Just watched the first episode of If It's With You, and even while watching, I had a moment of "oh, this is different."

Amane is a very different protagonist from what we usually get, in his seemingly blithe pursuit of men and disregard for actual relationships. We don't get that a lot, particularly not in highschool stories. I'm not sure what to think about him quite yet, but he's interesting, very much so. Also him being so open about his likes and dislikes and all that, in a small town at that, gave me anxiety like whoa, but that's definitely more of a reflection on me than on the show. For the other characters … Yamasuge is so polite and so buttoned up but not at all closed off? He's polite, not standoffish, I really enjoy this. The Grandma seems lovely.

I'm looking forward to getting more backstory; the things they teased at were intriguing. Excited to see where they take it.

This episode started fairly abruptly – right into the flashback, no holds barred, and now we're off to the baths together! I love how straightforward Amane is, and how Ryuuji isn't holding back at all, either. I like that they're not teasing us about the backstory too much, just letting it come out little by little. And oh, I hurt for Amane – mustering the courage to come out to someone and not having the other person believe you … that's the worst. I love that they addressed Ryuuji's speech patterns — the contrast between the "ore" and the desu/masu thing was so noticable! Ah, of course — get caught in the rain, catch a fever. These kids are so cute.

This story moves fast, but I guess if they only get five episodes they have to, and it doesn't feel rushed at any rate. I'm excited to see where this goes.
