also for more madmenposting i feel like something ppl miss with michael ginsberg’s character is that the fact he’s jewish cannot be separated from his character arc.
i’ve read a couple of like “character profile, psychologist analyses michael ginsberg” type articles and like. some of them really do not take his backstory into account at all. one even suggests that he wasn’t actually born in a concentration camp because “he just says he was told that but when he says he’s a martian that’s him saying that’s not his actual backstory” no!!!!! him saying he’s a martian is him desperately trying to disconnect himself from an extremely traumatic start to his life!!!!!! do y’all understand what kind of damage being born in a death camp could do to a child????? it doesn’t say how long he spent there or if he has any memories of it, but even if he did it’s likely his brain would have tried to block them out, hence his story about being a martian. he says he feels different from other people so he must be an alien. of course he feels different! it’s extremely unlikely that anyone he interacts with in new york other than other jews would have any idea what his experience was like or how profoundly it affected him!
which is why i feel like this is one of the actual good examples of the Neurotic Jew stereotype. most of the time when we see this stereotype it’s just mocking jews who are like that, but with michael’s character we see why he’s like that. he’s neurotic because he was born directly into the epicenter of a genocide against his people, because he is deeply aware of how the world feels about him as a jew. he’s likely experienced antisemitism in america as well, given how we see people at sterling cooper talk about jews throughout the show. and though the show doesn’t explicitly mention it, his psychotic break could have been caused by the onset of schizophrenia, which is more common among ashkenazi jews. michael’s story arc, in my mind, shows us just how broken and exhausted so many jews during that time were. some chose assimilation as much as they could, like rachel menken, but some like michael couldn’t escape the trauma of antisemitism (not that any of them really could). so yeah, i hope folks who watch mad men see his story arc as more than just “dude who’s kinda crazy goes actual crazy.”

It's an active Mad Men-related blog! Sweet mercy, I beg you: Where do I find the Michael Ginsberg/Bob Benson fics. They must exist, there must have been a tumblr drabble or an archived deleted webpage that I have missed. I will read anything. If you happen to know of any fanfic focussing on these two, thank you!! :)
I wish I had a secret goldmine for you, this pairing is SO much fun and they have so much thematic potential as two very different types of late-60s dude! But I can't think of anything I've encountered off of AO3, try as I might -- does anyone know of any Ginsberg/Bob content to hook us up with? I can't believe there's truly nothing out there but I may have to write something just to make sure

“What am I? Cassandra?” says the prophet Ginsburg, cursed with foreseeing the future but not being able to make others believe it. Cassandra predicted the fall of Troy and saw the Trojan Horse for what it was: a lifeless shell providing cover for a vengeful army of men. She told the truth again and again to deaf ears, until finally she went mad. Ginsburg feels like he’s got a bomb inside him, the pressure is so intense. He can’t get the sound of the computer hum out of his ears. In 1933, the German government decided to do a nationwide census, to help identify the different ethnic groups living in the country. Using punch cards made by IBM, they were able to determine there were two million Jews instead of the previously thought four to six hundred thousand. Later, the concentration camps used IBM punch cards to keep tabs on the inmates. “That machine came for us,” he tells Peggy. “And one by one…”
Ginsburg stuffs tissue paper in his ears to drown out the hum. Odysseus had his men plug their ears with beeswax while he kept his unblocked. He wanted to know what the sirens sang. The sirens made predictions about the future. “‘Come here,” they sang, “and listen to our two voices. No one ever sailed past us without staying to hear the enchanting sweetness of our song— and he who listens will go on his way not only charmed, but wiser, for we know all the ills that the gods laid upon the Argives and Trojans before Troy, and can tell you everything that is going to happen over the whole world.” But he did a bit of prophesizing too. He knew that once the sirens started singing he’d be too weak to resist and so he made arrangements to protect his present self from his future one. He had his men lash him to his ship’s mast, therefore making failure impossible.
I am so obsessed with this connection that I have also connected it to one of my favourite songs, There There by Radiohead, which now that I think about it is very Ginsberg-coded:
There's always a siren Singing you to shipwreck (Don't reach out, don't reach out) (Don't reach out, don't reach out) Steer away from these rocks We'd be a walking disaster (Don't reach out, don't reach out) (Don't reach out, don't reach out)
Just 'cause you feel it Doesn't mean it's there (Someone on your shoulder) (Someone on your shoulder) Just 'cause you feel it Doesn't mean it's there (Someone on your shoulder) (Someone on your shoulder)
There, there
Why so green And lonely, and lonely And lonely Heaven sent you To me, to me To me
We are accidents Waiting, waiting To happen We are accidents Waiting, waiting To happen
Not only do the lyrics suit him perfectly (down to the backing vocals being auditory hallucinations) but also that general sense of untetheredness, being alone at sea and carried away by the waves, is so Ginsberg. If I had any talent in making video edits, I would definitely use this song.
