Think Note Vol #59: Winter

* A reference to Momikeshite Fuyu, aka “Cover up winter~ There are no problems in our family~” or “The Kitazawas: We mind our own business” (GEMTV) or “Lots of Shit Happened in Rich People’s Families” (Taiwanese name 😂)

The atmosphere of the festive streets can make one’s heart dance and be lost in thoughts. His drama, “Momikeshite Fuyu ~ Wakaga no Mondai na Katta Koto Ni ~”*, is about to start.  For Yamada, it is surely the beginning of an unforgettable winter.

When people ask me “What is your favorite season of the year?”, up till now I have always said “spring & autumn”. However, when I see the city full of Christmas spirit, indeed I felt that winter is the best.  I am not sure if it’s due to the splendid and romantic illumination or the TV stations enthusiastically playing Christmas songs, the end result is that I set up a Christmas tree at my place since the start of November (laughs).  My tree is 50 cm tall and is pure white. Although I had bought ornaments for it, I wanted a silver theme, so I ordered a bunch of new ones from the Internet. The stuff got shipped this morning, so I look forward to hanging them on the tree♪.

When I was checking on the planters in the morning, I thought “It’s cold!”, so I think it’s a sign that winter is here.  Even though it is my favourite season, at the same time, I feel a bit sad.  Every Christmas, I end up meeting with a bunch of guys, listening to Chris Hart’s song and saying “It’s already the time of the year to be listening to this song~” (laughs); we said the same thing every year. We also watch the music videos of Christmas songs performed by various artists, and we declare that “Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ is the best after all.”  Just how many times does the word “Christmas” appear in the lyrics?!  Well, being able to say the same things with the same members is fun though.

On the work front, between shooting the winter drama and the concert, it is looking very busy. Every year, from the time the summer tours begin, followed by drama filming and movie premieres, music programs, “Johnny’s Countdown”.... and I think “the end of the year is here!” This winter, the TV drama “Momikeshite Fuyu ~ Wakaga no Mondai na Katta Koto Ni ~” (NTV) will start broadcasting in January, so it will be more busy than before.  When it is that busy, I hope I don’t accidentally cover up my memory as well (laughs).  Actually, the director-san for this drama is the same as the one for my first drama appearance, “Tantei Gakuen Q SP”.  He is very blunt when he speaks but it is out of love… while he is a passionate person, for the 11 year-old me, I thought he was very scary (laughs).  That’s why when I met him again this time, I told him about how I was so scared of him back then.  Also, there is another director who had helped me since the drama “Scrap Teacher ~ Kyoshi Saisei”.  So with all these familiar faces, I felt at home right from the costume fitting before crank-in; I think it is going to be a fun 3 months.

The character I am playing, Kitazawa Shusaku, is the second son (youngest brother) of three and he’s just some regular guy you can find anywhere.  He is the only one not loved by the family, so from that point of view, it sounds similar to “Cain & Abel”, but it is nowhere nearly as serious (laughs). In this drama, when the “hopeless thing” of the episode happens each week, you will see everyone racing seriously towards erasing that problem, but the audience who watch the episode unfold will think they are being idiots and hilarious.  It’s not that you’ll ready yourself and say “I need to see it!”, but if you happen to turn on the TV and start watching without thinking too hard, I hope we can make you laugh on a Saturday night.

Mini review of Momifuyu:

Freakishly long name aside, Momikeshite Fuyu (Momifuyu) is a family comedy that is at times ridiculous, at times heartwarming, and at times downright sad. Like seriously, I felt teary in a few scenes. He said above that it is like a funny Cain & Abel, but it is not exactly the case. Shusaku wasn’t unloved like Yu in Cain & Abel - it’s just that his family expressed love in a different sort of way.  At least when I want to slap some of the characters, it is out of love!

It may take a few episodes to warm up to the characters and the style, but I ended up loving most of them by the end. It’s fun watching Yamada play the most un-Yamada character and a total trip if you happen to watch FMA, Namiya, then Momifuyu back-to-back.  The ending was a tonal shift though, to put it gently, but nevertheless, I will like to see a sequel. 😅

The acting is more of a comedic style, so you may also need to get used to the somewhat exaggerated expressions and inner monologue, but you also never know when you’ll be hit with the feels.  If you haven’t watched it, check it out on GEM TV Asia (if you have it & it’s still broadcasting) or the Eng sub from the HSJ fansub team:

BP overall review.. ish

My memory of the entire drama is getting fuzzy, so before I forget everything I’m putting down what I remember feeling, thinking watching it the past 2 months.

Last season, I watched MomiFuyu for the shits and giggles, and got attacked by feels at the end. I approached BP with the opposite intention, only to learn that I will be watching it for the shitz, ironically.

This is a joke (in the worst possible meaning) well done (production was great, ain’t never denying that).

...is what I had in mind somewhere around 2nd episode until the end.

Right, so seems like Nino got to revisit the revenge theme on his return to a TBS drama. Same theme, same station, different genre though, so that should be okay... It got to me that Jun’s role last season was kinda in the same situation, but they still did it different, so ‘s still fine.

Now, about how they did it different. God, I love the two main roles so much (shush, in my eyes it’s Tokai and Saeki) I really don’t want to go at them, but damn Saeki, you are one stupid selfish man. You want to see the genius flourishing, excelling as he plots his revenge against you, you actually let him be misled all the while. All the pain that can be saved, Saeki, you bastard!!! I can’t believe Tokai got to be cool and invincible for a stupid reason like this.

The black pean mystery was like.. uh.. welp, that is what happens when you take an originally from the 1980s story (Black Pean 1988) to be adapted (poorly) into the current times. All the political fighting and scientific development in the background just don’t mesh with that as an ending.

I read some tweets about how Nino is just. not. blessed. with a good script. He used up all his luck with Ao no Honoo and Iwojima. I laughed on my train home. Poor guy, no wonder he was so keen on adlibbing here and there. Also, I wonder whether he got to win his fight against TBS and that was what we got? Or he lost and that was what we got? Coz I sorta trust Nino, and if he had his way, I’m pretty sure we would’ve gotten the better end of the deal. In other words, if he lost and that was what TBS gave us, I wonder what he would’ve gone for. If he won, then... I can’t imagine what TBS had in mind in the first place. *shivers*

Alright, that was the joke. However, I watched this drama real-time whenever I could. Why? (other than the fact that I don’t have a life.) Well, the drama was well done. Specifically, the cast was really good, satisfying to watch as expected of a TBS Sunday 9-pm slot. 

Tokai was hawt and dripping pheromones everywhere like some loose tap, I thought it was a shame they didn’t include a love angle somewhere. Make that multiple angles, preferably all centered around him. I think I made it clear I ship SaekixTokai, and TBS seems to at least perceive that there is demand because what is that last episode if not to serve SaekixTokai shippers’ thirst. No, I mean, really. That yuka-don was sooo unnecessary, and so was Tokai sitting on Saeki’s bed (if Tokai really hated the guy, he’d be putting as much distance between themselves, but obviously he just can’t resist the dandy old man). Their chemistry was great, as expected of winner and nominee for the 39th Academy Award. I actually had a good feeling about them since the first WS campaigns. Just didn’t expect them to be so.. lit around each other. 

Case in point, Tokai bowing and following Saeki’s orders, albeit half-tongue-in-cheek, throughout the drama has me hooked. This is Tokai who does however he wants we’re talking about here. So seeing him bow, non-ironically, in the last episode really did me in. I’ve always wanted to see that. Another thing I wanted to see was Tokai smile. Like, really smile. The best we got was the scene with his father though. Oh well.

Takashina was confusing, or rather confused, for me, but I give props to Koizumi Koutaro for playing the committed guy just trying to work by the system. What was it again, lawful neutral? He’s got the face for it.

Sera was supposed to be like the main character, representing the audience’s viewpoint or something.. Not totally convinced about that, but I love him trying to stop Tokai. Not giving up on Saeki. Obeying all kinds of orders from his superiors. He’s useless, but earnest. At least Takeuchi did well portraying that side of him until the end.  

Shuri was great as a loyal Neko. She doesn’t play much role in the plot though so not much to say about her.

Katopan. Oh boy, she came out of nowhere (apparently, mostly as a ratings puller) and was quite a pleasant surprise somewhere in the middle of the drama. Definitely did not see her character playing that big a role in the story, but she did well for her first drama. 

Head Nurse Fujiwara’s veteran aura was amazing. I particularly liked her convincing Saeki to take a break in the last ep. Thank you for being by his side as, probably, his only true confidante.

Special mention to Mizutani Kaho who managed to withstand pressure from Tokai in Ep7. She shone best that episode with just that scene, imho.

Oh, and Assistant Prof. Kurozaki was useless but makes for a cute Saeki-groupie. Same can be said about the rest of the Heart surgeon department, including Sekikawa and Kakitani. They’re kinda endearing in their own way.

Overall, I give the drama a 3/5, with Tokai making up 2.5 from that. As a role for Nino itself, Tokai gets a 9/5 out of a full score of 10/5 (I know that’s not how scoring works, shush) because eventhough he really hot, he also had to act according to that stupid script, so inevitable minus points really.

Would I watch the drama again? Hell yes, because Tokai is that hot. Nino has my thanks for putting up with the script (wonder if he badmouths his own drama, he probably does) to deliver us this wonderful hot man. Did I mention Tokai is bloody hot?

tldr: Tokai was hot, drama was a mess.

TV Drama Award Voting Guide

The site to vote for the 96th TV drama awards just opened.  Each season, they hand out prizes to 9 categories and readers can vote for 6 of the 9 categories.  The voting will conclude on 2018/4/3 at 11:59 JST.  You can vote in the site below.

Just in case you need it, here is a simple guide on how to vote.  Remember, you MUST select a candidate for all 6 categories before they allow you to complete the voting.  It looks like you are allowed to vote once for each IP address.  Also, I think you may be able to vote using different browsers.  (You can vote more than one from the same computer using an incognito window on Chrome.) Anyway, you guys can figure that part out.

Step 1: You will be taken to this screen.  The 6 categories (部門) in the order below are:

Best Drama 最優秀作品賞, Best Lead Actor 主演男優賞, Best Lead Actress 主演女優賞, Best Supporting Actor 助演男優賞, Best Supporting Actress 助演女優賞, and Best Theme Song ドラマソング賞.  Click on each category to select the candidate. 

Alternatively, you may sort by drama, so just click on ドラマ and they will list all the works in contention this season like below.

Step 2: If you are like me, who have basically only watched 1 drama, it’s easier for me to go by the drama.  So, I picked Momifuyu (もみ消して冬).  Here are all the categories they are up for (basically all but Best Lead Actress).

Simply click on the “heart” icon next to the name.  Once your vote is registered, the “heart” turns blue.  Naturally, I picked Yamada Ryosuke 山田涼介 for Best Lead Actor. (I never said I am not biased, although I actually think he was very good in this show!)  At any time, you may also click on the various categories on the side to see the list of candidates for each category. The Supporting categories are a few pages long!

If you look at the panel on the side, you will see that “ 投票する“ is greyed out.  That is because I haven’t picked all 6 categories yet.  Once I do, it will turn blue and the lock symbol will “open”.

Step 3: Once you picked all 6 categories, you will need to click on the 投票する button.  It will take you to the page below for you to confirm your choices one last time.  Once you are happy with the selection, you MUST click 投票する again.

About the voting:

Based on the brief description on the website, the awards are given based on points from 3 groups: Readers, Judges (5), and Journalists (15). Each voting group will be given equal weighting in the overall grades.  They didn’t really go into the details on how they count the points for each category. I think the judges and journalists probably rank the dramas (like 1 to 5) and points are given for each rank rather than 1 person getting only 1 vote, although this is just speculation.  That’s it.  Let me know if you have any questions.
