzles in the same way you train them to wear a collar/harness. (with positive experiences!)

Early morning trip to the skatepark
If it wasn’t for the missing gate this place would have been fully secure for off lead time. Stays for a couple of pictures were fine though

Nothing like a friend putting a call out for photos of dogs in muzzles to make you remember about #muzzletraining. Cad's muzzle is a modified one from @lurcherlink's shop, because those with enough drop to be suitable for exercise don't come small enough readymade. #lurcherlinkmuzzle #lurcherlink #muzzleupproject #dogmuzzle #snackfeedernotpackleader #cooperativecare https://www.instagram.com/p/B9jk8MMlmiL/?igshid=4vdo3xqp88w8

I am the PROUDEST DOG MAMA. After hanging out on the couch and cuddling with the muzzle on for about 2 hours, we went on a walk... and he was FANTASTIC! Barely complained about the muzzle, we passed 3 dogs with little more than a long stare(which is SIGNIFICANTLY better and calmer than 90% of the time), and one of those times it was a fellow pittie who barked and startled both him and I! Most surprisingly, he never complained about the muzzle around the other dogs, but rather when it came to sniffing in the bushes. For the first time he pooped AND peed with the muzzle on, and after about 10 minutes he was walking with confidence, something I feel like Boomer is still learning. His head held high, tail relaxed, saying hi to people.... I’m so proud of him and how far he has come. For those of you that still are not aware, #muzzletraining is a crucial skill and muzzles an important tool for some dogs safety and security. I’m not talking about muzzling your dog when he’s been bad. I’m talking about dogs who have had troubled histories and are reactive. Dogs who have some behavior issues and need a helping hand to change and alter those behaviors. Dogs who have a habit of eating stuff on the ground and, lets be honest, surgery is expensive and stressful for everyone involved. Boomer is a reactive #rescuedog who has had a rough past, but it’s obvious that he wants to learn and be better. After yesterday’s walk, I KNOW that I’ve made the best decision for him. I can tell he felt safer and more confident. And who knows, maybe someday he won’t need one at all. ❤️🐶❤️ #muzzleupproject #positivemuzzletraining #dogtraining #prouddogmom #confidentdog #rescuestaffy (at Eugene, Oregon)

So, muzzles are NOT mean or cruel. Muzzles are NOT to shut dogs up. Muzzles are NOT to suppress behaviors. Muzzles are NOT to be shoved on a dog. Muzzles are NOT to be put on a dog without proper introduction and conditioning. Muzzles are NOT a reason to push a dog over threshold. Muzzles are not a reason to make a dog face his fear where he exhibits fear response. Muzzles are for safety for others (people, animals, etc) without causing discomfort or the feeling of being trapped to the muzzled dogs. Muzzles are to be used under supervision. Here is an example of when a muzzle IS cruel (I've seen an Instagram video of this-a mistake, it was hard to watch). The caption described it as a dog being aggressive towards lassing bikes/motorbikes and a trainer "rehabbing" the dog. In the video, a dog is in a muzzle and a prong collar. Every time the dog lunges or barks at a passing bike, the dog gets punished (prong collar "correction"). The distance between the dog and the road is close enough that the dog reacts to the trigger every time. He doesn't have a chance to be exposed to the trigger at a safe (for the dog) distance. This is an example of FLOODING. So, in that particular example, yes, the use of a muzzle is cruel. The trainer uses the muzzle in a mean way. It prevented redirected bite towards the trainer without taking into account the dog's discomfort. You bet the dog will associate the muzzle with a bad experience. Not to mention the welfare issue of the process. Please visit @muzzle_up_project or muzzleupproject.com to learn more on why muzzle train, how to find a proper muzzle fit for different muzzle types, muzzled dogs etiquette, etc. #muzzles #muzzleupproject #muzzleup #forcefreedogtraining #positivereinforcement https://www.instagram.com/p/CNWa75tLSHp/?igshid=4bl88hbivcg6

Ori • Pitbull mix • Muzzle Training and Placework During Ori’s stay with us, we worked on conditioning Ori to accept the muzzle without fighting it and tied that into the Place command, which she already had the foundation of from earlier training sessions. Giving Ori a job to do while wearing her muzzle helps to take her mind off of the muzzle and normalize wearing it. Lots of treats and praise were involved of course! Dogs can wear muzzles for a wide variety of reasons, from bite risks to preventing them from eating objects off the ground to preparing them for an emergency. Every dog should learn to wear a muzzle! You can find more information at @muzzle_up_project ☺️ Interested in training? Working on muzzle tolerance with Allie! We hadn’t worked on this in a while so I went a little too fast, but luckily Allie is super tolerant of my ineptitude. Bear the cat provided moral support. Just kidding, he’s impatiently waiting for his turn to train. (I’m serious, all my pets LOVE training) #train20challenge #muzzleupproject #muzzletraining #gooddogswearmuzzles #positivereinforcment #forcefree #positivereinforcementtraining #dogbehavior #dogtraining #dogs #ilovemydog #adoptdontshop #spayandneuter https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Kvqlipw63/?igshid=112nb0fypqm3y

A lot of people think that making dogs wear muzzles is cruel. I don’t. It may not be as comfortable as going “muzzle-free”, but it is safer. Not only is it safer for others, it is also safer for your dog.
Let me give you an example. I bring Mishka on public transport throughout the city because i do not have a car. She isn’t human aggressive, She just doesn’t like to be touched. Often, on the bus or on the subway, she wears a harness with a tag that says “DO NOT TOUCH”. Normally, you would think that it would tell the people not to bend down and touch my dog. However, they rarely listen. Numerous, times I had to tell people to not pet her. What happens when someone touches her and she has really had enough? Or what happens if someone startles her? Yep, she might bite. That is the worst outcome for me, the person, and Mishka. That’s why, I want her to wear a muzzle.
On walks Mishka likes to pick up food, or yummy looking (often uneatable) things off the ground. That can make her sick, or worse, cause blockage. Food like cooked chicken bones can splinter and scrape the inside of the digestive track. I’m working on training her to ignore objects on the ground, but in the mean time, i want to make sure she doesn’t eat anything off the ground. The muzzle is a great way of doing so.
Mishka means the world to me, and that’s why I want to protect her as much as I can.

Muzzle training is just one element of responsible dog ownership! When properly conditioned and fitted, dogs can eat, drink, pant, play and even chew on sticks! A muzzle helps keep everyone safe, especially and perhaps most importantly the dog who is wearing it. #muzzleup #muzzleupproject #dogsofnyc #responsible #gooddog #goodchoices #happydog #positivetraining #love #muzzleambassador #training #clickertraining #behaviormodification #dogsofinsta #instagood #doggo #pupper #baskerville #basketmuzzle #dogstagram #daytraining #shibainu #roughcollie #colliesofinstagram #shiba #collie #smartpuppy #dog http://ift.tt/2jXiMHa

Allow me to demonstrate a fascinating (I think anyway) combinations of 1) the learner should always CHOOSE to engage and 2) dogs communicate with their ENTIRE body, and dog body language is largely generalizable but ultimately dependent on the individual dog. . So here I’m working with Luna on wearing her lovely @bumas_muzzle. (She’s actually great about wearing it but I just like to practice this anyway.) . As you can see, she’s more than willing to shove her face in the muzzle but she starts leaning back and backing up when I go to close the loop around her head. At this point, I should have ended the session or gone back to just treating her for putting her face in the muzzle. Pushing our dogs too far or coercing them into doing something they don’t want to do is bad welfare! . But I SWEAR to you that I did not notice her backing away the first time. I was watching her tail wagging and thinking, Gosh, we’re doing a great job here! Well, my 8-year history with Luna has taught me that actually, her tail wag is not a good indicator of whether or not she’s okay in the moment. She tends to wag when she’s excited and excitement does not equal happy or okay! . (Why is she so uncomfortable putting the loop on when I just said she wears the muzzle just fine a second ago?! Well, I almost never put it on her outside - I usually put it on her in the house and then we go outside (or not). So this is a novel environment for this behavior and that’s why I think she is uncomfortable). . Anyway I finally noticed the second time when she took a more dramatic step back and tossed treats in the grass for her to snuffle, ending the session. We did some other training exercises that she did really well with, which is encouraging to me that I didn’t ruin her evening 😣 #positivereinforcement #forcefreeworks #muzzleupproject #muzzleup #muzzlesarecool #bumasmuzzle #positivereinforcementworks #dogbodylanguage #domorewithyourdog #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogbehavior #anxiousdog #aggresivedog https://www.instagram.com/p/B-gJVCcJOzg/?igshid=1i8rlof0votjt
