come what may (i'll still stay)
the sequel to if it feels like a home
Back in New York City after the whirlwind Cape Cod weekend that resulted in their reunion, Betty and Jughead learn how to be a couple again.
chapter one: august
Seven years. It’s how long they’d been apart. Within weeks, a number that had once signified what felt like a vast eternity started to instead feel...arbitrary, laughable. A once-insurmountable barrier that they had managed to overcome and now laugh in the face of.
The end of July was a haze of sticky, addicting reunion sex and Betty dragging Jughead to places in New York he’d never been, his head ducked under the covers to hide from Betty’s squeals after admitting he had yet to visit. It quickly gave way to August, heat rising off the dirty concrete sidewalks in practically-visible waves, mornings spent wiping sweat off brows and leaning down the subway platform in the hopes of glimpsing the bright lights of the A train, perpetually running late for work as a combination of MTA delays and because too often they stayed wrapped up in bed with each other ten minutes too long.

MEET THE ARCHIES: JUGHEAD JONES
“I just wanna make great music with my friends and have fun,” Jughead says nonchalantly with a shrug. “So who cares if we don’t book this gig.”
Veronica rolls her eyes and gives him an accusatory glare. “You’re just saying that because you don’t want to haul your drum set around.”
“Maybe a little bit,” he grins, “but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.”

Graffitists hit dozens of NYC subway cars
Tumblr media
New York's subway trains were once highly contested, moving art galleries, completely skinned with overlapping coats of graffiti (think of the opening credits of Welcome Back, Kotter).
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Mmm3KTa601s
NYC declared war on graffiti in 1972, but it wasn't until 1984 that the Clean Trains movement took hold (previous attempts to erase graffiti with acid solutions literally started to dissolve the cars).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_New_York_City_Subway#Graffiti
Until last night. Graffiti crews covered two dozen MTA cars with top-to-bottom "burner" murals not seen since graffiti's glory days, spanning multiple, adjacent cars.
https://www.thecity.nyc/2020/12/2/22149612/two-dozen-subway-cars-struck-in-overnight-graffiti-storm
Writing in The City, Jose Martinez offers tantalyzing details of the feat - executed between 1 and 5AM in tunnels and out-of-service storage tracks, in areas that the NYPD nominally patrols.
The burners decorate cars on the 1, 6, M, G, Q and 42nd Shuttle. The scope really comes out in this video posted to the nycgraff.head Instagram account.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CIN8iJvpLMy/
Martinez's descriptions give a sense of the pieces: "...Its first five cars covered in spray-painted flames, mushrooms, tags and a bare-breasted pot-smoking character with a resemblance to Betty Boop."

Betty's never late- until she is. At least she has the help of a handsome stranger. || ao3
Me? Delivering a Christmas gift to @satelliteinasupernova in march? Far more likely than you’d think.
Betty didn't mind the subway.
She hated that the L train seemed to always be running late or under construction, she hated watching people struggling to insert their card, she hated ignoring panhandlers when she barely had enough money to survive herself (and she definitely didn't have the money to buy snacks for all of the struggling people around her), but every flaw the MTA had couldn't hold a candle to the stranger who sat across from her Monday through Friday morning.
Every workday, Betty made her way from her small studio apartment to the station in Bushwick, forgoing the more direct L train for the M before taking the 6 to her end destination. Despite never talking, Betty always sat with her book, trying to focus on the characters on the pages, even if the handsome stranger sat directly in her line of vision.
Some days he read, others, he worked on his laptop or wrote in a composition notebook. Every morning, he offered Betty a timid smile that she gladly returned.

New York City's coronavirus disinfection program: Subway trains to be blasted with ultraviolet-C rays every night to kill the virus
(Natural News) The transit authority in New York City is going to install germicidal ultraviolet lights in the city’s trains to see if they can help city officials disinfect the subway cars of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) calls the use of UV light “another aggressive step” in making sure that New York’s public trains don’t...

six sentence(ish) sunday
(more like six CLAUSE sunday am i right?)
because this weekend i got some inspiration between podcast editing sessions and finally started shaping the still-untitled second installment of “if it feels like a home”
The end of July was a haze of sticky, addicting reunion sex and Betty dragging Jughead to places in New York he’d never been, his head ducked under the covers to hide from Betty’s squeals after admitting he had yet to visit. Mysterious metal towers spotted all over New York City tunnels and bridges... surveillance devices?
(Natural News) Residents of New York City have been both confused and awestruck lately at the sight of large, mysterious metal towers that are popping up all over the city. According to CBS2’s Dave Carlin, even those on the MTA board in charge of the towers are unable to explain why the towers are being...
