Unsurprisingly, the leading health problems that afflict dachshunds are related to the spine. Their long backs and short legs make them prone to slipped discs, which can then cause complete posterior paralysis.

What diseases are dachshunds prone to?

Dachshund Puppies for Sale NC Intervertebral disc disease: Intervertebral disc disease causes the discs between the vertebrae to bulge or rupture. When this happens, it can cause pain, nerve damage, and paralysis. Sometimes IVDD is mild and can be relieved with crate rest and medication, but dogs with severe cases may need surgery or the use of a wheelchair. If your dachshund has trouble walking, refuses to jump, is incontinent, not eating, or seems anxious, he should be taken to the vet as soon as possible.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are two of the most common skeletal conditions seen in dogs. Surgery may be performed to fix the joint if it is diagnosed before the onset of arthritis. If you are rescuing a dachshund, have him checked by a vet for dysplasia or sensitivity so you know what he will handle in terms of activities and exercise.

Legg-Calve-Perthes: This is a condition that causes spontaneous degeneration of the head of the femur (located in a dog's hind leg). Over time, this will lead to hip erosion and arthritis. A dachshund suffering from Legg-Calve-Perthes limps, limps when walking, and experiences pain when moving the hip joint. Surgery is the most effective treatment for the disorder.

Brittle Bone Disease: Also known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a genetic disease that disrupts the normal development of collagen. This causes thin and brittle bones and teeth. There is no cure for brittle bone disease, but if you treat your dog carefully and properly, he can still live a normal life.

Others: patellar luxation (where the kneecaps loosen - often seen in dachshunds as their short legs change the angle of the patella), obesity, epilepsy, urinary stones, and eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) which can lead to blindness. To identify some of these problems, the vet may recommend hip, elbow, spine, and eye tests for the dog
