You know the part in TPJ where Moocho frantically drives all the way to Mr. Benedict's house after receiving the telegram warning and then proceeds to fight the police officers and Mr. Bane? Actually, it was less of "fight" and more of "spinning the police officers around him like a helicopter" - but you know that part?

I love that instead of smashing down the front door (which would have been understandable! He thought Kate was in immediate danger!) - while STILL spinning the police officers around like spokes of a wheel, he stops and rings Mr. Benedict's doorbell.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

Yes, I think so. He is a neat (in both senses of the word) little (tall) gay man, and I think we would get along just swell. I'd always be happy to eat some of his extra sweet treats that he baked, and I would do my best to contribute to the household! o7

I headcanon he would be a bit cluttery, but so am I, so I think it would all work out. :D

Thanks Kas! Sorry for the delay! 25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

I’ll be honest: it’s been a minute (or decade) since I read the books in their entirety. But I loved Moocho as a character and my headcanons for him have only grown (you can thank Moth (@oflightningandstars) for that). I also love fics of Moocho and Kate; he was her family in the circus for the longest time, and I enjoying reading about them bonding together. 🥧🎪

When she arrives at the circus, there’s a bit of a commotion.  The strongman- Moocho- smiles when he first sees her. Then he frowns, a bit confused at her sudden appearance, alone, cities away from where he saw her last.  Kate tells him she’s arrived to join the circus family, and his face twists in that polite form of panic all grown ups seem to have mastered, sweeping her off her feet and placing her easily on top of his broad shoulders. Kate enjoys the view as they rush off to the circus master’s office, offering little waves to the people as they pass. There’s a faint curl of amusement rising up in her chest, all this hub-bub surrounding little’ole her. When the circus master starts trying to get in contact with the orphanage, all that amusement disappears. Like a vanishing act, like magic. There and gone, gone, gone. “You said I could work here!” A raised eyebrow from the woman behind the little trailer desk: the circus master looks different, without her extravagant costume and makeup. “Did you say this, Moocho?” “When she grew up! I thought she was asking for when she grew up... I wasn’t expecting the little miss to show up like this.” His wide, friendly face is flushed and twisted, his gestures spastic as he sputters over Kate. That charming melodious voice is so loud, and she is so small, next to this giant man on a too big chair. A puzzle piece that doesn’t fit.

Moocho Brazos Headcanons!

While Kate was at the circus, he was largely responsible for her schooling. Although she was more gifted physically than academically, she was several grade levels ahead, so he adapted to meet her where she was at. He also brought in other topics that wouldn't be taught in school because they were considered not useful or irrelevant, but he knew Kate would enjoy and find important. They often held lessons while Kate was practicing her acrobatics because it helped her to move while learning.

Later, he helped out a great deal with teaching the kids at Mr. Benedict's house, second only to Miss Perumal.

He likes folk music!

He can play the lute

He loves butternut squash

He is fluent in ASL! One of the trapeze artists was deaf, so quite a few members of the circus learned together. Then Moocho taught Kate when she arrived, and she picked it up like a natural. They used it to communicate in circus routines when the music was too loud and also to gossip around other non-ASL speaking members.

They continued gossiping in this manner after the circus, unfortunately forgetting that 70% of Mr. Benedict's household is also fluent in ASL. Including Milligan, who knows *exactly* how they're making fun of his tactical sport zip-to-transform jeans-to-jorts hybrids. However, he is choosing to hold his tongue and reveal this information at the funniest possible moment, preferably several years in the future.

Speaking of the tactical sport zip-to-transform jeans-to-jorts hybrids, Moocho and Number Two teamed up to sew a matching pair for Kate for her next birthday. She laughed at them both and at how ridiculous the pants looked, then proceeded to wear them every day.

Whenever he sees an item Kate might like in her bucket, he buys it and brings it home for her. Even if it's just a Cool Rock he thinks she might enjoy. (She does. The Cool Rock goes in the bucket.)

Somehow, he has the birthdays of everyone in the neighborhood memorized, and he always rings their doorbell with a small treat. Soon enough the neighbors ask him to bake cakes and pies for their birthdays and parties. He always pretends he's going to accept payment and then refuses at the last second.

His dream is to one day open a bakery. However, he's held off and hasn't said anything because he wanted to wait until Kate was all grown up so he could be there for her. When Kate found out as a young adult still living at home, she called him an idiot, felt horribly guilty for all of three seconds, and then persuaded him to open the bakery. He did, with start-up funds from Mr. Benedict and plans to pay him back once business gets going (of course, Mr. Benedict won't accept that. perhaps a free muffin here and there). Kate is up early many mornings helping him prep and bake for the day.

I'm imagining the Ten Men come after Moocho. Sometime between TPJ and TPD, when Milligan and Kate were packing up to move in with Mr. Benedict, and they were going to bring Moocho along too, of course they were.

But

Moocho doesn't know that

And he isn't exactly concerned about his safety, but he'll miss them and he's sad that he won't really be able to talk to his family while they're trying to escape Curtain's notice.

But then. Then the Ten Men show up at the house, at the store, at the library. It doesn't matter where, but they are there and they grab Moocho and they spirit him away to interrogate him.

And he gives up nothing, of course he doesn't. He loves his family, and he isn't about to tell these villains anything about the Wetheralls. McCracken isn't too happy to hear that, though.

Meanwhile, Kate is out of her mind with worry and Milligan is going through every contact on his list trying to find where they could have taken Moocho.

Eventually, they find out where he's been taken, and Milligan rushes off. He has to call one of the other Society adults to watch Kate because she fought tooth and nail in an attempt to be allowed to come with him.
