thinking about eddie, pushing 60, family man, hair line in full retreat, angry again (always) at a system that only seems designed to fuck up, to leave people behind, deciding to write one last album, a return to the sound that start it all.

(says it’s his last album, but steve rolls his eyes, says, we’ll all believe that when we see it.)

(eddie sniffs, says, well i’m an artist you know how fickle we are.)

and thinking about steve, on the edge of retirement, who never followed eddie on tour, only came to shows + weekends when work allows, finally coming with him this time.

with bean, too, home schooled by steve because robin + madchen offered to keep them for a few months but they’ll be damned if their dads are off touring america + they don’t get in on this action.

and anyway: this has always been steve’s dream: a family, a road trip, and it’s smaller, a different time line, older, but like the woman said, years ago — he’d do it all again, everything, even the monsters.

Me explaining in terms of strictly how I read canon I think Nahida not severely punishing the Sages is just meant to convey that Nahida, even when wronged, is not a very vengeful or harsh person and makes the choice to be kind instead, but in my mind I have this idea of a Nahida interpretation which elaborates on that where her self punishing tendencies extend to her being someone who internally downplays her own experiences constantly, and as a result has a hard time feeling she’s allowed or justified in placing a lot of blame on the Sages for what they did to her So while she is following her own philosophies regarding teaching lessons/wisdom/etc in how to handle the Sages and genuinely doesn’t want to be really angry or punishing because of who she is as a person, her decision is also influenced by the fact she’s basically blocked herself out of grappling with how to handle people who hurt her by blaming herself for said hurt instead as a coping mechanism. And like this is all just me being insane about Nahida Trauma and not something explicitly implied in canon but also I really do think this isn’t a far stretch from her canon characterization especially when my vision isn’t to conclude that Nahida needs to be angry and vengeful but she should extend the kindness she shows others to herself and also every day I get tormented thinking about she was the mental equivalent of an average human child when the Sages found her and how they basically specifically discarded her for being a child and the idea of how Nahida would pick up on + internalize that and eventually need time to unlearn it

a detective who has a partner🔍 and a partner💕 who are friends so the three of them end up doing a lof things together and the detective refers to them as "my partners" and doesn't realise this makes everyone think they're polyamorous (they do end up polyamorous by the end of the story)

The idea that Tommy, a closeted gay man who was desperately trying to fit in in a hyper macho and discriminatory environment, isn't allowed to have any growth from when he was over compensating and was a dick to Chim really pisses me off. He literally had canonical growth to the point he was going for drinks with Chim and Hen in Bobby Begins Again and they got him a fancy leaving cake.

Why isn't he allowed to grow and be better? Because he's white? Because he "gets in the way of buddie"? Because no one is allowed to say and change at all over a decade?

Like this is a queer fandom and I'd bet a lot of money that a ton of people in this fandom said and did things they weren't proud of when they were younger, especially before they came out so they could try and hide it.

I know this is quite a young fandom too but like, it was literally only a decade ago when "gay" was an insult at school and doing anything that could be get you accused of being gay was fucking social suicide. You guys have no idea how lucky you are that people at least get called out for that shit now cause they didn't when I was a kid. I would have done almost anything to just be ignored, let alone accepted, rather than being openly bisexual.

So yeah, I think Tommy is allowed to fucking change as a person because Bobby, Chim and Hen came into his life and allowed him to stop repressing. Stop being such fucking assholes. You aren't any better than him, and frankly the way some of you behave makes the way Tommy acted when he was first in the show look like a fucking saint. Touch some grass.

Dethvanity is really funny to me conceptually as an episode because you can see how little they had to make the characters insecure about for the bit. They swing for obvious lowblow choices with Pickle' baldness and Nathan's weight and even those require some suspension of disbelief because ok. Sure. Nathan '(said extremely proudly) never skipped a meal in my life!' Explosion is insecure about being a big man now. Nathan *guy who everyone thinks is smoking hot 99% of the time* Explosion is a tiny bit larger than usual and is insecure about it now. Lol. Lmao even.

But anyway then we hit Skwisgaar and Toki and there's like NOTHING to swing for, you can see them going uhhh ok Skwis doesn't sleep he probably drinks a lot of coffee, and Toki? long time no chat, folks. it's been a hot minute since i've posted anything music related -- it's been a tough time in my personal life, and creativity has not come easy to me in this particular regard.

when reading @greatunironic's now classic series the most remarkable thing, i was particularly haunted by the mention of this song. this is the second to last song on the album, immediately followed by the bombshell of "i wore his jacket" which effectively was eddie outing himself, and i wanted to write a song in which eddie could feasibly be singing about a woman he loves. (he's not, but the listener did not know that.) enter, the country music convention of telling a story about other people to talk around your own life.

i'm really fond of this one -- it was a nice challenge to present this duality from a perspective that is not my own. please enjoy. lyrics behind the cut:

"Will the Wise" is the first track off Eddie's third album in @greatunironic's seminal steddie fic the most remarkable thing. i thought that was a fascinating choice of an opener. will of course becomes a professional writer in the most remarkable thing 'verse, so even beyond the experience of having been queer in hawkins, he and eddie would have a fair amount to bond over once they started talking.

this is meant to be a song where eddie really stretches his songwriting muscles and tries to force himself to write about something, anything other than steve, BUT i do feel compelled to add that i think eddie is really impressed that will at least tried to confess romantic feelings for mike, because eddie still finds the prospect of doing the same with steve entirely unimaginable. i think will would probably not describe himself as brave, but that eddie very much sees him that way. also, surviving everything will's survived is arguably metal as hell.

this is a song about queer friendships and creative friendships and, metatextually, about so admiring a friend for something they do (transmute painful emotions into making something) that you kind of miss that you are doing the same thing! also a lot of things rhyme with "wise" so of course that helped.

(i also don't own a cricut so i can't really add anything rn) if i could, i would have bound it to look exactly like an old beaten up and loved paperback. i do love the two bookmarks, especially because its three fics bound together. you can't see in these pictures but the end paper is a shiny silver and theres a hidden blue endpaper that adds a fun pop of color when you're flipping through!

this whole process was a bit more difficult than i thought it would be and the finished copy has some errors but overall i'm super happy with how it turned out. the only thing i wish i could change is that the book won't stay open on its own but honestly it's comfier to hold in my hand!

fonts: book text and titles is garamond, excerpts are baskerville, and section titles are didot (i took a lot of typeface/general design inspiration from the mountain goats' all hail west texas vinyl except i think of this fic as blue and silver not yellow)
