my most normie opinion ever is that i thought it was kind of funny. the design is so weird in like a humorous way, and i think their deadpan delivery was silly ("do you not hear the symphony of atoms dying in space?"). i mean its definitely a wackier approach but i didnt hate it

I think its so telling that the scariest thing in Signalis (to me at least) wasn't the cosmic horror, but the fucking dread of living in an uncaring system

Meat monsters. A god that will devour all life. Entropy. A corruptive force that will devour and eat away at us physically and emotionally.

And the part that pulled me the most was knowing that Ariane and Elster got sent out on a mission they were almost certain to fail, because a dying empire demands some form of glory and subjugation.

You can kill the corrupted replikas. You can avoid them and still finish your objective. But in the end, you and one person you live are still going to die a pointless, painful death. She's going to suffer, and you're going to have to take her last breath for her, and you're going to have to die knowing that there was nothing to be done.

This whole thing was just a system demanding blood.

The horror was just there to drink it.

i'm conditioned in such a way that it basically breaks down to

1) in intellectual pursuits, you're somehow in the wrong if you have to try. but you better try. and if you succeed you still failed because you had to try but at least you did it.

2) for everything else, if you have to try you have no business doing it at all

and a partial workaround for this has been to intellectualize other types of pursuits and, therefore, justify expending effort

but that is kind of a stupid and low quality solution that also falls short once you hit the kinds of things you can't intellectualize

and the fallback for those can be to moralize, effort is okay if you create a sense of obligation

but what about things that you just.....dare I say....want?
