That will fill you with horror

Chapter 4/5 of “You’d be wise to beware”
Prompts: Asphyxiation, Surgery, Allergic reaction, Short of breath, Loss of consciousness, Vomiting, Field medicine, Wicked wings, Vicious venom, Puncture wound
Fandom: The Witcher
Characters: Geralt of Rivia, Jaskier, Cahir
Rating: Mature
“Geralt!” Jaskier and Cahir shout almost simultaneously, shocked to see their friend go down. The huge, winged beast must have got him somehow. They both run toward him as fast as they can. Hopefully, it is nothing serious, nothing a Witcher potion and perhaps the one or other bandage cannot fix.
Cahir is first to reach him. Lying supine, Geralt looks ghastly pale underneath all the blood, but his eyes are open and he is breathing. Good. Cahir kneels down by his comrade’s side.
“Geralt, what’s wrong?" he asks, scanning his friend’s body for visible injuries that might have caused his collapse. However, with all the monster blood on him, it is difficult to tell if he is injured and bleeding himself. As far as he can see, there are no obvious tears in his shirt or pants, or gaping wounds.
“Got me with its tail, left shoulder,” Geralt grunts through gritted teeth.
“Venom?”
Geralt grunts again. It sounds like a yes. Fuck. Cahir has a closer look at the beast. It is huge. Definitely bigger than the wyvern he killed just a few days ago. At first glance it looks quite similar to the black ornithosaur. A wide open, menacing maw full of sharp white, conical teeth in a narrow, triangular head, the purplish forked tongue lolling onto the blood-covered stone. It also has a long, snake-like neck and enormous, bat-like wings. But the wings’ membrane as well as the beast’s scales are of a very light, slate blue colour, not so much different from the surrounding rocks. They reflect the sunlight so strongly, the creature's contours are blurry and it is hardly possible to look at it for longer than a few moments without feeling blinded. Cahir blinks. The tail, what does its tail look like? He forces himself to glance at the dead monster again, squinting and shading his eyes with one hand. The tail does not end in the wyvern-typical trident but bears one single, stiletto-like sting protruding from a bulbous structure. A venom bladder? Like in the tail of a scorpion? Cahir has never seen anything like it in the books about dragons and other draconids. Is it something new that has arrived to the continent via the monoliths? Damn it. Hopefully, it is not lethal, at least not for a Witcher.
“Which potions do you need?” he asks Geralt. Of course, it is better to ingest the elixirs before a fight, but many can also be used as healing potions in case of an injury.
"Golden Oriole," the Witcher pants, "and Lion's Mane. In the holster."
Cahir has not studied Witcher potions as much as monsters since he is not a real Witcher and would die if he took any of them, but from what he knows about the requested potions, they make sense. Lion's Mane works as a general pain killer while Golden Oriole is an elixir used by Witchers and mages to both prevent and treat poisoning from many sources, such as corpse-venom from a graveir, common snake and spider venoms, the venom of wyverns, basilisks and of numerous other monsters. He scans through the several potions vials strapped to Geralt's thigh. The flask with the Golden Oriole is easy to recognise by the potion's golden colour. Another one filled with a whitish liquid sports a lion's head on the stopper. Must be the Lion's Mane. Cahir takes both vials out of the black leather holster and, while Jaskier supports Geralt's head, holds them to the Witcher's pale lips, one after the other. Grimacing, Geralt downs the content of the Lion's Mane and half of the Golden Oriole. Then he lies back down with a groan.
"I'll have a look at your shoulder now," Cahir warns and carefully turns his friend over a little. "Jaskier, hold him like this."
While the bard keeps Geralt in position, Cahir draws a dagger from his belt and cuts open his friend's blood-soaked shirt at the back of the left shoulder. There is a small puncture wound in the muscle directly below the glenohumeral joint. The tissue around it is puffy and irritated, however, besides this, the injury looks pretty harmless. Too bad it obviously is not, otherwise Geralt would not have dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Cahir pours the rest of the Golden Oriole over the wound. There is a sizzling sound and a yellowish vapour rises from the injured spot. Geralt moans, biting his lips. After only a minute, the wound looks much improved, though. It does not even need a bandage as the ugly hole in the skin has closed up almost completely. Gently, Jaskier lets Geralt slide back onto the rocky ground, breathing a sigh of relief. The potions seem to help. Not only has the wound healed surprisingly fast and nicely, but Geralt does not appear to be in as much pain as before. His jaws and fists are not clenched in agony anymore like when they found him. Still, something must be wrong. The white-haired Witcher is becoming increasingly short of breath and does not make any move to stand up. Not good.
“What else do we do?” Jaskier asks worriedly and takes his friend’s hand in his. It feels awfully cold and clammy. Fuck. Geralt does not look good at all despite the potions.
“I’m sorry,” Geralt rasps softly, struggling for air. He closes his eyes. “Should have - listened to you.”
“What are you talking about? Geralt?” Jaskier’s shakes his friend’s shoulder when he fails to react to the bard's question. “Geralt!” With effort, the Witcher opens his eyes again.
“Seems they do exist. Your monsters,” he gasps. “The flying drake—”
That will fill you with horror. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Mediwhump May Day 2 - Stitches
Tumblr media
CW: Forced medical procedure, stitches
AN: Sorry for the lazier comics, I got a new project at work and need to preserve my wrists.
@mediwhumpmay
Kotoru had never been a fan of consecrated whips, and he had never met a wielder who hadn't been a raging sadist. But he was also not nearly high enough in this chain of command to make a point about it. Besides, he had been lucky to bargain for this.
After the recent string of escape attempts, the council had been discussing terminating his project and executing his ward. It had taken equal parts groveling and providing evidence of his success to allow them to settle on a lesser punishment.
Of course this was intended as a punishment for him as well, stitching the bleeding whip marks as the demon wailed on the table below him. With this being a consecrated whip, Aziphem wouldn't heal without intervention and he didn't want to risk the injuries getting worse.
Maybe this would convince that foolish demon to stay close to him, to work with him, that he wasn't the worst angel he could have been given to.

I'm going to be attempting to write something daily in May (wish me luck!). Could be a drabble, could be a hundred words on a WIP, I'm just trying to build a regular writing habit again. Today it comes in the flavour of a MediWhump May prompt.
Pe-series, Mac and Jack, Sandbox double drabble for the prompt 'IV/Cannula'.
“Hey, c’mon now, leave that alone.” Jack said, peeling away the wandering fingers that had once again started to pick at the adhesive securing the IV. Annoyed eyes, softened by exhaustion, glared at him briefly before slipping shut again. He could go. He should go. There was no reason for him to be here. No reason at all. Except, the staff here were busy, too busy to keep an eye on a kid who was barely awake and very much did not want the cannula in the back of their hand. So here he was. Protector of the intravenous hydration. Had nothing to do with how he’d been scared to death when Macgyver had collapsed on him earlier. The worry that hadn’t quite left him, even after the prognosis of a full recovery with some rest and fluids. Kid was his responsibility. That’s all it was. He wasn’t getting attached to his bomb nerd who apparently came with a distinct lack of self preservation. He was just making sure dehydration didn’t take him out before he shipped out, back to Texas in nine days and counting. There was no reason for him to be here. None at all. And yet.

Mediwhump May Day 1 - IV
@mediwhumpmay Hard capping myself at 1k words for each of these in the hope I finish an event at one point. Liliana belongs to @actress4him! In this AU, the Doc works as a freelance clinician serving the criminal underworld (including vigilantes and other unregistered metahumans and nonhumans). The rustling of bedsheets caught the Doctor’s attention, dragging them from their work and to their patient’s bedside. The young lady looked much better than before, at least, and it would probably be safe to release her in a couple of hours once the saline drip had run its course and they’d completed a final evaluation. She did still seem rather disoriented, however, which they supposed was to be expected, but running the bag out did still seem like a good idea.
“Ah, with us again, I see. Liliana, was it? How are you feeling?”
The girl was quite confused, blinking against the lab lights and pulling at the tubing. “W-where am I? I have to get…”
They gently pressed her hands back to the bedsheets. “Leave those alone, yes? You are in my clinic, you are safe here. I am treating you for severe dehydration. I was informed you had fainted, and I find that to be consistent with your vitals and other symptoms.”
This didn’t calm her at all. “I-I have to… I have to get back… They’ll look for me…” She pulled against their hands, but with little effort, evidently still tired.
Ah, so that’s all it was. “Worry not, my dear. Your team is aware of your location. They brought you to me, I will make you well again, and you will return. It should only be a couple of hours until they fetch you.” The fiery young woman who had come to the door had seemed rather annoyed to have to be there at all, but that wasn’t any of the Doctor’s business.
Recognition ignited in Liliana’s eyes. “You… you’re the doctor with no name.” They nodded. ‘The nameless doctor’ was an appellation they would not reject, though they would have chosen something different. “You’re expensive,” she added, sullen and with the faintest hint of reproach.
They chuckled. “Perhaps, but I am also discreet, no? You receive treatment, and no one else is the wiser. Regardless, all you required was two bags of intravenous saline and a few hours of my time I could spend on my research. It would be ridiculous for me to have you pay through the nose for that. No, no. It will be next to nothing, I assure you.” Her eyes still held traces of confusion, though whether because their use of English idioms was not quite correct or for another reason, they weren’t sure.
“They’re coming back for me.” Liliana did not seem enthused by this prospect, but rather, resigned to some sort of fate. Which again, wasn’t any of their business, but a person could be allowed a degree of curiosity.
The heart monitor beeped softly (pulse seventy-nine, blood pressure ninety-five over sixty) in the pause that stretched between them before the Doctor spoke. “You… do not wish to return to them?”
She looked up in alarm. “N-no, I w-want to go back!” they got the idea that she didn’t, actually, but that there would be consequences for voicing that desire.
“Our conversations are just between us. I will discuss nothing you say here with any other person.” They wouldn’t have lasted very long here if they were in the business of selling people out.
Liliana shook her head, though, unwilling to risk it. Smart girl. Even the small pots have ears, after all. Instead, the pair sat in silence, listening to the chirping of the equipment and the wind keening through the streets outside the clinic. The lab lamp flickered occasionally, and the Doctor reminded themselves to go out and buy new bulbs. It was usually quiet in the clinic. The Doctor found the stillness quite pleasant, even though it was often interrupted by shouting, slamming doors, and quite a lot of bleeding.
The girl pulled gently on the tape holding the intravenous tube. “How much longer...?”
The Doctor put their glasses back onto their face and squinted at the measurement lines on the bag. “Only another hour or so.”
Liliana didn’t respond, and the two sat in silence as it gradually began to rain. Taglist: @i-eat-worlds mentioned they liked the doc so i'm tagging you, let me know if you'd prefer i not do that!

Unfortunately, the hunt is not as easy as expected ...
They can hear the song even before they open the door of the little tavern. Geralt's eyes grow wide with surprise. This cannot be possible, can it? What are the odds of running into Jaskier by sheer accident, and here of all places? It must be somebody else who is performing his friend's most popular song. But the voice, he would recognise it anywhere, Geralt is sure of it. It sounds exactly like the bard's, his bard's. Nobody could cover the song so perfectly, could they? Not unless it is a doppler. Would a doppler pose as Jaskier to profit from his fame, Geralt wonders. It is not impossible, but why on the continent would a doppler choose to do so in this out-of-the-way place? Only few people populate the remote mountain region, and they are not exactly famous for being rich or generous. He would not have bothered taking the contract for the myriapod if he were only interested in the - pretty scant - payment. No, he wants to find out if it is another one of those monolith creatures, like the last myriapod he slew, and somehow connected to other spheres and to Ciri. Plus, according to what the mayor has just told them, the monster has eaten dozens of sheep already and come dangerously close to the village. So far, no human has been hurt, however, it might only be a matter of time before things get ugly. Better to take care of the beast now.
"Anything the matter?" Cahir asks softly when Geralt does not make a move to press down the door handle but remains rooted to the doorstep listening to the music.
"Don't know yet," Geralt mutters, a little puzzled by the question, but then he remembers. Cahir has not seen Jaskier or heard any of his songs since he lost his memory. The snippets of the melody and lyrics that waft through the open window would mean nothing to him. "We'd better be on our guard," he adds. "Something fishy going on here." Or not? Perhaps he is just a little paranoid. There might be a simple explanation for this remarkable coincidence. Well, only one way to find out. Determined, Geralt opens the door and enters the tap room, Cahir following close behind.

White Walls Closing In (Mediwhump May 2023, Day 7 First Night In Hospital)
This fic contains hospitalisation, mentions of a benign tumour, mentions of future surgery and an underaged whumpee. Please read with discretion.
As a Son of Apollo, one could have thought that Will Solace would be comfortable with hospitals.
He could spend entire days at the Camp Half-Blood infirmary and in fact he had done just that countless times while looking after the sick and wounded. If anything, Will felt at home surrounded by bandages and ambrosia squares, always having some task that needed to be completed or some Camper to talk to. The infirmary was familiar, it was safe. If he would be so bold, the Infirmary was his Domain.
But here? With the white walls and the whirling machines and the strangers who kept poking and prodding him as if his blood could have possibly changed in the last half hour? It was unfamiliar and unsafe and even if Will logically knew why he was here he still did not feel as though he belonged.
Nico nudged him.
"I'm thinking." Will claimed.
Nico didn't bother with a retort about how Connect Four wasn't that complicated of a game, waiting almost patiently for Will to make his move. Nico’s silence made Will want to claw his skin off for some reason and when the machine next to him started pipping loudly again Will curled his hands into fists.
Will intrinsically knew how to fix the machine, there was simply a kink in the IV line again and all he had to do was straighten it and acknowledge the alert. Almost every single thing in this building Will could sense, and if need be fix, because every singly thing had been made by a Child of Apollo that had been guided by the great God of Healing and yet when Will had tried to use that knowledge to fix the machine earlier, he had been yelled at by a particularly annoying nurse and told not to touch anything else.
The alert kept sounding, echoing in Will’s mind. He tried to focus on something else, anything else. Nico’s knee pressed up against his own, the pattern that was slowly being created in their game, the smell of the Hyacinth’s that Kayla had bought for him.
But the alert was too loud, it was too consistent. It was echoing, again and again, and he swore that it was the only sound that has ever existed.
Will slammed his fist into the table, knocking plastic coins everywhere.
Nico barely reacted, only pressing his knee against Will’s again but if anything that just made Will even more frustrated.
“What?” Will growled.
The Son of Hades stayed silent, dark eyes blinking slowly.
It's wasn’t like Will didn't know that Nico was just as uncomfortable as he was, it couldn’t be easy for Nico to be in a place that has seen so much death, but right now everything was just too much and Nico’s silence was just letting that infernal machine be all the louder.
Nico pushed the table off to the side and grabbed Will’s hand.
Will’s shoulders dropped.
“I hate this.” He whispered.
“I know.” Nico said.
“I’m a Son of Apollo. I should be able to fix this. I should be able to fix me.”
They had had this conversation before.
Over the years, Will has treated almost every single camper at Camp Half-Blood. Some of their injuries were mere scratches or minor burns, things that faded away with a simple hum and some ointment. Others were more serious. Dislocations, broken bones. Detached limbs, even, thank you Paolo.
Will has literally brought more people back from the brink of death than he could even remember and yet for all that, Will couldn’t fix a stupid tumour on his stupid right lung. It was benign, at least as far as he could sense, but even benign things had the possibility of becoming malignant if left untreated.
If he could do the surgery himself he would have already done so. Kayla and Austin had confronted him long after Will had already sensed the tumour, both of them intrinsically knowing that something was wrong with him but as much as Will begged them to keep it quiet, they had told Chiron.
And Chiron had told him to go to the hospital.
It didn’t make any sense; Even if Will couldn’t do surgery on himself, he would have trusted Kayla and Austin with his care because they were children of Apollo too and with enough thorough instruction they could do what was needed.
Why go to a mortal hospital when they were literally the progeny of the God of Healing?
And why was that stupid machine still making that stupid alert and why hadn’t some nurse come in to fix it already?
Will let go of Nico’s hand, twisting around so that he could acknowledge the alert on the drip machine, readjusting the flow rate as he did so to make it go faster.
“Will,” Nico warned.
“It’s fine.” Will said. “I can tolerate it.”
The immunotherapy mixture they were giving him wasn’t quite chemotherapy but he had still been warned about the similar possible side effects and while he didn’t exactly want to experience nausea or fatigue, he could not stand the idea of trying to sleep with the IV still in not that he thought he could sleep here anyway.
Someone cleared their throat and Will scrambled away from the machine, making it start alerting all over again.
Doctor Storey came over, acknowledged the alert and reset the flow rate. She did not bother to admonish Will, another conversation that had already happened countless times just in the few hours he has been here for.
“Mr. di Angelo,” She said instead. “I’m afraid visiting hours are over for the night but you’re more than welcome to come back at nine am tomorrow morning, pre-op doesn’t start until eleven.”
Will had known that this was coming and yet his blood still ran cold at the thought of Nico leaving him. He looked up sharply at his boyfriend who made no attempt to stand from the bed. Maybe he was going to stay after all, maybe he was going to intimidate the doctor into breaking the rules and maybe Will wasn’t going to have to spend his first night in hospital all alone after all.
Nico leant forward and kissed Will’s forehead gently before pulling away and standing up.
Will refused to watch him go, even when Nico hesitated at the door, focusing instead on holding back the tears that were building in his eyes.
“I’m just going to check your vitals one more time and then you can get some sleep.” Doctor Storey said.
“My vitals are fine.” Will shot back. “Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, all within normal range. You can go now.”
“Will,” Doctor Storey sighed. “I know you said that your father is some kind of Doctor, but right now you are my patient and I need to treat you like all of my other patients.”
Will did not want to be angry with her. He didn’t like to be angry with anyone and like she said, she was just trying to do her job. But he was the Son of Apollo and as such he knew exactly what he was talking about because this was his body and he knew everything there was to know about himself.
Doctor Storey did her checks anyway, confirming that surprise surprise his levels were all normal.
“Rest,” She said. “Tomorrow is a big day.”
It took all of his willpower to not roll his eyes as she at last left him.
The room immediately felt too big, the white walls stretching on forever while at the same time feeling like they were closing in on him. His attention bounced between all of the things around him from the small couch below the curtained window to the too bright lights above him that Doctor Storey had supposedly dimmed on her way out to the immunotherapy concoction that bled into him so infuriatingly slowly.
These weren’t even his own clothes, it was a thin gown that somehow both dug into his skin and didn’t feel substantial enough.
While ADHD often helped during battles, not to mention allowing him to juggle the treatment of multiple patients at the one time, right now it was doing nothing but giving him nothing but hell.
If only to try to let out some of the energy that was so suddenly bubbling within him Will increased the flow rate of his IV once again but that only took a moment and he was left wanting to claw his skin off in the too loud silence that followed.
The curtains were closed.
That would be something he could fix, he could open them up and maybe that would distract him long enough to forget everything else because even if his Dad wasn’t actually here at least Will would be able to sense his presence in the Sun.
He scrambled up off the bed, nearly overbalancing as the world spun around him.
He pushed aside the dizziness, knowing that he was just imagining it given that just hours before Will had been feeling perfectly fine. Gripping onto the machine that the IV was hooked through, refusing to look at the yellow fluid that was flowed within it, Will went to the window.
Will had to reach across the couch to get to the curtains but he didn’t care, suddenly desperate to have them open no matter what.
A small part of him had already known what he would find and yet the rest of him still wanted to cry when he saw that the Sun had already fully set with the moon having already taken its place and while Will knew that the Moon was still connected to him in a way, it was nothing compared to the Sun.
Will felt drained suddenly and his knees buckled but he did not fall, a hand gripping onto his elbow.
“Falling for me already, Solace?”
Will was so happy to see Nico at all that he didn’t mind the cheesy line and instead just thew himself at the smaller boy and hugged him. After a moment, Nico’s arms wrapped around Will just as tightly and they stayed there before Will at last felt strong enough to pull away again.
“I thought you left.” Will said, trying his hardest to keep the hurt from his voice.
“Of course not.” Nico said. “I just had to wait a few minutes before shadow traveling back. Are you… Okay?”
“I am now.” Will said. “So, are we going to hatch some exciting escape plan or what?”
“Will.”
Will dropped his shoulders, taking in a deep breath. Even doing that much made Will’s head spin a little and his healing powers alerted him of the tumour that he already knew was there and if that wasn’t annoying enough the machine he was lugging around started screaming at him again.
Will adjusted the line quickly and acknowledged the alert, and if he muttered a curse as he did so then that was his own business.
Nico chuckled, reaching out and grabbing his hand.
“It’s going to be fine.” Nico said.
“I know.” Will said.
“And I’ll be with you the whole way.”
Will felt warmth bloom inside his chest and he squeezed Nico’s hand back tightly.
“I know.” He said. “I love you.”
“I love you too so get back into bed before I have to drag you there, you look exhausted.”
If Will was being honest, he was exhausted. In order to be here and get the treatment he needed, Will was going to have to relinquish all control over his own body and he hated it. He hated that he couldn’t fix this himself, he hated that even now he could sense the tumour nestled deep in his lung, he hated that there was nothing he could do but accept the help of mortal doctors.
Will once more readjusted the flow rate on the drip, setting it back to the right rate that would keep the worst of the side effects away.
It was going to take time to get used to being in the hospital, just like it was going to take time for him to fully recover from tomorrows surgery.
Nico guided Will to the bed and while Will was strong enough to walk by himself, it felt nice to trust Nico to set the pace. Once Will was lying down, the exhaustion suddenly weighed heavily on him and Will had to fight to keep his eyes open.
“By the way,” Nico said. “I brought you something.”
He held out a small ball and when it lit up a warm gold, Will found himself falling in love with Nico di Angelo all over again.
“A night light.” Nico said. “For a Night Light.”
While this was just a hospital room and not the pits of Tartarus, the small orb still made everything feel a little better and when Nico crawled into bed next to Will, holding him close, that made Will feel a little bit better too.
And, when an hour later Nico had to stumble out of the bed and into the shadows nearly face planting in the process as a nurse came to check on Will again? Now that definitely made him feel better.

Mediwhump May Day 2: Stitches
Challenge: @mediwhumpmay 2023 Fandom: Marvel - Winter Soldier/Black Widow Prompt: Day 2: Stitches Tags/Warnings: hurt/comfort, medical whump, stitches/sutures
Bucky jerks as Natasha’s needle digs deep.
“Stop squirming,” she mutters. “This is hard enough as it is.”
“I promise, this isn’t more fun for me,” he shoots back.
The gash she’s stitching is on the back and inside of his left thigh. A little deeper, a little more to the left, and she might have been trying to find a surgeon to repair a severed hamstring on short notice, rather than sewing her partner back up inside the loo of a nearly-abandoned petrol station.
There’s just enough room for her to sit on the toilet and him to balance on his right foot, pressed against the door, while she works on the laceration, blood streaming down his leg, soaking the black trousers around his ankles. He’s going to leave a trail of bloody footprints if they’re not careful. From the smell of things, though, a makeshift surgery isn’t the worst thing that has happened here. The smell of blood barely registers above the piss and shit.
It’s not the best place to be doing this, but it’s not the worst either of them have done this, either. She wipes blood away to see the seam starting to form under the carefully laid suture.
“Are you done?” he asks in her pause.
“Almost. I’m worried about how much blood you’re losing.”
He grunts and shrugs with one shoulder, unconcerned. His metal arm is doing the work of holding him up in the stall, fingers locked over the door. He’s holding a pistol in his right hand, ready to burst through the door if someone tries to attack them.
For a moment, Natasha imagines him doing that with his trousers still around his ankles and she snorts with amusement.
“You think this is funny?” He tries to crane his head around to see her, but he can’t without moving his body and her needle goes wide again. “Ow! Fuck!”
“Stop moving!” She lightly swats his ass in admonishment, but he doesn’t move again.
“Fuck you.”
“In the gas station bathroom? Isn’t that a little down and dirty for you?” She purrs coyly and is delighted when she sees a flush in his ass cheeks - proving that she still has it and he hasn’t lost nearly as much blood as she feared.
“Natalia, I swear to god-”
“There, we’re done.” She finishes her stitching and ties off the suture. She gropes for a gauze pad and holds it to the laceration. “Can you put weight on this leg?”
Bucky shuts up and tries, too much weight at first and his knee buckles. The steel door of the stall groans under his weight as he catches himself. “No, no, I’m fine. Give me a sec.”
This time he balances a little more carefully and Natasha can see the moment that he forcibly sets aside pain, setting his shoulders, shaking his head.
She hates this, hates seeing him reach for conditioning he never should have endured.
But right now? Right now he needs it and frankly, so does she if they’re going to make it out.
She finishes wrapping the bandage around his leg and puts away the kit while he pulls his trousers back up and settles his belt. They wash their hands in silence.
Natasha reaches for the lock on the door and hesitates only long enough to see Bucky’s glazed eyes and pale skin under his stubble. But whatever he’d been thinking gets pushed to the side.
He meets her eyes and nods once, answering the unasked question. “Yeah, I’m good. Let’s go.”

Mediwhump May - Day 8
"Scared of Blood"
(Dark Shadows 1966)
@mediwhumpmay
Willie knew he’d made a mistake before he’d even slipped. He had been sawing a piece of wood to size to repair the floor. A hand in the wrong spot. The gulf of time between realization and the consequences. He knew he had messed up. But he could do nothing to stop it.
The saw skipped.
White hot pain across Willie’s wrist, burning and tearing.
He froze.
Willie watched the blood bloom in the ragged wound. He let the saw drop to the floor with a clatter. He dimly heard himself panting. He couldn’t breathe. There wasn’t any air. His fingers went to his collar to loosen the buttons there but his hands were shaking too much.
Dark spots danced at the edges of his vision. The room whirled around him.
Blood ran down Willie’s arm from the wound, red and dark. He watched it drip onto the floor.
No, please, no.
It couldn’t happen again. He couldn’t bear it if it happened again.
Willie clamped a hand over the wound. He squeezed his eyes shut. That helped. A little. Not much.
He couldn’t breathe. His heart raced and stuttered. He was dizzy and hot and cold and sweating and oh god-
Those teeth were in him again.
He was alone in the dark. Alone with the monster. He was alone and no one was coming to save him.
Willie scrambled backward across the floor until his back hit the wall. He pulled his knees to his chest. He held his bleeding wrist close to his chest. Covering it. Hiding it.
Yes, hide it. If no one sees, he’s safe. No one can see it.
Warm blood, slick against his skin, coated his hands now.
Don’t look at it. Never look at it.
The wound throbbed and burned.
Willie slumped down to the floor. It was dusty but cool. He was dizzy. He kept his eyes closed. He couldn’t breathe. He was dying, wasn’t he? Dying alone in the dark. Again.
Ringing in his ears. Everything faded away. Faded to darkness.
