In the distance you can see The Torri dei Salvucci, built in the XIII century, also called the “Torri Gemelle.” They belonged to the most important Ghibelline family in the city, the Salvucci. They had become rich through usury and commerce. I’m currently in the preproduction stages of my documentary film series on The World Trade Center. Majority of my film will discuss the original WTC Complex. The tearing down of radio row (where America’s first radios and televisions were sold to make room for a 16 acre mixed use complex where two of the tallest buildings in the world were to stand. The meticulous development and construction, the extending of the shoreline and the development of Battery Park City and The World Financial Centers. The September 11th attacks in 2001 and the construction of the new WTC Complex. The premiere will be in New York City on September 11th, 2021 for the 20 year anniversary. More details will follow. Last night, One Woodward Avenue was aglow in red, white and blue to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic and life-altering events of September 11, 2001. Quite fitting, if you know the history. One Woodward, completed in 1962, was designed by Japanese-American architect, Minoru Yamasaki, as the headquarters of the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, or MichCon for us locals. It would serve as a blueprint for a much larger commission that Yamasaki would receive that same year, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Our Adaptive Reuse / Historic Preservation studio is truly honored to be working with Oberlin College on the restoration of the King Memorial Building. The building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki in his mid-career while he was also working on the designs for The World Trade Center towers in New York City. The same iconic Modern Gothic style was implemented in both designs with tall narrow windows which he attributed to his fear of heights. The 55 year old building was dedicated to Henry Churchill King who served as the College’s president for 25 years and remains a jewel on the campus of Oberlin College. In 1997 I was a kid full of hopes and dreams, and landed a dream job at a Wall St. M&A boutique. Every year, religiously, the partners and I would head over to the World Financial Center for a seared tuna steak. Already a skyscraper enthusiast, I repeatedly marveled at the simplicity and elegance of the Twin Towers in particular. . . Last night on top of the Battery Parking Garage. The twin beams reached up to four miles into the sky and were comprised of 88 xenon search lights positioned into two 48ft (15m) squares — roughly 1/4 of the footprint of the actual towers. ⁠ ⁠ Since it's the migration season for birds, many of them get confused by the lights, which can lead to their death (New York Times say up to 160.000 birds are endangered each year).⁠
