probably redid this recipe 5x to fine tune the chemistry according to all the research available before trying this. quite happy. here's how it keeps the porcelain translucency
big thank you to @emmalerae for the butterfly stegosaurus prints! one for me and one for another spring birthday in the fam! 🥳
worth the wait: bright splashes of color to distribute around the house in the form of quilted coasters from @creations-by-chaosfay! it's like having a pile of tactile joy!🌈🦄
when I ordered the cutest lil duck cup for my desk, I had no idea @alunimoon would doodle me a personal Danger Duck and I LOVE HIM. so stabby: can practically hear him quacking "do you wanna get cut?!" the cup finish is satiny and the quality is fantastic. the shape of his body is satisfying just to hold but also looks great full of knitting needles 😊
at the intersection of art and geology/chemistry is @muddypyro : I am so fascinated by the various glaze experiments and beautiful results! the cups are either *perfectly* round and friend-shaped, or super-interestingly dimpled and symmetrically pinched and as much fun to hold and turn over in the hand as to gaze upon.
very excited about this one, an attempt at lowering the coe (coefficient of expansion, aka the rate of a glaze recipe expanding and contracting upon firing, resulting in the amount of crazing [the cracks you'll find on many glazes]) on my og wood ash crystalline glaze with some oxide adjustments.
and it did so well being stable!
and was super polite with my jabba the hutt teapot which totally survived:
aaahhhhhh so pleased with this
so glad to be having success with the wood ash recipes!!
infatuated with this wood ash crystalline glaze and everything it does
update:
forgot to mention it's also great at keeping the porcelain translucent! so this glaze is truly a winner. going to try out different wood ash sources for the next glaze firing.
the new camera is doing great and i'll be dumping examples of recent work until the shop drop this weekend.
remember that Swamp Fire glaze? it did great on the new porcelain clay;
and more proof that my theory on using the clear liner as a break for runaway glaze has merit. it also provided some wonderful interactions;
what a wonderfully scummy crusty snot yellow as it hits the clear glaze!
and, naturally, there was a recipe alteration test and the results are a true delight. going to keep playing with this one;
just look at that deep green background flowing around and those big matte brick red crystals! yesss! having so much fun with these wood ash-based crystalline glazes. going to try collecting various types of wood this winter to test alternative effects based on wood type! [thinking home depot maybe has some scrap for cheap or free?]
got some great practice in today throwing larger with porcelain after watching some excellent examples online and adjusting the methods accordingly. only playing with 5-7 lb range now but working up as muscle memory takes hold. far more fun throwing this size all at once while not worrying so much about getting it thin enough for translucency!
three of these are closed forms which helps get that tippy top peak all long and wild. however, managed to walk away to make dinner after the last one before poking a hole to release the air 🙄 and coming back an hour later was this slumpy dump. remembered a trick in school about heating the form up again so the internal air can expand and puff out the shape back to where it should be, and it worked! i live by this heat gun to do so much with alterations, and here it yet again proves to be one of the best investments;
one of the winning new recipes will be joining the lineup for '24;
and still trying to decipher how the adjustments i made to this recipe also fucked with the macro crystals in such a feathery-wonderful way. so fuck yeah chemistry!
plus this one features bits of the violet flowers from a previous test!
not as much work with this glaze to be posted in the upcoming shop drop but more of this recipe feature sometime in January when there's another batch to glaze fire!
discovered this recipe loves playing with my clear liner!
and here's the magic dancing on one of a few cups that will be posted for sale soon;
this glaze brings me so much delight and soon you can feel the same!
this was part of a fantastic glaze firing reveal the night before Krampus and that included items with this rainbow wonder plus a few new wonderful recipes! there will be plenty of great shit being added for sale on my web shop soon! like for the new year!
we're talking lots of great drinking cups, yunomis and tea bowls and maybe a vase or few. updating more highlights here soon. genuinely hope everyone reading this survived the holidays so far and very soon you'll have something fantastic to buy with those gift cards your insufferable relatives unceremoniously gave you ;]
kiln is running smoothly despite waking up with a bolt of fear that some glazes were applied too thick [which some are just absolutely caked on thanks to 1am decisions] and it's gonna be a big mess 🫠. really need to work on not frantically glazing like this running trend
good news is everything but one smaller vase fit, so it's a nicely packed firing which will help cool slower and aid in crystallization extravaganza 💎
also, remember how i was lamenting about the last firing that revealed a lot of warping and dunting?
somehow, this test survived!
and with this, i made an ass-umption that the clear liner is also good at containing the flow of the crystalline glazes, so there's a lot of this going on right now with work. plus firing the tea set!
fingers crossed it's not a disaster and just a lot of great results, to which the shop will update with new work for sale in the days following the Grand Reveal ™
wondering what the average user base here, at least whoever sees this, has interest in. might even have a go making the winning choices using the tremendous collection [now ~1200 lbs/544 kg] of porcelain lying around that i've been playing with 🤷
also i will have my updated website live and ready to sell work online soon! so it's alright if you, like... for real want to buy something then. or now. no judgement 🤫
retaking all the pics thanks to fresh sleep and refined lighting arrangement!
in grabbing new shots, i wanted to highlight some of the best details of these glazes, particularly Swamp Fire.
this glaze keeps on giving, and in the next few firings i'll be working on blending the desirable effects of the OG recipe with the stability and better crystal development of the new rendition. with juuuust the right application thickness, a stark aquamarine fills the inner crystal while slapping on an outer ring of the same, making for some stunning contrast. could be as simple as adjusting the ramp holds with the original glaze... trial and time will provide
the kiln is now loaded up with greenware for a bisque firing tonight!
and it all fit quite nicely.
so yeah, was planning to glaze fire next Wednesday as it's clearly been a thing lately to fire on anniversaries and astrological milestones, but the weather forecast is growing more certain of the first decent windstorm this fall to happen then and i am not cool with the power going out during a 20+ hour run. so might shift that to Sunday or Monday instead. it's a lot of work mixing dozens of glazes each time so trying not to kill myself while also being impatient and needing more finished work. oh and the tungsten trioxide arrived yesterday so there will be a test for that coming up!
it's a very nice green-yellow in person and should produce psychedelic iridescent crystals in the right recipe! will be getting some molybdenum if this goes well, which acts like lead [a historically fantastic and potent flux with super cool glaze effects] but without the death included! need to beef up the bank account first though...
and since it's been all go big or gtfo lately, here's a serving bowl made a few days ago;
the kiln fills up so much faster when everything is bigger 😁
