I really enjoy reading autobiographies of astronauts and all the other books about them. These are highly intelligent people who, by the nature of their selection and training, are also very level-headed, thoughtful, philosophical folks. Not to mention godamn near superhuman sometimes.
Alan Bean, fourth man to walk on the moon, said that the key to leadership is forcing yourself to take an interest in and care about every person on the team. Astronaut Mike Massimino talked about learning this from Bean in his own book, calling it his Bank of Good Thoughts about his coworkers.
So when tensions rise, you can go to the bank and withdraw a few of those good thoughts, remember that these are good people and everyone makes mistakes or is a bit of an ass sometimes.
Today was an absolute shit show at work. I could've easily blown my stack, but thanks to Alan and Mike, and my decision to follow their advice years ago, I went to the bank and remembered nobody fucks up on purpose. And we're all on the same team.
No need to blow up, no need to meltdown, just remember you've been to their house for backyard barbecues and work the problem. No big deal in the large scale of things

Headcanons: The Leverage team as readers
Nate: Nate's not a big reader, but will occasionally read dense some dense new tome on white collar crime or US politics. Once a year or so, he'll crack open a dense sci-fi classic like Neuromancer.
Sophie: Has a whole shelf of acting books like Blumenfeld's Accents for Actors and that collection on Stella Adler. She reads memoirs of various famous people for work - it's a great way to pick up tidbits of flavor she can bring to cons. When not reading for work, Sophie's partial to untranslated foreign-language literature, especially Russian. We know how she feels about wellness scams specifically, so I think she's read books like The Gospel of Wellness. She has a battered copy of the Nagoski sisters Burnout next to a small library of workout DVDs. When she's really down in the dumps, she'll pick up a romance with half-dressed men and women in bodices on the cover. She sometimes picks up books like The Body Keeps the Score and Unmasking Autism, which she reads mainly to leave sitting around the office in the hopes that some specific other person will read them.
Hardison: Hardison loves modern science fiction, although he generally avoids anything that's too technical because he can't keep himself from picking it apart. (The exception is Andy Weir. He loves Andy Weir.) He likes Star Trek tie-in novels (only the good ones), Cixin Liu, Ann Leckie, and The Expanse. He'll also occasionally dip his toes into scientist or astronaut memoir or non-fiction about crime (he likes Mike Massimino's memoir and tell-alls on Theranos and Scientology, specifically). He loves Murderbot and has somehow managed to convince both Parker and Eliot to read it.
Eliot: Eliot wouldn't deny reading, but you certainly won't catch him doing it. He's partial to food-related microhistories - he's read every Mark Kurlansky book. He's read Emily Nagoski's Come as You Are and is not ashamed about it. He has a sticky-noted, dog-eared copies of The Professional Chef and Mastering the Art of French Cooking in his kitchen, but nothing else - beyond the basics, he mostly cooks on vibes. Every language he knows he's either learned through whatever the US government recommends or through an ex. He read the first Murderbot book because he lost a bet to Hardison. He'll never confess to also having read all of the rest of them, and enjoying them.
Parker: Parker is either reading nothing or spending all her free time reading - there's nothing in between. She's read a few books on crypto because she wants to understand it, but she just doesn't get the appeal. (It's not cash, you see.) Parker has also read all of the Murderbot books, because Hardison got her into them. Parker loves Murderbot.

STS-400: The planned (if needed) rescue of STS-125
Tumblr media
Unofficial crew patch *
Tumblr media
On LC-39A STS-125 Atlantis (left) and on LC-39B is STS-400 Endeavour (right).
In the wake of the Columbia Tragedy, NASA prepared several contingency missions in the event a shuttle could not return safely. Most of the shuttle missions post STS-107, involved the construction/support of the International Space Station. If there were any instances where the shuttle was deemed unfit to return safely, the crew would stay on the ISS until a relief shuttle could be sent. However, STS-125 Atlantis was to service the Hubble Space Telescope and was not on the same orbital plane as the ISS. The Atlantis wouldn't have enough fuel to reach the station, so another Shuttle (Endeavour) was kept on standby on LC-39B. STS-400 would have been crewed by Christopher Ferguson, Eric A. Boe, Robert S. Kimbrough and Stephen G. Bowen.
Tumblr media
On the first day, the crew of Atlantis would use the Canadarm to inspect the bottom of the shuttle for damage to the Thermal Protection System. Had there been any damage deemed unrepairable, the plan was to launch Endeavour 5 days later. Atlantis would be put into powered-down mode to conserve power and consumables.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Endeavour will have Altitude Control with Atlantis serving as a Micro-Meteoroid Orbiting Debris shield.
"On flight day two, Endeavour would have performed the rendezvous and grapple with Atlantis."

Crew locations during EVA-1
"On flight day three, the first EVA would have been performed. During the first EVA, Megan McArthur, Andrew Feustel and John Grunsfeld would have set up a tether between the airlocks. They would have also transferred a large size Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) and, after McArthur had repressurized, transferred McArthur's EMU back to Atlantis. Afterwards they would have repressurized on Endeavour, ending flight day two activities."

Crew locations during EVA-3
"The final two EVA were planned for flight day three. During the first, Grunsfeld would have depressurized on Endeavour in order to assist Gregory Johnson and Michael Massimino in transferring an EMU to Atlantis. He and Johnson would then repressurize on Endeavour, and Massimino would have gone back to Atlantis. He, along with Scott Altman and Michael Good would have taken the rest of the equipment and themselves to Endeavour during the final EVA. They would have been standing by in case the RMS system should malfunction. The damaged orbiter would have been commanded by the ground to deorbit and go through landing procedures over the Pacific, with the impact area being north of Hawaii. On flight day five, Endeavour would have had a full heat shield inspection, and land on flight day eight."
Information from Wikipedia link
Tumblr media
STS-400 Middeck Seating
The additional crew members on Endeavour would have been accommodated via additional seats installed on the middeck. The autopilot onboard Atlantis would be used to de-orbit the orbiter tail first, to destroy it over a region north of Hawaii, in the Pacific Ocean.

Another unofficial crew patch.

View from LC-39B of the launch of STS-125 Atlantis on May 11, 2009. This was the fifth and final Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.
Fortunately, STS-400 was not needed and Endeavour was returned to the VAB from LC-39B for STS-127.
* "As a contingency mission, STS-400 was not given official support by NASA for the production of a crew patch or emblem. However this artwork was created for use by the mission team as an unofficial emblem by Mike Okuda [the same person who worked on Star Trek and most of the LCARS], who also illustrated the official patch of STS-125, the flight to be rescued by STS-400."

Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist. Her photos, videos, and words have appeared in print or online for Travel + Leisure, Time, Los Angeles Times, Glamour, and many more. You'll usually find her in an airport. If you do see her there, please say hello. Tuesday marks the very first National Lose the Jet Lag Day — a holiday we can absolutely get behind. But we’re not the only ones honoring this momentous day, the United Family of Cards from Chase is celebrating too, by giving away 1 million United MileagePlus Miles to one lucky winner. All you need to do to enter is pledge to fight jet lag like a pro in 2023. “....[T]he turn of the new year is the perfect time to commit to getting the most out of travel,” Laurinda Rainey, the general manager of United Co-Brand Cards at Chase, shared in a statement. “We are excited to launch this Sweepstakes on National Lose the Jet Lag Day to raise awareness of the impact jet lag has on travel.”  Courtesy of United Airlines The team isn’t leaving you on your own to figure out how to beat jet lag. United and Chase are teaming up with Timeshifter, a high-tech app designed by world-renowned scientists and led by  Dr. Steven W. Lockley, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and Timeshifter’s chief scientist. Its mission is to help travelers understand jet lag and tackle its underlying cause.  As a spokesperson for Timeshifter explained in a statement, “jet lag causes significant human and financial costs – from poor concentration and reduced productivity to less enjoyment and weakened immune function. Timeshifter debunks common jet lag myths and replaces them with real science, allowing travelers to control circadian rhythms by taking small actions at specific times to ensure they arrive at their best.”The app works by allowing users to input their travel plans and provides a detailed outline of when they should see light and when they shouldn’t, reminders to reset their watches, and when and if they should drink any caffeinated beverages, all to help the user rebalance to their new timezone quickly. And if you’re not sure it works, just look to Mike Massimino, a former NASA Astronaut, Timeshifter advisor, and avid user. “When I was an astronaut, we learned how to shift our circadian rhythms to prepare for rocket launches and spacewalks. Because our circadian clock regulates our sleep, alertness, and almost all other biological systems in our body, it was key to our safety, performance, and health,” Massimino shared. “It’s gratifying to see circadian science finally being applied outside of NASA to equip travelers to tackle jet lag.”  Beyond the million miles, the winner will also receive a year-long subscription to the Timeshifter jet lag app, so they can make the most of all their upcoming trips. Eight other people will also receive the subscription, along with 500,000 United MileagePlus miles. And an additional 500 people who take the pledge will win a year-long subscription to the Timeshifter jet lag app. Ready to take the pledge and enter to win? This is not a Brand new Project
Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist/science communicator, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a unique kind of computer game. The game's name is "Space Odyssey", and the team behind it hopes to develop an experience that is educational and fun about physics, biology, and space.
Players will learn about the process into vehicle and robot design as they design their own unique machine. They'll travel to other worlds in an open-world "sandbox" setting. Some may even have lives. One could be able to pilot a ship through an asteroid belt, or creating the next-generation robot capable of mining comets for valuable resources. The team is planning to incorporate virtual reality experiences too placing players at the middle of the action. Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by Loretta Falcone (rocket scientist), Janna Levin (cosmologist), Charles Liu (astrophysicist), Carolyn Porco (planetary scientist), Amy Mainzer (astronomer), Mike Massimino (science communicator) and Bill Nye (science communicator). He has also invited authors like Neil Gaiman, Larry Niven, Peter Beagle and George R. R. Martin to work on the creative world-building side. Many other artists, writers, scientists, game designers and other notable people in the scientific and creative fields are also part of the project. Talk egypt
Although this is a brand new project, it's certainly not the first example of an educational computer game. From classics such as "Oregon Trail" to modified builds of the game "Minecraft," game designers and educators have long recognized the benefits of teaching through play. But Tyson's game - the full title is "Neil deGrasse Tyson Presents: Space Odyssey - The Video Game" It looks like an especially ambitious creation.
The Kickstarter campaign, with its goal of raising $314,159 (a seemingly arbitrary amount, until you think of the pi digits), ends on Saturday, July 29. The administrators acknowledge that funding will only be part of the efforts of Whatnot Entertainment to make "Space Odyssey" possible. If all goes as planned you may soon be able to explore the world from the comfort of your sofa.
This is the most interesting thing about it: Neil deGrasse Tyson spoke on the topic "Stuff You Should Know" on the HowStuffWorks podcast. He said that he would like to expand education globally to increase the odds that human culture will produce "another Einstein."

Artemis 1, NASA, and the future of Twitter in space
Artemis 1, NASA, and the future of Twitter in space
When NASA sent Mike Massimino back to low-Earth orbit to service the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009, agency staffers asked him if he’d mind doing another chore while he was up there: draft the first tweet sent from space. Massimino said yes and didn’t think too much else about it. The New York native did remember that when he was a younger astronaut, Neil Armstrong had told him that he hadn’t…
