#I have known him for a little bit more than a week but please know i love him very very much #I may call him mr cringefail loser wet napkin of a man but truly and honestly I love him very much #he's been through so much more than any one person should every have to go through and he is through and through a very gentle soul #he also very badly needs a hug and to be told that everything is gonna be okay #he's honestly what's been helping me get through the day because I'm going to be 100% honest #I have been so incredibly burned out with no time to rest and a lot of the things I enjoy were starting to feel dull cause of the burnout #but starting trigun and seeing this funny not so lil guy kinda brought a spark back to things? #tbh i think i just needed something new to get into #but still he makes me feel so many butterflies and brings new feeling of excitement to life because holy shit i have something new #and it's something that checks all the boxes for me #I very rarely will watch things on my own and I have been watching with friends #but I find myself going back to episodes that we've seen already and rewatching them because of how much I enjoy them #and the manga has been SUCH a fun read so far #and I'm ngl I haven't read a manga on my own without being prompted to in YEARS #so it... admittedly feels very nice #I feel like I'm 20 again and playing EO2U on my own and just enjoying myself #and 2020/2021 was a very low point for me that EO2U helped me cope with specifically #and not to say I'm as low as I was then and that I'm at a low now but I do feel super burnt out and having something that I enjoy #and don't feel bogged down while doing it? feels super nice #dhgfsd don't get me wrong I love all my other interests very very much #but imma be real with y'all whenever I go heavy into resident evil posting that's when I'm at my most mentally ill/lowest #and that's when I go and sit down and play that fdhjskgbfs(unless I'm asked to by a friend or once in a blue moon I just really wanna play) #which recently has been I want to play for enjoyment thank goodness #fbdhjsfvbsdjhi anyway vash the stampede my beloved thank you for bringing a new spark to life and help make things less dull for me <3 #sweet little bumblebee

It’s all so arbitrary.

The songs and dances we must do to survive.

The contracts we must sign in order to be considered capable and living.

Only to know you’re like a potted plant,

Stuck in the same old soil,

Roots that can’t grow from those tiny confide,

Reliant on someone to occasionally give you water,

To remember what you’re living for—

But most of the time it’s dry and cheap dirt,

Never stirred or given a new—

Just compliantly waiting for the validation of someone.

Maybe they’ll appreciate me.

And when you get down to it,

There should be more to life than slaving away at dead end nothings,

Preening for the praise of others,

To make an income others will envy,

To wait so expectedly during asinine interviews,

To be asked, “What super power would you choice and why?”

When that question is so inconsequential to the job at hand,

But always remember the answer:

“Teleportation; so I can get away from here.”

A light hearted chuckle should be received and like wise envy for interviewers who hadn’t thought of that answer themselves.

You’ll smile.

You’ll preen.

You’ll be exactly what they need, because they do hold the water.

They have the money after all.

But in the end, you’ll have to stop and wonder:

What was any of it worth?

What’s the price of your self-conscious?

The state of Utah in the United States has no citizenship requirements for marriage licenses, and Utah County is the only place there that allows international couples to register their marriages online. Since the county rolled out virtual weddings during the Covid-19 pandemic, it became a wedding haven for same-sex couples who are not able to officially marry in their own countries.

As sexual minorities in China face suppression at home, Utah County is allowing them to officially marry and celebrate their love — all for around $100. Although the marriages aren’t recognized in China, some 200 same-sex couples from mainland China and Hong Kong have gotten married via the county’s digital marriage license system since 2021.

For authorities in Utah County, the influx of international couples came as a surprise. The Utah County and Auditor’s Office moved its marriage licensing service online, as part of a digitization initiative in 2019. At the start of the pandemic, a number of couples requested Zoom ceremonies, and the county made those available as well.

The service first attracted couples in Utah, followed by people from across the U.S., and later, from all over the world. From May 1 to September 20 this year, at least 77 same-sex couples with mainland Chinese addresses have been married there, said county deputy clerk Russ Rampton, who oversees marriage licensing, to Rest of World.

Although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Hong Kong, under a different set of laws to mainland China, residents who get married in other places are able to apply for dependent visas in the city for their partners. Married gay people are also able to mark themselves as married in tax filings.

In his vow, however, [one marriage certificate applicant] Zhu said he was looking forward to getting married a second time — in China. “If one day our country allows this, I hope we could get married again in this country,” Zhu said to his husband before they kissed.

For years, the people of the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation watched over their waters and waited. They had spent nearly two decades working with Canada’s federal government to negotiate protections for Kitasu Bay, an area off the coast of British Columbia that was vulnerable to overfishing.

But the discussions never seemed to go anywhere. First, they broke down over pushback from the fishing industry, then over a planned oil tanker route directly through Kitasoo/Xai’xais waters.

“We were getting really frustrated with the federal government. They kept jumping onboard and then pulling out,” says Douglas Neasloss, the chief councillor and resource stewardship director of the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation. “Meanwhile, we’d been involved in marine planning for 20 years – and we still had no protected areas.”

Instead, the nation watched as commercial overfishing decimated the fish populations its people had relied on for thousands of years.

Nestled on the west coast of Swindle Island, approximately 500km north of Vancouver, Kitasu Bay is home to a rich array of marine life: urchins and abalone populate the intertidal pools, salmon swim in the streams and halibut take shelter in the deep waters. In March, herring return to spawn in the eelgrass meadows and kelp forests, nourishing humpback whales, eagles, wolves and bears.

“Kitasu Bay is the most important area for the community – that’s where we get all of our food,” Neasloss says. “It’s one of the last areas where you still get a decent spawn of herring.”

So in December 2021, when the Department of Fisheries and Oceans withdrew from discussions once again, the nation decided to act. “My community basically said, ‘We’re tired of waiting. Let’s take it upon ourselves to do something about it,’” Neasloss says.

What they did was unilaterally declare the creation of a new marine protected area (MPA). In June 2022, the nation set aside 33.5 sq km near Laredo Sound as the new Gitdisdzu Lugyeks (Kitasu Bay) MPA – closing the waters of the bay to commercial and sport fishing.

It is a largely unprecedented move. While other marine protected areas in Canada fall under the protection of the federal government through the Oceans Act, Kitasu Bay is the first to be declared under Indigenous law, under the jurisdiction and authority of the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation.

Although they did not wait for government approval, the Kitasoo did consult extensively: the declaration was accompanied by a draft management plan, finalised in October after three months of consultation with industry and community stakeholders. But the government did not provide feedback during that period, according to Neasloss, beyond an acknowledgment that it had received the plan...

Approximately 95% of British Columbia is unceded: most First Nations in the province of British Columbia never signed treaties giving up ownership of their lands and waters to the crown. This puts them in a unique position to assert their rights and title, according to Neasloss, who hopes other First Nations will be inspired to take a similarly proactive approach to conservation...

Collaboration remains the goal, and Neasloss points to a landmark agreement between the Haida nation and the government in 1988 to partner in conserving the Gwaii Haanas archipelago, despite both parties asserting their sovereignty over it. A similar deal was made in 2010 for the region’s 3,400 sq km Gwaii Haanas national marine conservation area.

“They found a way to work together, which is pretty exciting,” says Neasloss. “And I think there may be more Indigenous protected areas that are overlaid with something else.”

1. No cases of cancer caused by HPV in Norwegian 25-year olds, the first cohort to be mass vaccinated for HPV

Last year there were zero cases of cervical cancer in the population that was vaccinated in 2009 against the HPV virus, which can cause the cancer in women. The HPV virus is extremely common, basically everyone comes into contact with one version or another of the virus in their lifetime.

The vaccine was given to girls only out of an abundance of caution, they were the most likely to contract cancer from the viruses, and because there was limited supply.

2. ‘Every square inch is covered in life’: the ageing oil rigs that became marine oases

Built decades ago, California’s offshore oil platforms are home to a huge diversity of marine life. According to a 2014 study, the rigs were some of the most “productive” ocean habitats in the world, a term that refers to biomass – or number of fish and other creatures and how much space they take up – per unit area.

3. Vaccinations may have prevented almost 20 million COVID-19 deaths worldwide

Vaccinations estimated to have averted 19.8 million COVID-19 deaths worldwide in their first year, according to the latest Imperial modelling study.

What value would American workers place on the privilege to work from home?

In a 2022 survey by FlexJobs, 45% of remote workers reported saving at least $5,000 a year. One in 5 reported saving $10,000 a year. The savings average out to about $6,000 a year. The poll reached 4,000 workers in July and August of last year.

Three years into the remote-work revolution, research increasingly suggests that telework is a commodity, a job descriptor worth thousands of dollars in potential savings and improved quality of life.
