The (no spoilers) thing you need to know about Carmilla for the those who are planning to listen to it is: you know everything people say about Dracula characters being stupid for not knowing they're in the novel Dracula + not knowing vampires exist? I'm sorry but in Carmilla it's actually true. I didn't say I didn't enjoy it but these people are not very smart at all.

In 1871, irish author Sheridan LeFanu began publishing a Dr. Hesselius' retelling of a certain Laura's experiences with the vampire Mircalla Karnstein (whom she knew by the name of Carmilla). But now my attention turns towards another nested narrative: General Spielsdorf's. His niece, Bertha, had recently died, a victim of the "hellish arts" of the vampire. It is her story with Mircalla (whom she knew as Millarca) that I'd like to explore and give proper attention to, dig up from underneath the weight of three prejudiced 19th century men.

i've now published my entry for the queer vampire jam! bertha is a visual novel retelling / expansion of a nested story within carmilla. really liked working on this, hope you like reading it too :)

Hello supernatural creatures person what is your thoughts on Carmilla

Hello! What a fun question. I think that Carmilla the novel is fun but has a rather unsatisfying ending (I don't mean the Carmilla getting killed, necessarily, just the complete cutting away from the action). But Carmilla the character is a fantastic first generation literary vampire to me!

Folkloric vampires were rarely beautiful and rarely female. But folklore is full of beautiful supernatural women who want to drain your life force and it feels to me like LeFanu was drawing from actual vampire lore as well as some more broader folklore to create Carmilla, who is fantastically interesting:

She's a countess who died young, at the hand (or fang) of a vampire.

She's beautiful.

She only feeds on women.

She beguiles some of her victims to feed on them for a longer time while killing others quickly.

While she looks sickly when she has not fed, sleeps a lot during the day and prefers being up at night, she looks and feels fully alive.

Even in her coffin (where she sleeps in inches of blood) she looks as if she is alive and breathing, with her eyes open.

She can turn into a cat.

She's incredibly strong and persuasive.

It is particularly interesting to me that Carmilla, of all her victims and conquests, seems to genuinely prefer Laura. Her obsessive, adoring speeches do not seem subtle enough to be deceitful. Le Fanu mentions that slowly dying from being fed on by a vampire will turn you into one, so I think Carmilla fully intends to keep Laura at her side for all eternity. And it makes sense that she'd prefer Laura above everyone else. Because it is revealed that Laura shares Carmilla's bloodline. Slavic vampires almost always prefer feeding on their family members or spouses and the change from immediate family to a far removed descendant is delightful to me.

So yes, I genuinely adore her as the sire of all female literary vampires. Great stuff. But she should really work on her pseudonym game. The whole Mircalla/Millarca/Carmilla gambit is really not working for her

I know carmilla is the standout character in her titular novella but honestly laura is so iconic. she has such a classic case of "love/hate homoerotic relationship with her best friend as a teen" syndrome. carmilla kisses her all over her face, says "you're mine and we'll be one forever," falls back into a chair while panting and heaving, and laura says "yknow, I think of you more as a sister." for a while her genuine hypothesis to explain carmilla's behavior is "maybe she's a male suitor in disguise." the general arrives and tells her this long story about how a girl called "millarca" inserted herself into his home and slowly killed his daughter by feeding on her and giving her the exact same symptoms that laura has been feeling for weeks and her internal monologue is just "wow that's crazy. I'm bored, where's carmilla?"

Dracula: "I don't care who she is. I care where she is. Where is she, Carmilla, your dessicated little ex-playmate?"
