I've been bouncing back and forth between the last chapter of toy rosaries and the next chapter of nhthcth. Here's a few lines of toy rosaries:

“He says this guy kidnapped a kid and we need him to tell us where he is.” 

Oh, so there’s where he kept the Devil. He hadn’t felt it in some time. But it’s right there, next to the pit in his chest. It seems comfortable as it finds its way up his pulse. 

“I’ve got a pair of pliers,” says Jack, jerking his head back from where he came. “If that’ll help.”

Let's do this one: 17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

Okay so I have one for TMA and one for Marvel.

TMA: Danny, Jon, and Gerry Buzzfeed Unsolved AU. Jon runs into Agnes Montague while at Oxford, and it changes things. He goes on the run from the Web, picks up an amnesiac man he semi-accidentally rescued from some fucked up circus freaks, starts running even faster. They find a kind goth who joins them in their scooby adventures, because Jon is HIGHLY susceptible to serial killers and Gerry is kind enough to help him escape being bookified. They end up starting a ghost hunting YouTube channel, Ghost Hunt--not to be confused with Ghost Hunt UK, who hates them on a profound level--to cover up their monster hunting supernatural shenanigans. It gains immense popularity--because of Jon's skepticism about the existence of supernatural.

Marvel: the idea is that there are many Peter Parker's in the Multiverse, and the Collector just wants the one that no one would miss. A very lonely version of Peter gets nabbed right when he's starting off his Spider-Man career, before anyone even knows the name, by a Collector who's decided he's the centerpiece of his collection. This one is so dramatic. There's TRAUMA. There's SPACE. There's a GLADIATOR ARENA. There's MIND GAMES. the REVENGERS are there. And, Yes, I found a way for the Frank Castle's dead family to be there too. This is yet another one of my defridging the castle family stories. I am obsessed with this AU and it is so ridiculously niche. If anyone wants to ever read a space odyssey featuring Peter Parker and the Punisher's dead family, by fucking god, i have you covered.

i know Gertrude and Gerry have done the 'kindly granny and her grandson' routine in tma before, so there is reason to not take them at face value here. but honestly, I don't think they're going to come back into play in tmagp a lot;

for the simple reason that we've already had Gerry and Gertrude act as the cool monster hunter duo. Casting them in that role again, instead of letting us meet some entirely new characters who are fucked up in different ways, honestly just sounds a bit boring imo

So you know how in 111 Gerry says he's not the Hunters Monster Manual? Right so that sparked a whole spiral of oh Gerry plays dnd! To eventually Gerry always wanted to play dnd but never had anyone to play with so.he just learned as much about the game as he could and made a bunch of characters in the desperate hope that someday he would have a group of friends that he could play with. It got to a point where any time things got Too Much he would sit down and spend a few hours making a new character or writing down a campaign idea.

Hopping back on my BS

There’s a lot of cases for what fear Gerry is aligned with, obviously he has a connection to the eye, we’re explicitly told so but so does Melanie, Martin, Basira and daisy, all characters heavily aligned with other fears (if not more so)

And he does get bound in the end book but he seems much more like a victim of it than there for an alignment, there where several people in that book with absolutely nothing to do with the end whatsoever other than an unfortunate circumstance or other.

In my personal opinion gerry is with the hunt.

He spent his whole childhood/teens hunting down books for his mum, there’s several statements of him going after other entities even before teaming up with Gertrude and when he DOES team up with Gertrude it’s to search for clues on how to stop the unknowing. During those travels they also happen to take out several avatars, which okay not unique to the hunt but he’s very consistent in it.

Also! After he’s put in the book Julia and Herbert use him for his knowledge, obviously he could have it due to the eyes but I feel like it’s more likely he knows because he spent his whole life hunting and killing monsters.

i am winning the idgaf wars when it comes to the magnus protocol bruh.

i cannot get myself to be even remotely interested in this series. im listening out of obligation (number 1 tma fan), but i end up just waiting around for those 20 minutes to end with zero interest. for there to be a sequel to the magnus archives, a podcast with a fully rounded and complete elaborate storyline, it has to justify itself. to me, tmp doesn’t justify itself.

right now, tmp feels like someone going “oh! oh you liked THIS?? you liked THIS PART of tma??? well look at THIS!!!!! this is THAT!!!!!” and it completely flops at it every time. i won’t say its shit, i’ve liked certain episodes and i enjoy some of the characters, but side by side with tma…? come on

part of the beauty of tma is that every episode felt like you were slowly uncovering a plot with the mc. not only that, but characters were gradually introduced, and supplementals didn’t even have proper full character scenes/dialogues until s3, (a little in s2). then look at tmp. the first episode is random characters ive never heard of talking all at once, and this continues for every episode until the current one. i don’t care about any of these characters, and i feel no attachment or ‘riding along with the mc’ feeling with any of them. it feels like a random group of people sprinkled in amongst a vaguely tma-ish plot.

i also hate the attempt to INSTANTLY get into the ‘ooo big background mystery’ when there absolutely hasn’t even been enough context set for that to even matter to the listener. why do i care that gwen is getting promoted? why would any of this sinister secret plot matter to me when i barely understand the way that this institution functions normally? (which i don’t even know the name of, mind you).

you could easily say “but dan!! this will be SHORTER than tma!! its 3 seasons, not 5!!!” think about what was achieved in 3 seasons of tma. by season 3, jon was in his exploration era. he was meeting mike, jude, the monster hunters, gerry, nikola, sarah, he learned about the nature of the entities, we learnt about rituals, learnt that jon wasn’t fully human anymore, hell we even met peter, and we saw elias’ ass being sent to jail!

the pace of tmp is so fast when its plot already bears so little relevance to the listener, and it doesnt help that some of these episodes are, in complete honesty, poor. i find the writing of characters and the interactions between characters rather poor already as well.

im not trying to be harsh, but this is definitely nagging at me. ive been growing fairly irritated with tmp. feel free to disagree obviously, i can see why people would be fans. but it doesn’t hold a candle to tma. im trying reaaaally hard to give it a chance, but im growing more and more disappointed/underwhelmed by the day . pllbbttfhhh . 👎

His hand was already pulling the handle of the next door when Gerry realized his mistake. He had been too focused on the footsteps of the Hunter on the stairs behind him, likely taking two at a time, closing in on him far too quickly. The small knob was slightly warm under his fingers, inviting against the January chill that seeped in through the old walls, and the worn wood was a soft yellow unlike any other door in the building. Before him stretched a long hallway, walls a sickly green that seemed to keep pulsing yellow, nauseating thick purple carpet standing in harsh contrast. Trying to focus his attention on any particular spot made his eyes twitch. A lilting giggling came from somewhere deep inside. Gerry swore through his teeth. Yes, of course, a Thursday was a wonderful day to be stuck between two monsters.

Gerry whipped around as he heard the Hunter tear around the corner to catch up with him, but they also stopped dead at the sight of the open door. They were eager, but they weren’t stupid. The two stood there for a long moment, each trying to decide how the other would play this. The giggling grew and spilled out around them, bouncing too many times around the narrow hallway of the flat.

“Well this is a curious sight, even for me.” The giggle melted into a sickly-sweet voice, effortlessly melodious but still raising the hair on the back of Gerry’s neck. He didn’t know which was worse, having his back to the hallway and voice behind him, or having his back to the Hunter in front of him. He shifted to press himself against the open door, settling on having both in his periphery. He quietly cursed not having more allegiance to The Eye in this moment.

MAG 3 Across the Street - this is the only episode that genuinely scared me. fucked up evil imposters who look and act nothing like you but only certain people can tell and everyone else believes is and was always the real you? ugh. awful.

MAG 15 Lost John's Cave - the concept of the episode itself is already pretty frightening, but the ending is CHILLING. 'take her not me'. fuck my entire life.

MAG 31 First Hunt - i just really liked listening about how some posh british guy got chased by a werewolf. also the fact that hunters can shrug off gunshots to the chest... cool, but jesus christ.

MAG 36 Taken Ill - nothing in the podcast fucked me up more than the moment i realized that the funeral director cut off her hand to stop the Corruption from spreading

MAG 67 Burning Desire - agnes and jack's story is just so tragic to me :(

MAG 77 The Kind Mother - more horrifying supernatural imposters! the fact that the fake monster mother was nicer than the real one was so fucked up

MAG 111 Family Business - GERRY EPISODE <3

MAG 119 Stranger and Stranger - i've talked about it in more detail before but i really enjoyed the different format of this one. also tim :(((

MAG 150 Cul-De-Sac - the only episode that made me cry. also the description of the endless empty streets and houses was awful and made me feel sick. fantastic episode.

MAG 153 Love Bombing - the real horror of this one wasn't anything supernatural but the cult and, as the statement giver says, how anyone is vulnerable to them. this episode was so good at portraying that.

MAG 159 The Last - no need to explain this one. i think we all lost our shit when we listened to 159.

MAG 165 Revolutions - best horror poetry about being eternally trapped on an evil merry go round where everyone claws each other's faces off i've ever listened to. also the famous smiting episode. what's not to love.

MAG 169 Fire Escape - i just think the desolation is neat

MAG 196 This Old House - hilltop road was one of the biggest mysteries in the podcast and the payoff did not disappoint

As you have probably guessed by now, the current hyperfixation IS the Magnus Archives and my brain keeps on being bombarded with Thoughts and AU ideas. Anyways Jon and Gerry as Lietner hunters AU, where Jon starts showing up along side Gerry in statements (probably around college time?). Jon isn’t spooky or mysterious monster jon though, he’s closer to season 1 flavoured Jon. Kinder and happier, but prim and snooty and persnickety and all of those other adjectives that you would not associate with a professional book burner and rescuer of victims of the supernatural.

People coming in to the Magnus Institute and sharing their harrowing story, and talk about this mysterious goth they met, and then part way through this utterly unintimidating nerd shows up. He looks like a strong wind could have knocked him over. The mysterious goth gets this soft, fond look on his face that doesn’t match the horror of the situation. The nerd may or may not at some point do something stupidly reckless, or mention having done something stupidly reckless, or get into an argument with the goth over NOT doing something stupidly reckless. They find a book. Goth asks the posh bastard nerd if he’d like to do the honours this time around, and the nerd takes a little too much glee in burning it. The goth watches him in amusement that still manages to be a bit too sappy to be comfortable. What started as a horrific and traumatic event in the statement giver’s life has started to feel like they are awkwardly third-wheeling on a date.

Sasha is probably the archivist in this AU, and she is absolutely keeping track of people who show up in statements more than once. They start trying to put together a timeline of Gerry’s appearances and when Jon started showing up. Tim gets way too invested in how their relationship evolves over the statements.

In case it isn’t clear, this is absolutely a Gerry Lives AU and possibly a Jon Remains Human and nothing bad ever happens to him au. There may be some angst, perhaps a smidge of peril, but as the universe does it’s best to be an inevitable horror/tragedy, Jon and Gerry are out there living their best book burning rom com life.
