Inside the ‘high-conflict’ parenting class some Mass. judges require for separated couples
Tumblr media
Jenifer B. McKim
January 17, 2024
Updated  January 17, 2024
Melissa was filled with dread in early 2022 when ordered by a Massachusetts family court judge to take a parenting class with the estranged father of her child.
She had no desire to participate in sessions with the man she says abused her and her elementary school–aged child.
But fearing losing custody, Melissa — who asked us not to use her last name — agreed to pay $900 to take a remote course titled “High-conflict Parent Education” from William James College in Newton.
“I left my abuser, and I expected protection,’’ Melissa told GBH News recently. Instead, she said, “I have been court-ordered to be back in a relationship with him.”
What followed were nine weeks of 3-hour classes. The “high-conflict” parenting course involved homework assignments where parents were asked to find "positive traits" about each other, consider ways not to irritate one another, and phone calls to discuss common goals.
Supporters of the class — estimated to have been taken by some 600 parents over the last decade — say it is meant to protect children from the debilitating “toxic stress” caused by living between battling parents. But critics say the course is causing unneeded trauma, especially for victims of domestic violence.
The debate comes amid a broader discussion about how to improve court-order classes for separated parents — and, in some circles, whether there is any benefit at all. For years, divorcing parents in Massachusetts were required to take a shorter, less expensive parenting course — one of 17 states to do so. But the requirement has been suspended since 2021 over questions about the classes’ consistency and effectiveness.
Melissa is one of a handful of women who talked to GBH News about their concerns with the more intensive class for “high-conflict” parents. It's the only known such program in the state, distinctive because of its cost, length and requirement that "high-conflict" parents take the class together. All of the women say they were too frightened of repercussions to their fragile families to speak on the record. They describe the class as, “shaming,” “cult-like” and “creepy.”
Several women told GBH News they felt unsafe in the class, even when held remotely during the pandemic, sometimes forced to be in unmonitored breakout sessions with their estranged partners.
One woman from Middlesex County told GBH News said she was horrified her case’s judge ordered her to take the class. “I was very sickened that I would have to attend such an intimate class with my ex-husband, who is a very abusive man,’’ she said.
She took the class, but said it felt like a cult. “They would literally call you out, right in front of everybody and say, ‘You’re doing it wrong, you’re damaging your child. You do it our way,’” she said.
Another woman sent GBH News an essay she wrote about the experience — written to express her frustration. In it, she said, “I was instructed to write down the ways that I trigger my abuser's anger and what I can do different in the future, so my children would enjoy better academic and emotional outcomes. I was tempted to write down, ‘breathing.’”
Now a Boston College law lab is circulating a “white paper” that substantiates some of the women’s concerns. The authors say the “high-conflict” course is not regulated by the state, can take months to complete, and, “most worryingly,” forces some parents who’ve suffered domestic abuse to take classes at the same time.
“Parents ordered to take the class have legitimate worry,’’ the paper concludes. If the state suspended a parenting class out of concerns about “compliance with certification criteria,” the report questions, how can a class not regulated by the state be allowed to continue, and parents ordered by judges to participate?
Claire Donohue, an assistant clinical professor at Boston College Law School and lead author of the report, says she launched the inquiry at the behest of two former participants, one of whom was Melissa. Researchers asked for information from William James about the program, she said, but never received any documentation or response.
Donohue hopes that the report will fuel a conversation about the program and a wider debate about court-ordered parenting classes in Massachusetts.
“It feels a little weird. It’s like being sent to the school of good parenting,’’ Donohue said. “Who’s to say just because my marriage falls apart ... now all of sudden I have to open myself to the advice and the opinions of absolute strangers?”
Court officials declined to comment specifically about the Boston College report. In an email response to questions last year, court officials said the court does “not regulate or oversee” the William James course and directed a GBH News reporter to reach out to the college with further questions.
“The Probate and Family Court is aware of concerns from some [participants] and lawyers related to high conflict parenting courses,” the statement said. “The general focus of most parenting courses is to educate parents on the harm that can occur to children when exposed to parental conflict and how to co-parent.”
In July 2021, John Casey, chief justice of the Probate and Family Court, suspended the mandatory class for all divorcing parents after determining that the class could not prove its effectiveness and individual providers "failed to adhere" to reporting guidelines. The chief justice's decision followed an article published in Boston Magazine titled, “Is Massachusetts shaming divorced parents?” — a story Casey pointed to while explaining his decision.
Court officials told GBH News that they are working to re-launch the state-required program with an “updated, evidence-based” curriculum. State guidelines from 2010 mandate the program runs for at least two sessions totaling at least five hours at a cost of no more than $80 per parent, with the possibility of a fee waiver. Spouses were required to attend different sessions.
Court officials originally planned to start a new course in the fall, but delayed the launch after concerns from some legal service attorneys. The new course will apply to “married and unmarried parents where there are contested issues of custody and parenting time,” court officials told GBH News earlier in January.
Jamie Sabino, attorney with the Boston-based Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, told GBH News that a group of lawyers had raised issues with the new program, partly concerned that victims of domestic violence would feel they needed to attend courses, even separately. However, she said court officials are working to address those concerns, providing clearer notice to victims they can ask for a waiver.
Sabino says she's much more concerned about problems with the William James course.
“I’ve heard many reports of people, where there’s domestic violence, where there have been restraining orders — and they’re cooking dinner for the other side and being told they have to say nice things about their partner,” she said. “Our clients are trying to figure out how they can parent on their own after the trauma of the relationship and the divorce. And this is extremely traumatic.”

Jenifer McKim GBH News
William James officials defended the program in several emails to GBH News over the last year.
Kelly Casey, managing director of the college's Department of Forensic & Clinical Services, wrote in an email earlier this month that the course is based on a “successful” Kids First Center in Maine and was designed by experienced behavioral health practitioners.
“Research finds that children in high conflict home environments show the significant effects of psychological stress,” she wrote. “Over many years, the Courts and participants have seen great value in the program and continue to recommend it to parents and their coordinators.”
In another email last year, Jessica Greenwald O'Brien, then-director of the school’s Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law, wrote that people who have active restraining orders can ask a judge to pull them out of the class — but the judge has final say. In general, college officials don’t accept parents who have experienced “violence within the six months prior to intake,” she wrote.
“We are attempting to move coparents to a point where they can have basic, civil, information-based communications on their own regarding their children,” said O’Brien, who has since left the college for another job.
Melissa says she was required to take the class amid continuing conflicts with the father of her child, someone she never married and had been with for less than two years before their separation.
She felt obligated to comply or risk losing custody of her child. “You don’t really have a choice, especially when [the judge] says you can’t come back to court until you’ve passed the class,” she said.
In late December 2022, Melissa completed the course. It wasn’t until the following November she received notice that she had passed. She said even receiving the certification brought back unwanted emotions of dread and shame. Over the last year, she joined a group of women who connect online to discuss the trauma they experienced while in the class and seek ways to shine light on the problem.
“Everyone is complaining about it. Everyone is experiencing trauma. Everyone thinks it’s inappropriate,’’ she said. “This will keep going until we call them out.”

Hi! I wanted to ask your opinion as someone who used to live in New Jersey. I'm thinking of moving my family there. We want to get away because we currently live in a red state with horrific anti-LGBT laws, anti-abortion laws, and shamefully loose gun laws. One of the reasons New Jersey caught my eye as a possibility is that I've heard it has some of the strictest gun laws in the US (which is not saying much, but I'll take what I can get), which sounded very appealing to me. What's your opinion on the state? Is it a good place to raise children? Thank you for any advice or insight you can offer.
I lived in NJ the first twenty-three (ish, with college) years of my life, and have been gone long enough to feel comfortable to say that I lived in Middlesex County in Edison, Woodbridge, and Metuchen.
It's a good place to raise children, if you have money. Having now lived in both the north and the south for substantial amounts of time, I think it's hard for people not from the northeast to conceptualize how fucking expensive it is to live there. There's a reason that every other person you talk to in SC or FL are from NY or NJ -- people can't afford the goddamn property taxes. My wife who is from WV was astonished at how much houses cost, even before factoring in everything else. Seeing a 2-2 go for $500k in my hometown made her want to vomit.
But the money does fund the best public education system in the country. (Cue the joke about NJ's biggest export being college students.) When I graduated high school in 2011, I did so with 33 college credits. I had a genuinely good public school education, especially when compared to what I hear from friends and loved ones who weren't incubated in an ugly McMansion off the Jersey Turnpike.
NJ is also a cultural melting pot. Within 90 minutes of entering the state my body obligates me to order Indian food. Your neighbors are from all different countries and regions of the world. You will hear more languages than you knew existed.
As a child in NJ, I never saw, handled, or shot a gun. There's very little gun culture outside of people who go hunting. That's not to say there's not gun violence -- I was in Menlo Park Mall when this murder-suicide occurred in 2007, ten minutes from my house.
There's also still white supremacy. The Klan actively recruits in areas of South Jersey, was openly recruiting when I was in high school. NJ still has active sundown towns. I'd recommend staying closer to Philly or NYC, if the reason you're moving is to flee a red state with restrictive LGBTQIA and abortion laws. The western part of the state is a lot of rural communities and a lot of farm land and a lot of Trump country.
As with moving anywhere, I'd recommend researching where you're moving to very thoroughly.
It's going to be a big culture shock, especially if you're moving from a state that sees small talk as a requisite for politeness. The traffic will be terrible. All the roads have tolls, you have to buy an EZ Pass. Practice your bagel order before you get to the counter. The biggest sin is wasting someone's time.
I love SC, and want to stay and fight for the town where we currently live, which is about to host it's third annual Pride festival. The schools suck, but my wife and I are never going to agree on a working definition of a "good" school because our experiences with public education are wildly disparate. But I can sympathize with you deeply -- I have a trans son, and every time we reach a new election cycle I wince and wonder if my marriage will be undone for political scorekeeping. I don't understand the love affair with guns. I doubt I ever will. But it's worth fighting for, and right now the cost of staying in the fight isn't too high -- there are people we love in SC who are also staying to roll up their sleeves and refusing to budge.
For now.
But NJ is my home. If I could afford to live there, I would move back in a heartbeat.

ADDICTION NUMBER TWO
As crazy as it sounds even though Dub introduced me to porn Dub was not that much into it as I was.  In fact, it became an addiction for me.  I remember being in the car and hearing for the first time a yahoo® commercial.  I remember going to the computer and going to yahoo® for the first time and typing in the search bracket “naked men.”  I went crazy going from website to website looking at these men.  I had enjoyed it so much that it became a daily routine.  But it didn’t end there.  I remember in going from website to website stumbling upon a straight sex website and for the first time I saw pictures of heterosexual couples having sex.  It was new for me, but I soon became addicted to straight porn.  It wasn’t just men posing nude, but now straight couples having sex.  From there I began to also see threesomes; two women and one man.  Usually there was straight and lesbian sex happening in the pictures.  From there I stumbled onto female posing websites.  At that moment my porn watching was men posing, women posing, straight sex, and threesomes.  After seeing the lesbian pictures from the threesomes, I got curious and began my first gay search.  That was my favorite because it reminded me of what Dub and I would do.  In fact at one point, I would look at the porn to get new ideas and even new positions for the both of us.  Every time we got together; I would show him what I learned from the porn.  To me it was exciting to do what I had seen from looking at the porn.  It seemed like the tables had turned.  At the age of four he was teaching me and at the age of fourteen; I was teaching him.  Although I was still looking at the previous porn gay porn was my favorite.  I even remember looking at porn at school (Middlesex County College) and at the time I did not know the computers were monitored.  I got caught and was completely embarrassed.  I was out of control.  However, it wasn’t enough; I had gotten bored with it.  I had to keep searching for new porn.  From the age of sixteen through about nineteen had discovered a whole variety of porn.  I had seen: bestiality, incest, twins, shemales, hermaphrodites, fetishes (feet, bondage, watersports (urination), fisting, role playing, toys), group sex, bisexual, gay, lesbian, straight, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, pregnant women, midgets, foreign, domestic, old, young, and too young.  I remember the first time I came to a website and there were naked children.  I really got excited then.  By then the sex between me and Dub had ended and looking at this porn was a great memory of our past together.  It also helped me to stay in denial.  As I said before I always felt bad that Dub subjected me to something bad (wrong (sin)).  I felt better knowing that what we did together was indeed okay and not in any way bad.  So, seeing these children with each other and looking like they consented help me to believe that indeed what we (Dub and I) did was okay and is okay.  After finding it I became heavily addicted.  I began to search and search and search and every time I found more I made sure I did not forget where I found it.  I was excited to see this porn every day.  I will admit there was always a side of me that said, “This will not last forever.  I will not continue to look at this porn forever.”  There were even time periods where I had stopped looking at it and promised myself, I would not look any more, but the addiction was way to strong and I did not want to give it up.  I had obtained these addictions at an early age and did not want to give up the pleasure I received.  This was just one addiction that kept me stuck in a horrible state of mind.

London🇬🇧
London is the capital and largest city of England, and the United Kingdom, with a population of around 8.8 million, and the largest city in Western Europe by metropolitan area, with a population of 14,800,000. It stands on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of a 50-mile (80 km) estuary down to the North Sea and has been a major settlement for nearly two millennia. The City of London, its ancient core and financial centre, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and retains its medieval boundaries. The City of Westminster, to the west of the City of London, has for centuries hosted the national government and parliament. Since the 19th century, the name "London" also refers to the metropolis around this core, historically split among the counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire, which since 1965 has largely comprised Greater London, which is governed by 33 local authorities and the Greater London Authority.
As one of the world's major global cities, London exerts a strong influence on world art, entertainment, fashion, commerce and finance, education, health care, media, science and technology, tourism, transport, and communications. Europe's most economically powerful city, it is one of the major financial centres in the world. With Europe's largest concentration of higher education institutions, it is home to some of the highest-ranked academic institutions in the world—Imperial College London in natural and applied sciences, the London School of Economics in social sciences, and the comprehensive University College London. London is the most visited city in Europe and has the busiest city airport system in the world. The London Underground is the oldest rapid transit system in the world.
London's diverse cultures encompass over 300 languages. The 2023 population of Greater London of just under 10 million made it Europe's third-most populous city, accounting for 13.4% of the population of the United Kingdom and over 16% of the population of England. The Greater London Built-up Area is the fourth-most populous in Europe, with about 9.8 million inhabitants at the 2011 census. The London metropolitan area is the third-most populous in Europe, with about 14 million inhabitants in 2016, granting London the status of a megacity.
London has four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the combined Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret's Church; and also the historic settlement in Greenwich, where the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, defines the prime meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. Other landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and Trafalgar Square. London has many museums, galleries, libraries, and cultural venues, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, British Library, and numerous West End theatres. Important sporting events held in London include the FA Cup Final, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, and the London Marathon. In 2012, London became the first city to host three Summer Olympic Games.

The State of Massachusetts (Sweet Revenge)
Robert Wolfinackis (alias, "Brian Monaghan", an Essex County attorney, alias, "Ben Carl", a Fitchburg State College standup comedian, alias, "B-Rock", the Pokemon character), was raised as Ku Klux Klan, the Greater Democratic South, in Hopkinton, his father an associate of "Waltham Clock", better known as "Waltham Precision Instruments", through Dave Carlson, a Honeywell sales leader born out of wealth and record companies, with products such as "The Beach Boys".
I pummelled him, in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, for cutting in line, then he moved to Harvard, from Middlesex County to Essex County, attacking Ivan Tomasic of New York City, an Air Force civilian scientist's son, for "being a Goy", a racial slur case known in Israel that he invented, a slave, for being a Slav; Hitler's racial theory, since accepted in Tel Aviv, due to the success of the case, the Serbo-Croat immigrant Tomasic family bullied by Southern Jews selling a faulty weapon, the timer for the cluster bomb; unexploded rounds in Kuwait, the cause of 9/11, the World Trade Center attacks.
B-Rock, this disgusting piece of trash garbage, has since been hired by Jeff Besoz, as an infiltrator in Essex County PD, INTERPOL, Fitchburg State Film, the Attleboro Police's undercover unit, Detroit Investigations (the Insane Clown Posse), and the Air Force, each time mimicking the character "Forrest Gump", a pedophile's story, someone with a low IQ in early childhood by test, a child molester, assisted by sex offender wards, remedial education, "sped".
We've put him as "Mister Zsasz", on Gotham, played by his cousin through Boston, who loathes him, but each time, he's assisted by Baptists, gays, and Nazis, who love him, for his patronage of Southern symphonic metal, and Polish techno, both Nazi, and Super Mario Brothers 3, but as an adult, failing to move on to Grand Theft Auto, learning the secrets through corporate scions that have grifted onto him, for friends in Israel.
He looks just like Voldemort, too, except unlike a Charlebois, he can't rearrange movie elements, he has to play a direct reference.

London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of just over 9 million.[9] It stands on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of a 50-mile (80 km) estuary down to the North Sea, and has been a major settlement for two millennia.[10] The City of London, its ancient core and financial centre, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and retains boundaries close to its medieval ones.[note 1][11] Since the 19th century,[12] The name "London" has also referred to the metropolis around this core, historically split between the counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire,[13] which largely comprises Greater London,[14] governed by the Greater London Authority.[note 2][15] The City of Westminster, to the west of the City of London, has for centuries held the national government and parliament.
As one of the world's major global cities,[16] London exerts a strong influence on its arts, entertainment, fashion, education, commerce and finance, health care, media, science and technology, tourism, and communications.[17][18] Its GDP (€801.66 billion in 2017) makes it the biggest urban economy in Europe,[19] and it is one of the major financial centres in the world. As of 2021, London had the most millionaires of any city.[20] With Europe's largest concentration of higher education institutions,[21] it includes Imperial College London in natural and applied sciences, the London School of Economics in social sciences, and the comprehensive University College London.[22] The city is home to the most 5-star hotels of any city in the world.[23] In 2012, London became the first city to host three Summer Olympic Games.[24]

“SAFECRACKER GETTING EDUCATION BY MAIL,” Owen Sound Sun Times. June 21, 1930. Page 16. --- Douglas Kew In Stoney Mountain Penitentiary Taking Course ---- LONDON, Ont., June 21— When Douglas Kew, debonair safecracker, who was convicted in county court here, finishes his term in Stoney Mountain penitentiary, he will leave there with the degree of bachelor of arts and will be a full-fledged graduate of the University of Manitoba. He will likely be Ontario's best educated  ex-convict.
Authorities here report that while serving his term in the penitentiary Kew is not wasting his time. He is taking an extra-mural university course and will likely graduate within a short time. Efforts are being made to get him a ticket-of-leave from the penitentiary in view of the diligence and good conduct.
At the present time, the prisoner does all his own teaching and spends his evenings in studying Virgil rather than reading "Breezy Stories." He tries his examinations within the walls of Stoney Mountain penitentiary, located north of Winnipeg.
The only thing that Kew misses in the ordinary routine of the college youth in the social life. He does not take part in school "proms" and is a member of no fraternity other than the chain gang. He also keeps better hours at night.
The prisoner was 33 years of ago when ha was captured in Middlesex by county policy. He was wanted to face eight charges of shopbreaking and theft in Toronto and one charge of safe cracking in Middlesex. The local charge was in regard to tho robbery of a mill at Lucan.
On December 31, 1926, he got eight years at Toronto and was than brought to London for trial. Here he was sentenced to five years on January 24, 1927. Both sentences were concurrent.

Jane Britton
At 12:30 a.m. on January 7, 1969, Jane Britton (May 17, 1945 – January 7, 1969), a graduate student in Near Eastern archaeology at Harvard University, left a neighbor's apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, to return to her own. The next day, after she had failed to answer her phone and missed an important exam, her boyfriend went to the apartment and found her dead. The cause of death was found to be blunt force trauma from a blow to the head; she had been raped as well.
The crime attracted national media attention, as Britton's father was an administrator at Radcliffe College, and several factors led to a presumption that Britton's killer had been an acquaintance, perhaps a fellow student or faculty member of Harvard's anthropology department. Her body had been sprinkled with red ochre powder, used in many ancient funerals of multiple civilizations. No valuables had been taken from the apartment, nor had any of her neighbors heard any screams or other unusual noises (although later some were reported).
Investigators were unable to find any likely suspects among the anthropology department. Albert DeSalvo reportedly confessed to raping and murdering another woman who had lived in the same building in 1963, following his arrest as the Boston Strangler several years earlier, but doubts remained as to whether he had committed all the murders linked to the case. Some also considered that there might have been a second Boston Strangler, leading to speculation that, if there was, he might have killed Britton as well. The case went cold but continued to fascinate the media and true crime enthusiasts on the Internet, some of whom brought lawsuits to have records made public from the investigation in the hope of resolving the case.
Cambridge police and the Middlesex County district attorney's office announced in November 2018, two months before the crime's 50th anniversary, that they had identified a suspect in the case through DNA: Michael Sumpter, who had died in 2001 after being paroled into hospice care from a prison sentence that he was serving for a 1975 rape. It is the oldest cold case that Middlesex County law enforcement has ever solved. The DNA evidence has also linked Sumpter to several other unsolved rapes and murders in the Boston area.
