Summary: He was supposed to graduate a football player, but the plan changed, and now he’s a struggling athlete on a hockey team that can’t stand him. Back at square one for the first time in six years. Lost, but eventually found.

She’s a stable athlete who has a full ride to a D1 college. She has friends and he isn’t one of them. That is, until she shoulders how much of a pain he is, and decides to help teach him to play. Then all of a sudden, he doesn’t seem so bad. Satisfied, but inevitably yearning.

Summary: Jane Cambell is Mitchell Marner's best friend, and when he asks her to let the rookie goalie stay in her guest room, who is she to say no?

Mitch and I had grown up next door to one another. There wasn’t a birthday party, school event, or family function where we weren’t together. We were inseparable. So, when Mitch got drafted to the Leafs, it made sense for me to follow him and attend the University of Toronto. I loved being around the team and doing homework at practices. I was thrilled to interview Mitch for my final papers, to spend time with him again. Once I graduated, I went on to work for the team, Mitch and I stayed close. When Mitch met Steph, I was overjoyed. She was perfect for him, but it left me with more time to myself. Something I didn’t understand what to do with. I found myself wandering aimlessly after work, never having plans.

When Mitch told me the team had called up a new goalie, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Since he had recently moved in with Steph, he had asked me if the new guy could use my spare room until he got on his feet. I, of course, said yes. Mitch had always been a great judge of character and if he felt comfortable letting him stay with me, then I felt comfortable. What I didn't expect, however, was for this man to come through the door with lego boxes stacked above his head. And like… goalies are tall, but I couldn’t even see his face.

“Hey! Thanks for letting me crash, let me just set these down in the room and we can properly introduce ourselves…” He said, his voice muffled by the many boxes in front of him.

“Oh yeah of course, um it's the door to the left of the TV.” I replied, stepping aside so he could walk in. It took him about five minutes to set the boxes how he wanted them, the echo of fallen boxes and muttered curse words heard throughout the apartment.

“Can you help me grab my bags? I don’t really have that much stuff yet… I mean I’m not really new to Toronto but I just lived with teammates when I was on the Marlies so like…” He said, rambling on as he stepped back into the main room. His blue eyes caught mine and he quickly lost whatever thought he was about to share. Like seriously are piercing blue eyes mandatory to be on the Leafs? Because, wow.

“I’m Joseph… Uh Woll… yeah. But I mean most people call me Joe haha…” He said, his left hand scratching the back of his neck and holding his other out awkwardly.

“Jane, but my friends call me Janie.” We shook hands. Joe and I found our rhythm easily. He would leave before I got up in the morning and I would meet him at the office for lunch before going to meetings. We’d head home together on off-days, laughing about anything and everything. I felt like that missing piece I’d been searching for had been found.

The hard-part was always away games. Joe and Mitch would spend weeks away, traveling for games whilst I was left in a mostly empty office, planning future events and booking flights. When the boys are away Steph and I usually grab dinner and talk, but I was hesitant to have to answer questions about my relationship with Joe. He and I had gotten increasingly close and several of his teammates had picked up on some of the underlying tension on my end. It was clear to me, at least, that Joe wasn’t interested in me, despite what Kniesy kept saying. Kniesy and Joe are pretty close, but I can’t help but feel like he’s just messing with me. Plus, I mean I don’t even know what Mitch would do about me dating a teammate of his. I mean he was always protective growing up, purposefully keeping me from his teams. The one time I did go out with someone from his team, we realized we’d be better off as friends, which is how I ended up with Matthew Tkachuk as my fantasy football teammate.

I decided to go to dinner with Steph anyway, as I wanted to catch up with her. When I sat down across from her at the restaurant, my phone started buzzing. I mouthed, “hold on” to Steph as I stood up and answered the phone.

“This is Jane Campbell speaking…”

“No I know, Janie it’s me, I- I just needed to hear your voice” The voice on the phone, Joe, said clearly out of breath.

“Joe what’s going on? Are you okay?” I started panicking, why was he calling me. He never calls.

“It’s. I’m fine. I just- Did you see the game?” I hadn’t. I was so busy getting ready to see Steph and finishing work, that I’d completely forgotten to tune in.

“No- I- Tell me what’s happening.” I felt like screaming, what wasn’t he telling me? The walls felt like they were closing in.

“It’s Kniesy.” Two words that first had me breathing a sigh of relief and then feeling guilty as the walls crashed in once again.

“Okay,” I took a breath, “okay. What do you need from me? What happened? I’m with Steph. Do you need me to get there?”

“Just stay on the phone please. He’s. He just collapsed. I mean the hit didn’t look that bad but I guess it was? I- I don’t know Janie. I don’t know.” A sob erupted from him as he tried to keep himself composed. Where was the game again? I could have sworn I’d written it down somewhere… I looked through my bag, dumping the contents on the table in front of a concerned Steph.

“Are you still there?” His voice almost whispers, having been wrecked by his sobs.

“Yeah, I’m here Joey. Don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere.” The nickname escaped me before I even knew I was saying it. Shit.

“Joey?” His quiet voice still shaking.

“I- I mean…”

“No- I- Uh- I like it- It just caught me off guard that’s all.” His smile was clear even through the phone.

“Okay wait- The game’s in Buffalo right? Let me just… I’ll see you in a few hours, okay? What hotel are you in?” I blurted out, before I could even process what I was saying. All I know is that Joey needs me and I want to- no, have to- be there.

“You don’t have to come, I mean it’s fine. I’ll be fine.” He rushed, trying to convince me not to go, but it was too late.

“See you in a bit Joey, bye.” I quickly said, trying to hang up.

“I L-” I hung up.

“Okay Steph, I gotta go. I- uh- I’m so sorry, I’ll venmo you for the salad.” I said, grabbing my coat from the back of my chair and shoveling everything back into my bag.

“Is everything okay?” Steph said, panicking.

“Yeah, Joe’s worried about Matthew, apparently he got hurt during the game. I’m just gonna fly out to Buffalo to be with him.”

“You and Joseph, huh?” She said, winking, “I mean I told Mitch y’all were a good match, but he didn’t think it would happen this quickly…”

“Oh- Um. No, we’re not together. I mean- I don’t think he even likes me like that… Not that I like him or anything.”

“Mhm, and he called his ‘platonic roommate’ for comfort when his best friend got hurt, and, said ‘platonic roommate’ is flying to another country to check on him… Okay!”

“That’s exactly what’s happening. Plus, New York is barely another country.”

“Sure… Sure. Have a nice flight Janie.”

“Thanks.”

The flight went quicker than I expected. I sat in my seat, my knee bouncing as I waited to see Joe. I was still unsure of what happened to Matthew, but if Joe was worried, so was I. The little pest had started to grow on me.

I rushed into Joe’s hotel, asking the front desk to let me through. Joe had let them know I’d be coming and to let me in. When I got to his door, I took a breath before knocking.

“Janie, thank god.” He said, opening the door and scooping me into a big hug.

“I’m here Joey, I’m here.” He stiffened at the nickname as he released me.

“What?” I asked, confused.

“Nothing… I- I just like when you call me Joey, that’s all.” He said, letting me into his room.

“How’s Matthew?” I asked, grabbing his hand for moral support.

“The doctor said he’ll be okay, just a concussion. It just really scared me, you know? I mean one moment we were laughing about him asking a girl out, and the next he’s on the ice.”

“A girl?” I asked, waggling my eyebrows.

“Yeah, I mean it feels silly now but he wants to ask the barista at the coffee shop by the rink for dinner.” He smiled, squeezing my hand.

“That’s such a good idea omg! Not silly at all, I mean she’s really pretty and nice.”

“It just got me thinking, you know? Like what if he wasn’t okay? What if he never got to tell the girl? It feels so trivial to worry about rejection at this point.”

“But he will get to tell her Joey. And she’ll say yes and it’ll be great and they’ll be together!” I’m not sure where he’s going with this, but I’m doing my best to reassure him that Kniesy and the Barista will get together in the end.

“Will they?” He asks, furrowing his brows.

“Of course, if they’re meant for eachother, it’ll happen.” I smiled, looking up at him, my hand still in his.

“Will we?” He asks.

“Will we do what?” I ask, confused.

“Will we get together?” He asks and my stomach flutters.

“Joey?” I feel like I’m hallucinating there’s no way he means what I think he means.

“Jane. Janie. I love you. Every moment we’re apart is like I'm drowning and you’re my air.” He grabs my face, angling my eyes up to his.

“Joey… I love you too.” I closed my eyes as our lips met, fireworks erupting as the butterflies dissipated from my stomach.

August 7, 2006

Sidney was pacing out side the hospital walls, hearing the screams of Jasmine, who has been in labor for 17 hours now. Sidney had sent home his parents and younger sister as they had been with they all day and he wanted them to at least get some sleep.

Sidney’s head snapped up as the door opened and one of the nurses walked out, “Mr. Crosby, your daughters been born.” The woman gave him a kind smile.

“Daughter!” Sidney choked out as Jasmine didn’t want to find out the gender as she didn’t care for it.

Sidney shook his head pushing back the emotions, “Can i see her.” Sidney questioned looking desperately towards the nurse.

“Of course.” The nurse kindly replied and gestured for him to walk into the room.

Sidney walked in and only spared a single glance at his ex-girlfriend, who was turned away from the door and away from the bassinet that had his newborn daughter in it.

Sidney took slow steps and looked down and saw the most precious thing in the whole work, Sidney knew his daughter has already stolen his heart and nothing was more important to him then her, he gently picked her up and she made a small cooing sound as her little fingers wrapped around his finger.

“Hello Cameron.” Sidney lovingly mumbled, letting out a watery laugh as he feels his cheeks wet from his tears.

He has picked out the name when he found out about her, He loved it because it fit for a girl or a boy name, just like his.

“Sir?” One of the nurses kindly called out gaining his attention, “You have to write out full name and as Ms. Waters has signed away all of her rights so you will need to sign this for the birth certificate.” The nurse set down the papers in front of her him and handed him the pen.

Sidney nodded and shifted his daughter carefully to his one arm and picked the pen up in the other hand, he wrote out her name, Cameron Taylor Crosby. And signed everything he needed too and handed the papers back to the nurse.

“We just need to clean her up and give her a checkup and you’re good to bring her home dad.” Another nurse kindly told Sidney and stretched her hands out towards to take Cameron, Sidney hesitated not liking the idea of letting go of his daughter.

The nurse just calmly smiled because she is use to parents not wanting to let go of their kids, “Why don’t you come with us.” She kindly suggested and Sidney quickly nodded and followed the nurses out of the room not even sparing a glance at his ex, he picked up his back pack swinging it onto his shoulder.

Sidney followed them into the room and gently and reluctantly set his daughter onto the bed, he stayed closed by her side tho and let her fingers stay gently wrapped around his finger.

The nurse started doing a thorough check up on the newborn making sure everything was good and she was healthy before she then started cleaning her up, “Do you have an outfit to bring her home in?” The nurse asked him as many parents will bring in an outfit to bring their baby’s home or the hospital will give them one.

Sidney nodded and opened his backpack pulling out a white and pastel yellow onesie that has little flowers on it, the nurse helped him put it onto Cameron.

The nurse then made sure she went over everything with him as she could tell he was nervous and she knew he was a single father so she wanted him to feel prepared.

“And you are ready to take your girl home.” The nurse kindly told Sidney making him smile, he nodded and thanked the nurse before he started the walked out of the room and down the hallway towards the front of the hospital, he walked out of the front doors and to his car.

Sidney opened the back door and gently laid his newborn daughter into her new car seat and he gently caressed her tiny and soft cheek and gave her one more lovingly smile before he shut the door and he walked around putting all of his stuff into the car before he got into the driver seat.

Sidney took a nervous breath as he turned on the car and slowly and cautiously pulled out of the parking spot and drove the short drive to his house in Nova Scotia, he had recently bought his own house in his home town and bought a house in Pittsburgh as he wanted his daughter to have homes.

Sidney gently grabbed his peacefully sleeping newborn, he slung his bags over his shoulder.

He walked into his house for the first time with his daughter and it felt like home with her.

He set down all of his bags by the door and gently walked over to his couch and slowly sat down being mindful of his daughter in his arms.

Sidney knew he needed to tell his parents and younger sister, and his team that his daughter has been born but he wanted some time alone with Cameron, taking a moment to just have with his daughter.

Sidney slowly and gently slipped his shirt off as he read in one of the parenting books that babies enjoy skin to skin contact and he gently rested his newborn daughter on his chest and pressed a gentle kiss to her head.

Sidney knew that being a single dad and only about to start in his second NHL season, he knew it would be a lot of work but he had a good support system and it would all be worth it for his daughter.

Sidney felt his daughter squirm around slightly and he gently hummed a small soft tune and gently rubbed his tiny back and felt her let out a little puff of air before relaxing fully against him once again.

Sidney smiled contently and relaxed more into the couch and pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head and could feel his eyes slowly beginning to fall shut.

introducing august

August Catherine Crosby was born September 14, 1998 the youngest of her two siblings.

August always looked up to her older brother Sidney and he was the person who brought her onto the ice for the first time and she fell in love with the feeling of being on the ice, they both loved that they got to play together for a year in the NHL.

August and Taylor have always been close as sisters and always team up together to bully their older brother.

August growing up would spend a lot of time with her mother and grandmother in the kitchen watching them bake, August always enjoyed learning how to bake from the two and it’s something she still loves to do whenever she has the time.

August played in the OHL for the Eerie Otters and became very close with many on the team specifically Connor McDavid, Dylan Strome, and Alex DeBrincat. She also played on the national team for Canada and became very close to Mitch Marner.

August and Alex were drafted the year after the the other three and while they all got spilt across the world, August was the glue to keeping them all close to each other and being a consistent part in each others life’s.

Mitch has always loved August claiming her his favorite and he made sure everyone knew that, he desperately wanted her to get drafted to the Leafs wanting to play on the same team again. Some of his most favorite games of the season is when he plays against August.

Connor took August under his wing when she joined the OHL team and even though she was only a year younger than him he still was very protective of her and had gotten into many fights for her over the two years of playing with each other.

Dylan came back to the OHL after his draft for another season and he got to play with August and Alex for another season and win a Championship with them.

It was no surprise when Dylan had his first daughter August was named the godmother, just like it wasn’t surprising that Alex named August godmother to his first son as well, and Dylan and Alex’s second children were both named August godchildren as well.

August had a very tough rookie year being the first woman in the NHL but also being the younger sister of Sidney Crosby and she drafted to his team it came with a lot of questions, so she always makes sure she looks out for the rookies in the league especially the first overall picks knowing the pressure that comes with it.

She had texted Jack Hughes when he was in rookie and Jack instantly felt comfortable with her and she was already someone he looked up to but even more so once she started becoming like a mentor to him, they have stayed close since then and Jack adores August.

Jack is always talking about August especially to his family and they all can see how much Jack looks up to her. Jack also knows how much August is busy during of summer as she is always trying to see all of her family and godchildren and he knows she rarely ever has any free time so he will usally go to her and spend at least a week with her wherever she is and they will at least get on the ice together to practice.

Jack literally begs August to bake him anything and if they are playing each other August always has some type of baked good for him and she will usally send him boxes of her baked goods.

August knew who Quinn Hughes is, especially being close to Jack but it seemed they never could ever meet each other, she only ever saw him when they were playing against each other but they finally got introduced to each other during the 2024 All Stars, when Jack picked first for his team and quickly picked August.

Quinn has heard so much about August from Jack and he honestly has always thought she was beautiful and when they finally get to truly meet he can tell why Jack loves her so much, she’s extremely easy to love and she just seems to lighten up everything. Quinn fell for August before she fell for him.

August loved trading to the Vegas Knights and loved that she joined the first year that they were ever a team and she is proud to carry the C on her chest for her team especially as she is the only ever Captain of the Knights ever.

August was one of the biggest supporters of Knights having a team pet and helped a lot of getting a future service dog for the team and chose the name Maverick for him.

August has always loved being a godmother and is always spending any free time with her godchildren and they all always visit her a lot, she’s always spoiling them and there is not a doubt that she is all four of her godchildren’s favorite person.

Sideny’s Agent since he was young was Pat Brisson and from a young age August was around the Brisson family and grew quite close to Jordan and Brendan. August was so exicted when Brendan was drafted to Vegas and immediately told him when he came to Vegas he was staying with her. Brendan joined the Vegas AHL team after his collegiate career and moved in with August.

August was the one that suggests Brendan to her coach when they were looking for a AHL player to call up and the coach agree especially seeing how Brendan had been playing. August also was the one who passed him the puck on his first NHL goal against her brother.

March 29, 2021

August pulled out her phone after the game she just won against the Kings at home, she froze slightly seeing Dylan texted her right as the game started that Taylor had gone into labor and then texted a few minutes ago that they had their kid, August quickly headed out of the the locker room.

She called her assistant to get her a flight to Chicago as she quickly drove home and packed a small bag before quickly taking a cab to the airport seeing the flight information her assistant sent her.

August got to the airport and headed through security quickly and had a few minutes before her flight grabbed a tea and a small pastry before she started boarding her flight.

Luckily for her she had a really early game today so she will be in Chicago by tonight around 7:00 PM.

August got even luckier as the Wi-fi on the plane was quite good and she texted her Coach letting him know she won’t be in practice tomorrow, she also got some work done within in the few hour flight and before she knew they were landing already.

She was one of the first off the flight and hurried through out the airport quickly reaching outside and hopping into a cab telling him the hospital she needs to go to.

August paid the driver and walked up to the hospital and to the front desk, The nurse looked up, “Name?”

“Taylor Strome.” August replied showing the Nurse her ID, the nurse nodded and got her a pass and told August the way to the their room.

August walked down the long halls of the hospital and turned left reaching the door she was looking for she knocked on the door, She peeked her head in and felt her heart soften.

“Aug!” Dylan smiled not even suprised his best friend came out, Taylor looked up and smiled happily seeing one of her closet friends.

August smiled slowly walking in see Taylor laying in bed holding their newborn.

“You wanna hold her?” Taylor smiled at her.

“Her!” August smiled having not known the gender yet, “Please.”

Taylor gently handed over her daughter to August.

“Hi Little Love.” August gently cooed at the baby feeling then baby wrap their little fingers around her finger, “What’s her name?” August asked not looking away from the baby.

“Wesley.” Dylan proudly told her, sharing a soft look with his wife, “So you like your goddaughter?” Dylan smirked watching August’s head snap up to him.

“What!” August whispered in shock being mindful that Wesley is sleeping, “Me?” August had no clue why they would pick her to be the godmother.

“Of course Aug, there is no one else that we want to be godmother but you.” Taylor smiled having been so grateful for August, August always being the best friend you could ask for and that’s why the two was not surprised when August showed up.

“Thank you, i promise i will protect her.” August smiled feeling tears in her eyes.

“We have no doubt.” Dylan smiled squeezing her shoulder.

“I’m your Aunt Auggie.” August softly whispered holding her goddaughter in her arms she slowly swayed back and forth.

“Can you open my bag?” August asked Dylan who nodded and stood up walking over to where she set her bag down and opened it seeing a fluffy stuff animal on top and looked over at August giving her a questioning look and she nodded, he grabbed the stuff animal seeing it is a bunny and closed her bag up, he walked over and set it on the table next to August.

The bunny stuff animals ended up being Wesley’s favorite animal that she brings with her everywhere and sleeps with every night.

Brendan walked down the stairs of the house running a hand over his face having barely just woken up but had smelled food being cooked.

He walked through the large house and into the kitchen not suprised to see August cooking in the kitchen. Brendan also wasn’t suprised to see her in workout clothes no doubt she had already been on a run.

Brendan sat on the his bar stool watching someone he considers his family an older sister, cooking breakfast.

“Morning B!” August looked up from the stove smiling at one of the more important people in her life, she walked around the large island to him, she cupped his face pressing a soft kiss to the top of his fluffy dark hair, “Happy first NHL game day buddy.”

August and Brendan have always been close since they have known each other for almost their entire lives, August being three years older then Brendan she ended up becoming pretty protective of him and honestly she learned any older sister or motherly instincts she had from being around Brendan.

August made sure she had taken care of him the last few years since he came out to Vegas to play in the AHL for the silver knights, she made sure he stayed with her and really they both enjoyed living together so they didn’t have to always be alone, it’s almost been three years since he moved in with her and doesn’t plan to leave anytime soon.

“Thank you Auggie.” Brendan smiled softly leaning in the comforting touch from August, he was nervous and exicted for his first NHL game but he was also glad that August would he there with him for it.

It wouldn’t feel right without her at his first game, She came to many of his games in the program, when he played at Michigan she flew out many times to come watch him play, she was there at his draft day, August was there for his first AHL game and whenever he is playing at home and she’s free she always is coming to his games.

August has been one of his biggest supporters in his life and he is very glad that she will be on the ice with him for his NHL debut.

August was also his witness yesterday when he was signing his Entry-Level Contract to the Vegas Golden Knights.

August sent him one more smile, “I made your favorite.” August grinned as she turned around hearing the happy sound from Brendan.

“Cinnamon Blueberry Pancakes!” Brendan happily exclaimed now realizing the smell of the food. August has many recipes for more healthy foods that still taste really good so Brendan absolutely loves when August cooks or bakes for him because he gets some of his favorite foods while still in his diet.

“Of course.” August playfully scoffed at him, she flipped the last batch of the pancakes.

Brenden stood up and walked around the island to the cabinets and grabbed two plates and two cups and set them by the food before heading to the fridge and grabbing the orange juice and setting it onto the island just as August turned off the stove.

“Go on.” August fondly smiled gesturing to the food seeing him patiently waiting. Brendan perked up and quickly grabbed a few pancakes and some fruit before quickly sitting back in his seat and digging in.

August smiled shaking her head but served her self before pouring the orange juice into the glasses and sliding it across the island to Brendan.

“Thank you.” Brendan sheepishly smiled having been so excited he forgot to say thank you and grab his drink.

“Of course.” August smiled back.

The two ate in silence as Brendan quickly finished the rest of the pancakes and August sent him up to his room to go get ready for the game as she cleaned up.

August cleaned up the kitchen and headed to her room and took a body shower and she got out of her shower and started to get ready, she did very light make up and brushed out her hair adding some dry shampoo.

August slipped on a pair of dark tan trousers and a black long sleeve shirt with a black belt and black heels. She walked into the entrance way checking the time on her watch seeing they need to leave, she grabbed her purse.

“B! You ready?” August called as she grabbed her phone, August heard the sound of footsteps rush down the stairs and she looked up seeing Brendan coming down in his new suit that he got in hope to use for his first NHL game this season.

“Well?” Brendan asked nervously fiddling with the cuff links he adds to every one of his suits and is a good luck charm for him, cuff links August gifted him.

“You look very handsome.” August smiled soflty brushing a hair from his face seeing he needed a hair cut and she quickly pulled out her phone opening up her camera pointing it at him, he quickly smiled at the camera making her nod and put her phone away, “Now let’s get you to your first game B.” She smiled softly and started to walk out the house to the front driveway.

Brendan shut and locked the door behind before hopping into the passenger seat, he smiled seeing August having already put on his favorite music and she started the short drive to the Arena.

Brendan took a deep breath as they pulled into the parking lot and August parked in her spot.

“Ready Bud?” August softly asked looking over at him, Brendan took a deep breath and nodded.

They walked in together as the social media team took pictures of them walking in together.

They headed into the locker room and August smiled softly and gently pushed him to his stall giving him an encouraging look.

Brendan headed to his stall and started to get ready, August headed to her stall and get ready as well.

The whole team was walking out the ice ready for the rookie lap and to warm up after.

Brendan pushed the pucks onto the ice and stepped onto the ice starting his rookie lap.

August pushed past some of her team so she could watch his rookie lap and she smiled proudly watching him skate around the ice, she remembered the first time she saw him on the ice and it felt like a lifetime ago.

Brendan let out a breath as he stepped off the ice, August walked over to him as the rest of the team hopped onto the ice.

“Well?” August softly asked giving him a fond look.

Brendan anwsered with a beaming smile, August smiled and pulled him into a tight hug, “I’m proud of you B.” August whispered to the boy who had become her little brother, Brendan felt his smile widen always trying to make August proud of him.

“Now let’s go play your first NHL game.” August pushed him towards the ice.

Brendan smiled laughing as he got back onto the ice.

July 22, 2021

Brinley smiled as she walked out the airport with her suitcase rolling behind her she walked across the street to the pick up area and walked faster seeing Quinn leaning against his car.

“Q!” Brinley smiled seeing her best friend, they quickly met in the middle hugging each other.

“B.” Quinn whispered smiled softly holding his best friend, “He’s going to be so excited.” Quinn smiled grabbing her suitcase before she could smirking at her eye roll.

“I’m excited!” Brinely had missed seeing the Hughes family less lately, especially since she doesn’t play with Quinn anymore and they went through quarantine so they couldn’t visit, but she also is very excited to surprise Luke as he didn’t think she could come to his draft day.

Quinn smiled having always been so grateful for how loving Brinley has always been with his family. He knew how much she missed her family especially during the program and the way she fit in like a sister in his family has always warmed his heart.

Quinn especially has been grateful for how much support Brinley has always been for his brothers but also for him, Quinn has always had a hard opening up and admitting when something was wrong but Brinley seemed to never have any issues with that with Quinn and Quinn appreciates that everyday.

Quinn pulled into the driveway of his parents house and shut the car, he grabbed her bag out of the car and they walked up to the front door, Quinn opened the door and heard Luke and Jack playing a board game in the living room and his parents talking on the couch in the living room.

Quinn set her bag down by the front door and gestured for her to stay and she nodded, he made sure his footsteps were a little loud to make his family notice him walking in.

“I thought you had to go get something?” Jack looked up at Quinn, looking confused as Quinn didn’t have anything in his hands.

“I did.” Quinn smiled mischievously, “You can come in.” Quinn called out getting confused looks from the four.

Brinley walked into the room making Luke jump up and almost tackle them both to the ground, “Brinny!” Luke held onto her tightly having been quite sad when she said she couldn’t make it to his draft.

“Hi Lu.” Brinely smiled hugging him tightly back before reluctantly letting go and turning to Jack who was waiting and opened up her arms and Jack smiled widely quickly lunging into her arms hugging her tightly.

“Hi Brin.” Jack whispered hugging her tightly.

“JJ!” Brinely smiled pulling back from the hug and lifted her hand ruffling Jacks hair making him groan and her laugh.

Luke waited until Jack and Brinley stopped hugging and stepped back right against her side even though he saw his parents stand up to say hi to her.

“Brinley.” Ellen smiled pulling her into a hug, Brinley smiled hugging her back and she turned to Jim and they nodded at each other with a smile and fist bumped.

“What are you doing here?” Luke questioned looking at Brinley.

“What and miss your draft day?” Brinely teased him softly booping his nose, she truthfully was busy on the draft day with an important meeting but she finally managed to get it switched so she come out here, which she was grateful for especially since she made it Quinn and Jack’s draft she didn’t want to miss Luke’s.

“Thank you.” Luke softy whispered to her, happy that one of his biggest role models will be there on his big day.

“Always Lukey.” Brinley whispered back, truthfully she loved Luke as another part of her family and he’s always had a fond spot in her heart.

Luke smiled before holding onto her arm and dragging her over to where Jack and Luke were playing a board game, “Your on my team Brinny.” Luke demanded with a puppy eyes towards her.

Brinely let out a laugh but nodded easily agreeing.

Jack groaned dramatically in protest, “No way! That’s like an automatic win for you!” Everyone knew how good Brinely was at board games and Luke always wanted to be teammates with Brinely.

“I’ll play on your team.” Quinn offered sitting down next to Jack.

Jack just groaned even more throwing his hands up, “That’s not gonna change anything Quinny.” Jack sassed at his big brother, Quinn just shook his head and rolled his eyes fondly at his little brother.

Brinely and Luke shared a laugh trying not to burst out in laughter.

And Jack was right. Brinley and Luke did end up winning ever game they played before they all called it quits to head up to bed.

Brinely got dressed into pajamas and laid down in the guest room that she use to live in when she lived with the Hughes family.

July 23, 2021

Brinley woke up the sun shinning in her eyes, she groaned covering her face. She heard her door being quietly opened and then shut, she felt some sit down on her bed and lay down next to her, she felt a head of curls lay against her chest and knew exactly who it was, Brinely hand started playing with his curls.

Brinely remembered the days she lived with the Hughes and many times Luke would sneak into her room and lay next to her, a lot of the times he was anxious over something and couldn’t sleep so he came and cuddled with his favorite person.

Luke took a deep breath feeling himself relaxed as he cuddled against Brinely.

Brinley just continued to play with his curls feeling Luke seem to relax more and more, She knew he was anxious as she’s known him for the last five years and she knows very well his anxious ticks.

Luke hid his face against her shoulder, “What if i don’t go high.” Luke mumbled nervously, been worried for a while if he didn’t go high like his brothers and how everyone is expecting him to go.

“Than you don’t.” Brinely blunted told him, “But you’re going to because you are an amazing hockey player Luke and any team is going to be very lucky to have you.” Brinely knew how much of an amazing player Luke was and felt bad that he was injured for big portion of his draft year making him not be able to really fight for the number one pick.

“Thank you.” Luke breathed out honestly just needing someone to reassure him and it always calmed him down better when Brinley was the one.

“Now go to sleep we have a few hours.” Brinely ruffled his hair seeing its barely six am and that’s way to early for either of them to be up.

“Good idea.” Luke mumbled half asleep.

Octavia woke up to the sound of familiar sound of rain, she shifted slightly feeling Louie in a little ball laying againt Octavia’s side. Octavia fondly smiled having less alone with having her Louie with her everyday.

Octavia checked her phone seeing it was already past 10:00 am as she didn’t have a morning practice today and her team was given an rest day before the Devils game tomorrow, she knew she did have to get up and start her day as she can finally see her twin after two months and Jack as she’s picking them up after their practice to spend the day and night with them.

Octavia started sitting up and felt her puppy stir slightly, Octavia got up and headed to the bathroom doing her morning routine before heading back into her bedroom and slipping on her slippers and Quinn’s hoodie, she could she Louie wide awake starting towards her as she came out to the bathroom.

“Hi Lou.” Octavia cooed softly giving her child lots of pets and straches, “Do you need to go outside?” Louie barked once making Octavia laugh as she picked him up.

Octavia walked out of her bedroom and down the hallway to her art room. The Art room has a covered balcony and Octavia turned it into a little run for Louie as most mornings in Toronto is raining or snowing and Louie gets cold to fast to try and make him go to the bathroom in the snow.

Octavia set him down on the fake grass, and let him do his business as she stepped inside the art room leaving the door open until Louie was done. She heard a small little bark and looked over seeing Louie patiently sitting at the door waiting to come, “Come in love.” Louie quickly trotted over to her nudging his head at her legs making her smile and pick him up.

They headed down to the hall into the kitchen, she turned her coffee machine on and started brewing her coffee. Octavia scooped dog food setting it into Louie’s bowl making sure the other was filled with water, she set him down letting him have breakfast.

Octavia happily took her first sip of her coffee before dreading to make breakfast but knew she couldn’t just have coffee for breakfast, she quickly make a simple piece of toast and sat on her couch enjoying her piece of toast and coffee before feeling little paws and looked down seeing Louie done with his breakfast and waiting to be picked up, Octavia picked him up and could tell he was cold, Louie quickly dove into the front pocket of her hoodie his whole body easily fitting in the pocket and warming up quickly.

Octavia scrolled her phone drinking her coffee for a while as Louie contently warmed up in her pocket.

Octavia may of ended up sitting there for an hour before reluctantly getting up, Louie still laying in her pocket. She set her mug in the sink before heading back into her bedroom, she quickly changed into grey sweatpants, a white hoodie, and slipped on her black high top converses

She picked Louie up and brought him to her bed laying him down and covering him up completely with the comforter, “I’ll be back soon.” She pressed a kiss to his fluffy head and walked out of her room grabbing her keys and wallet putting it into her pocket, she grabbed her leather jacket that was hanging on the hook by the door putting it on before locking her apartment door and heading out of the building into the parking garage and getting into the car.

She drove the short distance to the Maple Leafs Arena and parking in the garage, she got out of her car and walked through the halls saying her hellos to a lot of the staff as she walked in. Octavia saw the Devils weren’t on the ice meaning they were done with practice and getting cleaned up in the lcoker room.

Octavia only waited a few minutes before Nico and Jack walked out, Jack smiled at this sister walking over to her pulling her into a hug, “Hi Moony.” Jack smiled pulling back from his sister.

“Hi Rowdy.” Octavia smiled slightly nodding at brother, looking at Nico and giving him a fist bump, a lot of the Devils players were alreadly walking out by the time Luke came out.

Luke smiled wildly at the sight is his twin sister, they quickly hugged each other tightly, both relaxing into the hug, “Hey Win.” Luke pressed a kiss to the side of her head.

“Hi Lucky.” Octavia smiled in the hug holding her twin tightly. They pulled away from the hug reluctantly, and turned to Jack ready to start leaving when a voice called Octavia’s name.

“Octavia?” Simon accent rang out in the hallway when he called out her name, knowing that shade of blonde hair anyway, especially because he knows she’s part of the Maple Leafs.

Octavia quickly turned around at the sound of the accent, “Simon.” Octavia breathed out with a smile forming on her face, she quickly walked over to him as he gently pulled her into a hug, “Hi.” Octavia whispered having knowing she would see him this weekend but didn’t know when.

“Hi.” Simon smiled back as they pulled out of the hug, “It’s been a while.” Simon crookedly grin at the girl he’s had a crush on for years now.

“It has.” Octavia smiled softly, something that she doesn’t do often.

Luke raised an eyebrow at his twin and his teammate trying to figure out how they know evan other, “How do you know each other?” Luke questioned.

Octavia turned her head looking at her twin like he is stupid, “Really?” She gave him a certain a look making his eyes widen looking towards Simon.

“Wait my teammate Simon, is that Simon!” Luke realized looking at his sister.

“He was my friend first.” Octavia sassed back to her twin. Jack and Nico shared a look, having an idea something is between Simon and Octavia.

“That Simon?” Simon mischievously smiled at her, Octavia fondly rolled her eyes feeling her cheeks warm, she pushed him gently with her arm, “Shush you.” Luke smiled at his sister seeing her with the person she hasn’t stop talking about the last four years.

“Wait how do you meet each other?” Jack crossed his arms playing his protective big brother making Octavia roll her eyes at him.

“We played against each other a few years ago in WJC.” Simon explained not telling them how he truthfully met Octavia, Octavia smiled slighty enjoying he kept it to them.

“Alright Louie is waiting for us.” Octavia reminded her brothers, ignoring the red on her cheeks and the pounding of her heat as she stood next to Simon.

“Lou Dog! What are we waiting for.” Jack cheered excitedly always loving that little sausage dog.

“See you on the ice tomorrow?” Simon softly asked her, Octavia nodded with a little smile before starting walking away with her brothers.

“Do not say a word.” Octavia hissed at her two brothers as they started walking away.

“Wait but how didn’t i know that your Simon is my teammate!” Luke whispered over to his twin, trying to figure out how he never knew.

“I thought you knew!” Octavia exclaimed back, “I didn’t know that you didn’t.”

“That’s explains a lot.” Luke slowly nodded thinking about when Simon asked about Octavia and he was confused how Simon knew her.

“Your Simon?” Jack teasingly smirked at his baby sister enjoying all of this.

“No.” Octavia blunted replied rolling her eyes at Jack.

Jack just smirked seeing the slight red on her cheeks and was enjoying his sister actually having something that he could tease her about.

December 3, 2019

August knew what it’s like to be a number one draft pick and the pressure that comes with it, that she has made sure to be their for the rookies in the league but especially for the number one picks.

She seemed to click the fastest with Jack Hughes, August asked the Devils for his number and she immediately contacted him the night of the draft congratulating him and she continued to keep talking to Jack and Jack started to just ask and talk about everything with August, finding a extreme comfort from her even over the phone.

Jack had a really bad start in his rookie season and has felt down so many times and every time August always seemed to know and would contact him.

Ellen and Jim heard how exicted Jack was on his draft night when August had texted him but they started seeing how much Jack started to grow to love August like a sister and they could see how much she was helping Jack.

Jack was always talking about August to his family and they could all see how important she was to Jack.

August was excited to finally meet Jack in person as they haven’t met yet in perosn only texting and facetiming and she was looking forward to play against him on the ice.

August looked over on the ice seeing Jack on the ice and she waved softly at him, Jack grinned waving back happily.

August was happy how her team ended up playing and she had a goal and two assists at the end of the game, The Knights winning 4-3 against the Devils.

August luckily didn’t have any media that night and quickly showered and got dressed hurrying outside the locker room and she went down the hallway to the Devils locker room when she heard a small sniffle.

August frowned turning her head towards the sound and walked down a smaller hallway that was empty of people and she looked at the end of the hallway seeing a small figure sitting on the floor holding their knees to their chest and crying.

“Are you alright?” August gently asked seeing the boy, she kneeled down in front of him.

Jack’s head shot up and he quickly started wiping his tears before relaxing slightly seeing August, “Hi.” Jack croaked out.

“Hi Jack.” August felt her whole face soften seeing him and noticing how upset Jack looked, she sat down next to him leaning against the wall, she tentatively put her arm around his shoulder and felt him completely relax into her side cuddling closer to her.

“What’s wrong buddy?” August softly questioned she started to gently play with his hair.

“I played so bad, i lost the puck to much, i didn’t even take a shot at the goal.” Jack rushed out feeling extremely overwhelmed.

“Look at me Jack.” August softly demanded, Jack looked up at her, “You are just getting started Jack Hughes, you’re an amazing player and it’s okay to make mistakes your learning still. Everyone makes mistakes but is what you do to fix it that matters.” August knew how much pressure it was being a rookie but especially a first overall, she also knows that any mistakes as rookie were always held over your head.

“But-“ Jack protested.

“Do you think you would be a first overall playing in the NHL if you weren’t a good player, Jack you are an insanely amazing player.” August cut him off gently, she gently reassured him.

“Thank you.” Jack softly mumbled feeling a bit better being reassured by August, knowing that August would tell him the truth.

“Always J, Always.” August softly promised him, “Why don’t you go take a shower and get dressed because i owe you dinner.” August had promised Jack to spend the afternoon and night with Jack as the game was a early game and they were both off tomorrow.

“Okay.” Jack nodded looking excited to spend time with August he hurried and got up, handing a hand down to August helping her up.

“I’ll wait for you.” August told Jack as they walked to his locker room, “No rush!” August reassured him seeing Jack looking like he was going to rush.

Jack nodded and pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek and headed into the locker room to quickly shower.

Nico Hischier walked out of the locker room and he smiled seeing August, “Auggie!”

August looked up and smiled happily seeing one of her favorite people, “Neeks!” August and Nico tightly hugged each other haven’t seen each other for a bit awhile.

“Gonna have dinner with Jack?” Nico questioned having been out to dinner many times with August after games and he knew she would be close to Jack. Nico was glad his teammate had someone he is comfortable to talk to and Nico knows August is exactly that.

“Yeah, you know you are more than welcome to join.” August offered again, Nico shook his head with a smile wanting to let Jack have some one on one time with August.

“That’s okay Auggie.” Nico smiled soflty declining the offer, he wanted Jack to be able to spend time with only August.

Jack walked out a few minutes later seeing Nico and August chatting outside the locker room, he walked over to them.

“Ready bud?” August smiled looking towards Jack, Jack nodded and smiled back, “Bye Neeks.” August gave Nico one more hug before wrapping her arm around Jack’s shoulder walking out with him.

“Pizza?” August softly whispered to Jack as they walked out to his car. August knowing a cheat meal would be a good distraction for Jack right now and just let him enjoy a meal.

“Yeah!” Jack smiled excitedly for a cheat meal and especially pizza.

“Good.” August hoped into the passenger seat as Jack got into the drivers seat and started the drive to his favorite little pizza shop in New Jersey.

Jack pulled up to the pizza shop and hoped out of the car with August, they walked up to the shop and they both ordered multiple diffent slices of pizza.

“It was my treat.” August gave him a stern look as she put her card in not letting Jack pay.

“Thank you.” Jack smiled at August as they waited for their food. August smiled back ruffling his hair.

August grabbed their food and walked out the door Jack held open for her and they headed to a bench that faced the river.

August and Jack both let out a satisfied sounds as they bite into their pizza slices.

Jack rested his head on her shoulder as they ate their pizza looking out to the water.

July 2, 2024

Octavia was sitting out of the dock by the lake watching the sun setting as most of the boys were out sitting around the fire just chatting.

Octavia had her knees pulled up to her chest resting her chin on her knees enjoying the piece and quiet at the dock.

Simon was sitting in between Luke and Alex Holtz but he looked over at the dock seeing Octavia sitting all alone, he got up grabbing the blanket he had over him, he petted Louie who was sleeping on Quinn’s lap.

Simon walked down the grass hill to Octavia ignoring the questions he was getting and he plopped down next to Octavia covering her shoulders with the blanket, Octavia looked over seeing Simon giving her a soft look and gently bumping her shoulder with his.

“Is that a thing?” Trevor questioned as they all watched Simon walk away and sit right next to Octavia. Trevor knew how much Octavia was not a people person and was surprised that she let Simon sit right next to her and hug her the other day. It also made him feel old as he remembered meeting the twins when they were only fourteen and now they are both twenty already.

“It will be.” Two voices spoke at the exact same time, Luke and Juraj, the two who know exactly what is going on between Octavia and Simon.

“Already? They just met.” Cole questioned knowing that Octavia had only met Simon this season when Luke met him. Cole also knew Octavia would never be that comfortable with someone she just met.

“They met years ago.” Juraj shook his head correcting his teammate. Juraj has heard all about Octavia many times from Simon.

“They did?” Alex Holtz questioned looking interested, He’s become quite close with Luke and Simon and he’s heard so many stories and things about Octavia from Luke.

“Yeah before we got drafted.” Luke told the group, his eyes on the two and smiling slightly as watched his twin interact with Simon.

“Holy shit.” Trevor cursed as they all looked at Simon and Octavia.

Octavia was laughing loudly and her smile was bright as she laughed looking at Simon, who was staring at her with a soft smile. Octavia slowly stopped laughing and her head rested on Simon’s shoulder.

Octavia very rarely laughed out loud besides a rare snicker or a puff of air, so for Simon to get her to laugh so loud, smile so bright and for her to willingly touch him was something only Luke could ever do.

Quinn felt a smile spread across his face seeing his sister happier with Simon than he ever sees with anyone that is not Luke, he knew right then that no one would he better for his sister than Simon.

Jack smiled bittersweet he could tell Octavia had feelings for Simon and it made him remember that his twins aren’t so little anymore.

Luke smiled contently watching his twin being happy, that’s all he wants.
