In honor of (late) Royai week… an excerpt from a little thing I’ve been working on

Riza Hawkeye still felt like a child.

War criminals weren't supposed to feel like this... but she did. All she wanted to do was go back in time and change his mind, tell him to run while he could, tell him that it wasn't worth it, tell herself it wasn't worth it. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs, because maybe that would bring her a sense of peace. Maybe she would try to cry again. Perhaps if she screamed loud enough or cried hard enough, time would rewind and she would be back helping Roy with his weekly alchemy evaluations. Better yet, maybe she could somehow make it so that he never came into her life at all.

Riza Hawkeye still felt like a burden, and not only because of the lives she'd taken. That probably made her a monster, but it wasn't like she had the luxury of deciding those things. She missed her father dearly, even though he was the one that placed this burden on her in the first place. This sacred sin that he tied her down and watched her bleed for. She missed him so much, because maybe if he was alive now, he could make all of this stop.

But he wasn't. And it was only her. Her and Mr. Mustang that came into her life and made that giant godforsaken house somehow feel smaller. The same wide eyed, bright teenager that was once the only person who could make her feel like she wasn't insignificant was now looking at her with eyes drained of happiness. War torn and weak from a battle that to both of them, was never won. The only plausible way that she could have possibly felt more hopeless was if his eyes weren't looking towards her at all.

so when straight people ask me why I say I’m “queer” or “gay” instead of sharing my actual identity as a panromantic demisexual non-binary sapphic queer I just tell them “ok look, when you’re talking to someone who isn’t local and they ask you where you’re from and you either say the name of the largest city nearby or ‘town name, suburb of large nearby city’ so they can get some geographical context of where you’re located right, bc they’re probably not going to know the name of the little town you actually live in.”

but if you’re talking to a local you can say the name of your actual town bc they have a greater chance of knowing where/what that is.

ok well when I’m talking to a straight person I start with queer bc chances are they aren’t as familiar with the context of all the little towns in that big queer city and need gps (gay positioning system) to find me.

if I’m talking to another queer person and I say I live in a suburb of gay city in a town called panromantic on the demisexual side of the tracks which is in the county of queer and I live off the intersection of non-binary and sapphic, they’d probably be able to find me with little to no problems, make sense?

Watching how two dogs who love each other will sometimes still nip each other on the ear, bug them while they sleep, etc... watching how cats will snuggle with their buddy all day and then paw-smack 'em in the face, chase them, play-fight...

Makes me, as a fellow social mammal, feel better about my urge to be incredibly annoying to another human sometimes. Like, yeah. Of course I wanna bug you. Of course it's fun to annoy you. We're social creatures and annoyance can be part of play, something we all need. And I watch these dogs who get their ears nipped, cats who get smacked out of a nap, and despite BEING annoyed, they don't stop loving their packmate. After they finish play-fighting, they're back to snuggling and grooming and sleeping together. BEING annoyed is also just part of being in a social group and having relationships... and that's okay. It doesn't erase love or necessarily make them mad or affect them in the long term... a loved one being annoyed with me is a temporary feeling that's normal for social creatures. An annoyance that wouldn't be possible WITHOUT that love
