Okay so I'm slowly going through the massive backlog of Dimension 20 because it is PRECISELY my speed for actual plays and the first old season I watched was Mice and Murder because my husband and I are huge murder mystery fans and. You guys. This season is so good.

I know I'm preaching to the choir because the m&m Tumblr tag consists entirely of "Mice and Murder is underrated" and "this is a post about D20 in which I have tagged the name of every season," so I will leave most of the gushing to one side and just give my biggest takeaway.

Mice and Murder is a masterclass of how to start playing D&D and how to support people who are just starting playing D&D. From Brennan's patient leading of players to conclusions without being pushy or condescending, to Ally's welcoming energy as the one experienced player, to all the newbies learning their rhythm and just diving in...it gives some really good models of what an early D&D experience can be like and I just respect it so much for that.

(If you are intrigued by my thesis and haven't watched that season's Adventuring Party, absolutely go do that, cause they really get down into it and I love it.)

I think mice and murder may be one of, or THE best d20 season.

Brennan overwhelms you. He gives you upwards of thirty characters, fun accents, countless leads, and a crew with so much distrust and history between them that it's almost impossible, at first, to deduce anything.

But the players find information, and threads begin to connect. I solve the electromagnetic pulse puzzle minutes before Grant does, and I am still on the edge of my seat and bouncing like a baby at the excitement of the reveal. Pieces are connected as leads fall away, the seemingly unimportant detail of Barkus Aerlius culminating in a discovery that Rekha prompts, without even Brennan's help. Characters are divided into groups without even cognizance- suspect and irrelevant, clean and dirty.

Then, as the pools fluctuate, the players diverge into following their own leads, Gangie, Lars, and Buckster following into the elevator and correctly deducing where the key goes to. They single out their suspects- looking at their guesses as Daisy reveals the information about Sylvester's old rival, and following up and saving the information for an opportune time. Sam inviting Jeremey into a casual conversation and using insanely executed real-world wordplay to exctract information from the character is the final straw for me- that is one of the best pieces of d&d roleplay i have ever seen.

Later on, with the mystery being solved of the "ghosts" on the dock as Daisy is in the bathroom... i'm completely shocked! What an excellent twist that has been building up for episodes!!! I'm absolutely aghast and it is a twist i did NOT see coming that Connor is possibly still alive as well as the archenemy (i can't remember his name and i don't want to look anything up until i finish the season) has possibly been in the house the entire time (despite the Reich Reference in the title)

This show is incredible.

case closed: the party converges on oblongata station once more. they're facing down the don and madam loathing, who can turn them against each other. imelda and dan flash the gangsters to wildly differing results. ivana rolls a 59 on hunch and he still comes back. elias punches his boss. dan goes down. the fix eats the key. conrad rolls a 57 [the number of heinz varieties] to bring down madam loathing. elias steals a birthday cake and runs out into the street, gets a date and reconciles his childhood trauma as he goes into witness protection.

evolution & revolution: warning the populace. pitching scam calls. driving the truck. phoebe is jaegering dr. wenabocker in a very gross maxi. the ground collapses. revenants are charmed. viola is very efficient. thorn calls lightning. tula attacks her son for 67 damage. ava attacks the groun for 109 damage and a long rest. jaysohn gets phoebe. lila fireballs. viola crits twice and kills one guy with paladin/fighter shenanigans and then kills the rest by kicking the trigger of a gun and hitting a gas tank. tula heals jaysohn, lukas, and herself a little bit. battle is over in 1.33 rounds.

i started watching the ravening war and i'm kind of losing it at brennan creating a character with All of his skill points in lying, and then TWO other players rolling NAT 20S at the SAME TIME to Force him to tell the truth, and him managing to finesse his way out of doing so anyway. feels like a Fantastic omen for the kind of character interactions i'm about to watch. god bless.
