For the top five ask game - Top Five... of your own fics, please

Nor All That Glisters (Drarry, E, 111k) because it's the first thing I've ever written, and I loved writing it, and everything fandom came from this fic. It's still the fic I think I'm most associated with, and as well as the original amazing art by @fantalfart and @deancebra-art, it now contains art and calligraphy by @bluebutter-art and @squintclover, and the bound copy from @emmalovesdilemmas is the first thing I wrote that I've got to hold in my hands! Plus, I still think it's the coolest concept of all my fics!

Lonely and frustrated on house arrest, with no prospects for the future, Draco begins brewing Felix Felicis in an attempt to improve his lot. Just in the short term, of course. He isn’t a total idiot.

But before long he finds himself with a thriving business, a nice flat, some actual (albeit irritatingly Gryffindor) friends, and a very satisfying sex life. What’s more, no-one is hexing him in the street. And Harry Potter is single, and gorgeous, and giving Draco decidedly interested looks.

Stop taking the Felix? You must be joking…

Dreaming Skies (Dron, E, 21k, co-written with Tacky) because it's the only fic of mine I've reread properly, and more than once, and I love it more - especially Ron - every time. Writing it (in 13 days!) with one of my all-time favourite authors, and writing it for @sitp-recs, was a dream.

Draco's life is going nowhere, so when Charlie Weasley offers him a job out on his reserve, Draco doesn't think twice before booking a Portkey. After all, it's not as if he has many other options. But when he arrives in Romania, he realises that nothing is quite what he expected...

(a story about dragons and baking, friendship and little kindnesses, putting down new roots and falling in love)

Silhouettes (Dronarry, E, 17k) because I was so proud of how this one came together. I love the triple POV, the challenge of it, and I love how it skirts the line of some tough difficult topics but stays pretty light. Also, it has one of my two favourite smut scenes I've ever written (other is in Waking Up Slow).

Draco's trying to fix the Burrow, Ron's trying to grieve, and Harry... well, just what is Harry actually doing, anyway?

A tale of grief, gardening, and ghouls, bad memories, bad puns, and bad flirting, and nudity both accidental and very, very deliberate.

Crash (Into Me) (Drarry, T, 14k) because writing this was hilarious (poor @graymatters trying to American-pick it), this was my first time properly writing Ron, and although it's one of the silliest things I've ever written, I think it's a really good concept (Drarry falling for each other during a 24-hour Quidditch match!)

Harry’s done plenty of ridiculous things for charity over the years, but Robards’ latest scheme really takes the biscuit. Or rather, the teacake.

Good job Malfoy’s there to suffer alongside him this time, eh?

Thameslink, the 07:29 from Luton (Drarry, G, 1k) because I think this is a very neat and fast paced little micro which came out well. I also remember chatting to you (Tacky) as I was writing this very quickly and last minute for @ihopeyoubothstaysafefromharm's birthday, and - it was just one of those fics that wanted to exist, iykwim.

He gets on at Harpenden, you think, although it might have been earlier.

Show and Tell

Word Count: 1326

Pairing: Matt Murdock x Reader

Summary: You show matt your new tattoo and there are some unexpected side effects.

Warnings: literally nothing I just craved fluff lmao

Author’s Note: This is probably one of the more self indulgent fics i’ve ever written because the idea of getting tattoos for people is something I actually do? I currently have four that are just straight up tattoos of handwriting and doodles from people I love with plans to get 3 more in that style.

It had never been a secret in your relationship with Matt that you loved tattoos. You'd been dotted with designs longer than you'd known the lawyer and you had never shied away from the conversation that came about from each one. One of the first things that you had done when you started dating was guide his fingers around the shapes of different tattoos and explain the stories that they represented, or told him what the handwriting was referencing. Recently, you had wondered if he knew your scrapbook better than you with the way that he so mindlessly traced shapes as you lay together.

All of which was why his slightly gob smacked expression was nothing short of endearing.

"You got a tattoo for me?" His voice is quiet in the apartment, disbelieving as if Matt expected you to break into laughter at any moment. There's a small part of you that feels bad for keeping it as a surprise but you knew that if you told the people in your life you were getting tattoos before you did they often tried to pitch in their opinions. You still shudder thinking of the argument you had gotten into with your best friend about wanting her actual handwriting and not some calligraphy font when she started trying to perfect the loops of her perpetually crooked cursive J. You hadn't wanted to fight with him, or to listen to Matt tell you that it was a bad idea. You had just wanted to memorialize this chapter of your life with him.

"Yeah, of course I did. I love you," You never tired of saying it, you weren't sure you ever could when you could see the way that his face changed. Matt wasn't the most chatty of partners, often reserved until given a reason not to be but you didn't mind. Not when you could read the micro expressions of his face like an open book. There was something about the way that he would breathe in, deep and slow, like he was smelling for rain, and his tilted grin would make his features look so much softer. He looked like all the horrible things you knew knocked at the door of his mind had been turned away for a moment, or maybe that was just you projecting how he made you feel when he said it back.

"What did you get?" Matt asked and you watched the way his fingers twitched in his lap. You didn't laugh, afraid to discourage his interest when all you really wanted was to memorize the way he leaned in towards you but didn't touch. Not when you hadn't invited him to.

"Oh, you know, something tasteful." You teased. "A nice watercolor of your ass surrounded by quotes off of practice bar exams."

"(Y/n)," Matt laughed, shattering any attempt at sounding annoyed with you.

"Here, give me your hand," He does and you pause just long enough to give it a gentle of squeeze before guiding it to your forearm. Yur heart beats fast in your chest, a thousand hummingbirds desperate to get out as you think about his reaction. You don't regret the design. Your ink is for you, but you can't deny how vulnerable you feel in these moments just before you explain them.

"Is it a flower?" You can't stop grinning as he speaks, low and contemplative as you finish guiding him over the first flower and move to the next. It had taken ages for your artist to get the right shade of red to stick to the delicate petals and you were in no hurry to move him along the finished piece.

"It's several technically, but they're all the same flower. I got three of them because it's been three years," Part of you wants to leave it at the flowers and keep the quote beneath it to yourself. You won't, you can't trust that Foggy or Karen won't ask about it and then you'll have to explain that you were worried it was too sentimental even for you, but watching him try to decode what flower it is made it hard.

"Well it's not a sunflower," You do laugh this time, but you don't feel bad because you're not the only one.

"It's a red spider lily," The words are slow and your mouth feels dry as you try to organize your thoughts. "It's also known as the Devils crown on occasion and also simultaneously a flower of the heavens. I thought it was fitting for you."

There's a careful stillness for just a moment in his form, fingers frozen on your arm as you push forwards with your explanation.

'It's not the only reason I got it though, just a fun little coincidence. I mostly got it because it's used to mark a time to celebration in some cultures, some Buddhist records even claim that they fall from the sky like snow." You're sure that he's following you now, even as he's silent. Matt was good about letting you ramble when you were nervous to calm yourself down. You can't bring yourself to look anywhere but him when you speak, too afraid to miss something in his expression and equally as afraid of not being heard in all your sentimental glory.

"I would have thought you would go for mistletoe," he says after a minute, voice not quite hesitant but something just to the left of it. You can still picture him now, barely bundled up against the cold weather, snow falling to land in his hair and melting on his hands. You must have sounded like a wreck, caught on a bad night, but he just sat there with you and listened while you watched them light the Rockefeller tree.

"I like the complicated ones, what can I say?" The smile returns and he does that deep breath again. You can't read his mind but sometimes you wish you could just to make sure he picked up on everything you weren't saying. That you liked him not in spite of his multitudes but because of them, that you weren't going anywhere just because things got hard or dangerous, that for all his self hatred and anger you can only look at him and see someone bursting at the seam with virtues. your boyfriend says nothing though, lost in his own thoughts as you continue with your presentation.

"This part isn't going to be nearly as interesting for you, sorry, but I still want you to know it's here." Matt's brow furrows, lips opened ever so slightly as you guide him back and forth across the same patch of skin. "When we first met you gave me your business card. It's not really your handwriting but I didn't know how to get that from you without raising suspicions so I just had them tattoo the braille instead. It's probably better that way though, more you."

"You put my name underneath a flower called 'Devil's Crown'?"

"No, I put 'if you need help' underneath a flower of the heavens. You may not think much of yourself Matt, but I do. I always have." The color comes back slowly and then all at once, from sheet white to a beautiful shade of pink. You bring the hand not guiding him along the words to interlock your fingers with his.

The brunette in front of you has been so quiet for so long that the anxiety has started to creep back in. The only thing that kept you from beginning to loose yourself within it is that his fingers are still tracing the flowers and words on your arm, your hand warm in his.

"What are you thinking?" You ask finally, despite the fear of what he might say. Matt opens his mouth instantly, for once not thinking about the words coming out of his mouth.

"I think when this is is over I want to get married."

I'm so sorry, I have no idea what a mun-name is but thank you anyways 😅. Also sorry it's taken so long, I was trying to do the Make a Wish prompts, which I've finally gotten mostly bullet pointed out. Lucky thing because I all but finished one of the last two and then lost it due to my own stupidity... so I've been sadly trying to rewrite it /sigh. I decided to finally shake free those ideas in the mean time, since I haven't posted any writing in a while

Yamato (Tenzo, but this name is for private use)

Because he was raised in Root, he mostly emotes via micro expressions so his Alpha has learned to be really good at reading those looks. His Alpha can literally stare at his face for hours while they talk. Yamato stares right back. Please ask for a booth if you go to a restaurant with him. Everyone thinks you're making bedroom eyes at each other when you're figuring out your next week's meal prep. Actual bedroom eyes are near lethal levels.

He's a pretty tall guy so when you first started spending time at his place, all the cups and plates and things are also really high up. He barely used any of his lower cupboards. When you first move in together, he asks you where all of your stuff is and you think he's joking until you realize he genuinely doesn't check any of those cabinets or drawers that he doesn't use...

All of his furniture is handmade, as in through the wood style. It's all very functional, lots of squares, but elegant. If want different shapes he's really willing and eager to learn how intricate he can get with his jutsu. He's got a remarkably artistic streak, despite his serious demeanor. You'll never have to buy a new bookshelf again, he'll just make them.

Yamato likes quality time and gifts as his receiving love languages. He works really hard for the village and having someone focused on him and appreciative of his hard work and attentive to his needs is key to being a good partner for him

You can't go wrong if you show your appreciation by making him things that he likes, ie a craft, homemade item, or really involved food. He's also not opposed to an evening of pampering where he has your full undivided attention after a day spent sight seeing.

Gaara

He doesn't make the first move in a relationship, which leaves him in a fun lil' stalemate for a while with his eventual mate, because you can't make moves on the Kazekage and he's thinking "I'm the Kazekage, it would be an unfair power dynamic to tell them I think about them every time I write poetry lately..." On a trip back to Suna, Temari takes one look at him and you and then scolds Kankuro because "I can't be the one to manage both kinds of diplomatic relations. Please do something to make my life a little easier." Kankuro then attempts to organize scenarios for you and Gaara to meet. These go poorly in the way of all comedic anime interludes but do result in the two of you bonding more closely.

Gaara was raised to be the leader of a military nation, but he winds down by engaging in more traditional artistic pursuits. All three of the siblings actually have a talent in at least one area of the more refined arts. Gaara is very accomplished at calligraphy, and I'm not kidding about the poetry, he really does compose different works and a lot of them are very good. He even worked hard at some point during his courtship to create a public stone garden in the village which he sometimes alters during festivals so it has different designs.

He is very responsible when it comes to Kazekage duties. He's also been performing them since before he turned 15, and has almost no penchant for mischief. However, he can be easily coaxed away from his office in the name of training his children/students, where he can be further tricked into simply enjoying himself. He's actually a really patient, insightful teacher.

He has an unfortunate habit, only slightly curbed by age, of being willing to drag everyone into a goal he decides is worthwhile. While he mostly used credible threats to get what he wanted as a child, he's since become very adept at manipulation. Mostly, he's genuine and persistent, but he also knows how to get other people to want to follow him. This includes knowing the exact Look to give his mate whenever he wants something.

I think you could easily write him as demiromantic/aromantic. He isn't romantically attracted to anyone right away, and if he does develop those feelings they aren't all-consuming, but there are certain people he can see himself partnering with for the rest of his life, and certain triggers for kicking those feelings off with his alpha.

Nagato

The more I research him, the more it is clear his canon outcome is the bad-end version of the shonen trio trope. Yahiko and Konan were in love with one another, and Nagato was the one who loved them both enough to follow them to the ends of the earth. Nothing in any world was ever going to deter him from that, so his Alpha needs to be pointed in the same direction, ideally devoted to Yahiko and his original Akatsuki as well.

Nagato is the one who guides his Alpha in believing in the ideals of Akatsuki. Before the original trio falls apart, this is done without any ultimatum or ulterior motive. Nagato genuinely believes in the dream Yahiko has, and felt very motivated to bring that hope to his Alpha. It was only afterwards that he truly started to fall in love with them, although that was the original spark.

He likes to read, although he seldom has the time or opportunity to do so. Jiraiya's taught all of the Ame orphans to read and write. He truly enjoys ready philosophical treatises and dialogues. He is a fan of fiction but very slow when reading these because he prefers to experience the world himself first hand, interacting with people and places. He once dreamed of traveling throughout Amegakure and the surrounding nations as a kind of pilgrim.

Nagato nearly died after he fought Hanzo for the first time, not because of his injuries, but because chakra depletion left him unable to sense his Alpha. Believing them dead while he was near delirious, he himself nearly died from the grief of losing Yahiko, and them on top of this loss, despite Yahiko's final wish.

In a version of the world where his Alpha does not survive Obito's slaughter of the original Akatsuki members, Nagato recovers their body and turns it into the Preta Path of Pain, appropriate given the path's callback to possessiveness and desire, and representation of the Hungry Ghost Realm. In the version where his Alpha survives, Nagato becomes very possessive over them, only willing to let them take missions for the Akatsuki alongside Konan, alone, or preferably not at all as you three nurse your grief within Amegakure.

Shisui

You know I love those Uchiha men. They just have a vibe... Shisui in particular. His appearances never make me think first of his death, but of his kindness and his protectiveness over the people he cares for; he dies smiling. Unfortunately, Shisui's path really only works in a non-massacre scenario, since he is approximately sixteen when he dies, which is too young for him to have a mating bond, although I do HC him as considering courting someone at the time the coup starts to take over his life. The with-massacre scenario is one in which Itachi is able to get Shisui out of the village, possibly that he secretly survives the fall thanks to his summons.

Shisui's parents were either not ninjas, or are individuals who have had to retire for the corp for some reason. What we know about him says he was the family breadwinner after he was made a jounin, which leads me to lean towards non-ninja parents. This is particularly interesting for Uchiha clan members, since we don't get to see what the civilian members of clan families do in the Naruto world and most assume the Uchiha clan is shinobi-dominated. It's doubly intriguing when we also know the famous Kagami Uchiha was his ancestor (likely grandfather > great grandfather if we base off other known generations). Since we don't have canon confirmation of this stuff, I guess it counts as a HC?

Given the above, he's the most likely of the Uchiha on my list to willingly and happily take on a civilian Alpha. While I haven't totally fleshed out the background for this pairing, I have toyed around with the idea of an acid-tongued relative of someone from the Daimyo's court whom Shisui met on a mission catching his attention. This oc is a bit of a tsundere with an infamous temper who only Shisui with his notable empathetic and pleasant demeanor is immune to. They become one of the Land of Fire ambassadors and Shisui travels with them on a sort of long-term assignment before they eventually settle together in the village.

The reason they settle in the village is that Shisui decides he wants to have kids and knows that the Uchiha will never risk the sharingan passing into the control of another family or political body. His alpha has to sign a bunch of paperwork relinquishing their ability to inherit anything that might give their family power over their and Shisui's children, but enjoys arguing enough that they remain an ambassador even after settling in Konoha so they can wipe the floor with anyone who has anything to say about Shisui being the reason for their departure.

In the survive-the-fall scenario, Shisui remains blind, retires from being a ninja, and lives with his Alpha in a civilian city, where they help hide his identity and spoil him as much as he will allow. There's potential in this scenario for a path which probably fixes Sasuke btw. There's a lot of options here.

Sai

He intentionally emotes more than Yamato, however while Yamato mostly keeps his facial expressions hidden, his reactions to his Alpha are almost always honest. Sai explicitly cultivates his ability to make facial expressions because he was trying to fit in with normal people, throw them off guard, and do his job as a spy better. This makes it more difficult for his Alpha to tell whether Sai is actually showing that he likes something or not. It takes a long time to figure it out. Eventually, his reactions naturally start to correspond with his emotions around family and friends so it's easier on everyone.

His Alpha thinks that Sai really doesn't like them at the beginning. Although he doesn't necessarily understand why, he picks up on this very quickly and tries to fix the situation throughout the next few months, to varying degrees of success. Eventually, he decides to show you how he feels by painting a portrait of you as he sees you. It's exactly as intimate as you'd think it would be. For better or worse, Sai eventually has to come out and say he can't come up with any courting gift more genuine than the portrait to show you how he feels about you personally, which will tip his Alpha off that he is interested in them.

Because he has difficulties showing his emotions, and also in understanding the nuances behind others' reactions, he likes straightforward methods of communication. He trusts his Alpha implicitly and is incredibly perceptive so he is able to read their responses to him. He enjoys words of affirmation the most and appreciates when his Alpha takes the time to talk through things with him. He also likes physical contact, craves it even, but can quickly become overstimulated depending on the situation. He genuinely wants people to like him and to have sincere connections with the people he meets by acting like himself. Although Sai works hard to "earn" his place among the other people in his generation, it takes him a long time to see that everyone has already accepted him, and to understand that relationships take time and hard work.

For many years, he believes he physically can't have children because Root made all of its operatives starting about 5 years before Sai joined infertile. This insights conflicting feelings in him. On the one hand he never has to worry about accidentally becoming pregnant, which is very nice when he starts navigating his physical desires with his mate. On the other hand, he will never have the option and that hurts, because so much was taken from him in the way of choice and this is another one of those things. The procedure may be reversible in some members because I can see Root forcing long-term operatives to have families with their targets to get closer to them, or being gross enough to try and breed operatives, but Sai doesn't know this.

He likes swimming. He has a favorite swimming spot on the Konoha river. It's the kind of activity that sincerely has no purpose, and he finds a serenity in it, in a similar way that lots of people find a zone of focus when running.

Can you tell us what do you use to color your drawings on traditional? I need some tips •́⁠ ⁠ ⁠‿⁠ ⁠,⁠•̀

why hello!! Sorry for such a late answer!!

so, I’m a fun little something we call ✨inconsistent✨(sigh) so while I may not be the best person to ask…but here’s things I commonly use color wise (favored art supply dump)

Alchohol ink markers

I use these most, they are a beautiful thing, my favorite are Ohuhu as they are high quality and a much lower price then brands such as Copic. (Can you taste the salt.)

They have less blend ability in comparison to Copic but are overall a much better investment if you ask me! They are great for a more smooth look! Another one I have around that I use for less saturated colors is touch youch youch

I very much prefer brush pens over the chiseled ones, for a paint like experience, and more dynamic application! Again these are just personal preference!

(I have a bad habit of opening ink capsules and painting with ink. I would not necessarily recommend this.)

Watercolor

There’s lots of pretty nice watercolor you can get for a pretty cheap price! The ones I prefer currently are MeiLiang, I got them online for a good price and they are very nice!

That said I do mix around different brands and such, whatever is on hand.

Gel pens

I love gel pens, even if you just have like one or two it’s such a difference!! I love just having white ones for adding little details and such to drawings! You can also get colors if you like! I use the Jellyrollers!

Colored pencils

a lot of people hate colored pencils which I get, but I find them very helpful for detailing (when I have motivation to do so lol) I often use them on top of drawings I’ve layed down a base of alcohol ink with! That way it has a clean base and can add the fun texture and stuff afterwards!! Those smooth looks can be achieved with pencils alone, I often just don’t have time for that :) it’s very fun though, layering is key with pencils

I do very much enjoy prismicolor colored pencils!!! It’s an investment I don’t regret lol, although I’m sure any soft core colored pencils would have the same effect!!

Posca

occasionally I use posca markers for large poster sized drawings, esp for the ink capsules. I like the paint coverage!! That said they can be a pain to work with.

it’s probably not good to be like me and use all of this on sketch paper. (I know. I’m aware that that is psychotic.) but I do normally use sketch paper, getting some multi medium paper might be good if you are interested in paints inks and pencils though, that way you can use it for all of the above :))

Color wise that’s what I commonly mix and match with, when it comes to pens my FAVORITE pens to sketch or do lineart with are Tombow calligraphy pens. Simple brush pens, it makes detailing harder but I enjoy the dynamics. There’s lots of micro pens you can find for small details as well!! I also prefer to use mechanical pencils for sketching, simply because the mechanical lead stays thin and sharp instead of getting dull. That said, I use very cheap mechanical pencils, and sometimes you need a full pencil depending on the project.

There’s a little mini rant on the art supplies I use color wise, again these are just my preferences from what I’ve tried!! I’m by no means a professional haha, i very much experiment and make a mess of things!

Traditional art can become…quite the investment. Especially when it comes to buying all of the art supplies as your resources dwindle. I have to buy new art supplies much more often than I’d like to admit.

All that said, I am a firm believer of art being able to be formed from any medium!! >:D

be it a simple 2b pencil, a ballpoint pen, or crayons products, I think anything can be used to make something really pretty :))

Only real advice I have is don’t be scared to mix and match, get messy, and experiment!! Do whatever’s most fun, and don’t think you can’t make something great from something simple!! There’s no real rules. Only techniques and suggestions. It can be daunting because there’s no undo button in traditional art, but I think that’s a really good way to expand your abilities :0 it teaches you to roll with mess ups and learn how to work with them!!

Most importantly, let yourself learn from others, but NEVER let people force how you use your supplies, don’t be scared to beat them up if that’s what you need (the art supplies not the people.), and don’t think you need the fanciest things to make nice things >:D

Roland walks down Main Street with an envelope full of cash in his hand. His mom gave him a fat stack of cash to spend on getting a tattoo, checking the envelope it almost seems like she gave him way too much. When Roland thinks back to his old Tattoo he remembers it looking like crap. It was a generic shark which Roland always used to claim was a Tiger Shark, despite being done in a tattoo parlor the design was scribbly and blotchy, it looked more akin to something done in someone's garage with pen ink than professionally. Roland can only hope that his next tattoo won’t look like complete garbage.

He opens the door to the parlour, and the bell above the door rings as he enters. Looking around, the walls are covered in black paint and the floor is filled with a white and light gray checkerboard, it gives it a feel of modernity yet still being a little retro.

Roland shuffles to the side and sits down in the waiting area, he listens to the buzzing of the needle guns while fiddling with the stuffed envelope. Roland hears shoe-tapping coming towards him, he looks up to one of the employees coming to greet him, she pauses once getting a better glimpse at him, she smirks and then goes back onto the employees-only area. Roland holds himself a little, not sure what to feel about that micro-interaction.

Another employee comes out to greet Roland, whistling a little. “Wow, she wasn’t wrong.”

“What? You never seen someone like me?” Roland snaps, feeling embarrassed and offended.

“Oh no, sorry, that’s not- sorry-” The employee tries to apologize.

“Then what was that comment for?”

“She uhh, she thought you were hot.” The employee sighs.

Roland blushes and covers his face, he wants to dig a hole and crawl into it he’s so embarrassed. In the weird way his brain has been warped, he’s become like those girls whom he used to hit on, creeped out and sex-repulsed, it’s made listening to his favourite songs unbearable.

“Hey, don’t be ashamed of being pretty, I’m sure you’ve got someone special who tells you that all the time.”

“I’m not ashamed, I’m angry, I just want to be treated normally!” He snaps again, lucky that there are so few customers today.

“Then, then, I will… If you come on back I’ll get some paperwork ready for you.” He ushers Roland to one of the chairs in the back of the parlor, Roland huffs, getting up from his seat and walking to the back. He looks around him, all the stalls have privacy curtains, Roland frowns, he probably sounded like a jerk to those on the inside of those curtains.

He sits down in the customer chair as the guy comes over with paperwork. “You are eighteen right?”

“I’m supposed to be nineteen.” He replies.

“Umm, right, do you have proof?”

Roland pulls out the specialty health card given to him when he was recalled. His reason for stating that he’s supposed to be nineteen is because when someone gets unwound their body won't age while in the body lockers, therefore Roland is seventeen and nineteen at the same time.

“Ok, well, I’m gonna go with what you’ve told me since you don’t seem to have a parent or guardian around.”

He sets down the paper beside Roland pointing to all the terms and conditions of the tattooing. He flips to the back of the paper pack and points to a line at the bottom. “Alright, and you just sign here.”

Roland grabs the pen and signs, careful not to accidentally sign Roland Taggart.

“Oh wow, you’ve got really good writing for a lefty.”

“The lefties you know can’t write well?”

“Well, there is my little brother, he’s only five so I don’t expect him to have the best calligraphy.” He laughs, making Roland laugh as well.

“Oh my god I just remembered I forgot to tell you my name, it’s Lee, my name is Lee.”

“Nice to meet you, Lee.”

“Nice to meet you too, Roland.”

Lee pulls out a sketchbook and pencil from a bin attached to the wall. “So what are we thinking about doing?”

“Well, I used to have a tattoo of a shark on my right arm before I was unwound.”

“Ooohhh what was I like?”

“Shit, it was shit.”

Lee laughs, “Did you get done in someone's garage?”

“Looked like it, but no, I got it done professionally.”

“Well, I can assure you that I’ve been an apprentice for a long time before being licensed, and I’ve got one of the steadiest hands here.” He gives Roland a little thumbs up, and he then flips open the sketchbook. “So do you want a shark again?”

Roland takes a moment to think, in a way he’s making himself look more like the older version of himself, but he loves sharks so who cares?

“I guess so, I want it to look, interesting. My first one was really generic.” He pauses, “And please don’t try to make one of those smiling sharks with shades, it's funny to look at but I’d never want something like that on my skin.”

“Alright, so creative, but not too creative, got it.”

Lee looks up pictures of sharks and sketches a few out. Roland watches the pencil move across the page, he’s never seen someone draw so well.

“Oh! I’ve got an idea! Have you ever seen those Polynesian animal tattoos? I've seen a shark tattoo done in that style before, and it looked so good.” Lee exclaims.

“I’ve only ever seen those rings of waves.”

“Oh my gosh! We could add that to the design too! Ahem, that’s if you want to do something like that.”

“Sure, why not?”

Roland watches again as Lee flips over the page and starts sketching again. “Y'know when Recalls usually come in, they want statement tattoos, like dotted rings that mimic cutting lines with little words running across them.”

“That sounds cool.”

“Yeah, but we’re usually cringing internally when we tattoo on the words, most of them like putting profanities on their skin. I can understand why they do it, but at the same time they’re showing the public what they want to see, most people think recalling wasn’t the best idea, and here these teens are, with curse words all over their skin.”

Roland looks to the side, “Hypothetically if I were to get that done to my other arm, would you like to do the writing?”

Lee looks up and smiles. “You’d let me do that?”

“Well, I’d have to approve the words beforehand.”

“Oh yeah, of course.” Lee waves his hand, “Most of them, usually get the markings on their legs too, we could add some wave circles to your legs too to tie it all together.”

“That sounds great, but what if one side was the shark and the waves and the other side was the dotted rings.”

“Something more asymmetrical?”

“Yeah.”

Lee goes back to sketching. “How far do you want the rings to go up, I don’t mean to explain the obvious, but the leg cuts go all the way up to the upper leg.”

“Yeah, you’re not tattooing my upper leg.” Roland sneered.

“Right, right only to your knee and ankle then.”

Lee flips over the sketchbook to show off the sketch, and Roland stares at it in awe.

“So what do you think?”

“It’s beautiful!”

“Right?” Lee sets down the sketchbook, he then pulls out a measuring tape. “Now let’s get to measuring your limbs.”

He walks closer to Roland and measures out the length and width of his arms and legs.

“Do you want the lines on your arm to go all the way up to your shoulder?”

“Sure.”

Lee measures out Roland’s left arm, lifting his arm to measure the shoulder cut, he furrows his eyebrows upon seeing how much armpit hair there was. He measures his arm nonetheless, but there’s a look of concern in his eyes. Lee finishes up the measuring and totals up the price for the tattoo job.

“Alright, so since these tattoos won't be coloured and they’re not that detailed, they’ll be priced about 1400$,” Lee says.

Roland pulls out the envelope and forks over the 1400$ leaving 100$ still in the envelope, he’s surprised his mom would spend this much on him. Then again he’s sure that recalling him cost her thousands.

After counting out all the money Lee returns to his station. “Alright, so we could do this all in one day… My next open time slot is next Monday, when you come in I want you to have your legs and arms shaved, that includes your armpits, got it?”

“Yeah, sounds good.”

“Great! Here’s my phone number in case you need to reschedule, and you can be on your merry way!”

Roland comes into the tattoo parlour the next Monday, he feels a little out of it with having to shave all his limbs. He didn’t realize it the first time he came in, but the air is really cold, guess that tells him how much hair had been in between him and the elements.

“Hi Roland, are you ready?” Roland looks up to see Lee standing in front of him.

Roland nods, he heads back with Lee to his station at the back.

“Are you alright if I close the curtain?”

Roland nods again, Lee gives him a puzzled look. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just in my second week of these weekly meds, and yesterday I was getting my sense of touch back.”

“Oh like those weekly painkillers, I hear they’re the worst! Must be awful for someone like you.”

“Tell me about it, I hallucinated the surgeons all around me on my first day of taking them.”

“Oh geez, well let me know if you feel uncomfortable at any time. I hear Recalls usually panic at all the sterilization and the needle gun itself.”

Lee closes the curtain and gets out his equipment. Roland looks around a bit, Lee’s certificates are hooked to the wall, he looks down at the needle gun that Lee sanitizes, and then to the chair he sits in. It seems a little like he’ll be doing surgery on Roland, but there are little things around him that remind him it’s all in his head. Even with all the cleanliness the place seems comfortable enough, the needle is attached to what looks like a stuffed sock, and there’s some happy rock music playing in the background. There are also no surgeons observing him.

“There’s one last thing I have to ask you, do you shoot up on anything?”

“No, why?”

“It’s just the amount of body hair you had, I noticed it when I was measuring you, it’s not normal for someone your age.”

“Umm, no, I was born like that, well not born with body hair… When I hit puberty my mom took me to a pediatrician, apparently, I’ve got a testosterone influx.”

“Huh, You don’t usually hear about something like that.”

Roland frowns. “I don’t like it, it makes me moody and stupid hormonal at the worst of times.”

“Oh, like it’s a bad influx,” Lee remarked as he started to wipe down Roland's left arm.

“The doctors said it would never get worse so they never put me on anything, but it still affects me. I think I’ve gotten more timid after being recalled, so at least my personality has a balance with it rather than fighting with it all the time.”

“That’s good.”

Lee fires up the needle gun, it starts buzzing. “I’m gonna start with the cutting lines since they’ll be the easiest, okay?”

Roland nods again as he watches Lee put down the blue ink stencils he’s made before making beautiful straight-spaced lines across his wrist, elbow, and shoulder. He also starts to lay down the writing, ‘Cut here.’ on his wrist, ‘Do it, I dare you.’ on his elbow, and ‘Unwind me again.’ on his shoulder.

“See? It gets the point across without any profanities.”

Lee wraps it up before moving down to the ground focusing on Roland's left leg. “Can I take your shoes off?” He asks.

“Yeah.”

Lee rolls down Roland’s socks and starts laying down the stencils again. “So, any special people in your life?”

Roland scoffs. “If you’re talking about partners, then no, I don’t really want one anyway.”

“Bad dating experiences? Or are you just aroace?”

Roland shakes his head. “I’m the one who gave bad experiences.”

“Oh.”

“That was before I was unwound, I don’t want to do that anymore. I think it’s for the best if I just pull out of the dating pool entirely.”

“Oh don’t beat yourself up over that, you know, I’ve heard most Recalls pull 180s in their personality so maybe you’ll give some a really good time.” He winks at him. “I bet a really pretty girl or a twink would eat you right up.”

“I’m sorry, a what, a twink?”

“Yeah, a scrawny yin guy.”

“You think I’m the type that likes men and women?”

“Roland, you’re wearing a pink sleeveless hoodie, what am I supposed to think?”

Roland scowls, pointing a finger at him “I don’t like that you’re making a fair point.” he pauses, “And I’m not even gonna say it’s salmon, ‘cause it really is pink.” he mutters.

“So you don’t like men then?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never thought about it, I’ve never had the time to think about it.”

“Well, a little food for thought, if you're not completely opposed to it, you might just like it a little.”

Lee finishes off Roland’s left leg, moving onto the right.

“I’m yin myself and I didn’t know it for the longest time, just last year at nineteen I got a boyfriend. It’s hard in America, even with unwinding being done and over with they still haven’t changed their stance on gay marriage, you still have to get wwed and mmarried.”

“I’m not too knowledgeable on it, but can’t you get properly married in Canada?”

“Yeah, that’s what me and my boyfriend were thinking if we stay together long enough, book a flight to Canada and get married there.”

Lee grabs the wrap again. “Do you wanna see what it looks like before I wrap it all up?”

Roland tilts his head down and bends over to look at his right leg; it looks like Lee added in another cutting line across his other knee. “It looks amazing!” Roland exclaimed.

“Glad to hear it!”

For the rest of the session, Roland watches as Lee inks the shark into his arm. He realizes that for the longest time, he hasn’t minded the feel of the needle gun. It feels like a sunburn. Roland hasn’t gotten any sunburns yet in his new body, but he’s got countless memories of having them, it’s like he’s never minded them at all.

At the end of the session, Roland is over the moon about his new tattoos. Lee hands him a pamphlet on how to take care of them. He leaves the tattoo parlour with a sense of joy because this time he knows his tattoos won’t look like garbage.

i really love that fude companies from japan have historical lore - most of them are descended from calligraphy makers who pivoted into cosmetic brushes as a means to staying in business, and some companies still make calligraphy brushes to keep the art alive! most companies will offer vegan versions ad well, made with the same handcrafted skills. so if you need a micro hyperfixation coping mechanism, here's one. 😌

Journey to the current address

When I was young I lived in Yangjae-Dong. I moved to Gunpo when I was 7 years old and lived there until the 2nd grade of elementary school. Then I lived in California for a year and a half. I also lived in Shenyang, China for another year and a half. I came back to Korea when I was 13, and stayed in Gunpo ever since. I attended Anyang Foreign Language High School in Anyang, and I majored in Chinese then.

Reason(s) to choose Yonsei University

I simply wanted to major in CDM. I was always interested in design and business fields, and Yonsei University was the only school with a major providing design and business courses at the same time.

Simple CV

I don’t have an experience in internships. I have been the vice president of the 7th CDM Student Council NUWAVE and the promotional team member in the dance crew Churrus, but the work I have done there is not related to design that much. Recently I won the grand prize at the Yonsei Micro-Learning Video Contest together with my CDM teammates. This semester, I work as a RA of Lee Wonchul House and a marketing team member of the Yonsei University workstation, proBee.

I am still not sure about my vocational goal. I am interested in design and marketing, but my area of interest is very broad and vague right now. I enjoy showcasing my works in any form; either performance or artwork or etc. I’m still continuing to narrow down my interests and bearable areas.

Things that I like

My hobby is writing calligraphy. I like reading poems, and I write down my favorite phrase in calligraphy from time to time (just so that I can remember them). My MBTI is ESFJ, and I’m a very extroverted kind of person. I like going to cafes with my friends, and sometimes I even go out to meet my friends 6 days in a row. I also enjoy dancing as I’m currently in a Yonsei K-POP dance club, Churrus. Although I’m not a good dancer, dancing is one of my ways to release stress. My all-time favorite food is matcha latte and the food that I’m recently into is stevia cherry tomato. I’m introducing this crazy food to everyone these days…I can share a coupang link if you want.

Courses I have taken

This is my first-semester taking IID courses, so I’ve only taken CDM courses. I finished all my CDM MRs (except Capstone Project) and have taken Design Business, Integrated Brand Management and VMD, Design Research, Art and Social Enterprise, Design Trend, and Design 1 for my CDM MEs. I am taking Typography Design, Strategic Marketing, Intro to Digital Tools, and Intro to IID this semester, along with this course, Interaction Design.

Expectations for this "Interaction Design" class.

I have decided to double major in IID because I’m still very unsure about my future job field. I hope I can get to know about UI&UX more through this course and get an insight maybe.
