Glee writers did so much dumb stuff (which I can say because I stuck with that show for years and I've earned it) but the dumbest thing they did was continue all the way to the end to try to make us care about, let alone root for, a mediocre middle aged white guy and his love life. His only storylines that mattered were the ones directly tied with the kids' storylines and those were basically all some level of problematic. But they just kept giving him storylines anyway and making characters gush about how he was the best teacher to ever grace the public school system because he supported art programming and I guess accepted his students' sexualities and gender identities at the bare minimum level without actually taking any action to support them? And that he, like a superhero, was willing to marry a woman even though she had OCD and *gasp* needed him to wait a little bit before having sex with her? They were just like "This is one of our main protagonists whether you guys like it or not so be sad that his fiance left him at the altar damn it!"

Just saying.

As much as I love glee fandom it is also one of the fandoms that I feel most detached from and in a lot of ways it comes down to how often the fandom misrepresents the source material like one big gripe people always have is the whole “mr shue’s best friend is a 19 year old” thing which simply isn’t the case? Like four episodes into this show they establish Finn’s relationship with Shue as him leaning on the father he never had and as much as the show forgets itself that relationship does not change. They’re incredibly consistent with updating and evolving their relationship—the scenes of Shue handing over the club to him and asking him to call him by first name are particularly touching in that regard—but it always at its core remains the father and son relationship both of them were denied: Finn by his father’s death and Shue by Terri’s false pregnancy. There is so much to be critical of Will’s character for but the two things I really resent the fandom for souring are 1) his relationship with Finn and 2) Matthew Morrison’s performances cause seriously you guys are so fucking mean about that man
