Because I could only have 12 options, honorary mention: The Trojan War (Cassandra)
This is not about the music, your favourite song, or anything. This is literally which song in the album has the best/weirdest/most interesting plot.
If you think I got one of the plots wrong, that's fine. You can let me know if you can be nice about it, but if you want to be an ass, keep it to yourself.
Actual song titles if you need a reminder below the cut:
The Visitors
Head Over Heels
When All is Said and Done
Soldiers
I Let the Music Speak
One of Us
Two for the Price of One
Slipping Through My Fingers
Like an Angel Passing Though My Room
Should I Laugh Or Cry
The Day Before You Came
Under Attack

since baekhyun knows how to make scented candles, he creates one for you as a birthday present with your favorite fragrances.
every entry in mark’s diary involves fond thoughts about you.
taemin kisses you more than his cat kkoongie on a daily basis so let that sink in. his smooch obsession is getting out of hand.
lucas, having giant fingers after all, learns how to knit in order to make you a warm scarf. he’s still a bit clumsy with it and had to call kun for advice, but the result is surprisingly proper and quickly becomes your favorite item. it’s a little huge but well, he thinks in his dimensions. lucas’ next project is a beanie.
ten overwhelms you with pet names. in fact, he seemingly seems to come up with a new one each day.
kai is a candlelight dinner, rose petals and music kinda guy. he does every old-school thing in the book.
taeyong can cuddle endlessly in bed. he just doesn’t wanna leave.
lucas gladly shares his sweaters. they’re ginormous so, perfect cuddle material.
baekhyun is already a fool. so — when he falls in love, he becomes an even bigger fool. or, the contrary happens: he becomes dead silent around his partner because he’s so enthralled. he can take this more seriously than you think.
mark likes to write little cards and many many texts to express his love.
lucas is the type who can help you put on your jeans when they were shrinking a bit too much in the dryer. he’s pretty sexy like that and things can get really touchy.
cheesy fucking kai, and there’s only one guy who would do this, has actually lowered himself over a puddle once so you would have a bridge. brushed it off like a daily workout rep.
not one shower missed without baekhyun joining you. yes, it’s not always sexy time, he likes it when you shampoo his hair and whisper sweet nothings. and obviously: it’ll all devolve to a laughing fit.
taeyong is the type who wants to be proposed to.
taemin will get a motorcycle license and take you for a frequent ride. he loves getting those kind of back hugs.
both ten and lucas are great at making bracelets. wayv’s dorm is fully equipped with charms, strings, and pearls, so expect matching ones for you.
we’ve seen it, that one’s his favorite move. kai wraps his hand around your shoulder when you walk together.
mark will ALWAYS share his melon.
making you swoon on a DVD evening is lucas’ favorite hobby. he will buy you the most sugary-sweet romance movies. he will often browse streaming sites to select the latest sentimental plots. all these dramas seem to have a male lead who is suspiciously tall and lanky.
if you allow him, taeyong customizes your white tees with his cute drawings.
since taemin swims in money thanks to his profession as the god of kpop (yes, this is a registered job name because i say so), he can fulfill you any wish. he’s stingy and pouty when the shinee hyungs can pay, and the motherfucker baekhyun is even richer since his albums have been taking off so he opens his mochi wallet when superm is gathered, but you... are a different case. taemin will humbly empty his entire pockets when he overhears you gushing over something. there’s a voice in his mind going: must splurge!!
mark loves christmas, you establish an annual tradition to stage a whole couple evening.
baekhyun likes to play charades and especially do karaoke with you. he’s always cutely wiggling his butt and dances like a drunk uncle. he hits the high notes anyway and makes sure you score 100 points.
taeyong can make out with you while at the same time making sure that the milk doesn’t get burned on the stove. kiss’n’stirr multitask tyong alert. gotta make sure the cocoa is served in time, you know.
all the members enjoy playing board games. yep, imagine the fun and sheer chaos.
lucas has the funniest laugh ever indeed. he’ll react to all your jokes, no matter how lame they might be. intensely reassuring.
taemin’s hand is basically glued to yours.
taeyong and mark are the kinds of boyfriends that spoil their partner with skincare. fancy a nice face massage with a nice fragrant oil?
baekhyun has been baking heart-shaped pizzas ever since you started dating. he just can’t make them round anymore.
mark will join you on anything you’re currently bingewatching.
kai sometimes — only half-jokingly — goes down on both knees bowing forward with his hands on the ground just to show how much he wants to thank you. in case you didn’t notice: this guy treats you like a deity.
ten usually gets confused glances from the other members whenever he gets the current date wrong: he simply loses track of time with you.
lucas makes a habit of buying you flowers every other week. but on unpredictable occasions, and he arranges them in places you’d never expect.
taemin will build you a weird-looking snowman to make you laugh, and give it an even stranger name. ten will build one that looks like you. kai doesn’t build snowmen, he just stands there challenging you to throw snow balls at him.
mark will hang out with you at the beach constantly bringing his guitar. he’ll serenade you all the time.
returning from three months of touring, baekhyun has once climbed your balcony when your parents were in the other room. yep, he was that desperate to see you. somebody give this man a rope and helmet.
taeyong writes down heartfelt confessions on 365 folded slips of paper so you can open one every day. your reactions will range from ‘awwh!’ to straight-up tears.
ten does regular couple yoga with you. a mildly challenging form, not the circus acrobat version. he’ll do the difficult parts anyway. you can pretzel this guy up, he’ll do anything to make you laugh.
when it rains you hook your arm around his, and lucas always holds the umbrella. even the wildest gush of wind can’t make it turn inside out. you arrive home entirely dry. xuxi is so cute, he’s also a great source of cooling shadow in the summer without even trying.
taemin’s skinship overdrive doesn’t stop with endless hand-holding, back hugs and kisses. he wants to lay down in your lap whenever he can. he looks damn pretty with his hair splaying there. if you work on your laptop, you can pretty much count to ten and he’s already nestled there.
kai does pushups with you on his back. it’s a staple. each time he does one, he says ‘i love you’. he increases his count every day.
NSFW
it’s no secret that taeyong is great at acting or pulling off any outfit and costume. expect roleplay of the finest kind — literally. he looks good in a firefighter uniform. you’ll be burning up pretty much automatically.
taemin can’t keep his tongue in. it’s terrible. he’s always in the mood for head. his sloppy noises are the absolute worst, it turns you on way too fast.
lucas had some major problems finding condoms that fit him.
ten and taemin are so switchy, they have an unresolved power struggle going on. begs for a dominant third party to help them out.
kai owns expensive latex gear.
baekhyun may be the king of vocals and breath technique, but if you push him far enough he does get hoarse.
taemin often jokes how kai will one day break his dick from fucking too hard.
meanwhile, mark’s dick is already falling off – from fucking too often. this guy has some major hormones going for him. no surprise, a guy who can promote in four kpop groups at the same time is a stamina king.
taeyong likes eating pussy with another party involved. three’s a crowd my friend. sometimes it’s taemin who unleashes his spit waterfall power, sometimes it’s baekhyun who preoccupies himself with nibbling at the inner thigh while taeyong digs in.
taemin owns the most underwear.
mark takes valerian drops because he is so nervous in bed. it never really goes away, it’s his nature.
taeyong keeps a lube collection. a different flavor for all occasions. he likes associating certain scents with specific body parts.
kai has a heels kink. he literally goes wild over it.
taemin likes to have sex with favorite glasses on.
taeyong and kai are the most likely to cry during sex. baekhyun as well if you rough him up enough.
mark gets rock hard the fastest, followed by kai. he’s a grower.
taeyong gets the best inspiration for a song when he gets a casual dick riding.
taemin watches extremely x-rated erotic thrillers and bdsm flicks that are heavy on the plot. he gets more invested in the characters and actors than you think. since his japanese is amazing? of course he also owns a giant 90s hentai collection.
when he’s jerking off, baekhyun chokes himself. a) because he’d make too much noise otherwise and b) because asphyxiation is his favorite thing.
kai feels pleasure in his every cell. he cums the hardest. and, as you can expect, his body expresses it the most extremely, accurately, passionately. if you’ve seen it even once, you’ll never look at him the same again.
taemin has less experience than his discography claims, but more than you’d think. he researches sexual techniques as well. you can brace yourself.
mark has not just a tiger inside, but a freak inside, waiting to be unleashed.
sex while gaming is a go-to activity for baekhyun.
lucas has the best stamina when it comes to getting head.
taemin throws his head back during sex. and no, he doesn’t T-pose. i’m kidding — of course he does. but only when he’s on his back.
taeyong tends to grip a pillow when he cums.
or he humps one when he’s by himself.
ten has the best taste in sexy time playlists.
baekhyun has the best taste in singing his own playlist along.
oh, the things kai has bought at a gas station at 3AM.
baekhyun sucks strap the best. he can open his mouth the widest, drools a lot, and makes the best noises unsurprisingly.
how to turn on lee taemin? he likes getting slapped.
since he’s the most avid and most diverse eater, lucas’ sperm tastes the best. he’s shove 50 fruits into his system just to give you a sweet experience.
mark is absolutely a starfish.
kai wears fishnet tops if you fancy it.
curiously, baekhyun out of all people doesn’t announce when he’s cumming. you’ll hear it, though.
taeyong’s dildo collection is one for the books.
taemin has visited a pro dominatrix a couple times. needless to say, he was the #1 favorite client at the dungeon. having fully submerged into a fantasy world, taemin was one whip crack away from falling in love with the mistress. but then covid happened and the venue closed.
mark’s dick looks really pretty.
taemin can grind on the strap at every humanly possible angle. he’s almost always ready to take it. he carries a prep kit.
kai — that fucker — knows how to make you wet the most with his bare hands. prepare for the thigh ride of your life, too.
taeyong, baekhyun, and taemin have the best arches. kai is coming for the top three as well. ten’s arch is so good, it can’t be considered one anymore.
baekhyun knows every adult movie out there. theoretically, nothing can shock him. in reality, he melts in your hands.
taeyong is so sexually active with you, he has quit eating garlic.
kai will exploit your muscle kink in any way he can.
taemin, being a devil, has that one button on his phone that he can press when you go out for dinner. he’s OBSESSED with getting you off. once you head home, it’s basically running down your thighs.
ten has once opened a condom with scissors to scare away a date that grew weird on him by the time it got to the do.
lucas is too tall for doing missionary normally.
this will surprise nobody: mark is great at constantly keeping up the dirty talk.
baekhyun’s car is sort of like a brothel on wheels. he can’t count how many times he got down and dirty in there. he cleans it all up by himself.
kai can technically grip you the hardest but he’s the gentlest and great at caressing the whole body.
taemin has the easiest time saying what precisely he wants. he is also the best people reader — most your wishes he can pretty intuit. taemin observes your interests well.
ten likes his hair pulled and makes angelic noises when you do so.
baekhyun likes camgirls and erotic chats with strangers online. he spends a lot of money for nsfw internet encounters.

We woke up one morning, and fell a little further down - a Godspeed You! Black Emperor retrospective - Part 6: Asunder, Sweet, and Other Distress
One of the more interesting aspects of Efrim Menuck’s many projects is that most if not all of them are taper friendly. This results in many tracks coming to be heard for many years before they are ever brought into the studio. Every track on Allelujah! was already heard in concert long before they were finalized. One of the most famous tracks of these live recordings was a cut called Behemoth, a mammoth track introduced in 2012 that lasted for up to 45 minutes per performance. Even for Godspeed, a band that was well known for long compositions, this was ambitious and the fanbase immediately took note. Three years later, the track was split into four pieces for ease of navigation, and released as Asunder, Sweet, and Other Distress, the most tightly written and heaviest of Godspeed’s output.
When I say that this album flows as one giant track, I mean it. The A side of the vinyl record release even has a locked groove so the illusion of being one continuous track is maintained somewhat.
The first part, Peasantry or Light Inside Of Light, begins with a booming swung drum section. A moment of feedback leads us into a massive wall of fuzzy distorted guitars. This is where Godspeed shows off it’s chops at making heavy music. It feels like a towering monster threatening to swallow you whole. About halfway through this section, there is an honest to god guitar solo. For any other post-rock band, I’d accuse them of losing the plot, but it works in this case. It’s the closest Godspeed come to traditional rock songwriting. It’s probably the most melody heavy output of their careers so far. For such a loud track, it’s actually quite pretty; Godspeed does a good job at building melodies into and out of the bed of noise that they created at the beginning of the track. The track explodes at the end, which is useful for what comes next.
The second part, Lamb’s Breath, is the patented Godspeed dread, but magnified a hundred fold. If you think the first part was drony, you ain’t heard nothing. This section almost sounds like a SUNN O))) song. Interestingly for this genre, rather than a build up, this feels more like an extended cool down. This transitions perfectly into the third part, “Asunder, sweet” which is a build that begins with a pinging sonar in the right channel, and gradually increases from there. A double bass stalks around in the back of the track, a predator threatening to eat you. The flutes and violins add a layer of cacophonous noise to the track, breaking up the relative stability of the bass drone.
The final part of this odyssey, Piss crowns are trebled, kicks off with a violin. It’s difficult to tell where this track begins and Asunder, Sweet ends. The two blend into each other almost flawlessly. The drone present here feels like some of Melvin’s slower work, or even the specific type of ambience found in some Boris songs, particularly the 70 minute epic Flood. In either case, the drums are what truly define this track, combing back in with a swinging beat much like the first part, but somehow even darker. When Moya comes in with his patented screwdriver guitar, the track evolves into a guitar based piece that would not sound out of place on Yanqui U.X.O or Slow Riot. Godspeed is beginning to reference themselves, and much like Moya before it, this song too speeds up towards the end. Falling off a cliff in much the same way as that track. However, it feels so much more epic, what with the violins sawing away in the background. This goes double for the final section, where the track balloons to twice its previous size, and one riff takes over the entire composition. The drums pound like a blacksmith at his anvil, the guitars wail like banshees, the violins barely sound like themselves anymore. It is a fitting, explosive ending to one of Godspeed’s most epic, explosive tracks.
Asunder, Sweet, and Other Distress is not the album I would recommend to the first time Godspeed listener. It is not their best. However, if you are familiar with this band, if you are familiar with what they do and what they have accomplished, it is a worthy listen. It is a unique piece in their discography, taking the long form approach to the extreme; and yet, it exhibits a tightness and clarity of purpose that is unmatched. It is a clarity that they would continue to elaborate on in their next album, though in a lighter and softer direction.

only as alone as i wanna be | [bh]
A/N: Well instead of working on my Peter Parker writing challenge fic, Billy Hargrove won’t leave my brain alone. So here we go.
I’ve retconned the Billy & Max relationship a bit for this, so it’s a lil au. Sorry!
Please let me know if you think I should continue!
Pairing: Billy Hargrove x fem!Reader (I’m still trying to get the hang of writing for the “reader.” Hopefully this is vague enough that you can imagine yourself. If not, send me feedback so I can get better!)
Warnings: Language. Passing, vague mentions of sex. Some Billy Hargrove chain-smoking. Bad writing with a jumpy plot. Seriously, I think I’m way too abrupt. Please send feedback. This one is probably doomed for a re-write.
Word Count: 2.4k of nonsensical, self-important musical references and haphazard, fleeting feelings.
Summary: The snarky record store girl does not like Billy Hargrove. Not at all.
**NOT MY GIF!**
—
Winter, 1984
The bell dinged above the door, a jarring interval between the wistful tones of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ Take Me Back. Prompting you to look up from your stack of records in mild annoyance. It had been such a productive day until now, and the vinyl wasn’t going to restock itself.
Well.
Had you known Mr. Born-In-The-USA-Bruce-Springsteen himself was going to walk in, you would’ve played something far less his taste than Siouxsie. Just to annoy him. Serves him right, right?
He paused in the doorway of the shop, wrinkling his nose almost imperceptibly as the sound hit his ears, before striding on toward the “Pop/Rock” section of the store, thumbing his way through Motley Crue’s latest.
Figures, you thought. A man who douses himself with as much commercial-ass hairspray and cologne would like some commercial-ass garbage “metal.” Besides, you’d walked past the blue Camaro enough times in the school parking lot to hear the dulcet tones of whatever bland-ass hair metal he was currently into trying its best to blast the doors off of his beloved metal steed.
You felt a twinge of guilt. You shouldn’t judge the customers for their musical taste so quickly– but between the old church ladies who came in for Handel’s Messiah or whatever they had heard over public radio that week, and the girls from your class riffing on Madonna, you had had just about enough.
Hadn’t anyone experienced the true depth of Queen? Keep Yourself Alive, man!
You had been working at Hawkins’ local record store during the summers since childhood – Old Mr. Cohen who owned the place used to let you sort tapes into piles for cents on the hour until you were old enough for a real job. Immersed in the music since a young age, you appreciated the breadth and depth the shop had to offer– your favorites developing into pieces heavy on synth. Bonus points if the lyrics made you feel especially existential. You loved that moody shit.
Now, at 17, you practically ran the place, Mr. Cohen comfortable with leaving you to your devices at the store, so long as the till was counted and inventory was properly stocked. You were grateful for the freedom– squeezing homework into slow nights and chatting about deeper portions of discography with regulars.
Billy Hargrove was not a regular. Neither did he promise a slow night, if the rumors amongst your female classmates were to be believed. Not that you partook in the Hawkins High rumor mill.
He was a recent, but obtrusive, arrival in your high school’s social scene. Mere months into his appearance in your town and the age-in-kind female population had seemingly lost their brain cells faster than inhaling their usual clouds of hairspray could do it for them.
Still, you had to admit, he was good-looking. The Springsteen comparison was apt. Billy Hargrove wore jeans like he was doing the denim a favor. His shirts usually two-thirds of the way unbuttoned, even in winter, which was not an unkind sight. His sun-kissed, California boy skin stood a stark contrast to the pallor of the Indiana natives you grew up with. His eyes were crystalline and swam like oceans of trouble and broken promises.
My god. You were a moody-ass bitch. Waxing poetic about this jock-strap of a human being who you’d heard pummelled Steve Harrington and nearly drowned himself in beer and barely-legal pussy. Come on, babe. Get it together.
He strode up to you at the counter, his boots clunking against the store’s tiled floor. Shout at the Devil was clutched in his fist.
He dropped the vinyl on the counter, eyes cast down and swiping a cigarette out of the packet in his jacket pocket and lighting up, the clink-thwip of his lighter meeting your ears before you could tell him to put it out.
“You can’t do that in here,” you told him.
He hummed in not-acknowledgment-acknowledgment, choosing to ignore you as he inhaled deeply.
“Seriously, dude. Old man Cohen hates that shit. Put it out or go outside and finish it. If your tits don’t freeze off. Since they’re, you know, halfway out of your shirt like that? You do know it’s December. In Indiana. Right?” You pressed, knowing full well you were being obnoxious. If only to make a point. Game recognize game, right?
He looked up, ocean eyes meeting your own. His frown was instantaneous.
“Fine,” he huffed. Before promptly stubbing out his cigarette on your freshly wiped counter, dropping the butt to the floor and twisting it under his booted heel.
“Ugh. Come on, man. I have to clean that now.”
“You were so adamant about it before.”
“Whatever man. Just the Motley Crue for you today?” You pressed. Why is he prolonging this interaction?
He rolled his eyes, his line of sight catching on the promotional sign above the counter.
“Well, now, that says new vinyl is two for one. Which one can I get with this?”
You dropped your head and exhaled deeply– So this was how this evening was going to go. You gestured at the New Release wall to the left of the front counter.
“Anything from here, Pretty Boy. New vinyl.”
Cool as you please, if you please.
Billy glanced at you, sensing your annoyance. A smirk graced his lips. He knew if he prolonged this interaction it would surely get a rise out of you.
He held up Burning From the Inside, Bauhaus’s latest release. New, but not new.
“What about this one? Cover art is alright.” He gestured at the gothica aesthetic adorning the front jacket.
“That’s Bauhaus,” you informed him, as though that would explain everything.
“Bauhaus? What is that?”
You snorted.
“No, seriously. What is that? Is that like … a sex thing?” he asked, derisively.
“It’s not a sex thing. It’s more of a not-your-kind-of-thing thing,” you stated primly.
“And how would you know what my thing is, princess? I’m guessing by the black-on-black and torn fishnets you’d be all to familiar with whatever a Bauhaus is,” he retorted.
“Well….” You went to the used pile and grabbed Press Eject and Give Me the Tape, before putting it over the speakers. As Bela Lugosi’s Dead started to play throughout the store, Billy looked unamused.
“They broke up last year. Gone too soon,” you explained, wistfully. You put your hand over your heart as though in mourning.
He leaned one arm on the counter, Motley Crue seemingly long forgotten.
“So, what is this song?”
“Bela Lugosi’s Dead? Like, Stairway to Heaven, but for goths, I guess,” you reasoned. “I’m guessing you’re more of a Scorpions kind of guy? We have Love At First Sting,” you gestured vaguely toward the wall.
Billy quirked an eyebrow at you.
“And how would you know what kind of guy I am, princess?” His voice lowering as he leans even further over the counter.
“Um. If the female population at our school is to be believed? Well, you get it…” you trailed off. “Plus, I don’t know, have you looked in a mirror lately? Scratch that. You probably don’t stop looking in mirrors. Should I cover the reflective surfaces in the store, lest you get distracted?”
Billy at least had the decency to look shocked at your barb.
But not before recovering quickly.
“Maybe you just cover the reflective surfaces in here to hide the fact that you don’t have a reflection,” he quipped.
You were stunned. Your eyes widened.
“Was that a– vampire joke, Hargrove?”
Billy shrugged. “Well, If the post-punk bullshit shoe fits… I mean, what even is playing over the speakers right now? I’m in here enough to know Cohen lets his employees pick the music from the Used pile during their shifts. Though clearly I don’t come in often enough during your shifts.”
“Thank God for that,” you sighed.
Deciding he’d had enough of the banter, Billy snagged Black Flag’s latest off of the New Release wall.
“Two for one, right?” he snarked, slapping down enough cash for one album before grabbing his findings off of the counter and striding out into the wintery evening– the bell over the door clanging after him for good measure. Like an exclamation point on whatever the ever loving fuck that conversation was. Did you— offend him??
You decided, sweeping up the not-forgotten ash from his cigarette off the floor that you didn’t ever need to have an interaction with Billy Hargrove again. You were most decidedly not post-punk bullshit.
–
Billy Hargrove had never been so ruffled in all of his life.
Throwing the two vinyl sleeves down in the passenger seat of his beloved Camaro, he slammed the door behind him.
Clink-Thwip.
Billy lit up, the chemical rush of his deep inhale-exhale instantly soothing his frazzled nerves.
He flicked the lid of his lighter a few more times, for good measure. A nervous habit. Clink-Thunk. Clink-Thunk. Clink-Thunk.
“ ‘Never stop looking in a mirror,’ my ass,” he grumbled, meeting his eyes in the rear-view before realizing what he was doing and looking away.
He’d seen that girl before. She sat alone in the cafeteria most times, headphones on, reading a book. She seemed like the type to enjoy Slyvia Plath. Not that he knew enough about Slyvia Plath to really know what that type of girl was. He swore his mom owned a coverworn copy of some novel or another with that name on it.
He drove away, tires squealing behind him, hair metal blasting from his speakers. Okay, so maybe you’d been right about his musical taste. It’s not like he’d give you the satisfaction. Besides, he’d bought BLACK FLAG, for Christ’s sake. You didn’t know him.
But still, he couldn’t deny, there was something about your demeanor. Your witticism. Your bad type. And yeah, maybe he’d sneaked a peek at your ass when you came around from the counter to scold him for smoking. Sue him, he was only human.
He knew there was more to you. A sweet undertone– like peaches and cream. Also maybe he liked ruffling your proverbial feathers. Just maybe.
He had asked Tommy about you at school the next day.
Tommy shrugged, but not before looking over at the corner of the cafeteria where you sat.
“I don’t know man. She’s hot. But, like, in the way weird girls are hot. You can look, but touching may cost you.”
Billy didn’t know what that meant. But Tommy was literally too stupid to insult. So he bit back a comment effectuating that he didn’t care and slammed the rest of his can of Coke.
–
You had seen him before. From his tire-squealing entry into your town, you were certain you’d had him pegged from Jump Street. The chain-smoking, that infernal clink-twhip of his American Flag lighter. The keg stands. The raucous screaming in Steve Harrington’s face.
“Plant your feet, Harrington!”
Plant your feet indeed. Lest you be bowled over with unwanted, obtrusive thoughts of the potential depths of Billy Hargrove’s soul. If such a thing existed.
Seriously, though. Why would he buy a Black Flag album? If there was one thing Billy Hargrove was not, you decided, it was punk rock.
You’d seen him take his sister to the arcade, and wait for her after school. Was it brotherly affection that motivated these little Babysitter’s Club moments, or was he forced to? Still, you saw the way that girl on the skateboard looked up at her seemingly cool older brother. Like he hung the stars.
He did brush off Tina after the basketball game last week. And, he bought Black Flag. That man had never listened to Black Flag in all of his life. You were sure of it.
Could he really be all bad?
–
The semester pressed on. Billy Hargrove at the fringe of your thoughts and your eye-line. Was he trying to talk to you in school?
You had the closing shift at the store again on Saturday. You were in the midst of carrying a box of tapes up the stairs from the storage room when you heard the ding of the bell above the door. You sighed, put the box down, and made your way toward the front to greet the customer. Upon seeing the back of Billy Hargrove’s perfectly coiffed, curly head, you were ready to turn back around and act like you hadn’t seen him. Too late. He clearly knew you were working.
“Please don’t let it be you,” you groaned.
“No promises, dollface.”
You stood in front of him, hands on your hips.
“So? What can I do for you?”
Billy smirked. “I can think of a few things, sweetheart,” he drawled, quirking a perfectly arched brow just so. You hated that you now noticed these things about Billy Hargrove’s perfectly stupid and stupidly perfect face.
“I don’t have time for this, Pretty Boy.”
“When are you off?” He asked.
“After close,” you said.
“Go out with me.” Billy Hargrove said, now surely unsure of himself.
“And why in the ever-loving-fuck would I do that?” You had to hand it to yourself. You were doing a damn good job of looking like you didn’t care. Meanwhile, your insides were pudding and you were just sure he knew it, too.
“Because you want to. Because I want you to. Because– Because I want to. Because I listened to Black Flag. Because I get your whole thing, plaid skirt and all,” he stated, gesturing vaguely over your person.
You rolled your eyes, choosing not to answer him. Instead, you diverted. Diversion is good, right?
“Where’s your usual crowd of hairsprayed hangers-on? Or are you always alone after school?”
“Only as alone as I wanna be, doll,” He drawled.
You’d had to hand it to Billy Hargrove. He could definitely turn a phrase when he wanted to. His crystalline eyes could definitely see right through you. As the flush travelled through your body, taking in his artful smirk and powerful visage, you knew:
Billy Hargrove was going to be the death of you. Like the satisfyingly sweet pour of languid waves of syrup cascading over waffles, drowning you in a beautiful, thick avalanche of a saccharine dream. A powdered sugar kiss dusting over your better senses, coating them in the flush of dripping endearment.
Surely you could be alone together? The crystal ball and the odyssey.
Would you go?

malcolm ronan dunn is the first born of derrick & vivian dunn , that alone creating a set sum of high expectations for the male descendent . being the genesis of what would eventually be a very famed family , it entails great pressure of being the eldest . being the offspring of a prominent actor during the 80s turned car mogul & one of the most exceptional astrophysicists of this decade , it was said that malcolm was destined to be an extension of their talents . his childhood was as ordinary as any other , attending school & having juvenile interests . . though one prominent influence in his life was music . ever since he was a baby , a set of hazel hues twinkled & cheeks were perked by harmonies that would liven up a room . by the time he was eight years old , he had already been familiar with all of queen’s discography & can partake in a discussion of how music truly defines our society .
advancing several years ahead , malcolm reaching the ripe age of sixteen , it was then he set his sights on becoming an actor . by the time he had made this realization , he had already been writing music of his own & had become what many would consider an expert drummist . however , music was subsided as a hobby for the time being , as his parents insisted that is what it was meant to be , just a hobby . his parents , his father in particular , was very ecstatic to hear that his son’s interests in becoming an actor . with the vast amount of connections he accumulated during his cinematic years , it had only took a single phone call for malcolm to star in his very first film . a quality in which almost anyone who had known mac is how effortlessly comical the boy was , & could light up just about any crowd with vivacious laughter . the boy’s innately jocular mannerisms is what landed him in his first role as evan in the seth rogan production of superbad . this film would end up being one of malcolm’s most prominent roles in his acting career , alongside scott pilgrim . following his comedic role , he starred as paulie bleeker in the romantic drama juno , which would be his first role in the romantic genre . the project that quickly followed afterward was nick & norah’s infinite playlist , leading as nick in a romance accompanied with comedy . after receiving roles back to back , his name began to rise up in day - to - day conversations , especially amongst younger audiences . he accumulated a vast & very dedicated following , all expressing their adoration for the boy & his charmingly dorkish demeanor . once he hit the age of eighteen , it was then when he landed on what would be his final role in a film , for at least awhile . the media was in a frenzy once it was revealed that malcolm would be portraying scott pilgrim in the upcoming picture , scott pilgrim vs . the world , based on the graphic novel series by bryan lee o'malley . malcolm would consider this role to be his personal favorite , as he was already a devout fan of the graphic novels to begin with , so being able to portray one of his most favorite fictional characters . . a dream , he’d say . not only was the spvtw production his favorite because of his role , but because of the heavy influence music had in the film . he was fortunate enough to be able to write & perform on the soundtrack , along the side of the best song writers in the industry . this is what ultimately led to his decision to transition from acting to becoming a musician , & his involvement in this film is what made many people realize that malcolm was quite the virtuoso .
tw ﹕ depression , suicide attempt .
when malcolm had settled on becoming a musician , his mental state began to gradually decline once he revealed this ambition to his parents . to say the least , they were not very supportive of his shift in careers , especially on what career he was shifting onto . considering malcolm did not have much going for him academically , this alone had concerned his parents . being an actor was what they considered to be stability for him , so to be presented with this news was dismaying on their behalf . the pair genuinely had exhibited zero faith in their son becoming a successful musician , & had forewarned him that there were thousands of talented musicians , essentially raising the question ﹕ ❛ what makes you think you will be good enough to make a living out of this ? ❜ . malcolm felt dispirited by his parents lack of encouragement , as well as faith in himself , to pursue the one thing he has been passionate about since the days of his youth . eventually , the voices in his head began to deter him from fulfilling his passion , & convincing him that he has amounted to a failure . among other contributing factors , malcolm eventually slipped into a deep depression for several months . his days would be spent lying in bed , in a state of restlessness , often skipping meals for the fact that he genuinely did not feel like nourishing his body . the mental state he was exhibiting was so detrimental , that his own life began to be at risk . there would be days where he would wonder what would come from ingesting more pills than what he was prescribed , or having his head remain sunk beneath his bath water for more than a few minutes . on one evening in particular , he decided to test his theory , as he had been sprawled upon the tiles of his bathroom , a capsule of his medication clutched within his palm , ebony hues ascended onto the ceiling in what he believed would be his final moments . he was in too deep . . convinced that there was no light at the end of this tunnel . though fortunately enough , his younger sister , discovered him at just the right time & immediately demanded that he receives help .
end trigger warning .
after several months of therapy , the virtuoso had begun feeling tremendously better , his mental wounds somewhat healed though not entirely . during his dark times , he managed to get some writing done , the various pieces which would eventually be released as his first official album , titled blurryface . by the time he had turned twenty two , the album made its debut & became one of the most streamed albums of the year , & won a grammy for top rock album of the year , along with many other achievements . his most popular tracks off the album include stressed out , ride , tear in my heart , & we don’t believe what’s on tv . his second album , trench , is currently in production & will be releasing singles when the time calls for it . while his depression hasn’t been entirely rid of , he a majority of the time is content with the way life is going .
* 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 .
as mentioned before , he is the most comical guy , & often uses humor as a coping mechanism . you are likely to hear him crack a joke at inappropriate times , & find him laughing in scenarios that make him uncomfortable . he often gets himself into trouble for this , naturally . malcolm has a very robin williams - esque to him , where making others laugh & feel happy to be one of his favorite past times . however , you would never suspect that someone so animated would be suffering from depression . admittedly , he has improved since the evening his sister discovered him , but of course , it still continues to creep its way back into his mental . he doesn’t like to talk about what had happened , & it was hidden from the press entirely so he wouldn’t be pitied or constantly reminded of that night . he tends to avoid the topic of it altogether .
the man is one of the most loyal people you could ever meet , & would do absolutely anything for those he loves . his sister , markelle , being a prime example of this . he loves his family more than he loves himself , & prioritizes their well being before his own . he often kept his depression disclosed from them , as well as his friends , for he genuinely did not want anyone to be concerned , in spite of having a reason to be . he is always willing to be the hero in someone else’s story , but never his own , which is probably the most heartbreaking yet beautiful aspect about him . he would sacrifice his own life if it meant that the people who he cared about would be safe , & exhibits bravery in any conflict he finds himself in . to those who don’t know him personally , or even people that do , they would simply describe him as a happy go lucky guy who is constantly seeking an adventure .
malcolm is the kind to downplay his achievements , exhibiting a humble attribute , & is truthfully touched by anyone who enjoys his work . having been told that his work always lifts someone’s spirits when they are down , or his films being involved in the most memorable moments in a person’s life . . that shit means the absolute world to him , & gives him a feeling that he would want to live on for a lifetime . the man loves music , & incorporates music in his life on the daily , for it has the biggest influence on him . his stage presence is truly fucking awesome , for you are truly getting your money’s worth by attending a concert of his . he feels alive & a rush when he is standing before thousands of people , & his faith in the world is always restored when he hears the crowd sing in unison as he performs . there is nothing he loves more than music , & music is an element of what makes him who he is . he is extremely supportive of those who pursue music , or anything , really . he has an understanding & admiration for those who are super passionate about their craft .
however , he certainly has his unfavorable qualities as well , & we have to keep it 100 in this house . the guy can be an absolute juvenile when he wants to be , & you almost forget that you are dealing with a twenty four year old in conversation at times . his inner child can get the best of him at times , so he may handle certain situations inappropriately . not only that , he can be incredibly stubborn . varying on the cause , if he is adamant about something , he will disregard the opinions of what anyone has to say about it , even if they are looking for his best interest . in spite of all his achievements , he still can be incredibly insecure with himself or his work , & is his own worst critic . considering he isn’t academically acclaimed , he can be a bit dense . . sometimes it’s frustrating , for you genuinely wonder if he utilizes any brain power . sarcasm is one of his many defense mechanisms , & he can be pretty blunt when he wants to be , something offensive slipping from his lips & likely not even acknowledging how insulting it may sound .

The love story
This post is part of the TSU. It belongs to the second part: Towards adulthood.
BTS wrote a lot of love songs and they follow the same global reflection as the other themes discussed by the boys. As the songs are pretty self-explanatory, this post will rather focus on studying them globally, to see if they form a coherent story.
Before starting, we need to consider BTS’ songs structure for a little second. Most of the time, each rapper has a verse and then the vocal line sings together during the chorus. So if you want to tell a story, considering the chorus is always the same thing, it will happen in the verses and thus will be told by the rappers. Which means we can have up to three points of view.
This leads us to the biggest problem with the love story from BTS songs: we don’t know how many boys and girls are involved. So I’ve arbitrarily decided to apply the rule of the simplest version: if it makes sense with one boy, then there’s only one boy. Also, when I say “the Boy”, it’s just the main character of the song.
The macho
This story starts rather sadly. Bangtan’s first two love songs are post-break-up songs. “좋아요” (I like it) is about the Boy stalking his ex’s Facebook and “Coffee” about the Boy remembering his ex, comparing their relationship to a sweet caramel macchiato and their break up to a bitter Americano.
As the Boy has other things to consider during 2 Cool 4 Skool and O!RUL8,2?, he doesn’t look for love and it’s only in the last song from O!RUL8,2?, namely “Outro: Luv In Skool”, that a new love is brought up:
“Even though I drink coffee and open my eyes
I still feel like I’m going to fall asleep oh no no
I often drew it up, if I ruled the world
I feel like I would put you by my side again
Tell me that it’s not too late
If this is a nightmare, please save me quickly
Take a good look, I’m still waiting for only you”
As they’ll often do in future releases, they reference their own songs in another song. “Coffee” and “If I ruled the world” are both from O!RUL8,2?, which theme is finding happiness before it’s too late. It thus appears that the Boy has come to the conclusion that to escape the sadness of his previous break up and to find happiness, he needs the love of the Girl. The song ends with Jungkook asking “Girl do you wanna go out with me?”
Suga explained in his review that “Intro: Skool Luv Affair” follows the outro and shows how each rapper would propose. The song concludes with hip-hop being the solution because it’s “Bangtan’s style”. It’s so much Bangtan’s style that in the video there are actually more “hip-hop” elements - radio, sneakers, “wassup”, caps, skateboards - than ones relating to love - a couple, hearts, roses. The continuity with O!RUL8,2? is also shown through symbols appearing in the intro videos of both albums - round, triangle, square, five-branch star.
In the lyrics of “Boy In Luv”, the Boy wonders how he could ask the girl out and prove he’s a “real man” (“상남자” which is actually the name of the song in Korean; it’s not as sexist as it sounds in English though, it’s more “real man” as in someone strong enough that you can trust them, someone responsible). It’s also implied the girl is playing hard to get:
“Even if you act like you don’t know me or act cold
I cannot push you away
I want to be your oppa
I’ll become your man, just watch”
In ”Where Did You Come From” it’s Suga’s and J-Hope’s turn to flirt with a girl while speaking in satoori (Suga explains it in his review).
“Boy In Luv” MV seems to summarize those three songs:
the intro of the MV fits with “Outro: Luv in Skool” (it’s “Just One Day”’s instrumental that’s playing though): we see the Boy - played by our international playboy falling in love at first sight with the Girl - he possibly asks her out a first time: “Girl do you wanna go out with me?” and is rejected because she’s playing hard to get. (Note that based on the photo concept and on later content, it’s also implied Jungkook has feelings for Yoongi but it’s an element belonging strongly to the BU so I won’t consider it further here.)
Then the Boy’s friends help him, each rapper explains how he would confess (”Intro: Skool Luv Affair” and “Where Did You Come From?)
And in the end, Jin goes to fetch the girl and brings her to Jungkook so he can confess himself - it was decided while filming to add Jin’s and Jimin’s scenes with the girl. As she accepts the flower, we can conclude the Boy and the Girl start going out.
However, it’s explained in “Just One Day” that they have difficulties meeting:
“Just one day, if I had time
I want to get drunk in your sweet scent
And fall asleep soundly
In the midst of my tightly-packed schedules
If I had an opportunity
I want to soak myself in your warm deep eyes”
I didn’t mention it until now, but as there are always biographical elements in Bangtan’s songs, the Boy sometimes has an idol life - here the tightly-packed schedule; in “Coffee”, there’s also the line “Girl, I’ve debuted, this one phrase should do it, right?”. It’s rarely talked about though and most of the time the Boy is just an average guy.
Another thing to note, about the MV this time, is how the boys are in the light but also surrounded closely by shadows. As if the end is already near when they’re still dazzled by their bright love.
It doesn’t stop the Boy, however, and so in “Outro: propose”, he’s fully in love:
“(Good to you)
You’re the only one for me
(Good to you)
Even with this distance between us
Always stay by my side
(Good to you)
You’re my everything
Even if tomorrow brings us trouble
Hold my hand”
You can fit “Miss Right” here too if you want.
The disillusion
Dark & Wild has two parts: the first half is “dark” and the second, starting from the interlude is “wild”. It’s a plot twist to the fairy tale we had until now: while the Boy is still deeply in love, the Girl isn’t invested in the relationship.
At first the Boy wonders, in “Intro: What Am I To You?” and then he directly warns the Girl, in “Danger”, as he gets angrier. We have similar ideas in the sentences written next to the boys in the photo book from the album:
RM: “I wanna be loved so bad”
S: “Luv turns to anger”
J: “My luv ain’t going nowhere”
JH: “My heart is full of you”
V: “U R the only one I need”
JM: “I luv U however painful it would be”
JK: “Why don’t U luv me like I do?”
Sadly, as we can see in the Japanese version of the MV, the girl doesn’t answer. And the boy ends up going to a club.
The next song on the album is ”War of Hormone”. The song where the Boy hits on a girl. A song that actually belongs to the “dark” half of the album and not the “wild” one. A song that happens when the Boy is arguing with the Girl. So yeah, if you interpret “War of Hormone” in the globality of BTS’ discography, you can see it as a possible cheating attempt made out of anger (it’s obviously a heavy over-interpretation):
“Hello hello (what!) Hello hello (what!)
Tell me what you want right now
Hello hello (what!) Hello hello (what!)
Imma give it to you girl right now
Even though you say that you’re not mine, you’re the best”
So the war would not only be the surge of sexual hormones but also the war between the love for the Girl and the anger against Her.
For love songs, this half of the album is concluded by “Let Me Know”. The Boy knows his relationship with the Girl has ended, but he still begs for her confirmation, possibly in hope that she’ll kill the last bits of love he still feels towards her:
“I just wanna know know know
I just wanna know know know
My regret is still standing in front of the ending sign
So please say something to me
Girl, let me know”
Fortunately, the “wild” side of the album is a bit more hopeful. Hard to tell if the girl for this part is the one the Boy met in “War of Hormone” or if it’s a new one, all we know is that he met someone and he’s trying to woo her. “Interlude: what are you doing” is a phone call and the only lyrics are “what are you doing”. It’s a deduction based on the next songs but it seems this “what are you doing” actually means “are you busy? Are you free to hang out with me?”.
“Blanket Kick” happens after the meeting. The Boy is kicking his blanket out of frustration because he failed at seducing Her and ridiculed himself:
“Once again I only do weird things in front of you
You’re so pretty pretty pretty
Oh Why did I do that
I’ll launch a kick at my blankets in my sleep”
His frustration is all the more understandable when you consider the next song, namely “24/7=Heaven”. He has it really bad for Her:
“24/7 I thought only of you all day”
“24/7=Heaven” also gives details about their first date:
“The first date with you
I keep getting excited like a child
These days I’m Sunday
Where the sun named you has risen, Sunday”
Their love is confirmed in “Look here”:
“At first it was mere curiosity
As I started to show interest in you
Holy Shhh Yeah, even if you ignore me
The time when you fall for me, for a minute
We look rather good together, without you
I'm like a Seoul City without lights
I wait for an opportunity to fill your empty spot, a rabbit hole graffiti
The play called A day without you is a tragedy”
“At first,
You answered once when I texted ten times
But later,
You call me first and look for me all day”
It also appears this time the Girl loves the Boy back.
“Outro: does that make sense?” is a bit hard to interpret because we can’t really know if the lyrics are about the current Girl or the previous one. The main idea here is that they fell out of love:
“Does that make sense? You, do you think that makes sense?
That our love changes so easily
So that nobody notices, so that I look fine,
I’m with you but now I’m crying at the mere sight of your facial expression
Explain it, explain it, explain it girl
My baby explain it, explain it
I hate you to death but I still think of you even now”
The School trilogy ends like this. It’s the only series with albums where love (for someone else) will be the main theme. The conclusion is rather dark for the Boy: no matter his efforts to be loved, his love always ends badly. If we refer to the coming-of-age story structure, this moment would be the hardship that counters the Boy’s vision of the world. It’s thus in a rather depressed state that he enters his youth.
The beggar
An important shift happens here. We have more reflections about inner feelings and a bit less about the outside world. There’s another difference, with the title song. RM said in the #hashtag interview:
“‘I NEED U’ is the title song. As you can feel from the title, ‘Ah~ I do need you’ trying to hold the love which is about to end. Singing the anxiety and wandering of the youth.”
More than the approximative subs provided by 1theK, what we can note is that the title song is one aspect of the theme of the album: “I NEED U” is a sad love song and 화양연화 Pt.1 is the pains of youth in general.
With the notable exception of “Converse High”, all the love songs in 화양연화 Pt.1 have the same basis, namely the Boy can’t stand the idea of the girl leaving him alone:
“Girl I would rather rather we break up
Girl say that it wasn’t love love
I don’t have that kind of courage
Give me one last present
So that I won’t go back anymore” - “I NEED U”
“Without you, I can’t breathe
Without you, I’m nothing
Open your closed heart, dampen my heart
Give me an embrace so I can feel you” - “Hold Me Tight”
“Tell me why you’re trying to go so far away
In your eyes
Do you not see me anymore Uh
Love, it’s a hurtful and hurtful thing yeah
It feels like goodbyes are hurtful
And more hurtful” - “Outro: Love is not over”
“Converse High” is closer to something like another “Intro: Skool Luv Affair” or “Where Do You Come From?”. It’s each rapper giving a point of view on the matter, which is not necessarily theirs (Suga said he had nothing against Converse and that his verse was just to oppose RM’s):
“You know what I want
A white t-shirt, denim shorts and
Red Converse Highs That’s it”
“Rather than those stars in the sky
I’d rather see them stars on your shoes
Haha all without Namjoon knowing”
“Converse converse
I really hate a converse”
Maybe we can see this song as the Boy’s friends talking, reminding us that love can be at a different stage for everyone. Let’s be very clear, this last sentence was highly over-interpretative.
“FOR YOU” was released around this time too, so if you want, you can interpret the girl leaving as something literal. After all, we have no explicit lyric about a break-up, so she possibly just left for Japan and the Boy can’t stand the long-distance relationship.
In 화양연화 Pt.2, the love story and the Boy’s life blur together. It’s the stage where he flies away to an alternative dreamlike world to escape adulthood. It’s the butterfly dream story. In “RUN” and in “Butterfly”, the Boy runs after the butterfly leading him to the dream world. He’s aware of the fragility of this world, however, since he’s extremely scared to touch the butterfly and to see it shatter to pieces:
“Like a flower whose memories are dry
All broken into pieces
From the tips of my fingers, from underneath my feet
Behind my running back
As if chasing a butterfly, like wandering through a dream
Following your traces
Please tell me the road, please stop me
Please let me breathe”
“Will you stay by my side
Will you promise me
If I touch (you), you’ll fly away and break
I’m scared scared scared of that
Will you stop time
If this moment passes
As though it hadn’t happened
I’m scared scared scared I’ll lose you”
In “Dead Leaves” and “Outro: House of Cards”, he realizes it will fail. The butterfly is alive and flies, it goes up. The leaf is dead and falls, it goes down, it leaves the dream:
“Don’t go far far away
Baby you girl I can’t hold onto you
Baby you girl I can’t give up on you
Like the dead leaves that fell
This love, like the dead leaves
Never never fall
It’s withering”
“A house made of cards, and us, inside
Even though the end is visible, even if it’s going to collapse soon
A house made of cards, we’re like idiots
Even if it’s a vain dream, stay like this a little more”
The photo concept for Young Forever is similar. In the Day version, the boys rise in a hot-air balloon and in the Night version, they’re camping - so it’s just a temporary stay.
Coming back to reality and seeing how frail and short life is, the Boy begs in “Save Me”:
Don’t wanna be lonely
Just wanna be yours
And by placing himself at the mercy of the Girl, he becomes her prisoner.
The prisoner
Only two songs can be considered here: “Boy Meets Evil” and “Blood, Sweat & Tears”. The Boy thinks the Girl is the key to happiness, so no matter how she hurt him, he’s still tempted to go back to Her. The Girl probably represents different aspects like the protective mother, the sexual partner, the best friend, the sister… in which the boy could find some relief - affection, sex, support…
The whole “Boy Meets Evil” is about this relief: the Boy knows that “Too bad it’s too sweet”. It’s similar and different in “Blood, Sweat & Tears”. The Girl still is a devilish temptation but we can probably take it in the context of Demian - it’s also confirmed in the WINGS Concept Book that “Blood, Sweat & Tears” shows the act of rebelling against God. By deduction, the Girl can be associated with Beatrice, that makes Sinclair stop drinking and go back to a healthy lifestyle:
“Kiss me even if it hurts
Come, tighten me (up)
Until it can’t even hurt anymore
Baby, even if I get drunk it’s alright, I’ll now drink you up
Deep into (my) throat, (with) you as the whiskey”
The Boy admitted his love for the Girl was toxic but he still hasn’t found an alternative to save himself until now. She’s his only way to reach happiness.
The boy and himself
And so it’s finally time for Love Yourself. The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm is essential here. If we summarize the 148 pages in a few words: love is an art and is thus something that you work on, that you perfect with discipline and faith, that’s both collective and individual, that needs to be acted on rather than thought about, and that’s killed by capitalism and vainly replaced by consumerism.
Bad news though, the Boy hasn’t understood yet. The same way Beatrice triggered Sinclair into a creative strike (that eventually led him to himself), the Girl from “Blood, Sweat & Tears” pushed the Boy into a love blackhole.
This time, he’s so despaired he calls their love destiny and he puts all his hopes into it:
“You are my penicillium
The one who saved me
My angel
My world
I am your calico cat
One who came to meet you
Love me now
Touch me now” - “Serendipity” (”Flower”, the poem referenced in the lyrics also emphasises how the lovers need each other to exist)
“From the days when the universe was created
To go on for infinite centuries
Probably from a previous life, and in the next lives to come
Since we’ll be together forever
Since all this isn’t coincidence
Since the both of us are the ones who have found destiny” - “DNA”
“Don’t lie, you are indeed an angel” - “보조개” (Dimples)
“There’s no me without you”
“You got the best of me
So please just don’t leave me” - “Best of Me”
“The answer
To all my wonder(s)
I call you her, her
Cuz you’re my tear, tear” - “Outro: Her”
“Outro: Her” announces the next part, namely Tear, where the Boy finally understands putting all the responsibility for his own happiness on his partner and altering his own personality to please said partner isn’t good.
Tear is the development of this outro. The Boy knows but he refuses to let go of his toxic relationship, not after putting so much of himself into it:
“Even in the dream that I briefly enter
The torturous phantom pain is the same as ever
Did I lose myself
Or did I gain you” - “Singularity”
“I wanna be a good man just for you
I gave the world just for you
I changed it all just for you
Now I dunno me, who are you?
In the forest just for us you weren’t there
I forgot the route that I came by
Even I became unsure who I was before
Talk nonsense at the mirror, who are you really” - “FAKE LOVE”
“We need to believe in only us
Don’t let go of our two hands
We need to be together forever
Others say
If you’re like this, you’re the only one that becomes a fool
But I don’t wanna use my head” - “Love Maze”
In the outro of this album, each rapper consider the meaning of the words “tear” and “fear” (see RM’s behind at 45:00). No matter how hard he tried, the Boy can’t save himself like that
“We walked towards the same place
But this place becomes our last
Although we used to talk about forever
Now we break each other without mercy
Although we thought that we dreamed the same dream
That dream has finally become a dream
My heart is torn, please burn it instead
So that pain and regret, none of that would be left
You’re my tear”
The word dream is quite present. The Boy left the dream world but he still longs for it - the forest from “FAKE LOVE” can probably be linked with the forest in Kafka on the Shore, a sort of ideal world.
“The truth untold” could be included but considering how it’s a reference to Smeraldo, I’ll rather leave it with the BU content.
And finally, in Love Yourself 結 Answer, the Boy realizes the solution is simply that he should love himself:
“I’m the one I should love in this world
My shining self, my precious soul
I finally realise it So I love me
Even if it’s a little lacking, it’s so beautiful
I’m the one I should love” - “Epiphany”
“You’ve shown me I have reasons
I should love myself” - “Answer: love myself”
The epilogue of the relationship between the Boy and the Girl can probably be found in the trivia and in “I’m Fine”.
The innocent Boy from 起 Wonder just wanted to have fun:
“I like the feeling of being together, with you
I like the dances that we dance together, with you
I just wanna, wanna, wanna
I really wanna, wanna, wanna
Just dance” - “Trivia 起: Just Dance“
The one from 承 Her put a lot of importance in the other person:
“You are the person
Who’ll change my recollections into memories
A person who’ll change a person into love
Before I knew you
My heart was, in its entirety, just a straight line” - “Trivia 承: Love”
The one from 轉 Tear understood it was vain to continue:
“The start was, well, fun
With the up and down in itself
Before I knew it, we became tired of each other
In the meaningless waste of emotionsThe repeated seesaw, seesaw game
By this point, I’ve become tired, tired of it” - “Trivia 轉: Seesaw“
The one from 結 Answer answers to the sad Boy from Young Forever and can finally say he’s alright, on his own:
“It’s okay, because I’m my only savior
With ugly steps, I live without ever dying
How you doin? I’m fine” - “I’m Fine”
Forget the Girl, ARMY is better
With Map of the Soul: Persona, BTS acknowledges the precious friend that has always been there for them, ARMY. They don’t need to find love in a stranger to be happy, they just need to love and care for themselves and the ones close to them.

Top 10 Albums of the Decade: Ethan Downey-Parish
Deep Blue
Parkway Drive
[2010]
After already releasing amazing albums “Killing With A Smile” and “Horizons”, all eyes were set to see what Parkway Drive would do next, which resulted in them releasing the heavy hitter “Deep Blue” in 2010. One moment you’re listening to a fast riff and then suddenly you’re hit by a breakdown that just makes you want to bang your head. This was a great album to start the new decade for Parkway Drive.
Tracks to listen to: Karma, Sleepwalker, Home Is For The Heartless
The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell
A Plea For Purging
[2010]
This was an album that was released in 2010 which I was shown to by a friend. This album was one that got me listening to heavier music. The first track “The Eternal Female” sets the tone for the album with an aggressive sound that makes you want to start a mosh pit in your room. They also do slow it down later on in the album with “The Jealous Wings” which may seem out of place but it definitely fits perfectly
Tracks to listen to: The Eternal Female, Shiver, The Jealous Wings
Diamond
Stick To Your Guns
[2012]
Stick To Your Guns have always been known for using the band to voice their opinions about issues going on in the world from homophobia to still believing there is hope for this world. Stick To Your Guns have always maintained their own sound with the verses of what you would expect from a hardcore band but they then flip it on its head and throw in a catchy chorus to sing along to and when you get to witness that live it leaves you with goosebumps
Tracks to listen to: Against Them All, Built Upon The Sand, We Still Believe
Singularity
Northlane
[2013]
This was an album released in 2013 that would become one of the most influential albums for modern metalcore bands for the years to come. From aggressive, technical riffs to well known lyrics, this album has it all. It definitely helped them break into the international scene after their previous record “Discoveries” gave them a huge boost in the Australian scene.
Tracks to listen to: Quantum Flux, Worldeater, Aspire
What You Don’t See
The Story So Far
[2013]
Another album released in 2013 (I swear this a great year for music) and another pop punk record that is showing what the genre is creating. The vocals that Parker Cannon includes on this album fits great showing the “punk” side of pop punk is still there. Both this album and the Neck Deep album I mention are too hard to pick between which is my favourite pop punk record of the decade. But just watch out when you listen to this record as you’ll suddenly have the urge to stage dive
Tracks to listen to: Small Talk, The Glass, Right Here
The Difference Between Hell And Home
Counterparts
[2013]
Counterparts have gathered an impressive discography over the years of being a band that it’s almost impossible to pick one album of theirs that stands above the rest. But I had to go with “The Difference Between Hell And Home”. Amongst so many other amazing albums released in 2013, this one stuck through and showed the kids still listening to metalcore that melodic hardcore was just as good
Tracks to listen to: Witness, Compass, Ghost
The Death Card
Sworn In
[2013]
This debut album from Sworn In helped make their mark in the alternative music scene. Filled with songs written about some dark subjects accompanied by evil sounding riffs to make an album that influenced other bands in the years to come
Tracks to listen to: Hypocrisy, Snake Eyes, A Song For The Nameless
Life’s Not Out To Get You
Neck Deep
[2015]
Neck Deep showed the pop punk scene to watch out when they released this album in 2015. Produced by Andrew Wade and Jeremy McKinnon along side Neck Deep made for a pop punk album that would show what direction the genre was moving to compared to the early 2000’s pop punk. Catchy sing a longs and catchy pop punk riffs all wrapped up in a great package.
Tracks to listen to: Gold Steps, Citizens Of Earth, December
Happiness in Self Destruction
The Plot In You
[2015]
The Plot In You proved they mean business when they dropped this album with 15 tracks on it. Sometimes having a band releasing that many songs at once doesn’t pay off with some songs not being as great as others but I feel that every single song on this album is well written. They had matured with their sound on this album. Showing that with a good mixture of heavy songs that would get people moving to but they showed they could write songs that people could sing along to. Landon Tewers shows off his amazing vocal range with his clean and unclean vocals
Tracks to listen to: Time Changes Everything, My Old Ways, Mind Controlled
All Our Gods Have Abandon Us
Architects
[2016]
This was a big album for Architects as it was the last album they would release before their guitarist unfortunately lost his battle with cancer. Tom was their main song writer and this album is almost his last words to the world with songs like Momento Mori. The album starts off with the track “Nihilist” that hits you in the face without you expecting it which makes it a perfect opening track. With tracks like Gone With The Wind and A Match Made In Heaven, Architects have shown the sound and direction they want to take their band
Tracks to listen to: Nihilist, Gone With The Wind, Downfall

a trip through murder rates: crash course in nick cave
here is the playlist, beneath lies the story.
i hope you enjoy.
1. i have an evident bias to rowland and rowland’s friends, it’s a slight one that is emphasized by an deep spiritual attachment, therefore we must start with rowland s. howard and not our dear nicholas. there were two main melbourne acts, one of which was nick’s just now forming ‘boys next door’ (which he decided to create with friends tracy pew and mick harvey after he was kicked outtuv art school), the other is rowland and ollie olsen’s ‘young charlatans.’ rowland was responsible for the creation of the boys next doors’ biggest song “shivers,” here is a clip of rowland and ollie speaking while with the young charlatans. ( x )
2. rowland wrote what i believe to be the perfect song, adaptable to all outlooks, at the age of sixteen as a comment on the over the top nature of teenage love. the song is initially a sarcastic one, yet has been redone so many times over that generally speaking it looses it’s cynical nature. this recording is the one done by the young charlatans, it’s original form with rowland on vocals.
3. this is actually about nick cave, i swear it, and here is where we get into that more so. here is a cover of nancy sinatra’s “these boots are made for walking” done by the boys next door some time in ‘78. i don’t know why nick sings like that, i’m assuming he had no sense of his vocal range at this time, and i wish the young charlatans had gotten a video but unfortunately the band split up fairly quick due to disputes between rowland and ollie.
+ there’s this house party, or maybe it’s a show, there’s mixed stories on this. but the general consensus is that nick, unruly and screwed all up on speed had been eyeing rowland for some time at this event. it was after a testosterone gun show in the bathrooms where nick ripped out a sink, that he found his fist in rowland’s face demanding to know if he was a punk or not. naturally, s a thin boy raised by women rowland was a bit disgusted by nick’s display, however took him up on his offer to meet again the following day when nick apologised. this eventually led to the creation of the birthday party, but before that rowland had managed to get a word in with his bandmates about that one song, y’know the one ..
4. here we see nick, all marionette gestures and heavy eyeliner belting his heart out over lyrics written by the tiny post ‘66 fender wielding raven shown briefly in the video. it’s undeniable that nick seemed to take this a lot more genuinely than rowland did, or at least that’s what he intended to display. this is the more popular version of the song, much glossier and easier to imagine being played at a high school dance than the previous version. this was all fine and dandy, now, but songs that sound like roxy music aren’t cool, man ! besides, every member of this band displays a talent that is remarkably astounding. the song is beautiful, yet tight, and though this is spectacular there’s much more beneath.
5. this is track is one of the birthday party’s first singles, released along with several other birthday party songs on a compilation called hee-haw which mainly consisted of the band’s earlier work. the cover art here is done by nick.
6. this track is off of the birthday party’s second record entitled ‘junkyard,’ released in 1981 and expressing more fluidity within their musical style with a certain wounded animal characteristic to the music jolted by the viciousness of nick’s voice. it is around this time, or perhaps some time before, that the band had found themselves penniless in london and retreated to berlin.
+ tensions have been steadily arising from day one due to rowland and nick’s individual stubbornness over artistic expression, nick is searching for an escape from the birthday party as he despises the route their presentation has taken. as most even vaguely punk sounding bands often realise that their audience doesn’’t so much care for the music but instead the thrill of seeing someone hurtling themselves into the ground repeatedly. no one wanted their name to be engraved in a violent history, and lucky for nick he sound his way out in berlin.
7. for some years now, the west berlin music scene has been a bustling hub of creation and innovation. with acts like abwarts and malaria surrounding, a young and reverse individual finds himself forming what would the band pioneering not only unconventional instruments but the proto-industrial movement. the band was based off a fairly simple concept; destruction as a means of creation, a notion adopted from this (x) marxist era essay as well as the factory-line like gentrification of the surrounding brick paradise. thus einstuzende neubauten was formed, and by the first glance nick felt as though he’d net his match. this rubber clad being of fire and metal was blixa bargeld, who you will see in this particular clip. (x) is a performance that shows off the impulsive and chaotic nature of the band as well as their use of out of the ordinary instruments.
8. this meeting of kindred spirits leads to nick definitively deciding to part ways with the birtday party. in an admittedly dick move, nick decided to call he record ‘the bad seeds ep,” presumably hoping to get a better feel for where he was going with his career. rowland and him are hardly speaking and they both have one foot out the door. his song is off of this bad seeds section, where nick begins to show his talent for world building and story telling.
9. this track’s off the opposite end, the part which belongs more so to the birthday party than it does to the bad seeds. i love this track for all it’s inconsistency, it attacks you from all sides musically and leaves you feeling dazed lyrically for a lack of being able to keep up. to me, this is the best way to bookend the band’s career. it displays maturity in style like no other while also perfecting the sound now heavily associated with not only the birthday party but no wave music in general.
+ below are bonus videos and music
x ( mutiny sessions )
x ( live version of shivers sung by rowland with the boys next door )
x ( another song off of einsturzende’s halber mensch, my favourite )
10. admittedly i have neglected nick’s first two records ‘from her to eternity’ and ‘the first born is dead,’ i have a storage complex with my favourite musicians where i won’t listen to their entire discography because if i get stir crazy for new material then i can get familiar with one of the records i haven’t really heard. this track is off of his third record called ‘your funeral, my trial.’ like the previous two this was recorded with the first of the bad seeds lineup comprising of nick cave, mick harvey (of the birthday party), barry adamson (of magazine), blixa bargeld (of einsturzende neubauten), and for a short time hugo race. this track is one of the bad seed’s finest in my opinion, strong on atmosphere and tone with a plot line following a distinct character who’s in a strange bind - a hallmark of nick’s songwriting. this album sound tracked wim wenders film ‘wings of desire,’ with a cameo from nick and rowland in the final act.
11. let’s catch up to rowland for a moment, who is working somewhat parallel to nick as the guitarist for a band called the crime & city solution. rowland only worked with the band for one record, ‘room of lights,’ while in berlin where he was met with his brother, harry, playing bass, mick harvey once more on guitar, and a boy from a band called swell maps on drums named epic soundtracks. this clip is from the aforementioned ‘wings of desire,’ after this rowland and the mentioned members (minus harvey, replaced by rowland’s long-time girlfriend genevive mcguckin) broke off and formed these immortal souls.
12. a lot of musicians have released cover albums, and from what i can tell almost all of kicking against the pricks is except for this track. i wanted to display this song as it shows the broadness of nick’s vocal expression, in that this song makes me want to hang myself.
+ this is a little linear note about rowland’s work after crime, epic soundtrack’s origins, and who the fuck is nikki sudden again ?
x ( these immortal souls: marry me (lie ! lie !) ), the project rowland worked on immediately after crime & city
x ( swell maps: cake shop girl ), the band that epic soundtracks and brother nikki ‘little johnny thunders’ sudden came from initially, pioneers of what would become noise rock and grunge.
x ( the jacobites: for the roses), nikki’s band with friend dave kusworth
x ( nikki sudden & rowland s. howard: a quick thing ), a track from an album rowland did with nikki called ‘kiss you kidnapped charabanc’
x ( lydia lunch & rowland s. howard: burning skulls ), a song from the brilliant record cut on a whim based on a sense of familiarity between the two
13. this music video was recorded in the studio the song was recorded in, which is in berlin. this song was inspired by a girlfriend of nick’s and how she made him feel, a very momentous affair it seems to have been,
14. nick continues to make music as the end of the 1980s draws near, the first record of this time period is 'the good son,’ who’s most popular song is undoubtedly 'the weeping song.’ that track is definitely worth a listen as well, it is one of nick’s more popular tracks but it’s a rare full display of blixa’s vocals and a great duet. this song, however, is the title song and has a beautiful choir-sound to it which is present all throughout this album.
15. my favorite nick cave record is tied between this one and one that comes over twenty years after this one, but i’ll be damned if i don’t give this record the utmost appraisal. the album is more definitive in narrative than nick’s previous records, it all seems to be written to fit a particular story line and the sense of momentum in the record is impeccable. this track tells the story of the catholic saint, christina the astonishing, a story that nick was very attached to. as we further our way through his career his interest in catholicism becomes more and more apparent.
16. this song is the slowest on the album 'let love in,’ which is one of his most popular records. the most known track by nick - 'red right hand’ - is also off this album, but in my opinion it’s not the best track off the record. this song is inspired by a story nick read in robert smythe hichens’ “the green carnation,” and the unsettling nature of the story lingers in this song. it’s the counterpart to a song earlier in the album entitled simply 'do you love me?’
17. the huge thing about nick cave is his fascination for murder, something that, the more i learn about and listen to him doesn’t seem to be that huge of a fixation of his. at least not anymore than the bible is. this album, however, murder ballads, is obviously homicide centric. this track features kyle minogue on vocals as eliza day, but she isn’t the only guest vocalist on the album. on another track, henry lee (which is a must hear as well), there is another guest vocalist. pj harvey comes into the maelstrom of nick’s life, and as is displayed in the video, they become seamlessly intertwined in a romance that nick describes as one of the best events of his life. however, in nick’s own words, 'all things move towards their end, i knew before i met her that i would loose her …’
18. after the short lived romance between nick and pj, she leaves him feeling devastated. no one knows for sure why it is they split, but nick sure as hell took it like a landslide. this song is one off of his last album of the 90s, the boatman’s call, which is essentially the pj harvey breakup album. this song has stark similarities to tom waits’ first record, which rings nothing but lovely to my mind.
19. i really. really love rowland s. howard. he means everything to me, this is a song off his first solo album. i don’t know why i chose this one, maybe it’s because the proceeding two songs off it are too difficult for me to hear. he is so talented, he is so beautiful, i don’t know where these impressions of horrendousness come from. rowland is the kindest soul to every walk this earth, but um, here we are with another beautiful display of the sharpness of his guitar playing, and that aching voice of his. he’s my favorite guitarist, and the reason why is that he does not need to sing to tell you how much he is hurting - his guitar does that all on it’s own. we’re about to get heavy. 1999.
+ nick’s doing this shit called grinderman. i’ll be honest with you, i’ve never heard a line of it. and why ? because that mustache is an atrocity to not only to this earth, but to the heavens, hell, and purgatory as well. so there’s a pretty big gap in his discography after boatman’s call.
20. 2009. alright. so. i’m going to tell you this one thing first; rowland s. howard did not deserve to die. he did not deserve death, he did not deserve any of the numerous heartaches and horrendous experiences that he went through. he went his life a genius, and was scarcely ever recognized for his immense talent and uniqueness. rowland died in 2009 due to a liver disease. he wasn’t able to get a transfer in time. and look, rowland was not ready to die. he wanted so much more, he wanted everything of the world that he hadn’t the chance to reach before. he knew he was going to die, but he did not want to. i will tell you this with my heart bared open and bleedin to you - i would give up my life to have rowland back on this earth in a heartbeat. this song is from the last album he ever released, an album which i still find very difficult to listen to. he did not deserve to die. i don’t know where it is he acquired this seemingly immense hatred of himself, and the contempt for whatever actions he committed. he was the kindest, most loving soul to ever walk this earth, and i refuse to accept his passing as anything other than a true strike of hate by god to humanity. he means wonders to me.
21. so um. sorry. but nick comes back, with that record that i told you competes with henry’s dream to me. it’s called “and no more shall we part” and it is a really difficult record to speak of due to the cohesive story line there seems to be within it. this is the final track of the album, and i believe it sums it up pretty well. i think the line in here; “i think of my friends who died of exposure, and i remember other ones who died from the lack of it.” is in relation to rowland in the latter half. this song is sorrowful, without a doubt. this is the last record blixa did with him, stuck through for years. god bless him.
+ nocturama did not do well, neither did abattoir blues. i know nothing about dig lazarus dig, these three records remind me of rickety stairs on the way up to self discovery. in his 2016 movie, 'one more time with feeling,’ he mentions how you have to grow accustomed to being a new person. you have to suss out your new self, if this new you smokes or if this new you gave up smoking years ago, things like that. trying to find his place again. he did, of course, adjust to this new nick. and the product is brilliant.
22. nick outdoes himself time after time, throughout his entire career he has bested himself. please, do not take the initial crudeness of some of the first lyrics as a reason to discard this song, it’s off of his 2013 album push the sky away is without a doubt one of the most beautiful things i have ever heard. this record is one that is vicarious to me, these days i hear it every day to sleep and sometimes constantly throughout the day.
23. nick’s last record, 'skeleton tree’ was already in development before the death of his son, arthur. many of the lyrics in the record echo his last book, 'the sick bag song,’ especially in this track where the girl who dances on the rings of saturn is a reoccurring anomaly in the book. this record took everyone by storm, if that storm is freezing and you’re trapped inside a cold black marble home. this is the end of the nick cave train ride, thank you if listened and read the whole way through. this is essentially my bare bones.
