#maybe it was just Jace and Porter
don’t min me just putting on my clown makeup here, but I think it’s possible that KLCK *didn’t* kill Lucy
“… Lucy had multiple assailants. There’s lacerations, there’s breaks, there’s clear spell damage”
You could get that just as easily from just a gloomstalker ranger, a barbarian, and a wizard as you would with all five of them (maybe Ruben’s in there too, but it’s funniest to me if Fig has been torturing him when he’s not done it). Or maybe Ruben led KLCK away/distracted her.
Porter tells KLCK to kill Lucy. KLCK puts in the god change paperwork instead. Lucy balks. Or Porter doesn’t buy it. either way, the other three are sent to take care of it since KLCK obviously can’t. Lucy doesn’t come back.
Kipperlilly Copperkettle starts planning.

This is probably nothing but thinking about jace and what his motivation could be besides him and porter being in some kind of toxic yaoi situationship and how they've been a duo since the beginning, what if jace wanted Cassandra's domain to match Porter taking Ankara's

Regarding my “Jace is not actually evil and that overheard conversation is intentionally misleading” theory, I want to raise the possibility that Henry was planted by the Rat Grinders for nefarious reasons.
He’s apparently relatively new, I believe that this is his first year in this position but I could be wrong. If he’s been acting overly familiar and sticking his nose into stuff maybe quite overeagerly, that could explain Jace’s veteran educator comment.

i appreciate that the starbreaker fandom (and the jace stans specifically) all looked at the finale and said "well if brennan is gonna let this perfectly good twink go to waste, we'll take him." now he's ours and i think that's beautiful.

is jace prime even alive still? DOES IT MATTER?? are they four separate jaces that are split from one or did one jace create three other jaces?

I don’t think Jace is working with porter I think the man is being controlled by him what if he befriended him and then Jace was the first victim porter started with in freshman year and then used him to lure people in

I do wonder how long Jace has been working at aguefort if he’s the de facto interim vice principal and referred to himself as a ‘veteran educator.’ Like-
Was he a fresh 20-something when he started working there, full of hope and excitement and purpose. Maybe adventuring didn’t work out for him but this? Helping kids become better adventurers than he ever could? He could do this. He loved seeing the joy and wonder on his student’s faces once they learned more about their magic and learned to harness it just like he did when he was a kid. It’s nice and It’s comfortable, he likes his job.
By the time he’s in his 40s he’s a little more tired, a little more bored, but still comfortable. It’s been 20 long years and he wants a little more than still comfortable.

Jace Subclass
Working theory is Jace is an aberrant mind sorcerer. likely level sixteen or seventeen almost definitely using the metamagic distant spell.
Even without Porter, whos likely a level sixteen or seventeen barbarian paladin, this would be a tough fight.
I kinda cant wait to see how this pans out.

I can't stop thinking about Gorgug's roll against Jace's spell. I looked it up, and it seems like the highest spell save DC (level 20, max proficiency modifier) is 20. So unless Jace had some extra juice from somewhere, Gorgug saved on that 22.
Emily or Siobhan suggested it was Detect Thoughts to get Ankarna's name. But if that was the case, Gorgug would know that; it's part of the spell. Then again, I don't see many other Wisdom saving throw spells in the sorcerer's kit that make sense for that arrival-cast-recall strategy. So maybe it was Detect Thoughts and Brennan just forgot.
Regardless of what it was, I am just so delighted that they targeted Gorgug.
Porter always underestimated him AND it's textbook strategy to hit the barbarian with a Wisdom saving throw. They were so sure that they had it in the bag that they had recall IMMEDIATELY on hand.
But Gorgug isn't by the book. He hasn't been since day one. And even rolling with disadvantage, he made them leave with nothing.

maybe a slightly unpopular opinion but I love how this season of D20 is about the boring day to day of high school along with all the usual mystery and hijinks. I like how after the wacky chaos and Spring Break Vibes we have to see the characters actually balance all their high school responsibilities, and I love the downtime mechanics. I like how all the running gags from season 1 - D20's first season - are getting fleshed out and explored and made serious, like Fig attending barbarian classes and Porter not liking Gorgug. I like how on some level the party is just exhausted from spending all summer saving the world instead of doing dumb teenage things. I like how the structure of D20 means that we actually do play out the long-term consequences of some of the party's victories that would have been in the endgame of most campaigns (eg: Adaine killing her terrible father). I like how Kristen's story especially echoes this, with her being told that she has to get good at the less flashy stuff, not just the huge miracles. also I definitely think Jace, who was killed by Aguefort very early in the first season, killed Yolanda.

This last episode has me feeling like I need to make a conspiracy board here’s what we learned:
Devil’s Honey was originally used to lie during prayer (insane implications)
Rogue Teacher is a ghost
Ratgrinders went to the mountains of chaos “many times”
Kipperlilly has anger issues and has been talking about Riz since Freshman year
Kipperlilly goes to a cemetery in Ashbury (and Brennan implied there’s a connection between this and the Rogue Teacher being a ghost)
Henry Hopclap is concerned about Reuben Hopclap, and Jace Stardiamond is aggressively shutting down Henry’s attempts to discuss it
Lola Embers told Jace Stardiamond about fake the Lucy Frostblade episode on the “Complicated Women” podcast
Jace Stardiamond “always wants Reuben off doing other stuff”
Jace Stardiamond is the one who made Reuben insist that Frosty Fair had to be at the Thistlespring tree
Reuben just canceled his tour
After this episode, I'm really convinced that Jace (and maybe Porter) are using the Ratgrinders to bring back Ankarna rather than the Ratgrinders being the driving force themselves. Jace is so involved in Reuben's life that Rueben's agent is cc'ing him on emails about podcast appearances? Jace is the one who wanted Frosty Fair held at the Thistlespring tree? He's threatening Henry for trying to TALK about Reuben's education?
I don't think that the Ratgrinders are Jace's co-conspirators. I think that they're Jace's pawns.

To those having negative reaction with how the bad kids fought with the rat grinders, you need to look at it from their perspective too.
They don’t know how to deal with rage stars or those revived by one.
The first time they encountered it was at the Synod Mall. They didn’t win that fight. Those who were infected by the rage stars are probably dead as they float through the astral plane. They never had the chance to study how to work against it or resolve it.
As far as the Bad Kids can see, the Rat grinders and their mentors (?) have an intent to kill.
They know KLCK is hateful (?) towards Riz and the group. It later devolved into plotting to kill them, with the instruction and help of porter and jace. The rage stars enhanced the anger within their group, did it not? If you were one of TBK, how would you react if you were sent to take an exam meant to kill all of you then later find out the cleric in charge of you was not only murdered but also robbed of the gems needed to revive you? Not to mention the attempted murder on the proctor to make sure you fail. If that wasn’t enough, your house is being lifted into the sky and dragons are attacking your group and threatening to burn said house down. Would you not be vengeful or angry? These are teens just trying to prevent another world ending event to happen and somehow their direct threats are teens as well. It will always be messy.
Time isn’t on the side of TBK. Narrative is cruel to the rat grinders.
They survived the dragon ambush only to arrive in an almost destroyed Elmville. All their loved ones and citizens in danger. Rage infected individuals wreaking havoc on the different parts of town. This isn’t their first rodeo so they know what to do: cut it at the source. So they went to the gym, guns and spells ready. They know the head is Porter. They try to get to him but the rat grinders are there too. For us viewers, they are pawns by the adults who used them. For TBK, they are threats too. They don’t have the knowledge to save them nor the time to experiment ways to save them NOW. Don’t pay them attention and they might kill them too. So they had to choose: be merciful to the kids who are ready to take them down or save the town with literally everyone.
I think you know what TBK would choose.
The wellbeing of any Augefort student should never rests on TBK’s shoulders.
THEY ARE TEENS. Powerful, yes but still TEENS. They are students. Even Mazey, who is the acting principal, should never be responsible for what is happening. The blame is on Porter and Jace for cultivating hate in their students, then advocating rage for their selfish endeavors. The blame is on Augefort for, honestly, everything.
Maybe the rat grinders will get revived. Maybe they get another chance at being adventurers and teens. But don’t blame TBK for trying to deal with the cards dealt to them the way they know how. They’re good at saving the world. They’re good at killing their enemies and reviving them after to give them a second chance. So let them.

this is going to probably be the longest post of my life, and i HATE getting into fandom discourse which is why i don't usually write anything about fandom discourse, but i just want to address some things about our favorite rat grinders so if you want to read, click below
as someone who loves the rat grinders as nuanced antagonists who are also teenagers, i think the rat grinders before they ever joined in on porter and jace's plan were assholes.
i think they were the quiet bullies, the mean people who you never notice until they are mean to you, the ones who seem nice and respectable up close, but talk shit about you the minute you're gone.
i think most of them (kipperlilly in particular) were looking for a reason to be bad. and i know we might not ever get this confirmation, but based off kipperlilly's file and other moments with the trg, i think it's possible this is correct.
they were assholes who needed a reason to be even bigger, more dangerous assholes and most of them took it. and yes, it was either that or be dead, but i want you to know that sometimes that's not even a question. sometimes you don't even care about the other option, you just want to rage.
i think the one time all of them or maybe some of them even thought that what they were doing could be was when lucy died. and that's when i feel bad for them. they had to lock in right there because they all had made a decision, and they all needed to continue it. that's the manipulation.
i know they are kids. they are just teenagers. i work with teens, and guys, let me tell you, some teenagers are assholes. and i don't mean say a funny mean joke asshole, i mean literally going to grow up and be a shitty person asshole. i think some of the rat grinders were those kind of teens.
did they deserve to be redeemed? i think some of them do. i think buddy has a big shot at being redeemed, and i genuinely hated that he died in the last stand and had to make that decision. i think ally is going to try if they can. i think mary ann might be redeemed.
but also, you guys have to remember that this is dnd. i don't think many of you have played dnd before, or if you have you're just really conscientious about everything you do. because as a dm who has played dnd and has made nuanced antagonists, your players are gonna straight up kill them.
brennan knows that. i'm 100% sure he knows that. this isn't scripted. the intrepid heroes aren't thinking about what the fans want every time they play. in dnd, ESPECIALLY in brennan's dnd, it's kill or be killed.
the rat grinder's weren't going to use non-lethal attacks. they were going to kill the bad kids, and they were going to be UNNATURALLY happy throughout it all. they were going to spit in their faces and roast marshmallows on their bodies. they were going to not feel guilty.
sound familiar?
i think the bad kids have been nice to the rat grinders since day one. not kind, nice. they've been polite and nice to them, not going all in until this fight. if this fight happened before the finale, i think the rat grinders would have had more time to be redeemed (ex. see Ragh in season 1 who def would have died in the finale battle if the bad kids hadn't fought him earlier). but the bad kids are stressed and done.
there is no time to be polite and nice when the world is going to end.
i know you liked these characters. i did too. i'm sad to see them go, but even when someone is nuanced and could be redeemed, the person they were a piece of shit to doesn't have to be the one to redeem them. they don't have to be the one to keep them alive and make sure they only get taken the police instead of dead. cause trg would have gone to jail.
aelwyn did. so would they.
people you've wronged don't owe you forgiveness or redemption. trg didn't wrong tbk that bad, but they made them angry, they tried to kill them, and they're probably almost close to ending the world.
i'll miss you rat grinders. you guys were perfect narrative foils, but it was always going to end like this.
now stop being absolute assholes to the intrepid heroes just cause they didn't play how you wanted.
love this fandom, and yeah, d20 get shit wrong sometimes. always make sure to critique your favorite piece of media.
but at the end of the day, this isn't your table to play dnd at. this is theirs and they are having fun. why don't you go and play as the rat grinders in your home game and give them the ending they deserve, or make fanfiction about it?
put your anger into that.

Adaine's Furious Fists part 1
Or
Porter takes Adaine under his wing au Day 1
Just a quick story/summary of how things would go if Porter took Adaine under his wing throughout the series. I made a post about how she is the perfect candidate for him with her anger throughout the series and this happened on a whim. Adaine and Porter actually could have had a really interesting story given how their lives actually intertwine a lot if you think about it. So Regardless, read this if you want, I just thought it might be a fun idea.
First day of freshman year porter is scoping out potential prospects in the courtyard not coming up with much.
Puts a maybe down for fabian, he seems more like a grandstander, but he did punch a kid bigger than him without provocation. Still more ropey than strong, but there are dexy barbarians. Gorgug is a likely candidate, he seems soft, but was able to go into a rage and pummel his attacker, Porter could work with that if he had to. But the metal flower and the singing ticks Porter off. Riz is a low maybe to a no, kids being bullied on the first day are usually a good source of rage, but the goblin kid just seems to take it. Fig he doesn't have a chance to see since she sneaks into the teacher's lounge so early. Kirsten is a hard no, religious trauma can bring out a lot of sweet rage, but with Daybreak breathing down her neck it would be hard to get close to her without alerting suspicion. Adaine is a hard no. A tiny trembling high elf wizard with a huge orb she could barely carry, wearing the uniform of the prissy magic school? No way, no how, Porter doesn't even bother to learn her name.
Later that day he sees Adaine have a panic attack over being given detention and he writes her off even harder because it's pathetic. But seeing Fig stand up for her, she's not the ideal barbarian, but she is a young tiefling girl full of rage and Porter see's his opportunity.
Even later he's called to the cafeteria and sees Doreen, Arthur, and Mr. Gibbons dead with corn everywhere. Goldenhorde explains vaguely what happened and tells them to watch. It would be a horrific scene for a bunch of freshman, but Porter has seen and done worse. Still, he doesn't want to talk to Jace right now. The guy is powerful, but too much of a talker for Porter's liking. He knows some of the kids died and were brought back, that's why Arthur and Mr. Gibbons are dead, but little else. He does notice that Doreen's skull is caved in. He thinks of what little he knows about the kids, of the maybes, only fig has a weapon that deals bludgeoning damage so he assumes it was her and now intends to take her under his wing now that she got her first kill.
Once the cops come, he and Jace leave, Porter goes to observe the kids. They all seems broken and beaten, and about to be sick, not surprising. Porter doesn't have any sympathy for them, but he does understand so it's not enough to write any of them off. They're clean enough but the blood on your hands doesn't wash out as easily.
Porter is intent on Fig, because he thinks she's the one who killed Doreen. When Sandra Lynn comes to pick her up he notices that she's an elf, and Fig was dropped off at school by a different elf, yet their daughter's a tiefling. That might explain why she's so angry the first day since she seems like a newly presenting tiefling. Trouble at home can be juicy, especially when fell blood is involved.
Last to leave is the pathetic little high elf girl, you could use her spine like a meter stick with how straight the girl is standing. Porter can understand being sick or scared after your first battle, but he feels like he's within his rights to mock this little elf girl when no one else is around. He has enough of stuck up high elves to deal with as it is, it's good to see them scared.
But speak of the devil, Arianwen fucking Abernant shows up to pick her daughter up and clearly doesn't want to be seen at Aguefort of all places. Porter knows Arianwen and hates her, she's another teacher and their town only has two so they're bound to run into each other from time to time. They're also technically allies through the Shadowcat, who Arianwen is the main liaison. They don't work together exactly, but there's no reason they all can't exchange favors when working on their own evil plans. Arianwen is a cold, stuck up bitch, but she's a powerful stuck up bitch.
The fact that she's hear means the little elf girl is her daughter, now Porter actually feels a bit sorry for the child. It's one thing to be scared after your first battle when you watched people, including your..., 'friends,' might be to early for that since it's the first day, but people your own age die. It's another to be forced to deal with Arianwen afterwards. Porter still finds it pathetic, but is more lenient since he knows what Arianwen is like, especially if the girl is here instead of at the magic school her mother teaches at. that explains the uniform at least.
Then something happens he's too far away to hear, but Arianwen says something to her, likely to berate her. Porter expects the little elf girl to flinch and cower, but to his surprise, she snaps back at her mother despite her fear. It's not much, but despite how afraid she looked only moments ago Porter can see the fury in her eyes when she snaps back at her mother and it's something that Porter wants to see more of.
Later on Goldenhorde/Kalvaxus is given the faculty the full rundown of what happened. Porter knows more than most of his fellow teachers, but when Kalvaxus mentions Doreen being killed he talks about how she was bludgeoned to death by her own ladle. Not Fig's bass like Porter assumed. One of the other members of the faculty, one of the casters that Porter didn't bother to learn the name of, asks which of the kids did it.
Goldenhorde says it was Adaine, for a moment Porter almost asks 'who the fuck is that' out loud. Since he didn't really learn the names of most of them yet. But Tiberia Runestaff, another frigid wizard bitch, chimes in as always 'Adaine Abernant beat Doreen to death with her own ladle? The girl is ten pounds soaking wet and a wizard, why did she use a ladle" clearly angry that one of her wizards would pop their kill cherry with a martial weapon instead of her arcane abilities, but Porter doesn't care.
Learning that Arianwen's daughter was the one who murdered Doreen, and with a ladle is interesting. And moves Adaine from a hard no to a solid maybe in his rage book.
