I just watched a drama (called 'momikeshite fuyu') and it fucked me up so bad like... Nothing was bad in it per sé, nobody died, but like... (I'll put a read more cus spoilers for the series)

This is just personal vent bc I need to get it off my chest don't mind me

The main character was just so poorly treated by his family I was so rooting for him to just burn it all to the ground or something, and finally he left the family and started living with another and was feeling true happiness.... And then the last fucking episode he goes back to bad family. I don't know why and I don't even wanna know. I did not have the strength to watch it, I only skimmed the episde to confirm what's in it. Screw this, screw everything.. I'll pretend 9th ep is the last one where my boy just leaves the family, joins his real family and feels happiness for the rest of his live and is treated like a person, with kindness and gratitude and everything.... Why would he ever go back just doesn't make any sense, fuck this, man

My Top 15 favorite movies/series I’ve watched in 2018

I’m not a professional movie critic or something, I just love to share it with y’all and hope you get something from it.

If in the past years, I was hooked in Japanese movies and only watched certain genres, this year, I decided to explore and feed myself with these gems.

1. PK (2014)

A comedic-philosophical movie. The alien concept is such a genius and a creative way to do it. EYE-OPENER. Do 👏🏼 not 👏🏼 miss 👏🏼 this 👏🏼 out.

2. Pad man (2018)

A real-life story of a man who is dedicated to making a napkin. Reading the plot, It is quite ridiculous, but watched it for fun anyway and It turned out to be filled with Life lessons, Political and cultural discoveries. The world should learn from Indian directors!

3. How to get away with murder (Season 1-4)

Don't judge me for just watching it this year. People have recommended it before, but idk I thought It'll be just like another American crime thriller. But I regret it! It is awesome. I'm still watching it actually. The story's very complicated, I love the main cast and their messy lives (like real-life lawyers and law students) and it's something you would finish all night. My family's obsessed with this.

4. Loving Vincent (2017)

Don’t miss this film if you’re an artist! Animated manual paintings of artists in Van Gogh’s style? A perfect way to make a Biopic! It will not only impress you but somehow understand his life. Warning: This film might be depressing.

5. Mary Shelley (2017)

Watched it because I was really curious who’s the genius behind my favorite movie adaptation (Frankenstein). And admired her even mooooore. One of the earliest feminists! 

6. Frankenstein (2015)

It is actually a film viewing for our Philosophy class. Not a fan of sci-fi, but became a fan of Frankenstein because of it. This is the most unique Frankenstein film they’ve made. It was set in a modern era.

7. Witch’s court (2017)

Koreans really make good crime/law dramas! TBH, the main plot was actually a cliché and predictable (if you watch a lot of Kdramas about crime), but the cases were interesting and gave me insights on how victims feel and experience as they're about sexual-related cases. 

8. Queen of Katwe (2016)

The movie depicts how realities and dreams overlap. It’s frustrating and inspiring at the same time. 

9. Marshall (2017)

You should know Thurgood Marshall. He defended black people from crime accusations based on race. They should make a series on this! This movie is not enough to show how cool He is.

10. Belle (2013)

Inspired by a painting and life story of a biracial daughter of a British admiral. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is freaking pretty btw! Don’t sleep on her. I would love to see her be a princess in a movie someday.

11. Frida (2002)

SALMA HAYEK IS PERFECT. I don’t know what I like more, The movie or her acting. I was impressed the whole time like how can someone be so perfect for a biopic. Like ‘Loving Vincent’, They made me feel what she felt.

12. Hidden Figures (2016)

Life of 3 of the greatest brains in NASA. Very empowering! t is when there was still racial segregation in America.

13. Get out (2017)

I really don’t know what to feel about this movie. Weirdly-creepy. A unique way to make a thriller. Fresh!

14. The hows of us (2018)

NOT A KATHNIEL FAN (Just to clear things up lol). I had no plans to watch, but My brother and his girlfriend treated me to the cinema so why not. Didn’t expect it would be goooood. One of the best mainstream Pinoy movies I’ve watched. Very realistic 👌

15. Momikeshite Fuyu (2018)

Still watching Japanese series and movies! And this stood out. I hesitated at first and almost drop after 1st episode, but it turned out to be weirdly funny (Jap. Humor u know) and heart-warming. I got a lot of sympathy for the lead.

Think Note Vol #59: Winter

* A reference to Momikeshite Fuyu, aka “Cover up winter~ There are no problems in our family~” or “The Kitazawas: We mind our own business” (GEMTV) or “Lots of Shit Happened in Rich People’s Families” (Taiwanese name 😂)

The atmosphere of the festive streets can make one’s heart dance and be lost in thoughts. His drama, “Momikeshite Fuyu ~ Wakaga no Mondai na Katta Koto Ni ~”*, is about to start.  For Yamada, it is surely the beginning of an unforgettable winter.

When people ask me “What is your favorite season of the year?”, up till now I have always said “spring & autumn”. However, when I see the city full of Christmas spirit, indeed I felt that winter is the best.  I am not sure if it’s due to the splendid and romantic illumination or the TV stations enthusiastically playing Christmas songs, the end result is that I set up a Christmas tree at my place since the start of November (laughs).  My tree is 50 cm tall and is pure white. Although I had bought ornaments for it, I wanted a silver theme, so I ordered a bunch of new ones from the Internet. The stuff got shipped this morning, so I look forward to hanging them on the tree♪.

When I was checking on the planters in the morning, I thought “It’s cold!”, so I think it’s a sign that winter is here.  Even though it is my favourite season, at the same time, I feel a bit sad.  Every Christmas, I end up meeting with a bunch of guys, listening to Chris Hart’s song and saying “It’s already the time of the year to be listening to this song~” (laughs); we said the same thing every year. We also watch the music videos of Christmas songs performed by various artists, and we declare that “Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ is the best after all.”  Just how many times does the word “Christmas” appear in the lyrics?!  Well, being able to say the same things with the same members is fun though.

On the work front, between shooting the winter drama and the concert, it is looking very busy. Every year, from the time the summer tours begin, followed by drama filming and movie premieres, music programs, “Johnny’s Countdown”.... and I think “the end of the year is here!” This winter, the TV drama “Momikeshite Fuyu ~ Wakaga no Mondai na Katta Koto Ni ~” (NTV) will start broadcasting in January, so it will be more busy than before.  When it is that busy, I hope I don’t accidentally cover up my memory as well (laughs).  Actually, the director-san for this drama is the same as the one for my first drama appearance, “Tantei Gakuen Q SP”.  He is very blunt when he speaks but it is out of love… while he is a passionate person, for the 11 year-old me, I thought he was very scary (laughs).  That’s why when I met him again this time, I told him about how I was so scared of him back then.  Also, there is another director who had helped me since the drama “Scrap Teacher ~ Kyoshi Saisei”.  So with all these familiar faces, I felt at home right from the costume fitting before crank-in; I think it is going to be a fun 3 months.

The character I am playing, Kitazawa Shusaku, is the second son (youngest brother) of three and he’s just some regular guy you can find anywhere.  He is the only one not loved by the family, so from that point of view, it sounds similar to “Cain & Abel”, but it is nowhere nearly as serious (laughs). In this drama, when the “hopeless thing” of the episode happens each week, you will see everyone racing seriously towards erasing that problem, but the audience who watch the episode unfold will think they are being idiots and hilarious.  It’s not that you’ll ready yourself and say “I need to see it!”, but if you happen to turn on the TV and start watching without thinking too hard, I hope we can make you laugh on a Saturday night.

Mini review of Momifuyu:

Freakishly long name aside, Momikeshite Fuyu (Momifuyu) is a family comedy that is at times ridiculous, at times heartwarming, and at times downright sad. Like seriously, I felt teary in a few scenes. He said above that it is like a funny Cain & Abel, but it is not exactly the case. Shusaku wasn’t unloved like Yu in Cain & Abel - it’s just that his family expressed love in a different sort of way.  At least when I want to slap some of the characters, it is out of love!

It may take a few episodes to warm up to the characters and the style, but I ended up loving most of them by the end. It’s fun watching Yamada play the most un-Yamada character and a total trip if you happen to watch FMA, Namiya, then Momifuyu back-to-back.  The ending was a tonal shift though, to put it gently, but nevertheless, I will like to see a sequel. 😅

The acting is more of a comedic style, so you may also need to get used to the somewhat exaggerated expressions and inner monologue, but you also never know when you’ll be hit with the feels.  If you haven’t watched it, check it out on GEM TV Asia (if you have it & it’s still broadcasting) or the Eng sub from the HSJ fansub team:

Momifuyu Final

I’ve said it again and again, I go to this drama for the shits and giggles, so of course the drama had to go and make me cry in the last episode.

This is a drama I’d recommend, when you just want to keep things light but would also like to be invested in the characters and watch over their growth. They will make you so proud.

I’m glad Shuusaku served his time, fortunately, because if the drama lets him off after doing pulling off all those stunts (which he states ouright many times: It’s clearly a crime!), I don’t think I can feel this good with the ending. The siblings still play the carrot and stick game so hard, but go Chiaki for showing us the sharpness and acuteness possessed by those who are female family members, even if she’s the evil sister from hell. 

The Chiaki-Ozeki angle is also very nice. It adds a spice I quite enjoy having during my watch. I’m loving Kotaki more and more in this drama. I feel like I need him in something tragic next, cause he seems like he’ll do it well. My compliments to him, really.

The site to vote for the 96th TV drama awards just opened.  Each season, they hand out prizes to 9 categories and readers can vote for 6 of the 9 categories.  The voting will conclude on 2018/4/3 at 11:59 JST.  You can vote in the site below.

Just in case you need it, here is a simple guide on how to vote.  Remember, you MUST select a candidate for all 6 categories before they allow you to complete the voting.  It looks like you are allowed to vote once for each IP address.  Also, I think you may be able to vote using different browsers.  (You can vote more than one from the same computer using an incognito window on Chrome.) Anyway, you guys can figure that part out.

Step 1: You will be taken to this screen.  The 6 categories (部門) in the order below are:

Best Drama 最優秀作品賞, Best Lead Actor 主演男優賞, Best Lead Actress 主演女優賞, Best Supporting Actor 助演男優賞, Best Supporting Actress 助演女優賞, and Best Theme Song ドラマソング賞.  Click on each category to select the candidate. 

Alternatively, you may sort by drama, so just click on ドラマ and they will list all the works in contention this season like below.

Step 2: If you are like me, who have basically only watched 1 drama, it’s easier for me to go by the drama.  So, I picked Momifuyu (もみ消して冬).  Here are all the categories they are up for (basically all but Best Lead Actress).

Simply click on the “heart” icon next to the name.  Once your vote is registered, the “heart” turns blue.  Naturally, I picked Yamada Ryosuke 山田涼介 for Best Lead Actor. (I never said I am not biased, although I actually think he was very good in this show!)  At any time, you may also click on the various categories on the side to see the list of candidates for each category. The Supporting categories are a few pages long!

If you look at the panel on the side, you will see that “ 投票する“ is greyed out.  That is because I haven’t picked all 6 categories yet.  Once I do, it will turn blue and the lock symbol will “open”.

About the voting:

Based on the brief description on the website, the awards are given based on points from 3 groups: Readers, Judges (5), and Journalists (15). Each voting group will be given equal weighting in the overall grades.  They didn’t really go into the details on how they count the points for each category. I think the judges and journalists probably rank the dramas (like 1 to 5) and points are given for each rank rather than 1 person getting only 1 vote, although this is just speculation.  That’s it.  Let me know if you have any questions.
