Princess Anne’s Country Life guest edit: The inside story of putting together a magazine with The Princess Royal

Country Life | Published 29 July 2020

Paula was the Co-ordinating Editor of the special issue, which was guest-edited by The Princess to mark her forthcoming 70th birthday — a 172-page edition of the magazine highlighting The Princess’s deep love for and thorough understanding of the countryside and those who live and work in it.

‘Working with a small team from The Princess’s office at Buckingham Palace, we overcame the challenges of working from home across the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic to pull together an eclectic edition that truly reflects the issues and the country people that The Princess holds dear,’ says Paula, who compiled the magazine from her kitchen table in Dorset.

‘Working to a list of features supplied by The Princess in February, we quickly marshalled our best writers and photographers to write about and photograph all the subjects requested, while adhering to social distancing rules,’ Paula continues.

‘This involved commissioning one of the very best Scotland-based gardens photographers to illustrate a beautiful, but far-flung garden, surrounding the Ruuval lighthouse on Islay, plus our Picture Editor, Lucy Ford, organising lots of individual open air photo shoots with The Princess’s nominated champions of the countryside.’

The magazine’s Deputy Editor Kate Green and freelance photographer Sarah Farnsworth were also delighted to be invited to The Princess’s home at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire, to illustrate her dedication to organic farming and rare breeds.

Once all the words and pictures were ready, the work of putting together the pages could began.

‘Once we’d gathered all articles and images, our talented design team — led by our Art Editor, Emma Earnshaw — set to work creating a series of eye-catching layouts, which were then expertly fitted by our Chief Sub-Editor, Octavia Pollock’ Paula continues. ‘It was a massive effort on behalf of the entire team, including our Photographic Library Manager, Melanie Bryan, who met me just off the A303 to hand over the page proofs ahead of our meeting with The Princess.

‘Having sent nigh on 1,000 emails and made countless telephone calls, we are really proud of the edition and the way it reflects The Princess’s commitment to the countryside and more than 300 patronages,’ enthuses Paula, who, along with Country Life’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Hedges met The Princess at Gatcombe in mid-July to go through the final page proofs.

The issue also includes a 2,000-word leader article, which The Princess wrote on her own iPad, in which she credits her parents for instilling her appreciation of Nature — ‘Both my parents had a love and understanding of the natural world through their own experiences’ — and explains how fortunate she feels to have spent ‘most of my life in the countryside’.

Mark Hedges concludes: ‘It was an absolute delight to have The Princess Royal as our guest editor. Her passion for the countryside shines through with every feature, combined with her concerns that the right action is taken to safeguard the rural way of life for future generations, from providing affordable housing to dealing with fly tipping. We do hope our special edition makes a very fitting 70th birthday present.’

Does this movie have a good name?

With Love, Christmas is a bad, forgettable name for this movie, which ought to have been called Dear Secret Santa, but unfortunately Hallmark already used up that name for a Tatyana Ali vehicle back in 2014:

You know guys, that was three whole years ago, since which time you’ve made approximately eight hundred more Christmas movies, so we would actually have allowed you a little recycling.

Are we located in a small, picturesque, snow-covered town?

Yep. The action takes place in a charming Connecticut hamlet straight out of Gilmore Girls. I don’t understand whether the protagonist’s workplace, Farnsworth Advertising, has its HQ here too, or if she travels to a nearby city for work or something. I could find out by watching the movie again, but the thing is that I do not want to watch the movie again.

Is the lead character’s name festive?

Do you find the name Melanie Welch festive? Well? Do you??

How busy is said lady?

You wouldn’t understand how it feels to be pitching for the crucial Christmas campaign for phone company Evergreen Mobile, while also being told by everyone around you that you are “too nice”, while also needing to find the perfect Secret Santa gift for some guy in your office you don’t know, while also trying to get promoted to the position of Creative Director, while also looking after a cat called Mittens. But it feels busy, I tell you!

How are everyone’s Christmas Spirit levels?

Melanie is into Christmas - you know, the way ladies are:

However! Her standoffish colleague, Donovan, is not!

Non-exhaustive list of Donovan’s Scrooge-like leanings:

Nicknamed “Frosty the Snowman” by a co-worker.

Announces early on that “the only thing magical about Christmas are the sales numbers”.

Doesn’t eat sugar.

Maybe Donovan has some bad yuletide memories from his childhood?

Melanie and Donovan’s different levels of commitment to Christmas come in useful though, when they’re thrown together to work on the aforementioned advertising pitch. Melanie brings the heart, and Donovan brings the male model blankness:

And what do you know? - they win the pitch! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Is this movie bang on trend?

This movie is so modern, it picks up right where You’ve Got Mail left off, just nineteen years ago!

You see, Melanie draws Donovan’s name in the office Secret Santa. But because Donovan is a man of mystery she doesn’t know what to get him, so Melanie super-stalks him - involving setting up a special e-mail account from which to message him:

Things progress, and while Melanie is still trying to figure out whether Donovan would prefer socks or soap-on-a-rope, it starts to get pretty deep:

All this secret sexting with Santa opens Donovan up to the true meaning of Christmas, and he ends up all: UR HOT WANNA B MY GF?

Note: Donovan’s e-mail address is [email protected], in case you’d like to flirt with him via the ‘QuestSeek’ e-mail interface; but bear in mind that - spoiler warning! - he does end up with Melanie, and is fictional.

Does anything magical or supernatural happen?

My maths isn’t great, but it seems like an extraordinary coincidence that in the whole advertising agency, Melanie gets Donovan as her Secret Santa, and Donovan gets Melanie. YAY FATE!

Does a misunderstanding threaten the lady’s path to Happy Ever After with the man?

Indeed! Donovan is suspicious at first that Melanie is his Secret Santa. That is until she uses the ‘delayed email feature’ on the new Evergreen mobile phone, which allows her to send Donovan a message while they are face-to-face, so he concludes it can’t possibly be from her.

BUT, Melanie’s so good at throwing him off the trail that he then decides that the co-worker he’s crushing on over e-mail must actually be this chick called Alicia:

And then he literally asks Alicia out and goes on a date with her and there’s no way this can work out which is really mean of Hallmark because Alicia’s NOT EVEN A BAD PERSON! Poor Alicia.

Any missed opportunities?

Why isn’t Alicia a bad person? She has black hair and red lips FFS - make her at least a tad stuck-up.

We only get to see the last 5 seconds of the advert Melanie and Donovan make together. We don’t even get to see them filming it! Owww I want to see it, it hurts :(

I really wish someone at the office party had pushed someone else into the cupcakes in the foreground:

Best dialogue?

“Santa, I think we should meet.”

On reflection, is this movie about Christmas?

The bride, Allison is a part of the Mayhar Design team and when it came to styling a wedding for one of their own? Well, they delivered. Big time. I’m predicting this day as one of our very favorites of the year, and with one look at the images by Michelle Boyd, I guarantee you’ll agree.

From Melanie, of Mayhar Designs… I have had the privilege of knowing Allison for just over three years. Within that time frame, she has loaned her heart, her spirit, her incredibly hard working attitude and energy and her grace to both my life and to the lives of every single Mayhar client and vendor alike. She has stood beside us at every single wedding, helping to ensure that each bride and family member was cared for and that each detail was perfectly placed. She is the type of colleague who gets personally thanked in Father of the Bride Speeches. She is a truly amazing friend and person and I was beyond thrilled when she asked us to help plan her own wedding, which took place this past November in San Antonio.

When we sat down to discuss her wishes for the day, she kept going back to an organic yet classic design with thoughtful details and an overarching atmosphere that was inviting and welcoming. She wanted a space that was rich in texture and soft color and made each and every guest feel incredibly special. It was such a joy to be a part of this celebration! I hope that we did her greatest wishes justice!

Say Hello To Our New Favorite Garden Wedding!

If insanely gorgeous floral design is your thing – major kudos to Without Wax, Katy – this wedding is for you. The bride, Allison is a part of the Mayhar Design team and when it came to styling a wedding for one of their own? Well, they delivered. Big time. I’m predicting this day as one of our very favorites of the year, and with one look at the images by Michelle Boyd, I guarantee you’ll agree.

From Melanie, of Mayhar Designs… I have had the privilege of knowing Allison for just over three years. Within that time frame, she has loaned her heart, her spirit, her incredibly hard working attitude and energy and her grace to both my life and to the lives of every single Mayhar client and vendor alike. She has stood beside us at every single wedding, helping to ensure that each bride and family member was cared for and that each detail was perfectly placed. She is the type of colleague who gets personally thanked in Father of the Bride Speeches. She is a truly amazing friend and person and I was beyond thrilled when she asked us to help plan her own wedding, which took place this past November in San Antonio.

When we sat down to discuss her wishes for the day, she kept going back to an organic yet classic design with thoughtful details and an overarching atmosphere that was inviting and welcoming. She wanted a space that was rich in texture and soft color and made each and every guest feel incredibly special. It was such a joy to be a part of this celebration! I hope that we did her greatest wishes justice!
