there is interesting johndean subtext and insinuations across kripke era, usually through an antagonist insinuating parent-child sexual violence in order to exert dominance over dean. this type of mockery exploits that ambiguous relationship between john and dean and reminds dean that he never had a normal relationship with his father, and that makes him gross and wrong. it doesn't actually matter in the end whether john was sexually abusive to dean. the core of their relationship was damning enough: dean was made to take the place of john's wife—to comfort john and raise sam—while simultaneously being his son. the codependent nature of their relationship implies the incest that underscores their dynamic. again, this is regardless of what literally occurred between dean and john because there is enough doubt toward the nature of their relationship that multiple antagonists can use it against them.

sonwife, brotherhusband—dean is stuck in a liminal space between family and lover and is unable to put his feet firmly on just one side and instead has to accept both together or abandon both together. he doesn't get to have a relationship with his family without it being simultaneously incestuous. he plays the role of wife to john and mother to sam as mary's replacement; he therefore becomes more than a son and transcends the boundaries of the familial into the incestuous. it's baked into the dynamic and he can't hope to escape the liminality in which he's stuck without abandoning his entire family altogether.

this ambiguous relationship is further acted out with sam, where people perceive them as lovers rather than brothers; where their mutual devotion trumps, neglects, and disallows any other close relationship outside each other; where their physical closeness is viewed through an unusually sexual lens despite no literal sex acts between them taking place on screen. once again dean is stuck in a liminal space, paralleling the ambiguous and uncertain relationship he had with john.

in the end, sex (and sexual violence) is just a symbol of this codependency and uncertainly incestuous dynamic. sex acts in kripke era end up being symbolic: misinterpretations of sam and dean's relationship; accusations of sexual violence; literal, on-screen sexual moments between the brothers and someone else. it's a literary device that highlights the incestuous themes of the show. dean hand-picks women for sam to fuck because it allows dean to be symbolically part of sam's sex life. henricksen accuses john of raping dean because it is a symbol of the unhealthy, codependent relationship dean had with his father. the samulet stays on during sex because sam is symbolically integral to dean's sexual gratification (seen too in the way both dean and cassie in 1.13 appear to kiss the amulet at least once in the dark room). sex is used to signify more than what's literally on the screen, and the connections between the literal sex acts and the blurred lines of dean's familial relationships allow for a reading of incest between both john and dean and sam and dean.

it never mattered whether johndean or samdean had a sexual relationship in the canon because that was never the point. the point is the liminality that permeates the narrative. sam, dean, and john all stand upon a threshold between acceptable and taboo. the point of it all is the doubt and anxiety, the are-they-aren't-they that is never answered. the absence of incest within the text invites the understanding that the incest was, in fact, always there.

how reze is handled through the bomb devil arc is so special because despite multiple of her presentations conflicting, they conflict simultaneously & resolve themselves into a constant direction. i don't believe this direction ever really alters which is why i scratch my head when i see people discuss reze's "redemption arc" because... i don't think she ever has one? csm is a non normative story / she doesn't need a redemption arc in order to conflict w. the protag & find herself in the alleyway again -- this is cyclical, her whole arc is. she's so facade pilled her dialogue re: this State of hybridhood / how she handles her autonomy in this state frames itself along new contexts as we progress through the arc. i dislike it when i see reze be woobified (for lack of a better word) since her character is one who strives for autonomy through denji (the protagonist / simultaneously the narrative layer that she translates herself through).

the most overt of her actions are both Facade & expression of her agency [the tongue scene for eg] & tbh she's insane for that.

Oh man, I get second hand embarrassment and complete dread with some of those forum comments. And even if they’re not being rude, some people can be so demanding and entitled, like the author isn’t a person who’s putting in a ridiculous amount of work in the first place to write THEIR story. With wide eyes Kyleigh watched as the food was brought to their table, then came the other wolves. She knew they must have been important by how they spoke to Caspian but they were very polite to her. Kyleigh was more than happy to give the prince his time with the council, glancing around the room. She had only been to one or two fancy dinners in her life so she was trying her best to be a proper lady while there.

As soon as the deer was placed in front of her Kyleigh felt a lot more relaxed, thanking Cas before she began to make her own plate. Whatever the cooks had done with the deer smelled amazing, the half lycan digging right in. She didn't notice anything was wrong until she saw Caspian get up and frowned. Eating a few more bites she wiped her mouth off with her napkin and excused herself, wanting to go make sure he was okay.

"There you are!" She said softly when she found him, a small smile on her face. "Is everything alright? Or are you still full from the fish earlier?" If he was that was alright with her. Kyleigh could always come back later and ask for something else to eat.

Still on my Dreamer Trilogy reread. Don't know if anyone has pointed this out before (probably don't care) but Bryde-- dreamt by Ronan to be the answer to all of his problems, to guide him, to be the father figure he lost, to be all the things Ronan feels like he's lacking, solid in the way Ronan never can be-- is like DEFINITELY a conglomerate of all of the men Ronan looks up to or has looked up to throughout his life. ESPECIALLY Gansey, I think. The way he's described as looking like a storybook hero with features suspiciously like Gansey's and this quote: "There was something about the way he stood there now with his hands in the pockets of his jacket, his expression expectant, that made him seem familiar. Every so often Ronan felt like he almost recognized him, and then it went away again." Like, Gansey has been such a constant in Ronan's life for years now, possibly the only thing really keeping him moored to shore, and now he's gone off without Ronan (remember if you will the jealousy of Gansey taking Adam to that party without him) and Ronan is UNMOORED. In need of DIRECTION. In need of CONNECTION. And hails from the sky the perfect storybook hero to push his limits, to take him on an adventure, to take the weight of problem-solving and decision-making and future-planning off of Ronan's shoulders because he doesn't want it and never has. Of course, Bryde also has a lot of Niall and Declan in him, along with whatever extra spice Ronan’s subconscious fed into him. Bryde has the mysterious, almost bland disposition of Declan while also having the penchant for danger and storytelling (ONE OF THE FIRST TIMES HE COMES TO RONAN IN DREAMS HE SAYS "ARE YOU GOING TO BE QUIET?") of their father (of course Declan also has things things but fuck if Ronan knows that or is going to acknowledge it). I'd suspect there's a bit of Adam in him too, in Bryde's mistrustfulness and secret-keeping........ much to think about . Much indeed
