The popularity of dog breeds can vary by region and over time. The American Kennel Club (AKC) releases an annual list of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, which is often used as a reference. However, please note that rankings might have changed since then.

here's another hot take. i dont think toy breeds are at all unpopular but you dont see a lot of dogblrs with toy dogs bc of demographics. toy dogs really do tend to be owned by older people and i feel that a lot of younger dog people regardless of their goals with dogs tend to really prefer larger breeds. I'm not passing any judgment tho, i like quite a few large breeds but i just like small dogs more

Owning a pet is a fabulous and rewarding experience. But every animal and their needs are different, so how can you make sure you’re ready for a new addition to your family and your home and that you choose the right one for you? Our tips on how to choose the right pet are here to help…
Say goodbye to preconceived ideas
You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you. Every pet has its own personality and certain breeds of dogs often have strong traits – for example Jack Russell terriers can need a lot of exercise and play to stop boredom setting in and shih tzus require lots of grooming. If you have children look for a friendly, confident dog rather than focussing on a particular breed.
Most people think that all small pets are great for children but it isn’t always the case. Some pets, including hamsters and chinchillas, are nocturnal which means that when the kids want to play, their pets are snoozing happily and won’t appreciate being disturbed.
Pets like gerbils and mice are quick and agile so it’s difficult for children to handle them without squeezing too hard. And rabbits are prey animals and don’t always enjoy being picked up and cuddled.
On the other hand less popular pets like rats can actually make great pets and love social interaction with people. So think about what you want from your small pet and do some research before you take one on.

Dungeon Meshi - Kobolds and Werewolfs
Translations given by a helpful anon .
Observations and TL note under the cut.
TL note by anon: * basal dog breeds: not sure how scientifically sound this is (only did a cursory search to confirm I was using the right term, because normal dictionaries only translate genshu as "purebred" and it didn't make any sense in this context ^^") but they're a number of specific breeds that are not exactly ancient but they did differentiate earlier than most other dog breeds - shiba are among these obviously.
---
A few more observations of my own:
On another version of the kobolds from daydream hour 2 (slightly different from "The complete Daydream Hour") Ryoko Kui Mentions "Jackals, African Wild Dogs or wolves" which I think its interesting.
I don't know much about DnD so I thought it was strange most Kobolds showed up as lizard people when I searched them on google and I learned that Kobolds are popularized as dogs in japan due to D&D first edition describing them as having dog faces. This was the post that first made me aware of that.

If you like the idea of having a pet but can’t deal with the grooming and shedding of a traditional pet, then you might want to consider non shedding dogs. Certain breeds of dog simply do not shed their fur, or they shed very little, which has earned them the “non shedding” description. These pets are often chosen by owners who have a slight allergy to pet dander and also by those who simply don’t have the time or energy to clean fur from the furniture, carpets, and clothing. Read on to learn about the most popular breeds of non shedding dogs.
