Sometimes I wonder how it would have gone if Goose had the occasion of meeting Hondo. Maverick would have probably died of embarrassment but he would have been so happy

GEMS MY FRIEND SAID WATCHING 'TOP GUN: MAVERICK' FOR THE FIRST TIME:
"The jacket! The famous jacket that pulls women, pulls men, pulls the world!"
"Oh look how hot~ he looks on that motorcicle. He's even pracing his ass!"
(Maverick, on screen: "Well... He's not here yet.") The mans madness has begun."
"MAVERICK DON'T DIE YOU STILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR GAY ROMANCE!"
"He lasted two months at Top Gun? HA. He probably was a bigger piece of work than the students."
"From what I can tell, Maverick tamed Iceman. In the first one he was the little annoying bitch and Maverick saw a challenge."
"I mean, at least these two (Penny and Mav) have chemistry. They hooked up in a plane, after all."
"Iceman solves his problems, Iceman keeps his job, what a simp. That's dog behavior."
"Maverick doesn't look likes he's flirting with her, he's just confused. His confused face looks like his flirting face, and people assume. I know this because people do it to me."
"Yeah, he's kinda like that one Olívia Rodrigo song that she gets confused when she sees her ex... What was it again?" ('bad Idea right?' by Olivia Rodrigo)
"I like him (Bob)! He's pathetic like me!"
"Oooohhh they're (Phoenix and Bob) gonna be besties! I can feel it."
(When Phoenix racks Rooster with the cue) "OHOHOHOOOO I LIKE HER ALREADY."
(Didn't notice Hangman taking Bob's cue, I relayed the information) "Aaaahhh don't steal Bob's cue. Bob's cool, Bob's nice."
(After rewinding the scene) "NO, NO, NO! WHO IS THAT? NOBODY CAN STEAL BOB'S CUE! I don't like him (Hangman)."
(Hangman, on screen: Bradshaw! As I live and breathe!) *Slowly turns towards me with dead eyes*
"That's not enemies to lovers, that's just enemies."
"With just this scene, I can tell this guy (Hangman) comes and goes. 'Sometimes I flirt with you, sometimes I hate you.' He's like a tsudere."
"Oh, got it. Phoenix is adopted into the man's group. She's a bro."
"I wouldn't say that they're his support system, but those two are the people that know him the best. Hangman is paying attention because he wants to be the best and needs to defeat Rooster. Phoenix is demonstrating a more sibling like worry."
"Hondo is like Mavericks babysitter."
"Oh. Oh, now Mav's flirting with her."
(Following the 'Baby on Board' comment) "Don't talk shit about Bob! I don't like Hangman."
"Maverick is like a step father to Rooster. Not in the 'HAHA I FUCKED YOUR MOM' kind of way, but in the way that he helped raise him."
"Where is Iceman? I'm here for the two of them, I don't give a fuck about Aeronautics."
"I think Ice and Maverick had a long relationship, but they're not together anymore. They maintained a friendship, but their lives probably went in different directions. I'd say they were together for 10, maybe 20 years."
('I ain't worried' by OneRepublic starts playing) "This song is from 2022? OH MY GOD THE SCENE"
"DON'T PLAY AROUND WITH GRANDPA!"
*Started chanting "BOB! BOB! BOB!" When he got picked up*
*Eeriely quiet during the bird strike, until Maverick starts talking to Rooster* "OH THEY'RE NOT DEAD. THEY COULDN'T HAVE KILLED BOB! IF THEY KILLED BOB I WOULD STOP AND NEVER WATCH TOP GUN EVER AGAIN!"
"Definitely 20 years. Ice is probably the only person Mav actually loved. Like, not a fling?" "Yeah, probably." "He's been with lots of women, and men, but Iceman is the only person he was ever in love with– maybe still is."
"I think his (Ice's) wife knows. That's probably why she recognizes Mav and is kind of friends with him." "That's probably why she just let him go up to see Ice." "YEAH GO AHEAD, FUCK MY HUSBAND!"
"It's pretty easy to notice that Snowman– No, ICEman."
"That is the face of a man who just lost the love of his life."
"Damn, the mans a beast. If It was me I'd already have cried, alone, in a room absolutely destroyed, never to come out again."
"He's got nobody, dude! I just want his step child to come back, because If he doesn't that man's gonna kill himself!"
"Why does it always have to have a romantic ending. Just leave him with his adoptive son. Go away."
"They (Penny and Mav) aren't going to end up together."
"I have a theory! Fanboy is obsessed with women! Cus he's 'Fanboy'." "But wouldn't he be called Simp, then?" "Ah, then he's obsessed with men." "... simp can be for men too."
"There's gonna be a Top Gun Three? Who's it gonna be about? It ain't gonna be Maverick, that man has a foot in the grave already."
"Bob is my favorite in the second movie. I have no favorites in the first one because everybody is very macho and very gay, and that's boring."

There was sun streaming in through the open screen door when you peeled your eyes open. The bed beside you was cold, long since empty after Jake got up this morning. You rolled over, holding the thin sheet against your bare chest as you sat up. A quick glance at the clock told you that it was just after seven. Yawning quietly, you smiled softly as your eyes landed on the folded note on your bedside table.
Morning sweets,
Just wanted to let you know that I love you so much. Hope you had a good sleep and I should be back before supper. Have a great day and make sure you call me if you need anything.
Love you, Jake.
At the bottom, there was a small heart drawn. You ran your finger over it gently, folding up the paper and setting it back on the nightstand. The two of you had spent a few hours talking once you got home. Sitting up in bed, wrapped up in each other's arms, the two of you reminisced about memories from the past. Jake held you as you recounted everything that had happened with Bradley, how you gave yourself to him and he stomped on your heart only a few hours later, and you held him as memories of his wingman's death flooded to the surface. It was a very emotional night.
Only a few hours later, Jake was pressing a kiss to your forehead and climbing out of bed. He got dressed quietly, stealing glances at your sleeping form every now and then. Twenty minutes he was slipping out of the house. What you didn’t know was that he returned a few minutes later to drop off a little gift.
You peeled the curtains open further, sunlight flooding into the cozy bedroom. Connecting your phone to the speaker, you waited patiently for it to beep before hitting shuffle on your playlist. You hummed along as Taylor Swift’s voice began floating through your bedroom. By the time the song was finished, you were fully dressed and taking the stairs two at a time, speaker playing loudly as you brought it downstairs.
Stopping in your tracks, your breath got caught in your throat at the sight of the bouquet of flowers sitting on your kitchen counter. Wrapped in thin tan paper, was a bouquet of baby’s breath flowers. Your heart melted at the sight. One night, nearly four years ago now, you had confessed to Jake about your interest in flowers. You told him all about how you would find out the meaning of certain flowers. Which ones represented love, and which represented friendship.
On your next date, he brought you a small bouquet of baby’s breath, the flowers sitting in front of you now. You were overcome with emotions the second that he handed them to you. Jake was the first person in years to care about you any more than was required by society. Sure, you had a few friends but ever since Bradley, you had never had someone love you the way he did. And as soon as he gave you the flowers, you knew he loved you even more. To pay attention to something that you had briefly mentioned, let alone flowers and their meanings. You wanted to cry at the sight of the delicate flowers.
Now, you stood in the kitchen of the housing that Jake had been assigned, staring at the flowers as you became overwhelmed with emotion. Your fingers brushed over the soft flowers carefully. After a few seconds of simply staring at the small white flowers, you moved further into the kitchen, pulling your water bottle from the fridge.

“Attention on deck!” The pilots stood rigid as Cyclone and Warlock stepped forward. The Air Boss stops beside Hondo as Warlock continues to the podium. Hangman’s eyes stayed locked in front of him, standing rigid as he waited for Warlock to speak.
The man looked down at the podium for a split second before raising his head. “Morning. Welcome to your special training detachment. Be seated,” The pilots sat down in unison at the instruction. “I’m Admiral Bates, NAWDC commander. You’re all Top Gun graduates. The elite. The best of the best,” Rooster had a small smile on his face. Two rows in front of him, Jake put a toothpick in his mouth, a cocky smirk on his face. “That was yesterday.”
The group of pilots each instantly became more somber. “The enemy’s new fifth-generation fighter has leveled the playing field. Details are few, but you can be sure we no longer possess the technological advantage,” Warlock’s eyes drifted over the pilots in front of him. “Success, now more than ever, comes down to the man or woman in the box.” With that, Jake turned his head, smirking at Phoenix. She turned briefly to meet his stare, looking away seconds later and flipping him off discreetly. A shit-eating grin grew on your boyfriend's face.
“Half of you will make the cut. One of you will be named mission leader. The other half will remain in reserve.” Jake turned, meeting Bradley’s stare with raised eyebrows. The mustached aviator only looked at the cocky pilot blankly.
Warlock continued as Maverick began walking toward them in the large hangar. “Your instructor is a Top Gun graduate with real-world experience in every mission aspect you will be expected to master,” Maverick’s footsteps echoed through the hangar as he grew closer to the group of pilots. “His exploits are legendary.” The pilots turned their heads to watch their new instructor walk down the aisle toward Warlock. When Jake tuners his head, expertly flipping the toothpick in his mouth, he wished that the ground would open up and swallow him whole. He brought a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose.
Given his luck, he wasn't surprised that their new instructor was the man that he threw out of the bar last night. While part of him was looking forward to kicking the man's ass for what he did to you, the other part knew that you wouldn't want him to do that. Maverick may have wanted nothing to do with you, but that didn’t mean you wished the man any harm.

The sun was beating down on the pilots as they walked down the tarmac toward their planes. Rooster was walking quickly toward his, trying his hardest to ignore the man calling his name behind him. “Bradley!” That was the second time Maverick had called him, trying his call sign seconds before. Rooster kept walking forward, face fixed into a hard stare.
Maverick sighed. “Lieutenant Bradshaw!” At the use of his formal title, Bradley stopped. He turned to face the older man, his face unreadable. The pilot tried to sound unbothered, but it was easy to hear the irritation that laced his words.
“Yes sir.” Shaking his head slightly, Maverick stopped when he got closer to the younger pilot.
Bradley stared down at him with a blank expression. “Let’s not do it like this.” While he knew that there was dirty laundry to air, but he also knew that this was nowhere near the right place to do that. The two of them would need to have a conversation eventually, one that Maverick was dreading and Bradley was planning on avoiding.
Clenching his jaw, Bradley looked down at his superior. “You gonna wash me out?” Even though Bradley refused to acknowledge it, there was a pained look on Maverick’s face as he shook his head. A part of Maverick was now wishing that it never would have come to this, that he and Bradley never would have drifted apart the way that they did.
The pilot couldn’t take back what he had done, nor did he want to. Even though Bradley stood across from him now, hating the older man with every fibre of his being, he would never take back what he did. His actions bought Bradley an extra four years to prepare for the career he was about to begin. After making a promise to his best friend's widow that he would keep her son safe, pulling his papers was the least he could do. What he could only wish was that Bradley would understand that he did it to protect him.
He looked back up at the younger pilot, instantly reminded of his best friend. “That’ll be up to you, not me.” Bradley nodded slowly. He swallowed sharply and tried to keep his expression stoic.
“Am I dismissed?”
From his plane, Jake could see the two having a tense conversation. While he knew what happened between you and Bradshaw, and what happened between you and Maverick, he had no idea what happened between the two of them. In that moment, he made it his mission to find out.
Tumblr media
“How was your day?” The question was out of your mouth before Jake had even closed the door. When you heard the rumble of his truck in the driveway, you headed toward the front door. Jake huffed and tossed his duffle bag onto the ground, practically collapsing into your arms once he was close enough.
He groaned into the soft skin of your neck. “It was the day from hell,” You chuckled quietly and rubbed your hand up and down his back. “Maverick is our instructor,” From that statement alone you could understand why his day was so terrible. Jake had always had trouble accepting the fact that Maverick had practically abandoned you because of Bradshaw’s actions. “One of the other guys made some bet so every time we lost we had to do 200 push up’s.”
You cooed softly. “Oh, my poor baby.” Jake laughed quietly and you grinned at the sound.
“Then Maverick, Bradshaw, and I went up and it was a whole cluster fuck,” That made you snort quietly. It didn’t surprise you that after nearly two decades, the egotistical men still couldn’t get over themselves enough to get the job done. “They did some cobra maneuver bullshit that nearly sent them into the ground.” If Jake felt you freeze, he didn’t say anything.
You may not be very happy with the men right now, but you didn’t want them to get themselves killed. You still cared about them. A glance at the clock told you that it was nearing 10:30 pm. “How about we head to bed, Sailor?” He nodded against your neck.
Silently, the two of you made your way toward your bedroom. Jake helped you strip out of your clothes, transfixed by the sight of your bare skin. He held you as you brushed your teeth, strong arms wound around your middle. You were slightly distracted by the soft kisses that Jake was peppering all across the side of your neck and up your jaw. Moaning softly, You smiled at the feeling and tilted your head to the side. “Let's go to bed, Jake.” You whispered.
Without complaint, Jake followed you to the bed. After a little bit of maneuvering, you and Jake were snuggled comfortably under the sheets. The pilot was curled into your chest as you played with his sandy blond hair. Within seconds, you could feel his breathing even out and hear the soft snores falling from his parted lips.
Just as you were about to drift off to sleep yourself, your phone lit up on the nightstand. A name that you hadn’t seen in a long time was staring back at you when you picked the phone up. Ice was asking if you wanted to get lunch. Why the man was up this late, you couldn’t say. But, instead of questioning the man, you simply agreed, promising to meet up with him tomorrow.
After hitting send and receiving Ice’s simple reply of a thumbs up, you set the phone down and let your eyes fall shut. It only took you a few minutes to drift off, images and flashes of years ago filling your mind as you slept. You had no idea what the next few days would hold.

i love men (and women) who fly planes. truly. i love them and their weird homoerotic friendships and their callsigns and their everything. i love fanboy and rooster and hangman and coyote and phoenix from tgm who initiated this obsession. but i also love the originals like goose, iceman, maverick, and slider. and i love my new guys like rosie, buck, bucky, curt and cros. i love learning about planes. shout out to my favorite two ground crew guys: lemmons and hondo
moral of the story is that i’m autistic. and maybe unhinged.

1st Chapter
You woke up feeling not very well rested, which immediately put you into a bad mood. It was one of the few nights you could sleep in your comfy bed, and you didn’t enjoy it. You did your hygiene routine and made your way out of the apartment. You must have looked funny, you had a backpack on and two big military bags, each of them on one of your shoulders. After a few minutes of walking, you made it to the train station, you bought a ticket to San Diego and went on your way. After almost three hours, you were in San Diego. There you caught a bus that would take you the closest to Miramar. That took another hour or so. In the bus, you started hating yourself for not buying a lunch to go. Then it was about 40 minutes of walking to the base. When you finally arrived at the reception, they took all of your documents, gave you a special tag and a card and let you go inside. You were given instructions of where to go and to whom you should report yourself.
You made your way through the huge building and finally found an office where was written Adm. Simpson, Adm. Bates. You took a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Come in!” someone shouted from inside the office. You took another deep breath and opened the door. You stood just behind the door in an attention position. “Lt. Y/N Y/LN sir. I’m here because of the special mission.” you said clearly and hoped that you did everything right. “Of course, please take a seat Lt.” said one of them, and you immediately put the bags and backpack down and sat on the chair in front of their table. “You are here just in time, we had to move things forward a little, so tomorrow you are starting a course for this mission. You’ve been called here for a special secret mission, Lt. You were called here on a special request of Admiral Kazansky. As we already said, you are starting tomorrow, you will be living in one of the off-base houses, because we don’t have any room available on base. Someone will take you there after we finish here. Your clothes and helmet will be ready for tomorrow, please come here in your normal civil clothes, and you will be given your flight suit before the flying lesson, we had some malfunctions so you will have to sit through a theoretical lesson in your everyday clothes. That’s all for now, we will see you tomorrow. You are dismissed.” said almost in one breath Admiral Simpson, which you found out, during his monologue, was called Cyclone, the other one, Admiral Bates had a patch with Warlock written on it, that must be the man you spoke to over the phone. “Thank you, sir.” You said and slowly rose to your feet.
“Hondo will take you to your house, he should be waiting outside this room as we speak.” smiled slightly Warlock as you nodded at him. Then you took your bags off the floor and made your way out of the room. There really was a man standing, looking like he was waiting for someone. “Excuse me sir.” you started, not knowing his ranks or name, apart from his call sign. He immediately snapped his head in your direction and kindly smiled. “Finally, someone who can smile normally and doesn’t look like he is going to kill me any moment.” you thought to yourself. “You must be Moonfoot right? Or should I call you Lt. Y/LN?” he asked as he came closer to you. You returned his smile. “Moonfoot is okay, sir.” he suddenly shook his head slightly. “Oh, please don’t call me sir, just call me Hondo, that’s a whole lot better, and now let’s go, I’m sorry, but I don’t have much time, I arrived not so long ago as well and need to find my housing too.” he smiled and motioned to you to follow him outside. “You have your own car?” he suddenly asked. “No, I don’t. I just came home from a deployment, so having a car wasn’t on my agenda yet.” you answered honestly. “Well, that might be a bit of a problem, though, since you won’t be living on base.” he said. “I will make it work, at least I hope so…if it’s not going to be too far, I will just walk.” you said, as you came outside through a different door then you entered before. “Don’t worry, we will think of something, now come on, this is my car, let’s go.” he pointed at his car, which was a normal jeep. He drove for about 20 minutes when you arrived in a small neighborhood. It was looking kinda nice, all of the houses looked the same and weren’t very big, but it would be just enough. You could see the ocean in the distance, which was nice as well.
“There is mainly families of the soldiers or staff from the base living, I think that some of your fellow pilots might live somewhere here, that would be good for you, because you could always catch a ride with someone.” he said as he slowly stopped his car. “We are here, now just a good advice, if you like and don’t mind walking, when you walk down this hill and then about 20 minutes left on the beach you will arrive at the Hard Deck. That’s a bar, and basically everyone from the base will be there at some point. Some of your colleagues might be there today as well, so if you want to make friends, that’s yours go to place.” he said and helped you with your bags. He then put a set of keys from his pocket and opened the front door. “It’s not much, you have a living room, kitchen, and a bathroom on this floor and then upstairs one bathroom and two rooms. I’m really sorry, but I have to go now. Good luck tomorrow.” he then said, and before you could have thanked him or say anything in return, he was out and driving his car away.
“That went rather well.” you said to yourself as you made your way up the stairs to your room. It was cozy, there weren´t many things, the walls were plain, and you were thinking of keeping it that way. At least for now, since you didn’t even know for how long you will live here. The room was simple, a bed, table, and a wardrobe. You didn’t really need anything else since you will be coming here probably only to sleep. When you put your bags away, you went back downstairs to the kitchen. It was fully equipped, but there wasn’t any food. You weren’t really in a mood for shopping, so you thought that you will just order something when a call interrupted you. You sighed when it was another unknown number. Your anxiety was really playing games with you those past few days. You took a deep breath and answered it. You were now smarter than yesterday, so you answered more professionally.
“Lt. Y/LN speaking, how can I help you.” you said and waited for someone to speak. “Lt. Y/Ln is nice to hear you, this is Admiral Kazansky.” came an automatic voice, like from a computer, from the phone. You were in shock, the one man who requested you on this mission was calling you now. “What the hell is going on.” you thought to yourself. “How can I help you, sir?” you asked, hoping you didn’t disrespect him or something. “I would like to meet you in person before your mission starts tomorrow, could you make your way over to an address if I send you one?” he asked, and you were in shock once again. “O-Of course, sir, that wouldn’t be a problem.” you answered. “Okay, that’s great, I will send you the address and I hope that you will be able to make it to 3PM.” he said. “I will do my best, sir.” you honestly answered. “Well, that would be all for now, Lt., I will see you later today. Goodbye for now.” he fared welled. “Of course, sir, goodbye” you returned the farewell and put your phone down.
“What the fuck is going on.” you asked yourself and then smiled. Admiral Kazansky, someone you knew only from stories and basically legends, wanted to see you. You couldn’t even believe it. Then came a notification from your phone. You picked it up again and there was the address he was talking about. You immediately put it into your maps and found out that it’s about 30 minutes’ walk. Since it was already 2PM you decided to change your clothes and then slowly start walking towards the address. When it was about 2:45PM you were already there. You didn’t want to seem too eager or something, so you just waited for about 10 minutes, when suddenly the doors to the house opened.
“Oh, you must be Y/N right? Tom said that you were coming over this afternoon. Why are you waiting here, honey? You could have just knocked and entered. Come on, let’s go inside.” said a woman that opened the door. “Oh, I’m sorry, my name is Sarah, I’m Tom’s wife.” she suddenly said, probably seeing your confused face. “It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Kazansky.” you said and offered her your hand. “Oh no, no, please don’t call me Mrs. Kazansky, it makes me feel old. Call me Sarah, okay?” she immediately said and instead of a handshake brought you into a hug. It was a nice feeling, you weren’t hugged in a really long time, but you slowly pulled out. “Well, Tom is waiting in the living room, so you can go there. Would you like something to drink? Maybe a tea or coffee?” She asked when she pointed at the direction of the living room. “Um, if you have a ginger tea or peppermint that would be amazing, but I really don’t want to cause any problems Mrs. Oh I mean Sarah.” You spoke. “That’s a nonsense, I will prepare you peppermint and ginger tea, okay? I will bring it to you with Tom’s tea as well.” She smiled again and disappeared into, what you assumed, was the kitchen.
You looked around for a bit. There were a lot of frames with pictures of children, Admiral Kazansky and also Sarah. There were a few with other naval aviators as well. You didn’t want to look around for too long, so you quietly made your way to where you assume would be the living room. When you reached the room, you knocked on the door frame, because the doors were opened. You then heard a hum of acknowledgement and slowly went inside.
“Admiral, sir, you wanted to see me. I’m Lt. Y/LN.” you said in a straight voice but with a bit of a smile. The man who was sitting there looked friendly. He just smiled at you and motioned to the seat across from him on the sofa. You quickly made your way over there and sat down. “Please let’s cut the formalities, I’m Iceman, or Tom, whatever you prefer. And you must be Y/N right?” you heard coming from somewhere in the room. You must have had a confused face because suddenly you heard another sentence. “Oh, don’t worry, it’s just my computer system, talking hurts these days, so I will use this form of communication.” it said, and you just smiled at him.
“Okay, that’s alright, whatever is best for you and yes, I’m Y/N” you added. “Wonderful, you are probably wondering why you are here, right?” he asked. “Well to be honest, I’m a little curious yes.” you said and chuckled. He laughed a bit as well. "Ask away then...I guess you have a lot of questions about why you are here and so on." the AI´s voice beckoned you. "Alright, well, why me? I mean Admiral Sympson told me that I´m here only because of you, they wouldn´t even think of me, but for some reason you did. And if I´m right, that might not be that case, but still, all of the others will be probably more experienced and graduates from Top Gun, right?" you said in one breath and made an eye contact with him.
He sighed a bit and began writing on his computer. After a little while, the voice started talking again. "Yes, you are here because I requested you. Why did I request you? Because I think and believe that you are an exceptional pilot and WSO. There isn´t many people who managed to be a WSO and a pilot. You are the only one in California right now." the voice ended, and you smiled a bit. When you looked over at Iceman, he was smiling as well.
"Okay, thank you, but I still don´t understand this. The others, they are Top Gun graduates, right? I didn´t even get an invitation." you pondered. "That is true. But you didn´t receive an invitation to Top Gun because you made the decision to rather pursuit a pilot degree. And now I´m asking you, would you rather go to Top Gun as WSO and never become a fighter pilot, or never went into Top Gun, but become a fighter pilot hm?" the voice said again before you even realized that Iceman had been typing on his computer again.
"I guess I would still choose the fighter pilot degree." you smiled. "That´s what I thought, and please don´t forget that you have one confirmed air kill, not many people in your age group have that." he added. "That´s true yeah, but it was only because the other guy..." you wanted to continue but the AI´s voice cut you right off. "No, you made the shot because you are an amazing pilot and WSO, and that´s the reason why you are here. You are exceptional pilot and even better WSO. I honestly think that you will be an amazing addition to the team we came up with."
Suddenly there was another knock on the door frame. Both, you and Iceman snapped your heads in that direction. There stood Sarah with a tray on which there were two mugs with a hot tea. "I´m sorry to interrupt you, but I have the teas ready." Sarah kindly smiled and made her way over to you. "There you go sweetie." she said and gave one of the mugs to your side of the coffee table. "Thank you very much." you said and took a sip of the ginger tea. "Honey, here´s your tea." she told her husband and both of them smiled at each other. You just looked at them. It was very clear that they were so in love with each other, and you could just hope that some time you will find someone who will love you as much as Iceman loved his wife.
"Sweetie? Will you join us for a late lunch? We didn´t have a chance of eating yet, because we had someone over before you. I´m making beef steaks and potatoes." she asked you while collecting an old mug from the table. You nervously looked at him and then back at Sarah. "I don´t know, I really don´t want to be a bother and overstay my welcome." you said after a minute. "Nonsense, you wouldn´t be overstaying anything. Besides, you probably didn´t have a chance of eating today, right? From what I´ve heard, you came today from LA and just moved to the off-base house and there isn´t anything to eat for sure." came again the AI´s voice from somewhere. "Look, we won´t force you, of course, but it would be nice if you stayed. The kids are still at their after-school clubs, so it will be just us." continued Sarah. "Well, if it´s really okay, then I guess a homemade meal would serve me good." You said, and that made Sarah and Iceman chuckle. "Okay, that´s what I like to hear. It should be ready in a minute. So, if you could make your way to the dining room." she proceeded to say and left the living room. When she was out of the room, Iceman continued through his computer.
"I just wanted to say. Look, I don´t want this to sound weird or be uncomfortable for you, but it came to my attention that you don´t have any friends or family here in the States with you. Is that correct?" he bluntly asked, which shocked you. "I mean yes, that is true, yeah." You said after the shock disappeared a bit. "I can´t tell you much, but this mission will be a lot harder than any of those you had to do before. I´m more than convinced that you will be able to do it, either as a pilot or as a WSO, I don´t see a reason why you should fail. It will be hard for you though because you will have to fly twice as much as the others. One exercise as a pilot and also as a WSO, which in the long run will put you in a position where it would become an advantage. But you can´t be alone for this. I know that after what happened to you in Mali, it might be hard to trust other people, but sometimes you just need to try it. Your instructor is one of the closest people of mine. Don´t hesitate to ask him anything, he is there to teach you, he is there for you. Sometimes he can be a little cocky and rough, but it´s all in the best way. He wants you to be able to complete the mission and come back home. Those people, who were selected alongside you, were always told that they are the best of the best, some of them are cocky bastards, but that´s how it is. But there are a few people who you should definitely befriend. I know that I´m in no position to give you advices in your personal life and I really shouldn´t tell you this, but trust me Bradley Bradshaw, his call sign is Rooster, Natasha Trace, call sign Phoenix and Robert Floyd, call sign Bob, are the way to go." the voice from his computer finished as you looked at him in disbelief.
You chuckled a bit and didn´t really know what to say. "I know that this is a lot, and I may have overstepped here a bit, but I just wanted to give you a little heads up. And also, me and Sarah both, we´ve been talking, and we know how family is important, and that it doesn´t matter if it´s by blood or not. If you ever needed someone, someone to talk to, someone to hug or even just a shoulder to cry on. We are here for you. You now know where we live, and I want you to use this knowledge every time you need, okay?" he reassured you and smiled. You were now having tears in your eyes, but weren´t letting them fall. "I don´t know what to do...I... thank you so much. I would hug you right now, but we know each other for just a half an hour so..." you trailed off, just as he stood up and hugged you.
You were caught off guard and that made some of the tears fall. You were silently crying into his shoulder as he was patting your back. "I´m sorry, I just, no one told me this for such a long time and it...I´m just so sorry." you said after you finished the hug. He just knowingly smiled and wanted to type something into his computer when Sarah´s voice stopped him.
"The lunch is ready!" she shouted from the kitchen, so you and Iceman just looked at each other and made your way out.
After an amazing lunch, that you surely needed, it was already about 4:30 PM as you were preparing to leave the Kazansky household. "Wait a minute, sweetie." came Sarah when you were on your way to the front door. "Tom would like to tell something real quick." she added. You nodded at her and went back to the living room.
"I´m sorry to keep you here, but I just wanted to finish what we started before lunch. There is this bar, it´s called The Hard Deck, and a lot of people from the base will be there tonight, well every night, but tonight especially, there will be some of your colleagues from the special deployment. I think that you should go there. At least to look over the people. And if there won´t be anyone friendly, you would, at least, meet Penny. Penny Benjamin is the owner of the bar, and she is really kind. It certainly wouldn´t hurt to have her in your corner." he finished and looked expectantly at you. You just sighed and that made him frown. "Come on, please promise me that you will go there." he continued. After a minute of hesitation, his voice came again.
"You know, I´m higher in the ranks than you, I could just order you to go there." he said and laughed. "Okay, okay...I promise I will go there and try to make friends." you told him with a chuckle. "Wonderful, well I won´t hold you anymore. Have a great time tonight, and if you need something, just call me or Sarah or just come here. The doors are always opened." he finished, and you quickly hugged him again. You fared welled him as well and made your way back to the front door where Sarah was patiently waiting for you.
"Honey, I know what Tom has been talking to you about, and I just wanted to make sure, that you know that it´s true. We will always be there for you, okay? If you need anything, and it could be as small as just to talk or hug, we are here." she said and pulled you into a hug. "I know Sarah, and I really, really appreciate it. Thank you so much. It´s nice to know that I have someone in my corner." you smiled at her when you stopped hugging. "I have to go now though, I promised Tom that I will go to The Hard Deck, so..." you trailed off, which made her laugh. "Of course, go and have fun, you are young only once. And please tell Penny that I say hi, will you?" she said after opening the doors for you. “Of course, Sarah. Thank you so much once again. Have a great evening." you said and made your way out of the door.
You turned around once more and quickly waved at her. Then you pulled out your phone and saw that there was one unread message. You clicked to open it and laughed. It was from Iceman, and it read: "And don´t try anything. I will know if you were there or not." and a blinking emoji.

Okay I am in dire need of some more sweetness. Could I request “Person A stealing person B’s sweater/clothes” with Phoenix??
And big congrats too love! ❤️🎉🎊
Hi Sylvie! Thanks for the congratulations! More sweetness you say? Ask and ye shall receive. Have some more super fluffy Phoenix shenanigans! I know, I know, this isn't quite Person A stealing person B’s sweater/clothes as much as it is clothing freely given, but I thought it was too cute for words! I hope you like it!

Cardigans and Movie Nights
You’re not sure when it started, but some time after the Uranium Mission, the Dagger Squad started holding movie nights. Once a week, the entire squadron would pack up after flying, get into their cars and drive to Maverick’s hangar in the Mojave Desert. Mav has an outdoor projector and each week, one of the squadron would take a turn to pick the movie. There is always popcorn, pizza and drinks. As the squadron settled into their permanent assignment, they opened the invitation to other people on and around the base at North Island.
You’re a communications officer working out of the air traffic control tower in North Island. It was a complete accident that you’d been assigned to manage Phoenix and Bob’s comms. You got used to hearing Phoenix’s voice through the comms and even began to chat with her. You like talking to her. It makes you smile throughout your day when you get to chat with Phoenix during those few moments before she’s taking off and after she’s landed. You weren’t ever expecting to share anything other than those fleeting chats with her, though. She’d walked up to you when you were in the mess one day, Bob behind her and pulled up a chair. That had been what sparked a beautiful friendship and your invitation to movie nights at Maverick’s.
The first couple of nights, you’d stuck close to Phoenix and Bob, smiling and laughing with them as the three of you curled up on a blanket in the warm grass. It wasn’t long, however, before you were smiling and laughing with all of the other Daggers as well. Sometimes, you still can’t believe that they are your friends. Even though you’re comfortable with all of the Daggers, and can, in fact, rebut Hangman’s flirting, you still prefer Phoenix to them all. As autumn has been creeping up on Southern California, the nights have been getting colder. This particular Friday night, it’s Mickey’s turn to pick the film. You settle into the blanket next to Natasha and wait for Mickey’s pick to come up on the screen. Knowing him, it’s probably some sci-fi flick you barely recognize.
Of course, before the movie can even start, there are already squabbles breaking out in the crowd. You can see Hangman and Rooster chucking popcorn at each other, and Mickey’s in a deep discussion with Hondo and Payback about his movie of choice. The only place which is nearly silent is the blanket where you and Natasha sit. Bob and his girl are chatting and laughing on one of the blankets nearby. It makes you smile, seeing Bob so happy. You’re just reaching for a piece of popcorn from the bucket you’re sharing with Natasha when a gust of wind blows through the gathering. It sends shivers down your spine and goosebumps over your exposed skin. That’s what you get for wearing a sundress in the middle of October, even in California.
“Hey, Rosie? Are you okay?” It’s Natasha who notices the shivers on your frame first.
“I’m fine, Tash!” Your cheery tone is spoiled by the way your teeth chatter lightly.
“Bullshit. Here, Rose. Take my cardigan, at least.” She shrugs her cardigan off, revealing the sensible long sleeved tee she’s wearing under the thick oversized fabric.
“I’m really, alright, Tash! That last gust of wind just caught me by surprise.” You can see her eyebrow raise skeptically, but thankfully before she can start speaking again, Mickey starts the film. Natasha pretends not to notice how you cuddle a bit closer to her as the opening credits for the movie spill forth. It looks like Mickey’s decided on Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Soon, the movie takes up all of your focus.
You love this movie. You’ve seen it a million times and can probably watch it a million more. It’s right in the middle of the scene when Indy and Marianne get trapped in the Egyptian ruins with the snakes that another gust of wind, this one much stronger, sends napkins and empty cartons flying. It also sends another set of shivers coursing through your system. This time, you can’t stop Natasha as she slings the cardigan around your shoulders.
“Wear the sweater, flower.” Her voice is soft as she wraps an arm around you. “Don’t even think about arguing.” You can’t, not when you’re two inches away from her and can feel her breath on your face. You feel flushed and flustered as you put your arms in the sleeves and snuggle in closer to her form.
You don’t remember much of the rest of the night, perhaps because you’d fallen asleep curled up against Nat’s shoulder wrapped up in her thick, fluffy cardigan. You’d heard the story from Hangman, who’d picked you up and carried you to Mav’s guest bedroom, the next morning. Your face had gotten hot and you’d turned away and gone quiet hearing the Dagger’s teasing. There wasn’t anything between Nat and you, right? There couldn’t be! You were quite content to live in that delusional world and ignore everything they say, at least until the seat next to yours is suddenly filled with the woman herself.
“I’m so sorry.” You can’t even look her in the face, you’re that mortified.
“What’re you apologizing for, flower?” Her voice is that mix of chiding strictness and fond amusement that only Natasha can ever pull off.
“I fell asleep on you.” You can’t hide how you’re wringing your hands together in distress.
“Flower, I was okay with it. Frankly, you’re as light as a feather.” Her words have your head snapping up. She cups your cheek, tugging you in. “In fact, I like it when you wear my clothes. Do you want to do that again?”
“Which part? The part of the night where I was wearing your sweater? Or the part where I probably drooled while sleeping on your shoulder?” Your face feels like the surface of the sun.
“How about both?” Your eyes are wide as Tash tugs you even closer. You can’t help how your eyes flutter closed when she kisses you, once, twice, thrice. “Have dinner with me tonight?”
You can hear the rest of the squadron jeering in the background when you peck her lips one more time, flip them the bird in unison with her and giggle out, “Yes, of course. It’s a date.”

It seemed unreal that exactly one year ago the Dagger Squad had gathered for the first time. Standing in The Hard Deck gathered around the pool table, no one could have predicted the friendships they would form or the dangers they would face over the next several weeks. Or that they would all be back in that same spot one year later.
Bradley smiled as he watched more and more people trickle into the bar. He was one of the few guests there who recognized practically every face whether they were those from Mav’s original Top Gun class like Slider, Wolfman, or Hollywood, those from his own Dagger Squad like Bob, Phoenix, or Coyote, or those from command like Cyclone, Warlock, and Hondo. Then of course there were Penny’s friends and family, but he had gotten to know most of them over this past year as well.
Mav and Penny were currently standing near the entrance to the bar as they greeted those arriving. As Mav wrapped his arm around Penny’s waist and kissed her head, he caught Bradley’s eye across the room. His godfather gave him a loving smile before turning back to his guests. It was still crazy to think that one year ago, the two men had just reunited after over a decade of barely speaking to one another. And yet here they were, working alongside each other every day and now Bradley was going to be the best man in Maverick’s wedding tomorrow. He just wished they could have settled their differences before they lost Ice. It would have meant so much to the Admiral to see them this close again.
He was so lost in thought that he almost didn’t notice as Phoenix walked over to where he was standing and leaned on the wall next to him. Raising her beer to her lips, she muttered, “Have you seen him yet?”
Instantly, his pleasant mood soured. Taking a long drag from his drink, he responded curtly, “Nope.”
He hoped that would put an end to the conversation, but he should have known better. “He’s gonna show up.” Phoenix nudged his shoulder. “If not for you, then for the extensive list of VIPs that are here. Do you really think he’d pass up the opportunity to rub elbows with all of these high-ranking officers?”
“Yeah, well, if that’s the only reason he’s showing up, then he can just fuck off,” he muttered under his breath.
“Roo…”
“No!” He pushed himself off the wall and turned to face her. “This is his last chance, Nat. I’m done pretending I’m okay waiting for him to grow up and make up his mind. If he shows up, fine, I’ll hear what he has to say. But if he doesn’t, it’s over.”
“Woah! Someone’s got their panties in a twist!”
Bradley whirled around to see Jake strolling up with that infuriating smug smirk of his and a bouquet of multicolored flowers in his hand. His hair was shorter than the last time Bradley had seen him and he was wearing a tank top that clung to his chest, low-rising board shorts, and a pair of flip-flops. He was seriously underdressed for the evening, but damn, Bradley had to admit he looked good. Not that he was going to tell him that.
Rolling her eyes, Phoenix scoffed. “Really? The invitation said semi-formal, not semi-effort. What are you wearing?”
Jake glared at her. “Oh, bite me, Phoenix. My flight got delayed and I came straight from the airport so I didn’t have time to change. Besides, this is just a rehearsal dinner, not the actual ceremony. And Bradshaw’s in one of those ridiculous Hawaiian shirts. That can’t be up to the dress code.”
Bradley folded his arms across his chest and snapped, “You always have to have an excuse for everything, don’t you, Hangman?”
Jake opened his mouth to speak, but Phoenix cut him off. “Despite the poor choice of wardrobe, we’re glad you could make it. Who are the flowers for?”
His eyes flashed to Bradley, but then Jake refocused on Phoenix. “The bride, but I snuck in the back so I didn’t get a chance to give them to her yet.”
“Then you better hurry. They should be serving food any minute and I doubt Penny will have time to talk to you then.” Bradley grabbed Phoenix’s arm and began to lead her over toward the other side of the bar. “We’ll see you around.”
As they walked away, Bradley could feel the weight of Jake’s eyes on his back but he tried to ignore it and keep walking. When they reached the jukebox, Phoenix shrugged, “Well…. At least he showed up.”
He had. But Bradley still needed to find out why Jake was really here. Was it just for the wedding, or could it be he was here for something– someone –else too…..
Tumblr media
After everyone had finished dinner and given their speeches, Bradley slipped out onto the deck. The cool ocean breeze felt refreshing against his skin and helped soothe the chaos currently swirling around in his head.
He had been so preoccupied with best man duties for the last few hours, he barely had time to glance in Jake’s direction. However, that didn't stop the man from being a constant presence in his mind.  But then again, Jake had barely left his thoughts since the night after the Uranium mission……
Bradley had turned in early, exhausted from the harrowing events of the day. But just as he was on the edge of sleep, the door to his cabin opened and someone walked in. Bradley hadn’t reacted since he assumed it was Hangman heading to bed and he waited for the sounds of the other pilot climbing into the bunk above him. However, they never came.
Concerned, Bradley groggily rolled over and he found Hangman crouched on the floor across from his bed staring at him. But before Bradley could ask him if he was alright, Hangman surged forward and slammed his lips against his. Completely taken by surprise and still half asleep, Bradley fell backward onto the mattress and Jake followed him, climbing onto the bed to straddle him. His kiss only intensified as his hands slid up to tangle in Bradley’s curls. It was only then that Bradley fully grasped what was going on and he made a decision.
He kissed Hangman back.
The thought to do so had crossed his mind more than once these last few weeks, but Bradley had always brushed the idea to the side. After all, the two of them hated each other…. right? However, with his tongue down his throat, Bradley realized what he had felt was far from hate. He had just been too scared to admit it to himself. But now there was nothing holding him back.
He slid his hands under Hangman’s t-shirt, his fingers dancing across the hard lines of his stomach and up to his chest where they swirled through his chest hair. Hangman finally broke off the kiss so Bradley could slip his shirt over his head, and Bradley took the opportunity to ask, “Why now? What changed?”
“You almost fucking died, Roo,” Jake grunted as he wrestled Bradley’s own shirt off of him. Panting slightly, he continued, “I thought I’d lost you. That I didn’t make it there in time. So, I need to feel you. To show myself you’re really still here. That I didn’t miss my chance for this.” And he pressed his lips against Bradley’s once more.
That night had been the first of what started out as a rather solid relationship. Jake seemed different after what happened and, as the weeks passed, Bradley started to let his guard down and truly open himself up to Jake. He should have known better.
“Can I join you?”
As if summoned by his thoughts of the past, Jake hovered in the doorway behind Bradley waiting for permission to come onto the deck. Part of Bradley wanted to tell Jake to fuck off and leave him alone, but another part longed for him to wrap his arms around him and kiss him like he did that first night in his bunk. Back when everything was new and uncomplicated.
Bradley nodded and Jake slipped out to stand beside him.
“I saved one for you.” Jake leaned on the railing next to him and held out a single flower. It was the same shade of yellow as the paint on each of their helmets. “They were… they were actually all for you but I chickened out and said they were for Penny instead.”
“Yeah, well, I never really cared much about flowers,” Bradley muttered, but he took it anyway.
Jake smiled at that. “I’ll keep that in mind.” The two of them stood in silence for a while as they gazed out to the ocean, the only sounds the murmur of the crowd inside and the lapping of the waves on the shore. But finally, Jake spoke up. “I wasn’t sure if you’d even want to see me.”
“I went back and forth about it. At one point, I almost went to Mav to beg him to uninvite you.”
“What changed your mind?”
“I had questions I needed answered and I wanted to see if you’d actually show up or just bail like you usually do.”
Jake flinched but nodded. “Yeah, I guess that’s fair. But I told you last year after the mission, I’ve changed. I’m not that guy anymore.”
Bradley snorted. “Yeah, that’s what you said….. Right before you left me for a new adventure.”
“It’s called a deployment. It’s not like I just left for the fun of it.”
“You had a position here, with me, with our friends. You could have stayed if you wanted to, but you chose to leave.” Bradley looked out into the ocean, hoping Jake couldn’t see the way his lip quivered slightly or how he had to blink away the tears that were forming. “I know we’ve had our differences in the past, but I thought after the mission we moved past that. That month we spent together… I thought it meant something.”
“It did. It meant more than any relationship I’ve ever had. But that’s the problem.” Jake turned away from the railing as he ran his hand through his hair and walked over to the window. Staring at the people inside the bar, he said, “I’ve never been a ‘relationship’ kind of guy. I’m a ‘let’s have fun for a week-or-so’ kind of guy. And being with you…. It was the first time I could see myself thinking beyond that and it scared me. So when I got the opportunity to transfer, I took it and I’m sorry for that.”
Bradley let the silence between them linger for a moment before he whispered, “Did you think about me? About us?”
Jake sighed and Bradley heard his head thump against the window of the Hard Deck. “I tried not to. I thought if I could just put my head down and focus on my next mission, those feelings I had for you would go away. And it worked for a while.”
“And that’s why you stopped answering my calls and texts,” Bradley scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief. “I should have known better than to trust you. But no. You said that we could make things work long distance. That what we had was still new but you wanted to keep exploring it. Then after a month, I barely heard from you and when I did, it was all about your latest mission or training exercises. You might have changed at first but the old Hangman came back and you cared more about your career and ego than anything else.”
The two men stood in silence, their backs to one another. Whatever feelings they had last year were still there, rippling in the air around them. Bradley wanted Jake so much it hurt. But more than that, he needed Jake to want him back just as fiercely. He was no longer willing to settle for anything less. And it seemed as if Jake might have finally understood that.
Taking a deep breath, Jake said, “You’re right. This past year I’ve been trying to chase that high from last summer. To feel that rush and excitement and adrenaline I did when I was here. And it finally hit me last week. I’m not looking for the assignment or the danger that gave me that feeling. I’m looking for the person.” He chuckled dryly, “It’s not the plane. It’s the pilot, right? And I haven’t had the right pilot by my side for a year now. I need my wingman back….. I need you.”
Bradley’s heart skipped a beat, but it still wasn’t enough. Turning so his back was against the railing, he crossed his arms over his chest. “So what? You want me to leave my position at Top Gun and get transferred to your squadron just because all of a sudden you had this great epiphany? Even if I agree to try things with you again– which I haven’t –I’m not leaving all of my friends, family, and a job I love on the off chance you don’t sabotage us again.”
“I’m not asking you to.” Jake turned to face Bradley, but he couldn’t meet his eye. “The real reason I was late tonight is because I was talking to Cyclone. Starting next month, I’m gonna be a Top Gun instructor. Just like you.”
Bradley blinked several times in quick succession. “Wh-what?”
“I’m not asking you to leave everything behind for me. I’m asking you to let me come home to you and try again.” Jake’s eyes lifted slowly until he was staring into Bradley’s eyes. “I messed up but I want to fix it. I want to fix us. And I know it won’t be like it was before, but I’m just asking for a chance. Because I fucking love you, Bradley Bradshaw. And I’m tired of trying to convince myself I don’t.”
Bradley could only stare at Jake with his jaw practically on the floor. He had considered a hundred different ways this conversation would go once he saw Jake again, but Jake confessing he loved him had never once crossed his mind. Even before Jake had left, neither one of them had used the “L” word though Bradley had considered it once or twice. But for Jake to be the first one to say it…..
As Bradley tried to absorb everything Jake had told him, Jake continued to wait, chewing on his lip as his eyes darted across Bradley’s face trying to get some idea of what he was feeling. But when he couldn’t see an answer, his shoulders slumped and he hung his head. Nodding softly, he said, “Yeah, I thought it was a long shot. But I had to try. I’ll see you tomorrow at the wedding, Rooster.”
However, as he turned to leave, Bradley’s hand shot out and grabbed his. Jake’s eyes snapped up to Bradley’s face and the mustachioed man smiled. “I should hate you, you know. I should reject your offer and move on. But I can’t. Because I love you too, Jake.”
Then he wrapped his arms around Jake’s waist and pulled him into a kiss.
It felt almost like that first time on Bradley’s bunk a year ago. The same desperation and heat fueled their motions. Jake’s hand wrapped around the back of Bradley’s neck and he pulled him even deeper into him while Bradley pushed Jake back against the wall of The Hard Deck. Everyone inside was probably staring at them through the window, but neither man gave a fuck at that moment. Right now, nothing existed besides the two of them.
Jake slipped his lips from Bradley’s and began trailing kisses across his jaw and down his throat. When he began sucking on the side of his neck, Bradley moaned, “Oh god, I’ve missed you.”
Lifting his head, Jake said, “Well, I’m not going anywhere this time. I promise.” He began to lean forward again, but he looked at his watch as it made a soft buzz sound. A grin slowly spread across his face. “Midnight. Which means it’s now the anniversary of the mission. Do you remember what we did that night exactly one year ago?”
Bradley’s grin soon matched Jake’s. “I may not have a bunk handy but the backseat of my Bronco is about the same size.”
“Then what are we waiting for?” Jake slid his hand into Bradley’s and began pulling him towards the parking lot. “I want to make this another night you’ll never forget.”

Mav and Ice seem so isolated. I'm looking forward to your Slider one-shot that deals with Ice's friend group, but what about Mav? TGM sorta implies that he does have some work friends on his side like Hondo. Mav seems like the kind of guy that needs at least one close friend (like Goose) to survive. I'd like to think he kept in touch with Viper who seemed to have some vested interest in Mav's success.
Your Ice seems a bit hard to be friends with (at least post Mav relationship where his ambition and secret keeping maybe isolated him) But Ice in TG was "close as brothers" to Cougar and Slider which implies he was some emotional intelligence. though maybe not a lot if he dropped Cougar after he turned in his wings.
yeah they are super isolated that’s their tragedy 😭 the thing about mav is that the place where i would have the opportunity to talk about his external friendships (debriefing) is already soooo unreadably long. it’s a 45k one-shot. like that is unforgivable. if i add anything more to it, i go straight to fandom jail. which is a shame bc there's so much more I could say, especially about stuff like this. but i have had some Thoughts about especially his relationship with hondo & how hondo finds out he & ice are together! see below:

also, i agree with you that my ice is hard to be friends with, but i would also extend that to canon ice—he’s so……bitchy. he’s just a bitter unfriendly guy looking Not To Make Friends but to Intimidate The Competition. clearly he and Cougar WERE competition, if Cougar was good enough to almost get sent to Top Gun. and that scene where Ice says “cougar and i were like brothers in flight school” —like literally everything else about TG86 ice—rings super false and hollow to me. He’s just using Cougar to piss off maverick. Maybe they weren’t even actually ever friends. “He was a good man.” Clearly ice sees leaving the Navy (in my reading, being UNFIT for the navy, his worst nightmare) as a sign of weakness with the use of the word “was,” and is obviously strongly insulting Cougar behind his back, which maverick rightly calls him out for. Mavericks whole character arc in the movie is about him being a loner who doesn’t work well with other people, but I don’t think that means Maverick's narrative foil (ice) is automatically a team player just by virtue of being Maverick’s narrative foil! Ice is a petty, catty, arrogant, backstabbing, unlikeable bitch! and good for him 🥰 but yeah i don’t think he would have many friends even if he were straight and didn’t have anything to hide. also, in my research & personal experience interacting with them, general/flag officers in the military do not tend to be very personally likeable/friendly/outgoing people, especially if you are ALSO in the military & subject to their shitty decisions/machiavellianism.
also, it is my belief that ice was the one who shouted “mother goose you pussy!!!” during The Volleyball Scene. and his “The, uh, plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies’ room” comment, which is literally his first-ever line in the entire franchise……. he gives very frat boy. i do not like ice. even my version. I love him but i do not like him. he’s very hard to like.

Another Year, Another Chance
Fandom: Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Jake “Hangman” Seresin, Hangster
Summary: One year ago, Bradley took a chance on a new relationship but it quickly fell apart. Now, he is about to come face-to-face with Jake for the first time since he left and he has some questions that need to be answered.
Word Count: 2786
TW: Love Confession, Angst, Fluff, Kissing
Note: This was written as part of @tgm-all4one's "It's not the plane. It's the pilot." challenge as a celebration of the one-year anniversary of the release of Top Gun: Maverick. Thank you to @green-socks and @loverhymeswith for looking this over for me! I love you guys! 💕
Tumblr media

The dagger squad (+ Warlock, Cyclone, and Hondo) plays laser tag
Tumblr media
After dog fight football on the beach and the success of the uranium mission, the group decides to continue the tradition of team outings/team building exercises.
Lots of ideas are thrown around on what the next outing should be before someone mentions laser tag.
Being a team of ultra-competitive aviators who love any reason to rough house with each other, this idea proves extremely popular.
The group chat descends into chaos long before they even settle on a date to go, with Bob and Rooster trying to determine a date, time, and location, Phoenix and hangman sending vague threats to one another, and Coyote sending memes from 2017.
A week later, the dagger squad arrives at the arcade ready for battle..
Yet before they can even make it to the door, Cyclone and Warlock appear, With Cyclone chastising them for being late while Warlock happily greets everyone (and silently sizes up his opponents).
they’ve yet to confirm who leaked the plans to the admirals, but a secret zoom meeting held a few nights later reveals that everyone kind of suspects Bob.
From there they begrudgingly make their way inside to receive their wristbands and arcade tokens for after the game.
10 minutes later, they’ve each selected a loadout, committed the rules to memory (excluding the ones they’re choosing to ignore), and are now prepared for battle.
The second the buzzer goes off and the game starts, all civility is lost.
Maverick is hurdling himself over barricades mission impossible style.
Cyclone is barking out orders and directions that are being completely ignored.
Hondo and Phoenix are scheming up war strategies.
Fanboy, Payback, and Rooster create a secret alliance before immediately betraying each other.
Hangman and Coyote are literally swinging from the rafters.
and Bob’s building a (shockingly impressive) makeshift sniper’s nest.
Slowly everything begins to shift to a somewhat-normal game of laser tag.
Fanboy, Coyote, and Payback are having the time of their lives.
Phoenix, Rooster, and Hondo go full seal team six and end up focusing all their power on Hangman, who can’t l go more than 3 seconds without being tagged.
It ends with Hangman quitting before proceeding to cry in the parking lot at 3 pm on a Tuesday.
Maverick is running around like a mad man and firing at everything that moves.
Bob, meanwhile, is a concerningly good sniper with zero loyalty to any alliance.
In fear of there careers, no one will tag Cyclone.
That is until Maverick gets a little too trigger happy and misses his target horribly.
It takes 5 aviators plus an underpaid 15-year-old worker to hold Cyclone back.
Meanwhile, Warlock forwent the game entirely in favor of sitting at the snack bar and drinking a comically large blue raspberry slushie.
Seconds later, the buzzer goes off to signal the end of the game.
Hondo and Bob were definitely the winners but the worker refuses to disclose this information in favor of not having to break up another fight.
Everyone is sweaty, bruised (even if it’s just their ego), and refusing the speak to each other as they make their way out of the arena.
Warlock ends up buying everyone a slushie and a snack in hopes of repairing the now broken friendships.
(He makes Cyclone pay for all of it)
A truce is drafted up and signed on an arcade napkin and things quickly return to their usual chaotic normal.
From there, they make their way into the arcade where things go much more smoothly.
Even if it’s only because Warlock declared Air hockey off limits in favor of maintaining friendly relations.

Okay I don’t know if I’m the only one who needs this but
I need a fic where the characters of top gun watch the top gun movies
It might be a little cheesy but y’all
- The daggers reacting to “twink Mav”
- Seeing Goose and Mav’s friendship
-The inverted scene
-The sexual tension that was Maverick and Iceman
- Then in Top Gun Maverick Phoenix yelling when Hangman and Rooster come on scene for the first time
-“Their ex’s your honor”
-Coyote agreeing with her bc they know
-Everyone seeing the “adventure” Mav and Rooster went one
-The push up scene
- Seeing how Hondo made sure no one bullied his nephew
-The beach scene
-Everyone yelling about Roosters jorts
-The hard deck scene where everyone is introduced
Just the OG Naval Aviators and the Daggers reacting to there greatest hits
*Let me know what scenes you would like the characters to react to*

Whumptober 2022.
Not that i'm ever going to write all of this but eh, one never knows, maybe someone wants some prompts or inspiration will finally struck me once and for all lol
This wasn't supposed to happen: Yale/Harvard, pre-Mission, mechanical faliur, adrife in the sea;
Confrontation: Rooster comes around to talk with Slider about all the photos he found on his mom's bedside table. He just wants to know, things escaldes a litte (past slooserole);
Gun to temple: Mav and Merlin are just coming home after deployment. They end up in the middle of a robbery (Icemav and Merlin/his wife);
Can't pass out: long day at paper work, first diagnosis of cancer, Ice doesn't know his limits, Ron tries to help (Ron is the bestest of best friends);
Blood loss: Mav gets shot during the mission. They realised it when it was almost too late (Maverick);
I've got pulse: Jester has a heart attack (Jester and Viper);
Shaking hands: after the mission, Bob's hands start shaking without a reason (PTSD; Bob & Pheonix);
Beak from the dead: Goose wakes up three and a half hours after they have declared him dead (Goose centric; carolegoose);
Tossin' and turning: sometimes Fritz can't sleep, and Harvard knows how cuddling helps him to calm down (platonic Fritz/Harvard/Yale);
Waterboarding: they can't eject and the jet starts to fill with water (Hollywolf, during the Layton sequence);
Self-done first aid: Omaha bangs his head, by accident, against something and tries to patch it all by himself. Halo discovers him trying to stitch himself (Omaha & Halo);
Mayday! Mayday! : the story of why Phoenix and Halo no longer fly together (Halix);
Fracture: Carole breaks her arm, Goose and Slider take care of her (Slooserole);
I'll be right there with you: they were supposed to be on a simple reconnaissance mission, but they were shot down and are now fleeing for their lives (Hollywolf);
New scars: he stopped counting them when he was ten, but the new ones make him want to check it all over again (Ice centric: 5+1);
No one's coming: they get lost during a training exercise and it takes the others 72 hours to find them. For the longest time, they both believed this was how it would end (Sunchip);
Stress position: being hanged by his hands wasn't in Cyclone's plan for the morning (Cyclone centric);
Take my coat: He's sitting down in the car they sent to pick him up when the realisation of what happened hits him, and he's so fucking cold. Hondo offers him his coat (post-Darkstar crushing, platonic mavhondo);
Head lolling: everything quickly turns from a dream to a nightmare (Warlock/Cyclone, flying together, '90s setting);
Fetal position: Jake doesn't want to go back, but his dad's funeral forces him to do so. Back to Fallon Javy holds him until he's back in himself (catatonic state + dealing with emotions. marcheresin, can be read as romantic or platonic);
Allergic reaction: seafood is great, until Bob doesn't stop breathing (Bob & Phoenix);
Caughing out blood: he can wash that shirt all over again and again, but he won't ever be clean again from Ice's blood. Bradley doesn't know what to do (Icemav + Bradley; pre-first diagnosis);
Forced to kneel: medioeval au! King Caine forces Maverick to kneel in front of everyone as part of his punishment (Mav is the head of the rebellion);
Blood covered hands: Bradley is barely breathing between his arms and his hands are covered in his blood. Jake prays all the way to the hospital that won't be the last time he will hold Bradley (hangstar; can be read as platonic or romantic);
Lost voice: Life takes his voice away too. (Ice centric);
Separeted: there's a storm in the middle of the ocean, and it's fast and brutal. Trying to go up and up makes them lose where the other is. (panick attack; flying together; halix, bob & omaha friendship);
Stumbling: alcohol helps, but Ron can't stop asking himself why he's still there. Tom doesn't have answers but he tries anyway (Slider & Ice, post Carole's funeral);
Anger born of worry: Amelia isn't answering her phone. Her moms are worried and then angry when she comes back smiling and laughing like nothing happend (pennycharlie+amelia);
Better me than you: Mav dies instead of Goose, but it takes time and Mav has time to say sorry (hop 31 if it went down differently);
Please don't touch me: Bill likes to have it all, Tom learns he's the other one (Cougar/Ice; cheating; pre-top gun);
You can rest now: in Ice's den, after the mission, everyone's alive and breathing, but letting go isn't really an option (daggers + icemav).

Some Top Gun:Maverick Headcanon
Most of these I have thought of for some time so forgive me if these are *outlandish*
Hondo, Warlock, Coyote and Payback are all in D9 Fraternities. Hondo is an old school Que while Warlock is an Alpha. They both began talking one day and spoke about their affiliations and the likes. When the youngins come in, those two see the paraphernalia they have and take them under their wings. Coyote is a Que. NO ONE CAN CHANGE THAT. Payback is a Kappa (he has the shoulders). If anything he may be an Iota (I’m being biased on this one lol). To extend off of this, Hondo is married to an AKA while Warlock is married to a Delta/ SGRho. They take the boys in whenever and give whatever advice/ comfort they need since they are black pilots in Top Gun. And you know they’ve strolled on base. And as someone who’s mom is an AKA and has been raised around D9s all my life, this has been a true thing on my mind.
Ever think that Coyote would have been a solid wingman to Mav compared to Rooster? Like, yes he’s best friends with Hangman but he’s more level headed and focused IMO. For plot? Yes Rooster but he’s hardheaded. For angst? Yes Hangman but he’s get too caught up his own ass. But really, Coyote could have been better. Especially the way he works with Phoenix and Bob? It’s totally there.
I have the biggest problem of most of these pilots playing football in denim. They better get them 5” inseam shorts and deal with them. Hell, Bob too. Show off them thighs men. Y’all in SoCal. Rooster pissed me off in them cutoff jorts. At least Coyote has full coverage with the jeans.
Deadass, they needed a black female pilot there. Halo, Phoenix and homegirls who has her part clean? Knowing good and well she’ll sneak a scarf under her helmet just because? Do I have any knowledge about the Navy outside of what I know? Hell no. But most definitely she’ll be fucking great. (This was just for me cause us black women are great. Duh.)
Hondo and Warlock stepped up to be the big brothers Maverick needed. Similar to how they treat Javy and Reuben, they treat him as their own. Lowkey, he knows about all the tea going down in the D9 orgs and has been to a plethora of homecomings, step shows and Greek picnics. He definitely has shirts from said events too. Coyote and Payback have a unique relationship with Mav as Hondo and Warlock wrangled them up.
When they got on radar the F-14 and Hondo’s head raised up, he really said in his head “I know this nigga lyin”. Warlock had the same thought but said it professionally.
When Roos and Mav had to land and Hondo was down there on the tarmac, he knew he had to bring his boy home. He had a pep talk to his crew before had and probs cussed them out if they made one mistake. Warlock and Cyclone had said some words too to co-sign what Hondo said.
Phoenix, Bob and Coyote have a unique friendship now after their target practice. All three had an experience that was hella scary and you bet he went to see them in the infirmary that night. He probably fell asleep there too. Hangman asked where he was and probs had to think about it. But they’re the best of friends that no one expected to happen. These three have a group chat and it’s the cutest thing ever. I expect trips to amusement parks and things like that. If the whole Dagger squad traveled together (which I do expect) they’d go on their merry way and find cool things to do.
Amelia and Rooster had to have a conversation especially since they’re siblings now (it makes sense). Roos finds out how wicked smart she is and can clap back quick as fuck (you’re still a captain? She murked Mav with that one). And Amelia….she knows that he’s book smart and not street smart. Big head empty thoughts type of moment(s). But those two together are the best pair. She’ll have to teach him some comebacks to help him out
- [ ] I want a convo between Halo and Phoenix. They’re the only women on the mission and you know they have shit to talk about. You know they have a rank list of all the men based on pure interaction (nothing sexual). Here’s how it goes. 1. Bob 2. Fanboy and Packback (they stay a pair) 3. Coyote (if he didn’t hang out with Hangman that much he may be ranked 1.5) 4. Hangman and Fritz (Fritz is at 4 because I LOVE Manny Jacinto and we didn’t get more of him) 5.Omaha, Yale
Not only did Pete get talks to by Carol, Iceman too. I feel Iceman would have said no to pulling his papers and would have let him fly but respected Carol’s wishes. Mav had to convince him to have his papers pulled and there’s something we may never know that was spoken in between the lines.
ALSO, Fanboy, if he was in in a D9, he’d be a Kappa…let me dream ok?
Let me know your thoughts. These are things that I thought of at the spur of the moment. I’m curious about everyone else.

Wingmen (Part 1)
Jake “Hangman” Seresin was chatting with Fritz and Omaha in the ready room while Coyote, Phoenix and Bob were up in training with Maverick.  The radio was on, but at that moment only Rooster was listening to it, following what was going on with the others. Fritz had just said something funny, and Hangman laughed when he heard Maverick’s voice: “Coyote, do you copy?”
All of a sudden he forgot what had been so hilarious ten seconds ago and the smile faded from his face. He even took the toothpick out of his mouth. Worry spread out in his chest and he jumped to the radio, listening anxiously, but there was no answer. Say something, he thought with his hands clenched into fists. He could only hear Maverick stating that Coyote must have gotten the G-loc then he tried to wake him up. By that time all the others were around the radio, wanting to know what would happen. Hangman forced himself to keep his eyes open, glued to the device, because the moment he closed them, he could only see Coyote’s jet crashing into the rocks, but that just couldn’t happen. Not to him. Not to Coyote.
The relief made his whole body shake when he heard him gasp as he regained his consciousness and managed to pull up the jet before it could have reached the rocks. When Maverick instructed him to land, Hangman left the room, wanting to be there in case Coyote needed any help. Plus, he didn’t want the others to see his eyes tearing up due to the relief he felt that his friend was still alive. He was on his way outside when he heard the explosion. He stopped for a moment, trying not to think of the absolute worst and quickened his steps. Relief waved through his body when he saw his roommate’s jet landing safe and sound.
He was there when Coyote climbed out of the cockpit to help him if needed. And he did, as stepping on the ground he almost fell over due to his knees still shaking. Noticing who caught him, the aviator let out a relieved sigh and let Hangman pull him into a hug. He didn’t care that Hondo and the technicians could see it; he almost lost his best friend today. He could feel Coyote’s body still trembling that made him pull his arms tighter around the other pilot.
They were standing like this for a while, until he finally stopped shaking. Pulling away, he looked exhausted, but his lips curled up into a smile.
“You scared the shit out of me, man,” Hangman admitted. “I’ve thought I’m gonna lose you.”
“I’ve thought that, too,” Coyote nodded, but then his smile grew wider. “But it would take more to get rid of me,” he added.
A relieved laughter escaped from Hangman’s mouth as he heard him making a joke.
“Let’s take you to the medical room,” he said, and keeping an arm around his roommate, so Coyote could lean on him, they headed back inside. They only took a few steps when the other aviator turned to Hangman.
“Do you know anything about Phoenix and Bob?” he wondered.
“Why? What about them?”

I Heard from the Heavens
A Hondo and Maverick friendship fic written for @topgunincolor
Rating: T
The first words Hondo ever spoke to Maverick were innocuous, practically unmemorable. Something like, “Scooter took the spare, sir. He’s already up. Better luck tomorrow.” The last, equally so. “Uh, Admiral Cain is asking- ordering that we bring her down.” But wait, no. Those weren’t his last words to Mav, because after that-
